Playback not working in preview

I recently migrated my old iMac to a new iMac 27. Everything works great except for Final Cut Pro X's playback in preview. When i load a clip into final cut, even clips that worked before i will try to preview the clip so i can select what part i want to use. I hit play it flashes the pause symbol and immediately goes back to play. i have changed the playback preferences and switched over to proxy media and regardless it still does not play. if i drag the file into timeline it plays fine. however, it is extremely annoying to have to edit within timeline when i should be able to just preview what sections i want.
any thoughts on why this could be happening?
Quicktime is up to date as far as i can tell.

Try Window>Revert to Original Layout.
Rest prefereences (this app will find the right files).

I am not sure why where the PDF was created would make a difference but couldnt help but notice that was the difference between the PDF files that work and the ones that give that message. I can view the PDFs on a windows computer just fine and never had issues untill adobe, it seems to have messed up PDFs on my Mac and I am so frustrated with them. I have searched my computer for any remaining adobe files, deleted them and restarted my computer but I am still getting this message.

Uninstall Adobe Reader's plug-in.
Remove the following two files from /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/:
AdobePDFViewer.plugin
AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin
Open Safari Preferences > Extensions. Do you see AdobePDFViewer? If yes. disable.
Log out/in and test.
Another option is to download and install this plugin. Schubert|it PDF Browser Plugin . PDF Browser Plugin 2 is free for not-for-profit activities if used at home or at educational institutions.

Preview Playback Not Working

I am using Adobe Premiere Elements 8, but I had the same problem with version 7.
I can get video, still image, and audio assets into the project. I can also move these assets into the timeline. I can even add a transition between clips.
I can move the time back and forth and see how the transition would look, but I can not play a preview of the movie.
I have tried to have just audio, just still images, just titles, but still have not been able to preview video in the project.
I have 3GB of ram and plenty of HD space. I believe the processor is 2.2 GHz.
Is there any sort of test that Premiere can run to inform me of problems with my setup, or something that would show me?
Has anyone else had this problem?

and worked thru the steps.
1.Make sure that the system meets the minimum requirements for Adobe Premiere Elements 8.
My system meets the requirements. I even downloaded a special tool to make sure my processor has SSE2 capability.
I have a 3 Ghz, 3 GB of RAm machine with 10 gig left for scratch space.
I thought my video card might be underpowered, so I bought a new one. The system came with integrated video. I just bought a 256 MB card. I tried the card with one monitor at first and now am running two displays at 1024 by 768.
2. Render all effects, transitions, and titles in the Timeline. I do this. I notice that when a put in new still images, the bar above them appears red at first and then will turn green. If it is not turning green, I hit return and then see it turn green.
It is interesting that I can scroll thru the timeline and see my pictures and videos and titles. I can also create a avi file and see everything just fine.
3. Switch the GPU playback option. - Tried this both ways. No difference.
4. Disable video overlay in Adobe Premiere Elements. - I don't have an external monitor to view projects, so I do not think this applies. However, I tried it both ways without success.
5. Disconnect all peripheral devices except the digital video device. Did this, no difference.
6. Optimize the project settings. - Well, I didn't check this out, but I have the problem even if I just put in a short title and 5 pictures.
7. Test digital video playback in a third-party digital video utility. Did not do this. I have the problem without any video in it.
8. Update the video card driver. I installed this fresh from the manufacturer.
9. Check for device driver problems. Did not notice any.
10. Disable non-essential startup items and services. I did this. I have done this before, but I rechecked this.
11. Test playback on an external device. Can't do this on the machine where I am testing.
12. Test the hard disk performance. I will check this out soon. But I thought that this would work if I had done the rendering.
13. Optimize hard disks. - I have done this.
14. Create an AVI file of the Adobe Premiere Elements project before exporting it to a device. I have created an AVI and it works fine.

Video playback not working

Greetings:
I realize that this has been covered in past threads but I am not sure how to dig those up, so I figured I would just ask here. I loaded Premiere Pro CS4 on my brand new laptop Windows Vista 32bit and when I go through the Adobe Classroom in a Book lessons the video playback is not working, but I can hear the voices...not sure why. Also when the videos that are imported into the project I can see that there is proper video but when I try to play it back, I have no luck. Even the fast preview that you can use under the Project tab is not playing. Like I said, I can hear the sound of the video fine but as to the play back no video. I have checked and my Quicktime is the newest version and my Premiere Pro CS4 is completely updated to the latest version...any help here would be appreciated.

So I think I have resolved this...I went back and loaded an older driver and it all seemed to work fine. Sorry to post this.

AJA Kona LHe LHi Playback not working

I'm running two separate Mac Pros that also have Final Cut Pro 7 using a AJA Kona LHe and LHi. Both share the same issues when previewing with a broadcast monitor.FCP works perfect with the Kona cards.
The video signal seems to drop out during playback and audio drops out as well.
I have the newest drivers for Kona 9.0.3 and using the 8,5 aja adobe plugin for CS5. I didn't want to install the the AJA Adobe CS5.5 plugins in fear of messing things up.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled both the control panel and the plugins with no luck, The editor seems to be fine its mainly the playback in the monitor that's not working right.
Is this a CS5 thing? Will CS5.5 version fix the issues with Kona cards? I'm seriously thinking about moving over to Preimiere but need to know if thgis setup will work.

Kind of similar. The audio issue is like that. Drops out until I stop playback then restart playback. AJA said to not use kona card but uot put setting instead. That helps but didn't fix it 100% Video playback drops out completely for me with the HDMI out of the LHi. The component out from the LHe works better.
My playback in the program looks good my issue is with external the external monitor playback.

Nice video sample. Thats a good way to show your issue. I should do the same thing.

Forms built in Acrobat not working in Preview!?

I've built a form in Acrobat Professional (with text fields and radio buttons) that we want to fill out with Preview. The idea is to open the pdf with Preview, fill it out and in the Print dialogue, to "mail as pdf". Then if you close the original pdf without saving changes. it remains a template you can re-use anytime you wish.
This would all work fine except some of the text fields seem to radomly decide not to work when the pdf is opened with Preview. I've tried going back in Acrobat to delete the field and re-create another - that didn't work - same issue. I tried deleting the field, then copy and paste a field that does work in its place. Not only does that not work, it renders BOTH fields unusable!
Any ideas?

If the field works in Acrobat Reader but not Preview, then it's probably Preview's problem. Preview supports a subset of PDF features and an older version than the Adobe apps. From other similar questions seen in the forums, the best solution is to distribute a current, free Adobe Reader to everyone who needs to fill out the form.
Either that or get Apple to keep Preview reasonably full-featured and up-to-date, because today it is neither, and Adobe Reader 8 is nearly as fast or faster than Preview.

Links phone not working in preview but show on phone.

Some of my links between pages on phone do not work, but do work on phone itself. Also text frame show same on design page and phone page, but differently in preview.

Shape button not working in preview made

I am working on captivate 8 responsive project. I have created button using shape.
But when I publish for preview mode in Mozilla latest browser and found that all slide content disappear.
Also checked with sample responsive project in captivate 8. I found same issue.
Please help me in it.

Smart Shape buttons do not work in Firefox i'm afraid, it will leave the whole slide blank. We've had a good look at trying to find a fix/hack but unfortunately it looks like something Adobe and/or Mozilla need to sort out.

BOLD not working in preview and final product...

I saw a similar topic but their solution did not work. When I have BOLD text in the Body Pages it appears as BOLD. When I print from this it comes out BOLD. When I look at the PDF Preview or save the file, the BOLD goes away.
A prior thread said to remove the BOLD and then BOLD it again. That did not work.
I just purchased and installed 7.0 (yesterday). Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Mercury Playback not working

I just re-installed Win7-64 and all my software, including Master collection CS5. I started a new project in PPro CS5 and noticed that video rendering is set for "Mercury Playback Engine Software Only" and is greyed out, so I cannot change it. I have a GTX 470 and it was working just fine before I re-installed windows. I did add the drivers for the vid card just like I did before. Is there something I set incorrectly when I re-installed CS5?

Make sure you have the very latest Nvidia driver. The GTX470 was added to the support list a while back. Maybe you were using an older driver with the hack before you did the re-install?
Also check to make sure that the driver install was good by checking the driver version in the Nvidia control panel. If its using the default windows driver it will not work. I had this problem and had to re-install the Nvidia driver for it to work

'show icon preview' not working, Icon preview no longer visible

I have lots of folders full of jpg files. The preview icon do longer appears and all i get is the genetic icon. This happened randomly yesterday and I don't know how to fix it. I have the 'Show Icon Preview' enabled yet I only get the generic icon. Any ideas why? (OS X 10.5.8). I have tried a restart, permissions fix, and reindexed my hard drive with spotlight. No luck. Please help!

There probably are some hidden probable causes for this behavior;
while not knowing if you perform any general maintenance in a
preventative way for your OS X system, some of the suggestions
I could provide here may mean little or nothing to some users, or
to others, who have done them for years as a matter of course, to
suggest those could be the same as an insult; or a laughing matter.
You could try rather basic things, a few steps above 'repair disk
permissions' in Disk Utility. That's been around since OS 10.1.5.
And it has a place among other steps one can do to help out.
Sometimes, you can start up into SafeBoot mode; then choose to
run Disk Utility, and repair disk permissions. When done, quit D.U.
and restart the computer normally. - Other repairs to the system may
be performed by booting up from the OS X installer and run Disk
Utility from the menu drop-down options in the main Installer window.
You can repair disk, verify disk (SMART verify), repair disk permissions
and verify disk permissions. Plus other aspects of Disk utility that are
tools to set up partitions and other things beyond a basic simple fix.
SafeBoot mode, basic:
+Hold the Shift key down on start-up, keep holding it until you get a login+
+screen, enter admin password, then when desktop appears, you can+
+use GO in menu bar to find Utilities folder, and run Disk Utility's repair+
+disk permissions. When done, quit the Utility and restart.+
There probably may be some .plist file controlling the view of image icons
and since I haven't followed that issue (experienced it in the past, forgot
what I did to fix it) I am not sure what preference file to suggest trashing.
But you can be very selective, when knowledgeable, and do that. Then,
later on, when you restart the computer the default setting would return.
You could set that to whatever (if not the default) & that may fix the matter.
{One preference file location that probably would contain your user account's
.plists would be in the Macintosh HD> User folder> Library> Preferences>
...Now, the correct one among these becomes important. There is a desktop
plist, a finder plist, and others. Since each user in a Mac with their own setup
account can change these, yours should be in your booted user account.
However, some time has passed since this kind of issue occurred and I didn't
need to delete a .plist to resolve it. Yet that may be a short fix.}
These issues usually have a cause; sometimes it may be due to other items
not quite right in the user interface and symptoms of that sometimes show up
in odd places and they may not be directly related. Subtle and dismissed, a
few of those quirks are not show stoppers in OS X. A 'safeboot' & disk utility
may resolve some; to find a correct .plist preference file & trash it may, too.
If the computer's hard disk drive is getting full of content you have added, it
may be time to archive image libraries and/or music libraries off the Mac's
internal hard disk drive and then thin out content on the computer. That can
help a computer run better. Damage to data on the computer drive may be
a result (or outright is) of over-filling the hard disk drive. Overwriting content
is sometimes an issue; it could be subtle, too, for awhile. Checked into it?
For some preventative maintenance chores, I have and use OnyX which is
a free running utility tool (which I refer to as a utility interface tool) that pulls
the strings in OS X that some users would not think of the Terminal utility
ways of making them work; this gives you a GUI format, an application to
run various sets of items rather easily. If done without concern, these tools
can do bad things (same as booted Disk Utility, drastic tools are onboard.)
OnyX is a free-running downloadable app from Titanium Software; and since
I only use it maybe once every several months (or sooner if bored or if active
in using one computer more than usual) & have it run in Automation selection
having chosen all the check-box choices, so it will do those. I also have OnyX
set in its preferences, to restart the computer after it is done running those.
This may do more than you need in this selection of Automation. I have never
had any issues with this; but some preference choices system-wide may need
to be set back to your choice, as it can be also set to wipe caches or other old
logs and misc stuff. A few settings won't make much different to default from.
Usually, I prefer not to shut off or restart my computer until such time as when
Activity Monitor shows some issue with virtual memory and swap files or space
on the hard drive being excessively allocated as Virtual Memory. At times, a
restart may be required. My Mac can run a few months without restart, but it is
left to sleep or I will put it to sleep. Even so, some basic background OS X items
may not automatically run as they should. You can force the maintenance cycles.
If the 'show icon preview' does not work even after performing catch-up maintenace
and including OnyX, SafeBoot, and others; and if you have at least 30% of the total
hard disk drive capacity open or free from use, then you may have to consider a few
other ideas. (Removing the plist file may be the only thing you'd need do.) Another
idea in a few cases of more severe odd behavior, and if you updated your Leopard
10.5 to your current/last level through use of the Delta or small update file, would be
to get the larger Combo (last version) and after repairing disk permissions, install it
over the similar system in your computer. 10.5.8 over 10.5.8. Then restart and go in
and repair disk permissions again. Perhaps later on, safeboot and do them.
That much effort is seldom needed. Preventative maintenance and care to not over-
fill the hard disk drive, helps to almost never see such a problem in your Mac OS X.
{In a few cases, people who have upgraded from an earlier OS X version (Tiger-to-
Leopard, for example) and had a problem, may still have a similar problem later. So
it is best to fix issues and not hope to upgrade over them. Unless it is a totally new
bare-bones secure zero-overwritten drive, correct partition map, reformat, new install.
Then, there should be no doubt if there was an odd problem in the software, only.}
Hopefully some of this late night rambling may be of some help.

All tracks for me but for the sake of report I just listened to September – La La La (Never Give It Up) - Radio Version and went to Maddie Wilson – Just a Boy and no crossfade or gapless playback.
The reported workaround does not work for me.
A "workaround" that works for me is disabling and re-enabling Gapless playback & Crossfade tracks maybe 10 times, note that Gapless playback & Crossfade tracks will stop working again after restarting Spotify (it's possible it might stop working after a while without a restart too, haven't really checked that)
As you might have noticed I'm using 0.9.8 however something that is worth noting is that I did not recieve this update through Spotify, I got it from another person (files signed by Spotify so I trust it) and I extracted the contents to \%appdata%\Roaming\Spotify\
Another thing worth noting is that the reason I did the "forced update" was because of this issue, so I had this same issue in 0.9.7 too, tried a clean re-install but that changed nothing.
(I also noticed that I can't change the settings in 0.9.8, they simply don't stick.. I don't know why, but that prohibits me from trying different configurations. I was going to try if "Enable hardware acceleration" affected the crossfade issue but now I can't, anyone that knows which file the "Enable hardware acceleration" option is stored in? Can't find it in perfs file)
This issue is extremely annoying for someone like me (read: someone who is easily annoyed by things that don't work and I can't seem to fix myself (read: I want to take a knife and stab my ears everytime a track changes...)) Is it possible to revert to like 0.9.6 or something like that without having Spotify auto-updating? I can't find any options for auto-updating?
Edit: Found a download for 0.9.6.81 will try that and report back the results.
Edit 2: Installed Spotify 0.9.6.81 and set up my preferences, deleted the update files that spotify made (also blocked spotify.exe and spotifyhelper.exe from creating those files again through my security suit) and the results are: Gapless playback & Crossfade tracks is working, even after restart, will monitor this thread to see when Spotify fixes this so that I know when I can update again.

.mv4 iPhone playback not working

An interesting problem that I haven't been able to reconcile through my hosting company so I thought I would post here. I exported a video clip using QT Pro, export for web and uploaded the entire directory and tested for playback on my iPhone:

Then I proceeded to upload the same directory to another site to test for playback:

So then I proceed to see if the individual files are even playing back on the server that wasn't loading the video on my iPhone:

This leads me to believe it is an html/scripting error of some kind? But this is the exact same html file generated from QT that has been uploaded to both servers. Why would it work on one server and not on another? Is there possibly some issues with the server not being able to interpret the reference file correctly? Or is there something else I am missing? I have tried configuring MIME types using a .htaccess file, but I am not sure if this is even the issue as I am able to play back the video fine when hit directly.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Seems like Apple set a limit on how much space needs to be available in order to play back quicktime vids from the web. Makes sense. So if you cant play back certain videos that you know you should be able to play back, check your available free space.

"move to trash" not working in preview

Since I move to OS Lion, the option "move to trash" no longer works in Preview when viewing a .pdf file. I have administrator privileges and the files are not "locked". Is this a bug? Can you help me.

For me an easy solution worked fine, and inmediately
Check your permisions are correct on your user files.
Navigate to your main hard drive (usually Macintosh HD) and select your /Users folder.
Press “Cmd+I” to bring up the Get Info window.
Expand the “Sharing and Permissions” arrow.
Next to your username you should see “Read & Write”.
Click the small Gear icon and then click “Apply to enclosed items…”

On that site is also another solution with terminal, also working for many. Seems you lost rights over your trash, and diskutility couldnt fix it, this helps.

Zoom-to-fit Not Working in Preview, & other features, too.

I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard, and have since found that Preview is not working properly. This is something I use almost every day, & it not working has created a real disruption to my work-flow. I've noticed that others have complained about this, and have been doing so since at least October of 2009! Apple has obviously not addressed this, as I've done all the updates, and still it doesn't work. The Zoom-to-fit won't work, altho it sometimes will when there's only a little bit of space left, & sometimes when the image is too big, it may reduce. However, the "automatically resize" doesn't work either, and some other features work erratically as well. Sometimes when I change the resolution of the picture, it will zoom to fit, & sometimes well, so many things don't work, or do, but so rarely, I can't even remember all the instances.
Does anyone actually have some kind of work around, or solution? I've done the trash all the preferences, etc., which didn't do anything, and am stumped at this point, thanks...

Surely you understand that you are not talking to Apple here, just other users like yourself. Whether Apple knows about it depends on whether you or someone else has used the bugreporter or feedback channel to tell them. Yes, I do understand that, and my question was in response to being told that
"Preview in SL is broken", by one of the "experts" when I posted my own thread about it not working properly. To me, that response implied this was a known condition, & that this person knew that Apple knows, & since this was all he said, w/no other advice, it further implied that a fix would come out whenever it will, and there's no use in pursuing it further. So, my question was to anyone else to affirm or deny that is or isn't the case.
Plus, I've read that in fact, some employees of Apple do contribute to the discussions (as they surely should, if for no other reason, that what I just spoke of, to let us know when an issue is a known one, thus nothing else can be done until Apple releases a fix; thus preventing users from wasting time &/or screwing something up worse, attempting to fix it)
Does Adobe Reader provide a possible replacement for Preview for your purposes?
Don't know, I'd rather not have to open it for all the times I would simply use Preview, why have it as part of the OS if it doesn't work? I'd think Apple would fix it, or not show features it can't do. That said, your question is actually the first response I've seen yet, that at least is a possible work around, thank you.

How a thread is marked is totally up to the person who started it. If you have a problem with how it was done, you need to take it up with that person I think.
I will, but it's not the person who closed the thread, as that was done nearly two months after it was marked "Solved". And yes, it could have been archived due to no further comments, although we've no way of knowing, since there's no date of archiving shown. And that is what I'm wondering, did Apple just close it, to avoid the topic being taken to the top of the list? If this feature is broken, why haven't they fixed it, now nearly a year later???
And I have personally reported this in several feedback forms. I refuse to sign up for the developers group, just to file a bug report, since I would have to answer all the questions in the application form without knowing what the heck I was talking about, since I am hardly a developer/programmer, techno-geek, etc., and shouldn't have to jump through all those hoops, just to report to Apple that something's screwed up! I can send bug reports via Safari w/o signing up as an advanced computer engineer, why should I have to for reporting the same with Preview? If Apple chooses to ignore feedback reports, as well as their discussion boards, then what real customer service would that be?
