Play WoW and get Nvidia Optimus switch to Nvidia processor

Laptop: Lenovo T420
Graphic card: Nvidia NVS 4200M + Intel integrated HD graphics card
OS: Win7 64-bit
I found my laptop is always running on Intel integrated HD graphics card while playing WoW (process: Wow-64.exe). My average frame rate is 20-30. Below are things I tried:
- In BIOS: choose to use Nvidia Optimus, and let it choose which graphic card to use.
- Update to latest driver: Nvidia = 8.17.12.9620,
- Right click on Wow-64.exe, select to run with Nvidia processor
- Launch with command "Wow-64.exe -d3d11" from Windows Command Prompt
But I am still not seeing Nvidia processor running in the Nvidia Control Panel > Display GPU activity icon in the notification area. Is there anyone know how to get this work?

Hello Khumash,
Have you updated the BIOS in your T420? If you haven't done so, can you try updating via the ISO method?
Also installation readme file for the GPU driver as follows.
http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/83de45ww.txt
Can you try the steps provided and see if it helps? I have a T420 with Optimus however I don't play WoW thus I am unable to test it at my level.
If by updating BIOS and Updating the driver did not help, can you try booting into BIOS at set GPU to Discrete only? and see if the FPS for WoW improved?
Thanks

I have a Y2P (i5) ... Feel free to ping me if you want me to test some applications with your Y2P if you have the same model. I don't mind keep doing recovery on it if needed .... =)

I want to buy an iPad for my children for Christmas. Will they be able to play games and get on the Internet with this? Also, will they automatically be able to get on the Internet or will I have to purchase some kind of package?

Yes, they can play games - there are hundreds if not thousands of games available in the iTunes Store. Beware of the "free" games; many are free for the base game but charge for things like additional levels, "coins" etc. and those paid add-ons can add up quickly, to dozens or even in some cases hundreds of dollars. I'd strongly suggest you set up restrictions on the iPad to prevent your children from making unauthorized purchases. See:
    http://ipod.about.com/od/iphonehowtos/ht/Using-Iphone-Content-Restrictions.htm
You will need an Internet provider of some sort; Apple is not a provider and so the iPad does not include a data service. You can either use a home Internet connection with a WiFi access point (aka "router") or you can get an iPad with WiFi+Cellular and sign up for a data plan with a cell carrier. WiFi through a home Internet service will probably be cheaper.

  • Playing WoW and it crashes/shuts down!!

I have been playing Word of Warcraft a lot for the last 3-4 weeks. It has been running great and never had a problem until yesterday. I was flying and all of a sudden WoW just closed and I was back at my desktop with options to send error reports to Blizzard and Apple. There was a message saying the program had shut down and nothing else was affected. I was also listening to iTunes, logged into MSN, and had a Safari window minimized.
I sent the error reports opened WoW back up and played for another 20 minutes or so and it happened again.
I logged back in after a couple tries (cuz someone with the same name was already logged in) and as soon as I logged in it happened again. I did that two or three times.
I restarted the computer and played for about 15-20 minutes with no problems.
Anyone know what’s going on? Maybe this was just a one time thing. Before I restarted I checked my Activity Monitor and everything looked fine... no pages out, about 400-500mb of ram left.

    I heard back from WoW!!
The errors indicate there may be an issue with data corruption, or even an rendering issue. Although the latter is less likely as a result of the second error log.
As a first step, try moving the WDB and *** folders to the desktop. This will remove the game's cache and settings, so the game settings will reset to default the next the game is started.
Also, you may want to make sure you have the latest software updates installed for the system. For NVIDIA video card users, you may want to only update to 10.4.2 since 10.4.3 has had some frame rate for some players.
Finally, if you continue to experience errors, then you may want to try reinstalling the game as there may be a corrupt game file causing issues.
I will try that and cleaning the computer... pain in the __ but hey, if it works... Reinstalling will be a pain! I might wait and see if it happens again before I go deleting all my settings, cuz it only happened that once but I havent played again since.
What do you guys think? Should I delete the files and then play? or play and if it happens again then delete the files?
I am going to clean it regardless.

  • We have iPhoto and Mavericks - Cannot play video and get error (OSStatus error -54). Have run permissions and rebuilt iphoto database.. This is most valuable 3 minute movie file I have... Help

Has anyone a clue how I can save myself from losing most valuable video clip I have ever taken.? Have a fully up to date Macbbok pro retina and most recent iPhoto. Had 55,000 pictures and a few videos in iTunes database. Just a few months ago also installed iCloud. Now find my London Big Ben Fireworks shot of fireworks at midnight coming from clock just returns -54 error when I click it to play. Did a rebuild and permissions attempt at fixing without success. The front picture of start of video shows at start of pictures but only error box now pops up.
I had a time machine backup that goes back some months and a old computer it may have been on but have not found it yet.
I do not want to risk losing anything.  We are just finishing cruise of England and Med on our small boat-home and do not want to lose photos of our memories. Thought they were safe since in iTunes and backed up to TIME machine, and now learn they cannot be pulled out separately... Can anyone help us?
Thanks. I am grateful for any help or ideas while we float out the winter here in England before trying to sail back to America next year.
    Happy Holidays.

I could not find the original file.
I did find a file folder named MASTERS.
I did click down in it to where all the other original files seem to be listed in order.
They are listed in files showing (name); (date modified); (date created); (size); (kind); and (date added)
There is a symbol showing each file type, with one file type for photos and a separate symbol showing the movies before each file.
All of them that are showing properly are listed in order with their name sequentially, ie:
    DSCN4738.JPG
    DSCN4739.JPG
    DSCN4740.JPG
    DSCN4742.MOV
    DSCN4743.MOV
    DSCN4744.MOV
My valuable movie that now won't play is shown in iPhoto viewing page listing labeled DSCN4741.MOV
I think I find it later...
OUT OF SEQUENCE APPROXIMATELY 14 files later I show the file that is shown on the listing info when viewing now named
    New Years Eve Fireworks.MOV  1/1/12 Jan 1, 2012, 12:58 AM  258.1MB  QuickTime file  Feb 21, 2013, 3:46 PM
NOTE: The creation time is exactly where it should be in sequence but camera taken with was off an hour
Also, all files in list show the Feb 21, 2013 date - which is date Apple Store migrated my old computers files, which would have included my iPhoto library from my old MACBOOK PRO to the new one.
I do now remember that in past I had played some of the files from the computer by clicking on them directly in the early hours of the morning - showing some of them to a friend - while messing around demoing this MacBk Pro Retina...
Though I do not have a clear recall of it recall earlier having a hard time finding this file. I am now certain - based on the circumstantial evidence - I must have changed the name from DSCN4741.MOV to the name shown at the first line of the listing two paragraphs up.
Now my quandary is how do I escape this mess I made for myself and restore it. I clearly am -- despite being 68 -- being more of a "script kiddie" than a "hacker", but not a competent one of either!
Thanks for your help in analyzing this Terence, and hope you can help me fix my screwing it up.  Ed

  • Voice control   blue screen appears while I play musice and either stops song, switches to another.  Hitting cancel or pressing home key at first worked but now it is not.  How to stop this?

Ok.  So I can be doing just about anything while my ipod is playing and then this voice control screen appears wih the blue screen.  I can shut it down and then turn it on after a while but that may or may not stop the problem.  Even if I have it locked this happens.
Even when I hit the home key or slide cancel, this keeps happening.  It is very annoying.
    How do I stop this?

Have you tried the standard fixes:
    - Reset:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod
If still a problem you likely have a hardware porblem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Your using more energy to play WOW and there isn't any to charge the battery.
You do have a overly unnecessary, power hungry, excessively  high resolution screen with a bloated OS X version and your also playing 3D games on it, that's what you should expect to occur.

  • Graphics are corrupted with windows after playing WoW.

    Hello,
I have a bought new Macbook and up until recently, it has been completely problem free. Recently though, I have had a few issues regarding some slight graphics corruption on windows and software.
For example the edges of the windows on Preview.
    http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn77/mrmalachai/Picture1-1.png
These graphical disturbances seem to come about after I play WoW and seem to disappear again after a quick restart, but I just wondering what might be causing it and if it is something I should worry about.
Is there any way to prevent these strange graphical disruptions?
    I would appreciate any feedback.
    Thanks guys.

You should be searching using Google or going into a WoW forum because it's an issue caused by WoW. It seems to be rare because lots of people play WoW and I've never heard this before.

  • How to get "fast user switching" and network shares playing nice

I've been alternating between banging my head against a wall and reading every forum I could find to try and get a reasonable compromise between using "Fast user switching" and sharing a folder from a file server.  It baffles me how the network share/mount model of OSX/AFP is completely killed by fast-user-switching; this is a big problem with Apple requiring users to be actively logged in to share music/video from iTunes which therefore essentially requires fast-user-switching if anyone else wants to use the computer.  (anyone find it odd that you can share files without being logged in, but sharing songs requires an active login for each user who is sharing?  Apple: time to make iTunes sharing a service!)
For the sake of example, lets just say I want to share my /Groups folder from my desktop and have it be accessible to my laptop.  Here are all the things that I tried:
Apple Method 1) Share /Groups in the Server.app on the desktop (running Lion Server), use finder on the laptop and drag the share icon to "Login Items", alternative use a startup Apple script using "mount volume"  Both of the options work and will mount the /Groups folder under /Volumes/Groups, of course when the second person logs in via fast-user-switching (and occasionally the first person for no apparent reason), they will get /Volumes/Groups-1 since /Volumes/Groups is already taken.  Tomorrow we log in a different order and now the previously /Volumes/Groups-1 user has their mount at /Volumes/Group and vice versa.  Any links, aliases, finder sidebar references, and application settings which pointed to yesterday's location are now BROKEN.  Not very user friendly to my mother-in-law who is trying to find those pictures of the kids and doesn't know anything about mount points. I also can't reasonably mirror the file location structure on the desktop so that application preferences that are synced between the two (portable home directories) work.   fail.
Apple Method 2) Use automounter and set up by hand direct maps for /Groups or an indirect maps for the children of /Groups.  Now it will automatically get mounted to /network/servers/SERVER/Groups/ on the laptop and on the desktop it will automatically create a similar symlink structure so that the same path (/network/servers/SERVER/Groups) work both on desktop and laptop.  Cool.  Except when the second person logs in, the /network/servers/SERVER/Groups/ mountpoint is already owned by the first user and they don't have any permissions to access it.  Fail.
Apple Method 3) Use mount_afs and specify directly the mount-points.  Have each user have their own startup AppleScript which mounts /Groups to a different location (e.g. /Users/Shared/username/Groups) that way they don't conflict with multiple users.  On the desktop, set up symlinks from /Users/Shared/username/Group to /Groups so that it will be the same as the client and applications settings will work when synchronized back/forth by portable-home-directories.  Will it work, yes it does, but what a bear to maintain.  Is this really what I should expect to do just to have multiple users on my desktop and laptop (which again is essentially required now if I want to do any type of iTunes sharing).  This can't be what apple expects.
What I ended up doing - the "not quite apple" solution.
Non-Apple Method 4) After a read of "Autofs: Automatically Mounting Network File Shares in Mac OS X" (http://images.apple.com/business/docs/Autofs.pdf) at the very end there is a single paragraph  of "Kerberized NFS": "A Kerberized NFS mount can have multiple connections from multiple users, each using the correct user’s credentials for each transaction. This allows administrators to support multiple users, each authenticated with their own credentials to the same mount point. This is very different from AFP and SMB mounts," (emphasis mine)
It appears that by using good 'ole NFS (abeint with Kerberos for security!) you can actually have multiple users on the same mount point.  Roughly following the guidance at https://support.apple.com/kb/TA24986?viewlocale=en_US.  What I needed to do was:
    1) create /etc/exports on my desktop and add a single line "/Groups -sec=krb5".  The existence of /etc/exports triggered a start of nfsd which no longer has any GUI options in Lion.
    2) Add a line to /etc/auto_master on my laptop "/-  auto_mymounts" to reference a new direct map.
    3) Create /etc/auto_mymounts and add a single line "/Groups         SERVER:/Groups" to create the direct map.
THAT'S IT.  Three lines in three files.
Now when I log into my laptop, there is a /Groups that is a network mount of my desktop's /Groups, same location AND it works for all of my users, even simultaneously.
In the end I'm happy with what I've got, but man was this a difficult path just to support fast-user-switching.  In Lion, Apple appears to be getting away from NFS (no longer turned on by default and remove from the GUI controls) but clearly this really useful functionality which doesn't exist in AFP.
I'm really curious, after all this work.  Any other ways to accomplish this?

In my example above, yes I chose to mount the share "Groups" to the top of the root since that is where I put it on my server and I wanted to keep them similar; but that was just my preference, it isn't a requirement.  You can export and mount from other directories.

  • My Qosmio X870 gets hot while playing WoW - always shuts down

    Hi,
I haven't had this computer for too long and in the beginning it worked perfectly. I was able to play World of Warcraft on high graph settings and so on. But lately, especially when playing raids, it gets REALLY hot and suddenly just shuts off.
The build in fan is working. I have a extra fan under it, but this doesnt seem to help. I've opened it up and cleaned it. Did a Format C, and I have the latest Nvidia graph drivers. I also installed the latets bios driver from Toshibas website.
I need help, because I have tried what feels like EVERYTHING, and NOTHING is making it better.
I think its really weird that a "powerful gaming laptop" can not take an old game like WoW, even on the lowest graphic settings possible. I feel like ive paid lots of money fr nothing... Just doesnt seem right. :(
Any ideas of what else i can try with the computer/settings/drivers or other.
    Thanks in advance! <3
    /Chillbabs

It is really annoying if notebook simply shutdown while playing.
In your case notebook reach critical temperature and to avoid some hardware damage notebook simply shut down.
Your personal configuration is not known to us and we don't know what is running on your notebook but after changing power options (Toms posting), before you start your game close all useless background processes and allow CPU and GPU to offer more performance for gaming.
Be also sure that cooling vents and cooling grill is not blocked. Notebook must be cooled down properly.
By the way: do you use original Toshiba display driver or you have installed driver from GPU support page?

  • NVIDIA Optimus and nouveau - KMS not enabled

    Hi,
Trying to get Optimus to run with bumblebee, having a GeForce GT 750M and the Haswell Intel HD Graphics 4600.
I've installed bumblebee, bbswitch, primus, nouveau, nouveau-dri, intel driver and mesa.
    I have no xorg.conf.
    If I run
    primusrun glxgears
    I get an error
primus: fatal: Bumblebee daemon reported: error: [XORG] (EE) [drm] KMS not enabled
Xorg.8.log also says KMS is not enabled. I can however smoothly switch between ttys, and things seem to be working normally, except I haven't got compositing in GNOME 3.
    Any ideas?

I remember having the similar problem with my GT740M (GK208) card half a year ago. I switched to the closed source nvidia driver and the problem gone and I haven't switched back to nouveau since.
My solution then is to unistall nouveau nouveau-dri and install nvidia, reboot, and the problem is gone.
Actually I thought the problem is caused by the strange GK208 which was not supported by nouveau at that time. But your problem seems to prove my thought wrong (GT750M is GK107). So I'm also interested in the right answer in case I switch back to the open source driver in the future.

  • Can't get into my DE anymore after nvidia/nouveau switch + other stuff

I made a mess of things, and I'd very much like to get my system back into a normal state. Here's a brief history of important events:
    (1) About 2 weeks ago after a system update, I couldn't log into Gnome via GDM anymore (see topic). Thankfully I could still get into Gnome via 'startx', so I stuck with that for a while. Busy time, and no real fix was forthcoming.
    (2) About 4 days ago after a system update, that didn't work anymore either. (Both monitors would just stay black, but with a thick white bar on the left side of the right monitor.)
    (3) I switched from binary nvidia drivers to nouveau, in the hope that that would fix things. It did, sort of. I could use startx again, but my display would now freeze after a short time of use, with many nouveau related errors in dmesg. My bug report to freedesktop.org about this is most comprehensive.
I really need a functional PC right now. Short of an actual fix, I'd love to just roll back everything to the state it was a month ago or so. But no luck there either.
    (4) I installed the nvidia drivers again, uninstalled the nouveau stuff, set my system to query the Arch Rollback Machine for a month ago, and did a `pacman -Syyuu --force`. GDM still doesn't work, nor does startx. Using startx, I get the following 'Xorg.0.log' (I remember getting the same errors during my earlier messing about):

can you try with another Display manager like lightdm see if that works ?
I might try that, though now that I finally have my PC back I have some other work that takes priority for a few days. :-)
Malkymder wrote:And yes xorg.conf should be replaced with /etc/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf instead
I'm using `nvidia-xconfig` to generate that file (I haven't had to tinker with it manually for years now).
The tool generates this 'deprecated' file. Should I just move its exact content to the new location?

Sometimes when I play songs in Itunes by double clicking on them, Itunes will place the song as the first one on the album.  It will chnage the order of the songs on the album, and I can not switch them back to the correct order.  This onloy seems to happen when I double-click on the song to play it in itunes.  If I just hit play, this doesnt happen.  As a result, I have several albums now in which the songs are in the wrong order.  Its very frustrating, as this error then transfers over to my ipod every time I sync it.  When I choose the info. for the songs, it has them correctly listed (i.e., it lists the songs as being #1 of 19 on the CD, for example).  But then the song will have placed by Itunes as #5 of 19 for whatever reason.  Itunes does not do this every time, but does it with enough frequency to be maddening.  Any thoughts?

The problem of tracks becoming de-linked between iTunes and the music files in your iTunes music folder happens for different reasons - this seems to come up fairly commonly in this forum.
The solution can be to locate each song in the iTunes library, as you mentioned - or, but wait, before I get to that...
trouble finding the original track in your iTunes music folder? maybe look for it under compilations, or if not using the 'group compilations preference' then look in the folder under the songs artist name, but what song artist name iTunes uses depends on what you have in the metedata tag spot for album artist or song artist. Any varyation in artist name spelling, in the menu item 'get info' metadata for any selected individual track will cause iTunes to create that as a separate artist folder in the library, even names like 'various' or any difference at all (even the word 'the' can change where in your iTunes music folder a track gets placed by iTunes). You can try to use the finder function of find file (finder munu item outside of iTunes) to locate hard to find items.
Back to how to re-link any de-linked tracks .
There may be scripts that can help re-link de-linked music files - or, at least provide you a list of such files, Scripts are easy to install and use...
at Dougs Scripts, there is one called iTunes Track CPR that might work
    http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=itunestrackcpr
or, if you just want a list of de-linked tracks, go to
    http://dougscripts.com/itunes/
and find the script called List MIA's, this will create a text file listing all de-linked tracks
