Playback freezes in timeline

I've seen other posts about this.
I am using FCE HD and a Maxtor 250 GB Firewire drive. I'm working on a concert video, combining clips from 4 cameras (4 angles). I captured the clips via FCE and can edit them, but certain clips freeze when playing back in the timeline, however, the clips play fine in the viewer. The scratch disk is on the external firewire drive which was wiped clean (erased by the disc utility application) immediatly prior to capturing the clips.
I'd read earlier posts about this problem, and there was a reference to another discussion/thread that, unfortunately, is no longer available. What I have been able to piece together, is that if I change the opacity of the clip to 99%, the problem goes away. My experience is that it goes away sporadically, which is, needless to say, very frustrating.
Can anyone give me a suggestion about this? I wasn't clear if I was supposed to change the opacity of the clip that was freezing or the one preceeding it or the one subsequent to it. Also, if I burn it to a DVD, would you expect the DVD to play smoothly, or will the freeze appear as a glitch on the final DVD?
Thanks for any help or info about this.

I posted on the problem of a clip freezing on its last frame if played in the in the timeline. The audio would continue, but the video froze. I found that applying a filter to the clip that froze on its last frame would sometimes fix the problem. I used the motion filter with a scale factor of 101%, others have used 99% opacity. I have also observed that the fix does not always work.
When the timeline is output to video, there is no freeze.
I believe someone else was able to solve the problem by re-capturing the video for the problem clips.

    Footage is a mix of RED 4K R3D, 5D H264, Sony FS700 MTS, GoPro H264.
Mercury playback is on - CUDA
    Problem:
Right after i open up Premiere I put the cursor at any point on the timeline or just press play on the current timeline and playback freezes. Some times I can get two to 10 seconds of playback and then it freezes. The rest of the program work fine just no playback in the sequence window or the preview window.
I can save, I can open an new bin, the drop down menus work etc. No spinning beachball.
When I go to quit, Premiere locks up and I have to Force Quit. No crash log most of the time. If I get a crash log I will add it.
When this happens, it usually happens 3-6 times in a row. I can't seem to get past the first playback after openning the project. If for some reason I can get it to playback after opening the project.... it's fine and runs most of the day with no propblems.  But I have no idea what gets me past the first playback.
    Notes:
I have tried to reboot the whole computer and then run through all of the following.
I have tried cleaning the Media Cache. Seems to have no effect.
I have opened Premiere while holding the shift/option keys. Seems to have no effect.
After playback freezes i have tried to switch to "software only" to try and free up the freeze. Still frozen.
I am using Magic Bullet Looks 2.1.3 (this was supposed to be and update for CC 7.2) but none of the footage freezing up has any effects on it.
I am using an older cuda driver because I was having just as many or more problems with 5.5.25

First reset the prefrences for Prmeier pro by going the below mentioned locations
    1. User account->User library->Prefrences->Adobe->Premier pro ->7.0(reame the folder to Old_7.0)
    2. Documents->Adobe->premier pro ->7.0(rename the folder to old_7.0)
Tried this first: Did not change anything same freeze and crash.
Please empty the media code folder(location for media code folder is as below).
    Macintosh Hard drive->Library->application Support->Adobe->Common->Plugin ->7.0->Media core
Tried this second: Worked! Playback seems to be fine. THANK YOU.
Pretty sure the culprit was Magic Bullet LOOKS!!!!!
So here's my new problem. My guess is that the Magic Bullet LOOKS plugin was the culprit. There were a few other plugins in the Media Core folder but that was the only one I was currently using. Soooo I'm going to edit for awhile without it just to make sure that was the problem but I really need that plug in. I'm going to go back to Red Giant and tell them what's going on. I know it's there problem but do you have any recomendations from your experience on how to make the Magic Bullet LOOKS plugin work?

  • Premiere Pro CC 2014 playback freezing and crashing with new iMac i7

Using Premiere Pro CC 2014 and having constant playback freezing and software crashes on a brand new iMac i7.
    Here are the specs:
    iMac i7 4.0GHz 5k Retina
    32 GB Ram
    AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4GB graphics card
    512GB Solid State Drive
I was on chat yesterday with an Adobe tech. Although playback/render settings show the OpenCL option to utilize the AMD graphics card for processing, I was advised to switch to "Software Only" as that card is not supported yet. I had to re-render my 45 minute documentary (which doesn't appear to be any faster than it was on my old 2011 iMac by the way) and it still has the same issues.
So frustrating? Anyone else experiencing this? Any advice? I hope I didn't just buy this "super machine" in vein.
    Thanks,

    Hi All,
Taking some tips from Kevin Monahan. If you haven't already gone through this list please do so.
Sign out from Creative Cloud, restart Premiere Pro, then sign in
    Update any GPU drivers
    Trash preferences
Ensure Adobe preference files are set to read/write
    Delete media cache
    Remove plug-ins
If you have AMD GPUs, make sure CUDA is not installed
    Repair permissions
In Sequence Settings > Video Previews, change the codec to one that matches your footage
    Disconnect any third party hardware
If you have a CUDA GPU, ensure that the Mercury Playback Engine is set to CUDA, not OpenCL
    Disable App Nap
    Reboot

  • Youtube video playback freeze

    Hi,
I've been experiencing a lot video playback freezing, I've noticed it happens on youtube. It is not my internet connection, the video freeze even it's already been downloaded. It happens with all video resolution from 360P to Full HD, I've tried all majors Internet browser: Firefox, Safari, Chrome.
    I have Leopard, a 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo with 2GB of RAM.
A 250GB HD with (at least) 10GB of free space.
It shouldn't freeze for so low quality videos.
    Any help?
    Cheers,
    -- rafael

Do you have powered speakers or headphones plugged in?
If so, try unplugging them and seeing if it will play the video.
I started having this problem right in the middle of watching a video and it would freeze playback every time I plugged in my speakers. Internet searching yielded no results, but an OS software update from 10.6.2 to 10.6.4 fixed my problem. You say you have Leopard, so I am not sure if a software update is available for you, but check under the apple menu > Software Update. If there is an update related to the operating system, install that. It worked for me!

  • Podcast playback freezes/pauses every few minutes

When I watch video podcasts on my computer, every few minutes, playback freezes for about 5 seconds before continuing. During the 'freeze', time is still moving, so I also miss some of the video content.
I can watch the same videos perfectly fine if I play the files directly in another video player.
I just installed the latest itunes version.
    Thanks.

Thanks for that suggestion Sasha, though this is the first time I have ever had that type of jerky playback, so I am hoping it won't occur again for a very long time.
I actually deleted the QT video thinking it was defective until I went back and watched the video in the Canvas plus several other old QT videos which all behaved the same way!
The avatar is to reflect that I am now using Shake . . . . . well, at least floundering on the first chapter of the APTS book . . . . so it may well be changed again in the near future!

  • No playback from the timeline.

What is up with Premiere Pro CC 2014 today? It was working just fine after the update and now I get no playback from the timeline. And I can't preview my edits on clips. Is this a recent issue? It seems I'm not the only one with it.

iTunes 9.0.2 video playback freezes temporarily at the 9 second point. Playback resumes at around the 12 second point. The sound also pauses with the video. I've tried playing the same videos in Quicktime and they play fine. How can I fix this?

  • Constant crashes / freezes in Timeline

I know this has been addressed and maybe there's just no answer but here goes.
I'm working on a relatively simple project w all clips form the same source - 1080p / 23.976 / HDSLR, 1 adjustment layer, simple gamma and contrast effects on a few clips, 1 audio track with music only  / compressed mp3
After about 15 minutes of work the timeline freezes / unable to use any controls but the audio keeps running. this usually happens when simply playing the sequence back in the tl but sometimes it will happen when working in the source monitor. while it's consistently happening i can not recreate the problem at will. And all the clips are local on my HD not connected to external storage.
    My set up ...
    PP CC 2014 8.2.0 build 65
    osx 10.9.4
    late 2013 IMac 3.4 / i5
    GTX 775 2gb vram
    16bg ram
using an identical imac as a second display connected via thunderbolt
Steps I've taken ... (not nec in order)
    reboot
    reset smc
    repaired permissions globally
confirmed all adobe folders are set to read / write and reapplied permissions
    deleted previews / re-rendered.
    manually cleared media cache
    turned off adjustment layer
confirmed video card firmware is current
switched mercury playback to sw only from CUDA
At this point PP is essentially unusable - I cant imagine the issue is with my set up since i'm able to run media composer and resolve both quite resource intensive programs just fine. ... no not at the same time and they're not open while use PP.
I'm pretty much at my wits end and would really appreciate any advice.
    Thanks!

  • Why does playback on the timeline lag on my premiere elements 9 project?

Whenever I playback my edit on the timeline, it starts off playing fine, but after a few seconds it starts to lag. I am using a macbook pro (2.4GHz intel core 2 duo processor, OS X V10.9.4), and was initially editing off a WD hard drive connected with a Firewire800 cable. I have shifted all my rushes and the premiere elements project file from the hard drive to my laptop, but that doesn't seem to work. Project settings and Clip settings seem to match, otherwise I wouldn't be able to open the project file anyway. I fiddled with some of the playback settings, but nothing seemed to work. I need to rush out a piece of work asap. Any ideas?

    AT Romano,
Please see my actions taken regarding your questions below:
One of my questions was attempting to determine if the total duration of clips on the Timeline has any effect on this random playback issue.
Am I correct in assuming that you are saying that this Timeline playback lag can be seen even with only one 1 minute clip on the Timeline? If not,
how many clips needed on that Timeline when the Timeline content playback starts to lag?
The lag can also be seen with only one 1 minute clip on the timeline.
If you start a new project with a different video source or just some jpg photos do you run into this Timeline content playback lag after rendering of that
    Timeline content?
NO, this lag does not occur with a new project with different video source.
Did you understand what I wrote early on about Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1 being a 32 bit application when run on 32 or 64 bit computer? Do you use the computer for programs other than Premiere Elements? I asked since you wrote
Upgraded the RAM. I'm now running on 2x 8GB of RAM.
A 32 bit system is typically characterized by maximum supported installed RAM = 4 GB and typically 3.2 to 3.0 or less of that being available. So, why the upgrade to 16 GB of installed RAM?
I guess I didn't quite understand the 32 bit system thing. But i kinda get the idea now. In any case, my computer seems to be running faster than usual even though it didn't solve the elements 9 lagging issue.
    Just recap time....
    1. Optimize the computer with free ccleaner for Mac run through
    CCleaner - Download
    Done.
    2. Make sure that there are no pile ups of preview files, conformed audio, and conformed video files. At this time, how much
free hard drive space at the location where the Scratch Disks are directed?
Done. About 870GB of free HD space. This is an external hard drive.
    3. Set Playback Quality to highest instead of automatic
Did this, but the lagging becomes worse. It freezes longer on certain frames.
    4. Make sure video card/graphics card driver is up to date according to web site of manufacturer of the card
According to Manufacturer, graphic cards installed on MacBook Pros are already optimised by Apple during the installation.
    5. If dual monitor system, disconnect one, use only one
I am monitoring only from my laptop screen. No external monitors.
    6. Delete the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file...
    Users/Libraries/Application Support/Adobe/Premiere Elements/9.0
I cannot seem to find this file.
    7. Export the lagging Timeline content to an appropriate file saved to the computer hard drive. Then determine if the playback of the export
    exhibits any lags.
After export, there are no lags.
    8. Do you run into the problem with and without the antivirus disabled?
I have no antivirus installed. But i did try turning on and off the firewall. With the firewall on, the lag seemed to get worse.
    9. For troubleshooting purposes only at this time, download and install the free 30 day tryout of Premiere Elements 12
from Adobe....If it works for you, then we can target version 9....If it does not work for you, then we can target your computer.
There is no Premiere elements 12 available for trial download. Only premiere elements 13. Have downloaded that and copied the project file into elements 13. The lag is still there, but not as bad. But, it is still there.

  • Premiere Pro CS6 playback freezes, regenerates .pek and .cfa files

When I try to watch something in a sequence, the Program Monitor freezes. The playhead moves in the timeline as usual and the audio plays just fine, but the visual freezes. Sometimes it stops a few seconds after I start playing and sometimes the video never plays at all. When I stop playback, it remains frozen for a while, then resets to the frame the playhead is on.
As I checked different options, I discovered Premiere is regenerating both the .pek and .cfa files every time I open it, even though all of my projects have already conformed. I have it set to store the media files with the project, so I know the preview files have not moved or been deleted. I work on this setup 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, and nothing changed since I was in yesterday. It was working fine when I shut it down last night, no one could have logged in while I was gone, and this morning it doesn't work. No updates were installed, no files were moved, no drives switched.
I have searched the internet for help, but all of the forums I've found are at least two months old and recommend installing the 6.0.3 update. I did run updates for all my Adobe software, and it didn't help. I also deleted and re-rendered my peak and cfa files.
One six-month-old forum said that Premiere CS6 cannot playback long AVCHD .m2ts files. Previously I had no problem working with .m2ts files 35 minutes and shorter, or with .mp4 files up to 75 minutes long. The video I'm currently working with is about 75 minutes long. And again, it was working fine yesterday.
Further investigation revealed that playback does not freeze when I import a selection from the Source Monitor (vs. importing from the Bin and trimming in the Timeline) and do not layer clips or apply effects.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks.
    Media Spec:
    File type: AVCHD Video
    Resolution: 1920x1080 (1080p), 29 fps
Imported from camera hard drive using PlayMemories Home
    Computer Spec:
    Adobe Premiere Pro CS6
    Windows 7, 64-bit Service Pack 1
Graphics card is Quadro 5000, driver 276.19
OS/boot drive is a solid state 250gig, and files running off a 2TB local hard drive

    I've tried several more things.
The playback does not freeze if I have only one clip in the timeline.
If I have clips on two or more video tracks, it starts freezing.
Once I clear it down to one video track, it takes a couple of seconds (up to 30) to start playing normally again.
Sometimes I can play two tracks for several minutes before it freezes. Sometimes it freezes immediately.
When I open Premiere, I get the "Media Pending" screen for way longer than usual.
I have rebuilt the peak and cfa files, no difference. GPU accelerator is enabled. The latest Adobe updates are installed.
I see a few other forums with similar problems but no solution.
No settings, file formats, or file locations have changed since Monday (the last time CS6 was working properly). After a lot of digging around I found that a Windows Defender Definition update was installed the morning of the day PP started freaking out. I can't get rid of this update.
I edit two or more hours of footage per day. They are lectures, so they are recorded in 1-3 hour chunks. I use two videos simultaneously--one with the professor's powerpoint presentation, and one of the professor. I keyframe the PPT video into the corner, overlaid over the lecturer. I did this for years without problem in CS5.5 and for two months without problem on my current setup.

  • Freezing on timeline

It's a difficult problem to explain concisely but here goes. As I start to build a project on the timeline, adding effects/transitions as I go, it will start to freeze during playback. The soundtrack used to play on quite smoothly although, recently, this has also been freezing. Working yesterday, the whole thing just froze on one frame during playback, sound also, and, lacking a reset button, I had to unplug the system to get things going again. I hate having to do that.
All clips in the clip frame play smoothly and the problem only surfaces once they are in the timeline. When it first started happening, it would freeze on one frame for a second or two and then play on smoothly for a while, but now, even when the soundtrack continues to play, it can freeze on one frame for 10/20 seconds, making it impossible to view the work. We did think it may be a hard-drive problem but this seems unlikely as it happens whichever hard-drive is being used. We use G-Raids now, having started with a Lacie. Oddly enough, any dvd burned will play without problem, so it seems everything on the timeline IS alright, even if you do have to make a disc to check that it is.
We're at our wit's end with this - it's driving us nuts. Any thoughts/ideas? Thanks.

    Hi,
The internal hard drive has 40GB+ on it, the external hard drives are OS extended formatted, I have the latest version of QT, never even close to >50 audio clips. I do use third party plugins but, they've been working fine. Interestingly enough, if I do a share of selected clips only, put them through JES deinterlacer (great piece of software by the way), import it back in and drag it on to the timeline there is no sticking/freezing whatsoever. A puzzle indeed.

  • PPro14CC - Playback freeze, audio keeps playing (OS X, iMac)

I think this is might be a similar issue to what others are experiencing, but the symptoms are unique so I'm hoping someone has found a possible solution by now?
One of our editors has been working on a large project (10 HD promo spots, at least 100GB of raw footage from Canon C300) and experiencing at least 4 crashes per day. And by "crash" I mean that CC14 stops playback -- the Program monitor freezes -- while the audio keeps playing. In some cases he can switch out to the Finder and then back to CC14 to stop the playback, and while he is able to hit "Save" and "Quit" the Program monitor never unfreezes. Some times though he gets the Beachball of Death and has to force quit everything, and curiously the timeline audio still plays out of the speakers after CC14 has quit and the machine is waiting to restart. On at least one occasion he got a major error and PPro created a new project file after closing down. VERY frustrating.
From what he's told me (I haven't been working alongside him that closely), the freeze ONLY happens when the playhead hits a clip that has filters or effects applied. Right now he's mostly doing a picture-in-picture effect with a beveled edge filter applied to the smaller window, and 3-way color correction on other clips.
For troubleshooting I focused on the graphics card first. The iMac has a Geforce 780 and was originally running with OpenCL so I downloaded the latest CUDA driver and switched to that but it made no difference. Turning OFF the hardware acceleration just made everything sluggish. I also repaired permissions on the drive. I'm hesitant to do anything too major while he's still working so please let me know if trashing prefs and/or reinstalling will wreck anything in the project or if you would recommend importing everything into a new one.
Brand new 27" iMac (non-Retina), 32GB ram, latest Yosemite (10.10) and CC14 versions, no plugins installed, no fancy system extensions or antivirus software. OWC Thunderbay RAID, M-Audio speakers, 2nd monitor is 42" Plasma TV via mini-Displayport-to-HMDI adapter in 2nd Thunderbolt port.

    UPDATE:
We switched the Sequence Settings Preview to Quicktime>ProRes from I-frame MPEG, and it seems to be running better. Will update again if it fails to produce consistent results. Hope this helps somebody else!

  • LOOPS PLAYBACK CLIPPING IN TIMELINE

Using Jam pack 'Symphony" loops I have noticed that some of the loops are corrupt AFTER placing them into the timeline. When I preview the loop its fine until I drop it into the timeline then clipping and mumbled feedback distorts the loop slightly. Is there something that can be done to rid of this annoying problem? I record to an external hard drive so that I have enough memory. Will reloading GB '08 or the Symphoy jam pack help with correcting the playback distortion of the track? FYI Im not using any strange reverb effects for it to sound like this.

  • Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014.2 Playback Freezing, Audio Dropouts

There are several times when I'm working on a project, whether small, medium or large in size, where playback tends to seize up my entire machine and everything locks up/freezes for 3-5 seconds.  Then when it starts to play again, I get the audio dropout error.  After scouring through multiple forums, I saw one of the Adobe help suggestions was to remove the speakers (one that a user scoffed at).  I thought, what the hell, and unplugged my headphones.  Voila - playback is stutter free.  Now, I haven't worked for hours on end yet so this is a preliminary result.  My concern is that I work in an open office so I'm surrounded by colleagues working so having headphones is ideal.  I'm in a catch 22 and not sure what solutions there are so I don't experience program hang-ups so I can work in silence.

  • DVD Playback Freezing and Skipping

I know there have been a million posts on this topic (I've perused many of them), but I thought I would post my own specifics in hopes of getting an answer that might help. I have a 62 minute video project (high school football highlight video) that I put together in FCP. I exported the Video as an MPEG2 16:9 Best Quality 120 minutes using Compressor. The Audio is Dolby2 AC3 format as most posts have recommended. I am building and formatting using the default settings on DVDSP. The playback is fine about half way through but starts to skip, pixilate and freeze on an off after that. Using Memorex, DVD-R (16x, 4.7GB, 120min) media for burning with my iMac internal DVD burner. Original footage is basic Digital 8 video captured on a Sony video camera. Is there anything that I can do with settings or other factors that will fix this problem.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Thanks, I will try another option. What about the video compression. Is there a better format to compress the video files to? That is the only other variable that I can see with my limited experience.
