Playback looks like Snow

I'm editing mpeg .mts files in CS5 from my new GH2 DSLR on my PC.  When I playback the clips in Premiere Pro it looks like it is snowing in the clip, from left to right, on all clips.  This snowy static does not appear in CS5 AE, and it does not appear if I play the clips back from the desktop in VLC or any other player or on our TV.
I tried this is two separate sequences, one using the Digital SLR Preset for DSLR 1080p24 and one using the AVCHD 1080p24 Preset.  Both of them show the snowy static from left to right in all clips.
Ragnar

Ok, did I figure this out myself?  Perhaps.  I changed the Playback Resolution from 1/2 to Full and the Snow went away.  I guess t
hat answers it.  I guess.

  • Snow Blizzard looks like "Eyes" on monitor.

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help. I'm new to Motion and am working on a project with the Snow Blizzard, Particle Emitter. On the computer monitor the effect works fine and appears as I have hoped. However, when I export the clip to a quicktime movie and bring it into Final Cut it looks like 2 eyes traversing the screen (kind of like the funny ones you've seen in cartoons in no light scenes).
The scene I'm creating is white text on a black background with the snow falling around. The monitor is NTSC, I am using a G5 dual with an Aja IO connection. I'm hoping to have this look like snow when I make this as a DVD and not eyes, is there someone who has experienced this and can help? Thanks!
    Peter

Ok, I was able to answer this one myself. When I was creating the snow, the snow flakes were falling faster than they could draw on on a monitor. It worked on the computer because it was HD but on progressive scan monitors it can't draw quickly enough. So I slowed down the snowflakes as they fell. When I did this I needed to increase the life of the flakes as well, since they fell slower they died faster. This solved my problem.

I'm trying to migrate from mobileMe to iCloud but I have Snow Leopard (the latest version). It looks like Lion is no longer available because Mountain Lion comes out next month (July). The problem is mobileMe ends on June 30th. How can I migrate?
My iphone and my ipad are compatible but when I try to go to icloud on my phone it says to do it on my computer.
I would like to have my calendar, contacts, etc.. all sync like they do now. Is there a way to upgrade before June 30th? If not, will the gap be an issue or will I just be able to buy mountain lion and sync everything?
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you!

You can buy Lion in the App Store now, but move to iCloud now. If you wait to Mountain Lion, you will only have Mail in Snow Leopard, so you will lose syncing unless you use Lion or Mountain Lion. It's up to you

  • Playback of 1080p footage looks like studdering

I export my footage to Apple ProRes 422 HQ 1080p. Then I run a check in Quicktime 7. Need it to set a posterframe.
But when I run the clip, people walking in the shot look like shot in a slower framerate.
Got a big shock, because it would mean to re transcode those clips.
I then opened for testing 1 clip in FCP and everything looks smooth.
Must be something in the settings of QT7. I like that program, because I can open more clips at the same time.
Anything I should change in the settings?
    Thank you.

Anything I should change in the settings?
    Probably your work flow.
If you are setting a posterframe for your Apple ProRes 422 HQ file, then the assumption is that this is final distribution format. While this codec may be excellent for archiving raw data and video editing—it is not suitable for the distribution of a final product targeted for general playback. Further, while FCP is optimized for the editing and real-time rendering of "Pro" codec edits on systems that which support this, the QT player is only optimized for the general playback of distribution level content. Thus, the most likely reason for you playback problem is your likely attempt to push more data through the QT player than it can smoothly render without dropping frames which is is designed to do when it cannot keep up with playback requirements.
What you are seeing here is probably quite normal. Basically, you need to look at your video data rate here. How much data are you trying to push through the QT player per second? Since you did not mention whether or not you limited the data rate of your Apple ProRes 422 HG coding of your content, I will assume, for the sake of argument, that such encodes were made in the auto data rate (i.e., unlimited) mode. If true, then it is likely that your playback expectations are simply unreasonable and you should modify your work flow so that the final distribution content matches media player capabilities.
As no one had asked such a question previously, I ran some tests to get some idea as to what might be going on here. To simulate an HD source content, I extracted a 4 minute video only segment of a BD file I already had on my system, exported it to an Apple ProRes 422 HQ compressed file and compared the results. Here are the stats I found for the H.264 "source" file:
As you can see, the video data rate is greater than 26 Mbps. This is 4 to 10 times what I normally use for general playback distribution H.264 1080p files and roughly 6 to 16 times what I use for 720p H.264 content for mobile IOS and TV devices. When I recompressed the BD video data to Apple ProRes 422 HQ and allowed it to use all the data rate it wanted, here is what I ended up with for this particular source file:
As you can see here, this particular file increased 7.5 fold in terms of data rate and file size for the same 4 minute file. In short, this compression codec was never designed for use as a distribution/general playback format and its use here in the QT player likely creates a data bottleneck when trying to play the equivalent of 7 and a half blu-ray discs simultaneously if your files are encoded similar to my test file. So yes, once you are satisfied with the FCP edits, I would probably recommend you recompress your files to match your distribution/playback requirements/needs but keep the "master" file as an archive file for re-edits and/or re-compression as different situations may warrent in the future.

  • Music Video does not playback it looks like a white negative!!

Please please help...I have downloaded itunes7 and now I cant watch any of my new or old music video's...the music plays but the video looks like a white negative...you can make out the faint outline of people and things moving but nothing else??????????????
      Windows XP

I read a solution somewhere that worked for this music video problem, that was before i gave up on my music skipping and reverted back to i-Tunes 6 (so music no longer scratching but videos not working without delay/skipping.)
Anyway the solution was, Quit i-Tunes, select start menu -> control panels -> quick time. Click on advanced tab, uncheck box next to enable direct 3D video acceleraion and then open i-Tunes
    Hope that helps you

Those are not viruses. You have probably installed some malware:

An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
    See these Apple articles:

If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using Dr.Web Light from the App Store. It's free, and since it's from the App Store, it won't destabilize the system. If you prefer one of the better known commercial products, then Thomas recommends using Sophos.(Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.) If you already use Sophos, then be aware of this if you are using Mavericks: OS X Mavericks- Sophos Anti-Virus on-access scanner versions 8.0 - 9.1 may cause unexpected restarts
From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
    The facts are:
    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect anything targeting the Mac because there
is no Mac malware in the wild, and therefore, no "signatures" to detect.
    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
        protection against malware.
    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
    7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
    9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.

  • HT4259 I have been trying for hours to extend my Extreme Gen 5 network with an Express Gen 2.  But no matter what I do or try, it doesn't work.  What does happen is my internet gets block somehow when the Express looks like it's set up and 'green' - no in

I have been trying for hours to extend my Extreme Gen 5 network with an Express Gen 2.  But no matter what I do or try, it doesn't work.  What does happen is my internet gets blocked somehow when the Express is online and looks like it's set up perfect and 'green' - but no internet connection for anything even though the Extreme is green and the modem is good.  Once I disconnect the Express, everything is good again.
I've tried LAN, WAN, though a switch, direct connect, Extreme set to Extend the network, the Express set to be an extension.  Most of the time I get an error trying to update the Express.  But when it seems to be set up perfect, the entire house can't get to the internet.  Just when it looks right, it is so wrong.
If anyone can give me exact steps (e.g., "...from the Base Station menu, select the Restore Default Setting option" vice "...just restore the defaults..."), I would greatly appreciate it.  I'm left to the conclusion that the Express is faulty.  I've been using Airport Utility 6.2 from Mountain Lion on one computer and Airport Utility 5.6.1 from Snow Leopard on another computer (the latter give more control while the former just want you to 'forget' the Express).

I finally got it working.  I was trying to set it up ethernet.  My biggest mistake was when the new Express came on, I did not select 'Continue' - I went straight to manual thinking that I would get the most setup options in manual mode.  So everything I initially tried always resulted in 'wireless'.  Even when I would update or restore default settings, the Express would not completely restart. Or sometimes I would get an error. So most of the time I had to unplug it.  So when it came back up, none of my changes were retained. But there were a lot of times when everything was green and appeared to be fine. But anytime the ethernet cable was plugged in, no more internet.
So here's the weird part.  When I finally tried 'continue' (vice manual), I would get 4 options.  One would be 'ethernet' extended.  So I would select it, it gave me green lights, all looked good, and still the same problem.  This is when I got frustrated.  I thought I had exhausted all possible combinations.
But somehow when trying continue again after another restore, I only got 3 options.  One was the same ethernet extended option (can't remember what the missing 4th one was).  And this time it worked - it gave me the big green circle with the checkmark saying it was successful.  I don't know what I did different, but I know now that it won't work if 4 options come up to choose from.  It will work if only 3 options come up.  And success if only verified by the big checkmark.  Had anyone anywhere said the checkmark declaring success is validation, then maybe I wouldn't have gone down so many rabbit holes thinking it should have been successful.
As for which Airport Utility I prefer, 6.2 looks nice, but it would just ignore the Express and would want me to 'forget' it and would not let me edit it.  Airport Utility 5.6.1 was the one that I ended up using the most and finally had success with.  It still strikes me as odd that there is no manually way to pick ethernet, it can only be choosen following a 'restore defaults', and only from the 3-option list (the 4-option list had the same ethernet choice, but it no worky).
Thanks for the response.  I really do appreciate it.
Aiport Extreme Gen5 - internet access and router
Airport Express Gen2 - connected via ethernet, extending my wireless
    - configured while connect directly to the Extreme, but now on a switch (16-port hub)
    Using Airport 5.6.1
    1) Restore Defaults from Base Station menu
    2) Following restart, Select Continue
    3) Of the 3 option presented, select 'ethernet.... extend network...'
      - if 4 options are present, may not work
    4) Wait for the green circle with the big white checkmark.
    5) Connected Express to the switch where a cable went to other end of house - works.
    Dead-zone went from 2mbps to 24mbps.
I probably spent 4 hours chasing my tail in anger.  The correct way took about 5 minutes total.
    Thanks again.

  • Hello, I need help with my macbook pro. It looks like I cannot install anything anymore. Everytime I try to install a new software, use the migration assistant or click the lock to make changes, it simply does not react.

Hello, I need help with my macbook pro.
It looks like I cannot install anything anymore. Everytime I try to install a new software, I simply get stuck during the installation type process. I put in my password, it does accept it, but it does not go any further.
I tried to reset the password, put no password, repair the permissions, the disk but nothing will do. I nearly got stuck with the log in screen but finally succeeded in disabling it.
So I thought I might try to create a new account but I cannot click the lock to make changes. It simply refuses to react.
I am now thinking about using the migration assistant to save all my settings, data and so fourth, but again I get stuck when I have to type in my password. It accepts it but nothing happens...
I guess it has something to do with the authorization process, but can't find anything on the internet about it... Can you help me out?
    I am running Lion 10.7.3.
    Regards,
    Nicolas.
(I apologize if any grammatical/structural mistakes were to be found, english is not my mother-tongue. )

You probably won't like this suggestion, but I suggest you reinstall Lion.
First, backup your system. Next, reboot your system, press/hold the COMMAND-R keys to boot into the Recovery HD. Select 'Reinstall Mac OS X'. If you purchased Lion as an upgrade to Snow Leopard, the reinstall process will install Lion 10.7.3. If your system came preinstalled with Lion, you might still get Lion 10.7.2. Both installs are a total install of the OS. None of your apps or data will be impacted. Just the OS.

Upgrade to Snow Leopard - it's compatible with the latest version of iTunes, and still supports PowerPC applications.
    $19.99 - http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Snow Leopard is required if you wanted to upgrade to Lion, anyway, which you may want to in the future if the latest version of iTunes no longer supports Snow Leopard.

My 20inch iMac's internal drive died and I'm trying to re-install Lion on an external drive. If I could get the Lion DMG file I think I'd be all set but am not sure how to do this. It doesn't look like the Lion Recovery feature is supported in my older iMac. And I have Leopard installed on the external drive but there's no AppStore to download the Lion DMG file.
    Any suggestions?

Without a bootable backup/clone or a Time Machine backup of your previous Snow Leopard installation or a saved copy of Lion's install app, you'll have to upgrade your Leopard volume to Snow Leopard (10.6.6+) so you can waste another hour or more DLing the Lion thing again.

Advance warning - Mail worked fine.
I had fits with the last link I posted. At first it worked fine, then all of a sudden, it quit working. I now have iCloud - iCal syncing, but iCal is read only. Not a real big deal since you can log onto iCloud using Safari and post a new event.
I finally gave up on Address Book because it kept creating multiple contacts, which if you tried to merge or delete the multiple contacts, the contacts were deleted. It also worked at first and then stopped working as it should.

  • Trying to install the Aim version of ichat on my new mac I only seem to be using the messages I want it to look like the old aim i used on my old mac

I used to run ichat though Aim, I just purchased a new mac mini and I am able to socialize then different wasy except Ichat through aim. It's very important that i use this because it's the only way to keep up with my professors, colleages and family members who all use ichat through aim

    Hi,
(Umm, I was only away a few days - Community Specialists are supposed to wait a week)
The Messages app is basically iChat with the iOS Messages app added on.
This adds the iMessages features.  (essentially Apple's Own Messaging service like AIM or MSN but more like a system without a Buddy list)
If you happened to have Migrated your User account from your old Computer you may find that the System Preferences > Mail, Contact and Calendars pane has picked up on both emails and Names and IDs used in iChat and they may be active for Messages.
On first run Messages will tend to ask for an Apple ID to be "registered" with the iMessages service.
Once you have done this it will open the Main Messages window (It has become a Tabbed Chat and Interface combined purpose window that is "always On" by default.
As Braden has said you can add a Screen Name or Jabber ID  or a Yahoo ID.
The Add Pane reduces the AIM Variants for MobileMe and @Mac.com to just AIM (add the Screen Name in Full) but retains the Google separation in Jabber.
The next issue is that by default Buddy Lists are not on Show.
Go to the Window Menu  and use the "Buddies" or "CMD + 1" keystrokes.
This then is a combined window (Of all the Buddy List accounts such as Bonjour if enabled, Jabber/Google/Facebook or Yahoo or AIM (valid) ones.
In the Preferences > General Section there is a line about "Gather All Accounts into one List"
Unticking this will separate out the Buddy lists you have.
    To be clear.
You will be asked for an Apple ID to "Register" for iMessages.
    Other Account have Buddy Lists
By Default these appear in one List but can be separated.
As you may know certain Apple IDs ending in @mac.com and those linked to iCloud using @me.com and @icloud.com ending are also Valid AIM Screen Names.
If you use your Apple ID as your AIM Name then you will have to enter it as the Apple ID for iMessages and then in the Add Pane as the AIM name.
Main Window  (Window Menu > Messages, CMD +0 )
Has an icon that looks like a square box and pencil.
This will add a "New Message" to the left.
The blue icon that appears top right can be used to select Contact (for iMessages) or Buddies.
Also Typing a Name in the "To" spot will bring up a list of Contacts and Buddies with indicators as to whether they are iMessages, AIM or Jabber or Yahoo potential connections.
Chats (Buddy lists) or Conversations (iMessages contacts) remain AIM to AIM, Jabber to Jabber or iMessages to iMessages.
If you have a Valid AIM Name you will have to add this to Messages to continue where you left off in iChat.

  • Idvd 09 - preview looks awsome, burned dvd looks like crap on a stick!

What is going on with idvd???
    1. I use a Panasonic HD digital camcorder that saves video in 1080p x 720p and looks spectacular veiwed directly from camcorder to TV.
    2. I import the video files into imovie 09 and quality still looks great. (I realize my monitor won't display video at it's highest resolution.)
    3. I edit the video and as the text and transitions are added the playback gets choppy and starts to freeze. -Whatever!
    4. I "share" the final vid to media browser.
    5. I create a DVD menu in iDVD 09 and import the video from the media/movies panel.
Preview looks great, runs fairly smooth. ok!
    6. I burn to a DVD-R using the Best Performance setting.
    7. I place the burned DVD into my dvd player and....
It now looks like I am projecting the video onto a brick wall with the focus out of adjustment. The video is not very smooth, with jittery motion! And the resolution mimics that of an old Sega Game Gear view screen! Text has video noise distortion all around it. Probably would look better on youtube! AND....If I select "Scene selection" option and choose a scene from the middle of the movie, it just plays from the start anyway!
So much for HD! So much for deadlines! Now I just want to know why I "upgraded" to iLife 09 and a new-found crappy quality!! "Hollywood style movies" - MY BUTT!!!!!
    Please help!!!!!!

    Hi Jerred,
Welcome to apple discussions. I have some bad news and some good news for you. I'll start with the bad news.
iDVD does Not support burning High Def DVD (even though iMovie will in fact edit HD). That's the bad news.
The good news is that there are third party options available to you at a relatively low cost (under $120).
    See here: http://www.roxio.com/
OK. I told you the bad news and the good news right? Well here's the frosting on the cake:
You DON'T need a BD burner if you're doing this on the cheap (like most of us). A standard DVD burner such as your Mac's superdrive will do fine.
    See here: http://www.macvideo.tv/dvd-authoring/features/index.cfm?articleId=112361
Btw, you do want to make certain your camcorder/ camera is listed below prior to proceeding with the above info:

Hope the above info helps but if not just come on back.
