Play/pause key plays a sound

greetings
while listening to iTunes, whenever I press the play/pause (F8) key it plays a sound. I it just started doing this and i'm not sure why. how can I turn this off?
Additionally, The sound DOES NOT play when I press the play/pause button with my mouse in iTunes, it only happens when using the keyboard.
Thanks
BC

nevermind. there was a rogue sound file on my desktop that was played whenever i hit that key

Try restoring from backup. Next would be a restore to factory defaults/new iPod.

The "restore disk" is built into the Mac. See About Recovery.
Need more specifics about what error messages you got while installing Adobe Flash.
However, you can almost avoid Flash altogether by setting YouTube to play the HTML5 version instead.
Click the Try something new! link at the bottom of the YouTube page.
I don't know about the sound issue. Might be hardware as you think. Try other headphones to check.

• New Problem - video loads, plays a bit, pauses, then plays without sound.

On the first time that I used the TV-Out feature of the iPod, videos that normally were playing properly started to lag. The video would play about 15 seconds, then stop playing for a few seconds, then start again, but without sound. I just thought it might be because of the TV-Out feature, but after that incident, a large amount of my videos have been doing this, without using the TV-Out.
My first use of the tv-out feature was around the time that I first updated the iPod firmware. I now realise that I have no need of the updated firmware, so would be willing to restore the iPod to factory settings, but would rather get some opinions first.
Although these videos had played normally before, now they (and most all videos I have added since), do this when playing:
Load up normally, play normally for about 15 seconds, pause and do nothing, then continue playing but without sound. If I use the clickwheel to skip ahead after it pauses, it will play normally for another 5 seconds or so and then pause and cut the sound again.
I had not experienced anything like this before that first time I used the TV-out capability. Nor had I experienced it before updating the iPod. Now, many, but not all of my videos are doing this.
Oh, it seems only the videos longer than 10 minutes are doing this... all the others work... some more testing would be needed to be certain. Video podcasts are playing fine. So... anyone else had this happen?

This problem seems to occur for the 60GB models that are using the new firmware 1.1. It has been posted all over google and the only fix to this problem is to downgrade to 1.0. The problem is reported as not to affect the 30GB models but there are a few videos on my ipod (30GB) that suffer from this as well. I haven't downgraded by 30GB one to check if it fixes it, but I can assure you that it will fix the problem for the 60GB one (I used to have that one before).

• Game pauses upon playing a sound

I have a class in my flash project called "Resource" which I have designated to contain all the external files outside the flash documnent. When I play a sonud from this class, it seems that my program pauses until the sound is fully loaded, and then every time it plays after that it doesn't lag at all. Would there be a way to load the sound at a different time, i.e. at the beginning of the program, rather than on the fly? Here is the code for Resource.as and how I play the sound.
Class "Resource" (I cut out unimportant stuff)
package  {
        public final class Resource
            [Embed (source="/Resources/Sound.mp3" )]
            public static const Sound:Class;
            public function Resource()
And this is how I call the sound and play it:
private var soundCoin:Sound = new Sound();
public function User() {
soundCoin = new Resource.Sound;
And, obviously, I play the sound using soundCoin.play();
I might just not have the right setup, because I sort of improvised what I was doing. If this method is inefficient, I would love for people to give suggestions.
Thanks

How are you using this or even getting this to happen? My experience is that any Symbol that references a Sound where you don't check "Embed on Frame N" (where n is the default embedding frame in your Publish settings) will give the error "Not a valid sound."  Sorry, I don't have the specific error number, as I have that box checked whenever I need an embedded sound .
The only way I can think that this could possibly happen is if your Symbol that references the Class is before the frame specified in your publish settings (or is the Main document Class). But my experience is that Classes that load before the N frame will embed everything they need on that frame regardless of settings.
Can you provide more details on what you did? Honestly, I'd love to be able to do on purpose what you did by accident. Having sounds that don't play immediately would be a small price to pay to have more flexibility about where the definition is embedded for the project I'm working on.
In case it wasn't clear from the above, I thought I'd restate: what you are seeing shouldn't be happening. The file should be compiled on whatever frame is the default compile frame in your swf, and should play immediately when you call play. That it doesn't says that somehow you've stumbled into an edge case.
FWIW, I find that using the Embed metadata as you have with Flash Pro is extremely unreliable--often part of the sound will not get compiled into the swf, so the sound will cut off early. You will probably find yourself switching to making a swc from embedded library sounds in the end because of this problem (which is what I'm doing).
Update:
I just recreated the error you should be seeing with that box unchecked:
ArgumentError: Error #2068: Invalid sound.
at flash.media::Sound/play()
You can do a web search for more information on this issue.

• Play/Pause Key Troubles

The play/pause key on my macbook has quit working in the last few days. I use this key a lot and it's inability to function has proven to be frustrating. Though the key won't play or pause iTunes, it is not entirely unresponsive. When the backlight goes out just before the screen goes black, pressing the play/pause button still causes the backlight to come back on. All the other keys are working fine, including the skip forward/backward buttons immediately adjacent to the play/pause key. Any help would be much appreciated

Weird, just realized that it only happens when using QuickSilver to select a song. Still, it didn't used to do this.

• Disable Play/ Pause Keys on Apple Keyboards in Aperture

Hi, I'm looking for a way to make Aperture not start a slideshow using the play/ pause key on the Apple keyboards.
It's really annoying when you want to play/pause song in iTunes - Aperture stars slideshow.
Is there some solution to disable Aperture media keys?

Tricky One oO
The only way I can use the play/pause key is when using Ecoute to listen to the iTunes library. And only by pressing altshiftF8...
In Ecoute you can define your own shortcuts which don't interfere with iTunes.
Try:
ctrlcmdspace -> play/pause
ctrlcmdleft -> previous track
ctrlcmdright -> next track

• [Solved] Control MPD with Macbook Pro Play/Pause keys

I have mpd installed and working with ncmpcpp as the client.
I have a 17" C2D 9600GT Mac book Po.
I have pommed installed and working.
I'm using openbox, but I sometimes use awesome when I feel like it.
I think that's all you really need to know. This is probably really simple, but I'm not sure how to do it.
I would like the play/pause key to play/pause, skip forward key to skip forward and the skip back to skip back.
This is a little unrelated, but if any of you have a macbook pro you would know about the alternate to the F3 key. In mac It takes all of your active windows and tiles them across the screen so you can select what window. In awesome, to change the tiling mode you press Command(super)+space. Can I make that alternate F3 key mapped to this?
Thanks guys.

Got it all set. Thanks dude. That link helped quite a bit.
Just in case anyone was wondering, I ended up figuring out what the keys were mapped to and assigned them to control mpc via the rc.xml for openbox.
So basically, copy and paste this into your rc.xml as long as your keys are mapped to XF86 correctly.
<keybind key="XF86AudioPrev">
<action name="Execute">
<execute>mpc prev</execute>
</action>
</keybind>
<keybind key="XF86AudioPlay">
<action name="Execute">
<execute>mpc toggle</execute>
</action>
</keybind>
<keybind key="XF86AudioNext">
<action name="Execute">
<execute>mpc next</execute>
</action>

• How to pause, stop, play a sound that is loaded from the other .swf file?

Pause and Resume external SWF sound files
I have this code that plays the sound through linkage. It reside in scene1.fla -> scene1.swf.
var mc:MovieClip = this.createEmptyMovieClip("mc",1);
var myLoop:Sound = new Sound(mc);
myLoop.attachSound("bg_sound");
myLoopVolume=0;
myLoop.setVolume(myLoopVolume);
mc.onEnterFrame = function () {
        if (fadeIn01==1) {
            _root.myLoop.setVolume(myLoopVolume);
            myLoopVolume=myLoopVolume+5;
            if (myLoopVolume>50) {
                fadeIn01=0;
        if (fadeOut01==1) {
            myLoop.setVolume(myLoopVolume);
            myLoopVolume=myLoopVolume-1;
            if (myLoopVolume<5) {
                _root.myLoop.setVolume(10);
               // _root.myLoop.stop("myLoop01");
                fadeOut01=0;
fadeIn01=1;
myLoop.start(0,999);
The problem goes like this. I want to pause the sound from playing in scene1.fla -> scene1.swf in anytime I want, through my main.fla -> main.swf that loads the scene1 movie. I got stuck.

you need to use the path from the timeline that contains the controlling code and myLoop.  you can always use trace(this) on both timelines (the one containing the controlling code and the one containing myLoop) to determine the correct path.

• Play/Pause key on Mac keyboard now Play/STOPs iTunes?

The Play/Pause key on my Mac keyboard used to Play/Pause the music. Ever since upgrading to iTunes 9.1, however, the key acts as Play/Stop, so if music is playing and I hit the key, it will STOP the music, and when I hit Play again, it won't continue from where it stopped but it will instead choose a different song in the same playlist to play. How can I fix this to revert to the previous functionality?

Weird, just realized that it only happens when using QuickSilver to select a song. Still, it didn't used to do this.

Someone knows how can i fix??

What is your operating system?  If Windows, see http://forums.adobe.com/thread/945765

• How do you play multiple sounds simultaneously and synchronized?

lets say I have two wave files that are similar in play length but not quite the same. I calculate a new frame rate for reach to make their lengths almost perfectly the same. Now I want to play them and have them repeat for a while.. If I don't synchronize them in some fashion, inevitably the slight difference in play time will cause them to unsync.
what's the best way to keep them in sync? I've been trying playing each sound in it's own thread for the past few days and using thread synchronization, but that isn't working so well.
thanks for the help.

I found the answer I'm looking for! version 1.5 came out with the CyclicBarrier class that causea a thread to pause when it calls the barriers await() function until a predetermined number of threads call await().
So I can create a barrier of size (ThreadCount) and tell all threads to pause at the beginning of a measure until all threads have checked in. That way all threads are out the gate at the same time every measure.

• Airplay plays – without sound

I am not sure if it is a iTunes, AppleTv, Airplay or Time Capsule issue – or a combination of them all.
But i am experiencing alittle annoying issue, which i hope to fix.
I am playing music from iTunes 11.0.5 and i Airplay it to my AppleTv it plays with sounds and all as it sould. But often we it continues to the next track, I can see it plays because the playcounter is running and it Scrobbles to Last.fm – but there is no sound. I then have to pause and press play, or skip back to beginning of the track. Otherwise it can continue to play the rest of the album, just without sound.
I think it might have something to do with all the media files are stored on my Time Capsule, but the iTunes folder containing the .itdb and .itl are still on my local HD. It is as if it doesn't load the files properly. But i don't have any issues with movies files.
Is it a iTunes Time Capsule issue? And if so, any fixes? I tried updating to latest firmware, but it didn't resolve the issue.
Or could the problem be soemthing else?
I do have a pretty fast internet connection both in upload and download.
MacBook Pro 10.8.4
iTunes 11.0.5
AppleTv 2.gen (lastest OS)
Time Capsule 4. gen. (7.6.4)

• Javascript doesn't play() embedded sound

This is a question about the PDF specification regarding how to use the javascript API
to play a sound object.
Specifically, why in my basic example is the javascript able to see the sound,
but can't play() it?
I have a test PDF illustrating my problem at
http://www.affexion.net/test/PDF/test-scriptsound.pdf
This is a stripped down example.
The sound is referenced from a simple annotation
on the left. Double-clicking it plays the sound as expected.
On the right is a button which when activated is supposed to
execute a javascript.
<< /S /JavaScript /JS ( console.show(); try {this.sounds[0].play(); } catch(e) { console.println(e.toString()); } console.println(this.sounds[0].name); ) >>
I see the console open up, and I see it print the name of the sound "mySound",
but I don't get the sound played.
Do I need to do something in my javascript before I call this.sounds[0].play?
Is there some other mistake in the way I have the sound object embedded and referenced?
Thanks very much for any help.

In followup, I have been able to accomplish what I wanted:
use an embedded javascript to play an embedded sound
For future readers, my example is (temporarily) at:
http://www.affexion.net/test/PDF/sound-by-script.pddf
How I did it:
interaction of 2 components, the script and the (named) sound
The script object looks like:
<< /S /JavaScript
/JS ( console.show\(\); var s=this.getSound\("mySound"\); s.play\(\); )
>>
The named sound "mySound"
The catalog needs an entry pointing to a name dictionary, like:
1 0 obj << /Type /Catalog /Names XX 0 R >> endobj
The name dictionary has an entry /Sound like
XX 0 obj << /Sound XY 0 R >> endobj
Then the actual name mapping:
XY 0 obj << /Names [ (0xFEFFmySound) XZ 0 R ] >> endobj
With the sound object at:
XZ 0 obj << /Type /Sound /Length NNNNN >> stream...endstream endobj
Key point: the string object (0xFEFFmySound) needs to be unicode-16 encoded
with the first 2 bytes being FEFF.
That was a real pitfall for me.
Now that whole setup actually works.
Sadly, though - I looked all through the PDF specification and
in section 7.7.4 Name Dictionary, I don't see any Sound key.
If anyone could explain how that sequence of Name dictionary to
sound name is described in the specification, I'd appreciate it.
