Play two different instruments together?

hi all,
is it possible to play/record two different instuments (MIDI) at the same time in Logic?
i have a Keystation 49e (keyboard) and a padKontrol (drum pads) setup (both MIDI via USB).
ideally, two people could play both instruments and be heard or recorded. i know this is not possible in Garageband, which is why i am trying to switch into the Logic mode.
any suggestions

I haven't tried recording two or more players on different synths at the same time, but I have played & recorded up to six different synths simultaneously. To do this, I set each string on my guitar to a different instrument. The only hard part was remembering to arm all the tracks before starting to record.

AC is corret you can do that. It might work a bit better for you if you use a wired connection vs a wireless one for the ATV's.

Hi all,
I searched for a while but failed to find an answer so far: can Garageband allow you to play two tracks with two different midi instruments? When I plug my two keyboards, the 2 MIDI sources are recognized, but can only play notes on one track, not two different tracks! Is this a known limitation?
If Garageband can't play 2 midi instruments on 2 different tracks, I guess that leaves me with Logic Express...

Correct. GB doesn't differentiate between midi channels, that's why you can't split them to two tracks (and GB only offers one recording channel for midi at a time).

Is it possible to configure the Logic Environment so that one can play or record, from a split keyboard, two different EX24/Audio Instrument sounds on two different tracks AT THE SAME TIME... (and/or: combinations of Audioinstrument + Midi)
EG: From C3 down the left hand plays an EX24 bass sound and from C3 upwards the right hand plays an EVP 88 Rhodes sound
Case 1: with the same keyboard
Case 2: play the second sound from another keyboard.
and/or: combinations of Audioinstrument + Midi
Some years back I tried this on a live gig with an iBook and MOTU 828 mixing the EVP88 but was frustrated that I could only access one sound at a time.
Any ideas appreciated..

Yes, there are lots of posts that document this in detail, including several from myself.
Do some searches and you should turn them up.
If you suck at searching and can't find them, post back and I'll search for you.
In short, you either need to do some post Physical Input environment cabling, and/or use Logic's multirecord facility, which is documented in the manual.

Keys playing two different sounds at the same time

I keep getting one of the synths whenever I'm playing the Pop Kit, or any drumkit, with my MIDI. Basically when I hit a key, two sounds come out of it when it's only supposed to be one. I've rebooted GB and the MIDI with no success. How can I fix it?

That's weird - never heard of that phenomenon. Could it be that the second sound is coming out of your keaboard? What's your setup?

You have added the actions in the compositionReady/mouse move of stage. So they are applied on stage.
You can add these actions to the object which you to modify using actions popup.
Click on the {} option next to the object on which you want to apply actions.

Play two instruments at the same time?

I'm stuck with GarageBand right now, where I can only play one instrument at a time. Preferably I want to play both (for example) piano and strings using one real-time MIDI input. Is it possible to do that with either Logic Express or Pro?

I's like to add two rows from two different queries together,
I'd like it to look something like:

Is there a way I can use UNION and combine the rows using dummy fields for the fields I don't want to use?

Can u try using join.

This will result in a Cartesian join, but if you have a common column between a & b, then you can use it in the where clause.

How can i use two iPads to play a different AU-Instrument for each Pad at the same time via WLAN?

We have two iPads connected to the MacBook with two different Midi-Sessions. Now we want to connect the every Session to a single AU-Instrument to record live but don´t get it right. In Cubase we just had to choose the Sessions as Midi-Input.

Your second post differs form your first, in the first post you said "single AU instrument", in this last post you said "separate synths". I'll address the second post.
It's a bit more difficult in Logic than Cubase which has an updated more modern MIDI system.
The iPad MIDI software will need to transmit on separate MIDI channels for each iPad.
example:
iPad #1 MIDI channel 1
iPad #2 MIDI channel 2 ...etc, doesn't matter which channels as long as they're separate.
Boot Logic:
Go to Settings/Recording and select "Auto Demix by Channel if Multitrack Recording"
Now setup your AU tracks, select separate channels in the inspector, the channels must match the transmit channels on the iPod.
You used to have to record enable the tracks, I don't believe that is necessary now.

How do I edit together two different camera angles in iMovie '11?

I've just started using iMovie '11 to put together a little concert footage of my band. I've got two videos of the same concert from two different angles. One is in front of the band and one is next to the drums. Obviously, the video next to the drums has louder audio. Is there a way I can edit these to videos together with iMovie '11 and mix together the audio as well?

If you do a lot of this you may want to try Final Cut Pro X. However, it is quite possible in iMovie. In FCP X, there are tools for automatically aligning the clips from the various cameras and audio sources, and it is fairly straightforward to then cut between cameras as part of a compound clip.
Here is how I did it in iMovie.
I recently did this for a video of my niece's senior voice recital. (Video is below)
The key is to use the Cutaway feature of iMovie. If you are not familiar with Cutaway, here is a good tutorial from Ken Stone.
I had three audio possibilities. A CD recording, the side camera audio track, and the back camera audio track. I decided to use the side camera audio track with heavy use of muted cutaways from the back camera. So I used the side camera as my base clips, and used the back camera as the cutaway clips. I decided the CD recording had too much noise even after fixing in Audacity. And the back camera audio track was OK but had too much coughing and noise.
Here are tips for getting it lined up perfectly.
1) In iMovie/Preferences make sure that you check "Display Time as hh:mm:ss:frames" so you can edit to the frame level. (Also, select "Show Advanced Tools so you get the Cutaway feature)
2) In the iMovie Project View, set the thumbnail slider to 1/2 second so you have a great deal of control.
3) Initially, leave the volume at 100% on the Cutaway track, so that both tracks are playing. You can hear when they are off.
4) Click the "Waveforms" button in the Project view, so you get a visual cue of how to line up the tracks.
5) Between the audible cues and the visual cues, you can nudge the cutaway back and forth one frame at a time by dragging until you have it perfect.
6) When it is lined up to your satisfaction, set the volume slider of the Cutaway track to zero, and turn off the waveforms. You can also move the thumbnail slider back to 5 seconds or so.
7) For some of the fine work, I switched to the "single row timeline view". This slows you down a bit, but lets you see the waveforms more clearly.
8) I made heavy use of the iMovie Comment Marker feature. I watched the whole base video/audio track and inserted comment markers at the points where I wanted the Cutaway to begin and end. For example, a comment might say "Insert Cutaway 1". I would usually time the cutaway so it started at a distinct audio event, such as when the piano start. This comment marker made it easy to drag my cutaway to a point that was approximately correct.
9) If you need to do a lot of cutaways, I find that it helps to use the SPLIT CLIP command in your project. This way you can have a single cutaway per clip, and this makes it easier to manage and is less processor and memory intensive for iMovie. I would use the comments to mark the entry and exit points of the cutaway as described above. I would then select that portion of the clip that included these markers plus a little more, so that a yellow border is around the selection. Then right-click/SPLIT CLIP (or CLIP/SPLIT CLIP in the top menu). This does not physically splt the clip within the Event. It only virtually splits the clip in the project.

Playing two sound waves across two different sound cards simutaneously?

Hello all.
With the help from old board posts and the example VIs packaged with Labview 2009 SP1, I was able to get part of the way.
The goal is to simutaneously play two .wav files, to two different sound cards. So far:
1) I can play one wav file to either sound card
2) I can generate two sine waves of different tones, and push each out to the two cards seperately simutaneously.
But when I replace those two tones from #2 with .wav files, the wave files play alternately. So wav_1 plays to sound_card_1, THEN wav_2 plays to sound_card_2, not simutaneously.
Is it even possible to play 2 wav files simutaneously out to different cards?
I've included a VI of the attempt in #2 above. Disclaimer: my labview skills are minimal and this vi was very experimental so it's probably terrible form.

Since there is no way to buffer your sound output on the sound card and use hardware triggering you will be limited to software start timing. You could use semaphores as you said, or simply wire both of the Sound Output writes in parallel inside a single while loop. Since windows is nondeterministic the best you will likely achieve is the two outputs starting within tens of milliseconds of one another. The time between the two starting will be affected by all other processes running on your system and may take much longer.

How do I play different instruments in a concert?

I use MainStage in live performances with a pair of sound-less keyboards (Alesis Q49, Q25). I want my keyboard to make different instrument/sounds (what is correct word?) for different songs in a concert. Example:
Song 1: Grand Piano
Song 2: Pop Flute.
So here's what I do
Open a concert.
Enter edit mode.
Add a patch in the list on the left. This becomes Patch 1, for Song 1.
In the Channel Strip on the right, click the first rectangular button.
Navigate to Grand Piano and select it.
Add a second patch. This becomes Patch 2, for Song 2.
Make sure that Patch 2 is selected in the list on the left.
In the Channel Strip on the right, click the first rectangular button.
Navigate to a Pop Flute sound and select it.
Now in the list on the left, go back and select Patch 1.
Expected Result: Channel strip should revert to Grand Piano.
Actual Result: Channel strip stays on Pop Flute.
What am I doing wrong?

I'm not sure what you are doing wrong, so try this:
1) New Concert using the "Keyboard" template (the one with only 1 Patch in it, but a full set of Screen Controls)
2) In Layout Mode, select the Keyboard Screen Control, click the Assign button and play your MIDI keyboard. This will assign the in-coming MIDI. You may want to repeat this process later for the other Screen Controls that you want to Assign and Map.
3) In Edit mode, you should now have 1 Patch (Electric Piano) that you can hear when you play your keyboard.
4) In Edit Mode, Click the + at the top of the Patch List to make a new Patch.
5) In the Patch Inspector at the bottom of the screen, select a Software Instrument Patch (say, pre-mapped:01 Keyboards:01 Acoustic Piano:Grand Piano. This will load up an Instrument Channel Strip, and the Screen Controls will be pre-mapped to useful parameters.
6) Repeat Steps 4 & 5 to load other patches as needed.

Can Apple TV play content purchased with two different Apple IDs (but on one computer)?

I have one iMac with content in my iTunes from two different Apple IDs. All of this content is perfectly accessible on my computer. Before I ran the most recent software upgrade on my Apple TV 2, I was able to access all of this content (from both Apple IDs) through Home Sharing. Now it shows me all of the content, but skips over any of the songs that were purchased with one of the Apple IDs. It doesn't show an error message--it just won't play the songs. Is there any way around this? I haven't seen a thread that directly relates to this--most threads I have seen discuss two separate computers, each with different Apple IDs. Any help would be much appreciated.

I've tried everything..unplugging and re-setting the Apple TV, restoring to factory settings and starting over...nothing seems to work. I'm not sure why the software upgrade would have affected it, but that's what triggered this problem. It doesn't seem right that if it's accessible on my computer and it's all music purchased by me, that it's not all accessible on my Apple TV!
