Playback jitters with 250GB drives

I experienced stuttering and skips in iMovie playback with my first project on my new iMac 20". Had no issues after the project was moved from my internal 250GB drive to an external firewire drive.
Others are reporting similar issues with iMovie and Quicktime with the 250GB drives in recent machines.
see:
Gregory Gillis, "iMac 250GB Hard Disk Help Needed", 06:58pm Aug 23, 2005 CDT
Anyone else with this same issue? Could be due to "write verify" break-in period for these drives.

EDIT:
Ooooops. I read your message "backwards", thinking the problem started when you moved the project to the external drive.
There are some good points in the article anyway...

  • Upgrading 250GB drives to 750GB drives

We have an XServe RAID that is a few years old. It has 8 drive modules with 250GB drives and 6 blanks. We'd like to upgrade all available slots to 750GB drives.
Can I fill the blanks with 750GB drive modules and fill the existing modules with new 750GB drives and rebuild from there? I have read that I need to update the firmware to recognize the larger capacity. What about the controller module and fiber card. Will it work with the existing pieces or will I need to upgrade those as well?
    Any other suggestions are welcome.
    Thanks!

Any advice on types and brands for the drives?
    Apple.
Apple doesn't manufacture drives. Last I checked only Seagate makes 750GB PATA drives, everyone else in the business seems to make only SATA drives that size or bigger.
Unfortunately nobody makes 1TB drives that are PATA, so it looks like the current crop of the drives mean the end of the line for the XServe RAID in terms of capacity.
While I have heard of people who've replaced the bundled drives with larger ones, with some success,
the blank drive bays have simple blanking plates - i.e. do not have the electronics required to actually
    support a drive.
Apple do not sell empty drive modules (with the electronics, but no drive), which makes it difficult
to expand the array other than by getting drive modules from Apple.
Correct. However, if you upgrade from a system with 14 250GB drives, you have all the mounting hardware you need, you just have to swap the drives in the carriers.
If you just bought new drive modules for Apple for the current blanks, and opted to manually
upgrade the existing drives on your own you'd end up with mixed drives (vendor, models and
firmware) which, at best, will result in degraded performance.
This has not been an issue in the past. After all, when you have a drive failure, you end up often with different drive models and firmware versions, too. E.g. Hitachi discontinued the 250GB drive model that was originally in the XServe RAID, and replaced it with a different 250GB drive in their line up.
You had no choice but to mix models if a single drive failure required swapping drives. (To make matters worse, the new drive, while faster, was a tiny bit smaller, which really caused head aches!)
Even though the drives sourced from Apple are more expensive than you can find similarly-sized
drives elsewhere, you get server-grade drives, burned in, with known/standard firmware, and
vendor support by taking the Apple route.
Sorry, that's FUD without basis. No drive manufacturer will run a special assembly line for "Apple grade" drives. Worse, you buy a drive module from Apple, and you have at best a 1 year warranty. You buy the drives from Hitachi or Seagate directly, you have a three or five year warranty.
If you try to use the manufacturer's warranty on Apple sourced drives, the manufacturers will not honor it, because the drives are OEM drives sold at a big discount to Apple, which means they don't give any warrantee beyond what Apple gives.
In terms of what you get for the money, both in absolute price, and in terms of warranty, is much better if you get bare drives straight from the manufacturer than going with Apple's drives.
Without knowing your business I can't tell you what to do, but for me I can't bear the thought of
telling my clients that I lost their data because I opted to save $100 on a few hard drives.
If you're selling to clients, of course, Apple drives are better: there's more profit in those, because they are not a commodity like bare bones drives, but a brand-name special order item.
(that's not to say that third-party drives are necessarily less reliable than those sourced from
Apple, more that being able to say you had a problem even though you were using vendor
supported and provided parts goes a long way ).
Apple's support in regards to drives that fail after a year is non-existent, except if you get the $999 AppleCare contract, but that means you can buy quite a few replacement drives to cover that, and it's still only 3 years coverage, vs. 5 years for the drives direct from the manufacturer...
Obviously Apple needs to make a profit, and inventory, logistics, etc. for parts are expensive, so you pay in essence for the convenience of getting a module you can just shove into the unit and be done. No need to mess with screwdrivers, etc.

  • Migrating a Single 250GB Drive to 2TB RAID 5 Array

My Mac Pro has the original 250GB hard drive it came with. I just purchased a Mac Pro RAID Card. My intention is to install 2 1TB drives, and create a RAID 5 with the three drives. Obviously the new set will only use 250GB on each of the 2 new 1TB drives. Once the array is fully built out, I plan on removing the 250GB drive, and have the array rebuild on the 3rd 1TB drive. This should leave me at the same place i was with the 250GB drive installed.
What I am wondering is that will the RAID utility now see extra space on all three drives, and subsequently allow me to create an additional RAID 5 set with the available space? I'm doing this in lieu of cloning the 250GB to a 1TB drive, boot from the 1TB drive, and then migrating a single boot volume to a RAID set.
    Any ideas is appreciated. Thanks.

  • What size External HD for Macbook Pro 2.4Ghz with 250GB Internal HD

I am looking at getting the Macbook Pro 15-inch 2.4Ghz with 250GB Internal HD.
What is the minimum size External HD I need if I want to use Time Capsule with this machine?

The Time Capsule is Apple's Wi-Fi-enabled external HDD and is available in 500 GB and 1 TB sizes. I expect you mean Time Machine, which is Mac OS 10.5's included backup software.
There's no fixed 'minimum' size for Time Machine. I'd recommend getting a drive _at least_ as large as your internal drive. The larger the external, the more backups Time Machine will be able to store (i.e. the further back in time your backups will extend). You also have the option of partitioning the external drive.
If you plan on connecting the drive via a cable (i.e. not Wi-Fi) you'll get the fastest connection speed with a FireWire 800 external drive. Many drives have multiple interfaces (FW400, FW800, USB2) - one of those may be useful if you or someone else in your house ends up getting a Mac without FW (e.g. the newest MacBooks).

  • Mirroring with SATA Drives on a PwrMac G4

I've got a MDD G4 circa 2002 with two 250gb drives...one the main drive the other the backup. I rapidly running out of space.
Been considering moving to dual 500-750gb SATA drives with a Sonnet Tempo Serial ATA controller and configuring them in Mirror (RAID 1) mode using Disk Utility.
    My questions are:
    1) Will this work
    2) Will I be able to boot off this "drive".
    3) Are there any traps that I may be running into.
    Appreciate any feedback...Chris

    Hi-
The Sonnet tempo SATA controller is bootable from any attached drive (important feature that not all have), and a Mirror set can be used for startup in OS 10.3 and later.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106594
Only trap is you'll still need a third, external HDD of 500-750gb capacity to backup your mirror. Don't neglect that.....

  • Issue with HtmlUnit Driver by using oracle extended selenium webdriver

    Hi,
I need to run test case in silent mode i.e. silent playback. Thus, using HTMLUnit Web Driver which is available in oracle extended selenium binaries.
The recorded files works fine with firefox driver but when i converted my code to html unit driver, it failed to find link inside ADFTable of my fusion web application.
Is htmlunit driver which is in oracle extended selenium files compatible with ADF Application???
Is there any other approach for silent playback of ADF Application test cases other than headless and VM.
    Please guide on this issue.

*## After running csscan and csalter*
Did you really run csalter.plb? csalter.plb should not be run before a full-export A-to-B type of migration. On the other hand, if there were convertible data in the database, csalter.plb should have just reported an error and terminate without changing anything.
*## "[Oracle][ODBC]Syntax error or access violation"*
This error does not say much. Why do you think ODBC does no conversion?
The conversion for the ODBC driver is performed by OCI to/from UTF-16 and it is independent of the NLS_LANG character set. If the C++ application is written in the ANSI mode (does not use wide character data types), Microsoft ODBC Manager will convert between the application and the Oracle ODBC driver, between system code page (Cp 1252) and UTF-16.

  • Audio preview playback comes with dropouts

When I preview my blu-ray project in Encore CS4 (4.0.1.48) the audio playback comes with dropouts every 5 to 10 seconds. Otherwise the playback is fine. The sound on the finished blu-ray disc / folder is fine as well - it's just a problem of the Encore preview function. It also doesn't matter if it's a mp3 (menu) or a wav (H.264 with PCM) file. I never had this problems in earlier projects with CS3. Any ideas?
    Phil

Could the onboard Realtek HD Audio be to weak?
If you have the latest drivers, this should not be an issue. I push my laptop with Realtek HD chip on some pretty intense Audio, mostly DD 5.1 SS, and have never had an issue. Same for my workstation with a full 5.1 Creative Live card. Never an issue. If you have not updated your audio driver in the last month, or two, you might want to do that. Even simple OS updates can kill audio drivers (and video drivers), and that's why they are released so very often.
I do have to say that I have never had a crash in Encore, and only one real error message in over 4 years, but I'm still using EnDVD 2.0, so maybe that does make a difference.
Other than the I/O, I cannot come up with a reason for the Audio to drop out. Most ASIO issues are play vs no-play and not related to performance.
I've forgotten - is your Audio source MPEG Audio? That can cause all sorts of problems. Just wondering.
Good luck, and sorry to not have any ideas for you,
    Hunt

  • Support for an Upgrade and issues with Hard drive full.

I am on 10.6 Snow leopard and I need to get migrated into something later so I can take on better technology such as the ICLOUD and maybe get more productive. I am out of space on hard drive also and I have an older MAC. What can I do to keep going and maybe get upgraded and also not loose data. ? any suggestions, The Maverick upgrade says my older mac is not compatible.
    Thanks
    Steven Moore PS

I would be 'careful' and cautious with WD MyBooks anyway, but FW800 can be a great external off line backup.
What I would do is split two 1TB drives:
Drive A: OS and apps, 2nd partition for backup of Drive B which has all your media and data files.
Drive B: most all of your documents, video, music, photo, etc. which gets backed up to the 2nd half of boot drive.
Also, leave room for a backup of Drive A's OS and applications and for repairs and such like Disk Warrior.
It makes a "criss-cross." Great for dual drive setup.
I'd put your 250GB drive in FW case for backup also running Disk Warrior maintenance.

I am planning to buy an iMac 21.5 inch with Fusion drive and 16 GB RAM while i visit USA for a conference. My country of origin is India and the option of configuring to my need is not avaialble here in India. My concern is once i am back to India, will my iMac be covered by the Apple's Protection Plan if something goes wrong here in India?
I recently came across some posts regarding International warranty related issues for iPhone and iPad....hence this crossed my mind...
Waiting for response from the support group members...

    Thanks Ralph
This essentially means that if my iMac develops some problem (both software and hardware) in my country (India), it will be completeley attended (even the whole system requires replacement) by the AASP in India...is that what you say?

My ipod nano has been working fine for at least three years.  All of a sudden I get two messages.  First, "there is a problem with this drive, scan and fix it".
And, an Ipod has been detected but can't be identified properly.  It's a 6th generation nano and I have Windows 8.  Any thoughts?

Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Here is an article that I would recommend going through when experiencing this issue.

If you have installed a new hard drive , you will need to have formatted it in Disk Utility correctly. This may explain your problem.
Boot  into your 10.6 Install disk again at the top menubar > Utilities > select Disk utility and in there select your new hard drive, and select the tab Erase and choose to make the format as  Mac OS Extended Journaled. When that is finished look in the main window to make sure that the partition map scheme says GUID Partition Table.
Now go to the Restore tab and reinstall from your backup.
