Play Movies on external sync

Hi there,
I need to sync a movie on an external signal. Therefor I have to play a movie frame by frame. The performance by using the "stepForward - drawCurrentFrame" methods is very low.
Is there a better way without writing a complete quicktime-clock ?

See:
iTunes: May be unable to transfer videos to iPhone, iPad, or iPod

The 2G can only play/sync SD versions

  • Not allowed to play movie, an external display is detected (Q1544)

I'm getting this message on my I-pad 2 while using my Uverse app
"Not allowed to play movie, an external display is detected (Q1544).
There is no problem using the Netflix app.

There isn't a workaround, if you get that message then the provider has blocked using Airplay or an external monitor. Contact Uverse and ask them to remove the block.

  • [Solved] Playing movie on external monitor gives me a blue screen

Nevermind.  I found the xvattr package in the AUR.
I've tried this on both VLC and Mplayer and everytime the movie starts I see blue instead.  On the built in monitor for my laptop the DVD is viewable.  To get tv-out I use this command:
    xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1024x768
I thought that this might have to do with the standard that is set so I tried to change it with the advice on the wiki (for ATi drivers):
xrandr --output VGA-0 --set tv_standard ntsc
    But it gives me this:
X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist)
Major opcode of failed request: 150 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request: 11 (RRQueryOutputProperty)
Serial number of failed request: 27
Current serial number in output stream: 27
How do I get DVD's to play on an external monitor?

So I have the exact same issue (never a problem with my G4 12" Powerbook).
I found this in an Apple support document:
"When you are finished using your MacBook Pro, MacBook, or PowerBook G4 in closed-lid mode, the internal display will not come on when you open the lid until you have disconnected the external display. If you want the internal display to enable again, remove the external display connector, put the computer to sleep, and then open the lid. This will toggle the computer to come out of closed-lid mode and once again provide power and a video signal to the internal display."
I'm not sure how you put the MBP to sleep in closed lid mode if you have already removed the external display....
I am going to try putting the MPB to sleep, THEN removing the external display, then re-waking..... We'll see
    The article is at:

    Good luck!

  • Playing movies on external DVD drive no longer works

I am no longer able to watch movies from an external dvd drive with my 2011 MacBook Pro. I'm using VLC.
The external dvd drive worked correctly until recently. Still works on another (Windows-based) machine. The DVD spins up, idles, but does not play. I've un-installed and re-installed VLC. No error messages given.
I'm fairly new to Macs. Is there something I can reset to get this working? I don't understand why this would just stop working on this one machine.

With the External HD still disconnected Restart the iMac and then re-connect the External HD.
Optionally if you have already reconnected the External HD, open Disk Utility and see if you can select and re-mount it using the blue Mount button.

  • My computer is authorized but won't let me play movies from external drive

Before the most recent update, I was backing up my movies and music to an external drive to save room on my hard drive. I would then play those movies in QT from the external drive. I didn't import into iTunes bc I wanted to save room. Now, however, it won't let me play those movies unless I import into iTunes. I get a please authorize field. I authorize and it says that this computer is already authorized but it still won't play the movie.

SO FAR I THINK IT IS "GENIUS" (IT'S A DUNCE!!!!)
TURN OFF GENIUS THE REBOOT iTUNES...
SO FAR THIS HAS WORKED FOR ME!

  • My 30 gig stopped playing movies after last sync.

After the last sync, the whole movie content was gone. itunes said that the files ( that always worked ) could not be played on this ipod...???
All movies are still in itunes and computer is fine...Did the last update wipe out the older video code? I have used this as a tv out ipod for years, so I know what to do.....

At the very least sounds like there is some corruption in the media library on the device. Try booting the device into recovery mode and running clean up.http://forums.creative.com/creativel....id=5530#M5530Whether that fixes the problem or not will depend on whether is just a database error on the device or some larger issue with the device hardware itself, like a hard dri've failing.

  • Playing movie on external monitor

i have quicktime 7 pro for mac on my macbook, and i connected my macbook to my tv using a mini dvi to vga adapter. my problem is that i want to watch a movie (from my macbook) on my flat panel tv and i can't get audio to come out.. i got the picture and such but i just can't seem to figure out the whole audio side of this.. please help!!!

Just so you know VGA adapters do not have audio on them. Anything using VGA would have to have external sound hooked up separate. All the computers I have owned have always had one port for video and on port for audio.

  • HT204382 what software do i need to play movies on avi file . have connected a external memory disk and all the movies are in avi format.

What software do i need to install in order to be able
to play movies in .avi format.
have connected an external memory and all the entertainment
    files are in .avi format.
Ansver i get : does not support

VLC is a good choice. While I don't know if it will play your files, Perian is a helper app for Quicktime which allows you to play a lot of things in the Quicktime Player.
There is also Flip4Mac which allows you to play windows media files in Quicktime.
Finally, note that the extension on a video file doesn't really tell you what you need to play it. The .avi, .mpg, etc. is only the wrapper around the actual video. The video is encoded by some means and needs to be decoded. The video inside the .avi can be encoded in one of many different schemes.
VLC, Perian, Flip4Mac, and many others, are all able to decode various flavors of encoding. Having all of those in your toolbox will help to allow you to play most of the things you'll find.

Is it possible to use an external drive to play movies on my iPhone 5?  I am going on a long flight and only have a 16gb iPhone 5.  I will not have access to wifi, so it would have to connect manually.  I've heard of apps that connect to an external for this very purpose, but its via wifi.

Use Google and you can find similar drives from other companies.

  • What application will allow me to play movies with an external disc drive?

What application will allow me to play movies with an external disc drive? I recently purchased an external disc drive and when testing it discovered that it only played the audio of the DVD, not the video.  Very frustrated.

Are you referrring to a commercial DVD movie, or a disk with digital movies, such as mpeg files?

  • External optical drive won't play movie DVD

The SuperDrive on my very late 2009 MacBook (OS 10.5.8, Leopard) died, and I got a well-rated CD/DVD player/writer, Samsung SE-218BB) instead. It is meant to be compatible with my Mac. It works with things like Disk Warrior, but recently, I tried to play a video disk and got the message "Utilization error. A valid DVD player could not be found (-70012)." I've read a lot of other messages about this same error and have done what was recommended (throwing out the appropriate plist file from DVD player, for example). The messages were for other Mac models and/or versions of OS X, so maybe there is some advice that is specific to my Mac that would pertain? By the way, the DVD does show up in the Finder in a generic kind of way (that is, I think it is the kind/manufacturer of the disk, but it certainly isn't the name of what is on it), and when I click on that, it opens a bunch of separate files that don't seem to have much to do with watching the movie.
I also tried one of the tips given in the DVD Player manual (dragging the file to the DVD Player icon. All that did was make the DVD disappear. I had to restart,, with the mouse "button" (really not a button) on the Mac pressed, which released the DVD from the external drive.
I don't think the problem's with the hardware, since I can play Disk Warrior in it (that opens automatically after I insert the DVD. So what's with the movies? I've checked Software Update, and my software (DVD Player 7.7) is up to date for my Mac and OS version. I don't even know whether I should be using DVD Player for movies. (I haven't tried a music DVD, but I suspect that should open in some other app.) I don't remember playing movies on my computer when the internal SuperDrive was still working, so I can't make that comparison.
I hope you can help me. I'd be very sorry if I had to give up on playing the DVDs I now have. My VHS/DVD player-recorder used to be just fine, but my cable company set it back up wrong when they installed a new cable box, and now they want $50 even to look at it, so for now (until I find some company, say, the manufacturer of the player, that can tell me how to set it back up) the only way I can play and burn movies is with my computer.
    Thanks,
    jenny

I have discovered, no thanks to Samsung techs, what the problem is, and it might be revealing for others, as well. It seems that DVD Player, which is the app Apple provides in OS x for (naturally) playing videos, doesn't work with external drives if the computer has an internal drive – even when, as in my case, the internal drive is dead.
I have learned, however, of the existence of a couple of alternative, free applications that run video and audio disks with external optical drives, and one of them, at least (VLC), seems to be widely acclaimed. Does anyone know whether bypassing DVD Player could be a bad idea? There were some gripes from one or two reviewers about awkwardness with playing audio DVDs with iTunes, but I'm not sure what they meant when they said that you have to click on individual items in a selection. Would that mean, for example, having to click on each movement of a Mozart trio? That I couldn't play an entire album's contents of another kind of music without clicking on each song?
Getting the internal optical drive replaced would be prohibitive, even if the parts could be obtained, so I guess I'm stuck trying to deal with the external drive I have and finding the best replacement for DVD Player that I can find. The interesting thing is that the drive works beautifully with a MacBook Air I tried it with, so I guess that is because the Air doesn't have an internal drive?
Wouldn't you think that Samsung techs would know all this? The one I spoke to told me to make sure that my system preference for CDs and DVDs was set to open automatically with DVD Player and sent me all kinds of FAQs, plus a way to get an RMA number for a return. Not a word about difficulties with Macs having an existing internal drive. And all after spending a very long time talking with me about what was going on, what the error message was, and so on. I guess the message hasn't gotten to them.
I hope this information will be helpful to someone.

  • Using internal Hitachi multi-drive as an external, does it still play movies?

Considering using the bay for super drive as a 2nd hard drive space.  Was wondering if anyone used their optical as an external, and if they did, does it still play movies or dvds?

I bought on of these HD adapters http://tinyurl.com/7455nek to get the files off of a G3 Wallstreet laptop HD. I loaned it to my grandson so he could use it to get files off of a PC HD.
