Playback of DVD Studio Pro 4 built SD video file - Menu 1 screen is WHITE!!

I recently upgraded from FCP 4.5 with DVD Studio Pro 3 to FCS with DVD Studio 4. I have resolved a number of problems with the upgrade by reading "Apply Discussions", however, I need help with the following: When I import my mpeg2 and AC3 files into DVD SP4, I use the DVD SP4 palette to select an Apple Template for my MENU 1. (I like the "Theater Interior" menu template.) When I view the final product with the DVD SP4 simulator, everything is great including the colors in MENU 1. So, I build my program onto my desktop, the same way I did when I had DVD SP3. Now, the problem begins. When I view the built video TS file on my G5 Apple DVD player, or format it to a standard DVD-R with my pioneer 106D burner and play it back on my in-house DVD player, when the program MENU 1 is displayed on the monitor, it is WHITE in color. The menu is set to times out in 20 seconds. Once that happens, the programs runs perfectly. However, what's with the white menu screen? I can barely make out the buttons. When I click on a button, it operates and the color and program work perfectly from that point. I there an option to get rid of the white screen when the menu comes up? Somehow, when DVD SP4 builds the video file, MENU 1 is encoding with a white background rather than with the colors of the Apple template in use. This did not happen with DVD SP3. Can you help me?
Ugene

try switching the menu encoding from software to hardware (or vice versa) in your DVDSP preferences and see if that makes a difference for you.

  • Dvd Studio Pro crashes whenever usuing a menu using motion video

Im using DVD Studio Pro 2 on a G5. Whenever I try to burn using either a menu template containing video or use a drop zone containing video, the software crashes.
I always use m2V video and ac3 audio created in FC4. Have tried usuing an existing file asset as my target with duration time set as well as separate imported files as the target. All imported assets are in the same folder
On burn, when it gets to the menu containing the video it crashes. If I remove the video from the menu its a smooth burn.
    Any suggestions wouldbe greatly appreciated.

The same problem as Chad's happens to me when running the Chapter 6 tutorial in the Apple Pro Training Series (APTS) book for Motion 3: if you try to set the imported Motion project as a DVDSP background, DVDSP will crash every time.
Max Average's advice is 100% good with the downside being that you lose your ability to roundtrip. If you export your Motion DVD menu project as a standalone QT movie, it will drop in fine and still retains the loop point (a marker preset within Motion). Exporting with the Lossless+Alpha codec gave me the best image in the DVDSP simulator (over Animation+Alpha, Uncompressed 10-bit, and ProRes HQ).
I find roundtripping between FCS2 apps is a hit and miss affair and, generally, just export everything.

  • DVD Studio Pro - Problem with video size

    Hello all,
I'm having a problem with dvd studio pro.
I have a project that I edited in FCP, then compressed to the default DVD setting in compresser, then imported the video as an asset in DVD studio pro. I'm trying to create a SD dvd, and whenever I simulate the dvd, the video plays with some of the left side cropped out. I have text that is cut off because of it. This has never happened before, and I have checked again and again to make sure its all set on SD. I'm pretty new to fcp studio, i'm teaching myself as I go and this is driving me crazy. I have made a bunch of dvd's prior, and this has never happened, so I have no idea what I did to mess things up.
For all I know, the problem may not even have to do with dvd studio, it may be in compresser. I have also played around with that, to no avail.
    Thanks for the help!
    Thomas

    Thanks Javabob,
That is a way good idea. While trying your suggestion i stumbled upon the problem, I have no idea why i never noticed this before. When i got to the step of importing it as an asset into dvd studio, i clicked on the video track and the inspector box for it showed up, then i noticed it had a display mode drop down menu set on '16:9' pan-scan. I then changed it to 16:9 letter-box and the simulation video fits correctly onto the screen. I don't really understand the reason why pan-scan blew it up like that, but it is fixed now. I still don't recall ever having to do this before, but oh well. I will pay attention to the inspector window for the videos more carefully from now on.
    Thanks for the help Javabob!

  • Burn in DVD Studio Pro only says Video Bitrate too high

My camera is a Sony Ex1 and I have a 1 hour and 7 minute video that I have sent through Compressor to DVD Studio Pro, which I have done many times before upgrading to FCP 7, and now when I try to build it, it always tells be that the video bitrate is to high. I have gone though preferences and reduced the bitrate to 3 and max 5 and it still does it. I have also made a Quicktime movie and tried to build and burn it in DVD Studio Pro and that does not work either. I have no problem viewing it in DVD Studio Pro when I simulate it.
I would appreciate any help you guy could give me. This is just a hobby, but I have been doing it for over 5 years and have never had this problem.

When I got DVD Pro 7, I installed 10.6 on a new 1 Tb hard drive and then installed DVD Pro 7, so it was installed on a completely new drive. When I ran my movie through Compressor, I did it two times. One with the DVD 90 Best, one with a suggestion by the new book on Studio Pro 4 (average 4.5 Mbps, Max 7.5 Mbps. I also made a Quicktime Movie. I did have to try several times to get it through Compressor, after hours FCP would quit before it was finished, but I did get it to work
It could be spiking with the 7.5, doubtful, but could be even with AC3 audio.
Try this to see if it works - Export the Final Cut movie as self contained movie (is that what the QuickTime Movie was, the entire timeline self contained?) Sorry I am a bit unclear as to whether you got that to go through Compressor or was it the timeline from FCP, which quit, but successfully went through Compressor. Perhaps it is related to Snow Leopard.
When you look at the build files on your hard drive, is it crashing out at the same point?
Take a look here http://dvdstepbystep.com/vts.php at the image at the bottom, does the build get to the same spot and/or does it throw the error in the log at the same part? Anything else in the log?
Anyway, there would be a few things to try.
I would think the easiest is to
1.) Export a small section of the movie from Final Cut as a self contained movie.
2.) Bring that movie into Compressor and run Compressor on it (including AC3 files) then bring that into DVD SP to see if it builds.
If it does, it would seem to be that there may be a spike causing the error (are you using multiple video streams, subtitles or anything else or is is a straight one video/one audio on the track.)
If that works it would seem to be a spike issue, especially if the error is thrown at the some spot in the building process.
If it gets past that, export the entire timeline and run it through Compressor and see if that works, dial down the top bitrate a bit for the video.
You could also do some other things (make another partition for an install of Leopard, not Snow Leopard, try a new user, etc.) but the above may be the easiest to start with.
When you say it takes hours to send from Final Cut, is that sending from Final Cut to Compressor or Final Cut to a self contained movie? Of course alot of this depends on your Final Cut timeline, codecs, color corrections, renders and the rest, but on a Octo it should not be painfully long for a 1 hour few minutes movie. I ave Final Cut 7 on a laptop and it does a pretty good job speedwise on some HDV timelines, which are a pain to send out. You may want to check things like where you set your scratch disks, when you are putting the media etc. (More as an aside FYI)

  • How to export subtitles create in DVD Studio Pro into a Quicktime file?

    Hi,
My film was edited in Final Cut, then exported to DVD Studio Pro to make dvds. Subtitles were added in DVD Studio Pro.
I need now to make a Quicktime file of the film for web streaming and the file still needs to include the subtitles (or the option to make them appear)
but how can I export the subtitles (dvd studio pro type of files) to my Quicktime file, for streaming?
I read that this is possible but how?
    Please help!!
    Thanks!
    Paula

A DVD uses VOBSUB aka. idx/sub format subtitles which are bitmap images. QuickTime itself does not support this format but Perian can sort of allow them to work. However firstly Perian is Mac only, and secondly I would not expect this work in a web-browser. In fact I don't think there is anyway to control subtitles in a web-browser.
If you have the subtitles in a text format, preferably .SRT format, then you may have more options but again I would think you would still have problem in a web-browser.
In general terms, the best utility for adding text subtitles to a QuickTime compatible file is iSubtitle details are available here http://www.bitfield.se/isubtitle/index.html
What would be possible would be to 'burn' permenantly the image of the subtitles in to the video. This means they would always be visisble even in a web-browser but could not be turned off. You would also be limited to a single language. There are several tools that could do this including Handbrake (to convert directly from the DVD), and SubMerge also from Bitfield.
There are some tools for Windows that use OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to convert the bitmap subtitles in to text ones.

  • DVD Studio Pro 4 - dragging template to menu locks up the software

When I drag one of the templates to the menu window, DVD Studio Pro locks up.
The template displays in the menu window, but the Applying Template window stays on with the horizontal barber pole running.
The only recourse is to force a quit.
    Any advice will be appreciated.
    Thanks------Roger from Louisville

After further investigation, it appears that I'm unable to create any shape on the menus (i.e. button shapes). Drag and drop of any pre-existing shape from the right-hand box has no effect at all.
Could this have anything to do with file system permissions?

  • I have a typical 720x480 sequence in final cut that i've exported as a quicktime movie.  I put it in DVD studio pro 4, made a simple menu, but it never burns correctly.  How do I burn a simple one video DVD that actually has reasonable quality?

I don't understand why burning DVDs has so many problems.

There are a number of tutorials that might help you.
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/first_play_warmouth.html
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/basic_build_dvd_in_dvd_sp.html
DVD SP gives you a lot of control over the DVD authoring process. But with that, you also have the ability to make a lot of bad discs. iDVD will lead you down a narrow path. It will always make a disc that plays, but you have very little control or customization. If all you want to do is make a simple DVD that plays, then you might be better off with iDVD.

  • DVD Studio Pro 4 Looping Video/Audio Track to Continuously Replay?

Do I need to script to continuously replay video audio track?
Is there a template already written for a script?
    Thanks much,
    Chuck

Hi - welcome to the discussions.
You don't need to script it if all you want to do is repeat the track over and over. All you do is set the end jump of the track to go to the same track.
However, if you want to repeat just a short audio clip over and over whilst a longer video plays then what you do is add the audio repeatedly to the track until you get to the end of the video. You can't set the audio up differently to the video, you have to play both at the same time.

  • Please help! dvd studio pro 3/ m2v issues

    hi,
i have been attempting to burn a simple dvd for 9 hours now. i'm using dvd studio pro 3 on a macbook pro (OS X Tiger); the video assets comprising my dvd studio pro project are mpeg2 files. everything looks beautiful when i simulate the menu within studio pro. then when i build/format, the formatting fails every single time and gives me NO error code, nothing to go on - all it says is "formatting failed".
studio pro 3 can import and play the mpeg2 files, but not build/format the project with them - i'm wondering if this is an obvious compatibility thing with macbook pro. i know macbook pro can't read mpeg2 files on its own (much to my chagrin - a major flaw in my humble opinion but that's a different story) - like, if i were to try to play the file in the quicktime player. but, should i be having this problem when working with the mpeg2 files strictly within the software? final cut pro exported the files just fine, dvd studio pro accepted and can play them - is the dvd drive on a macbook pro unable to write a project with original assets in mpeg2 format even IF, theoretically, these should be encoded by the software prior to burning the dvd?
this is really time urgent as well, so any help would be much appreciated... thanks!

ah, thank you, the mystery about the studio pro 3 is somewhat solved. i've been having problems with it ever since i transitioned to the intel, but strangely it has worked about half the time so i didn't think it was unsupported altogether.
Nope officially unsupported and not to be used on Intel Machines (though of course once in awhile it will work properly, which is almost worse than never working )
i have tried building first then formatting; i have tried everything - formatting first, building/formatting, building first, etc. i have tried 2 different brands of media dvd-r. as for DL with proper layer break, i was reading a bit about that in another thread but i'm not sure what it pertains to exactly... nothing i've done is very complex and it's all been very DIY learn-as-i-go. so... not sure if i'm missing something there.
    thanks
Can you build the DVD? Or will it not even build? (Since it is not a DL do not worry about the layer break, sometimes if making DL DVD and there is no break found it can stall things out)

  • Best setting on DVD studio pro for PNG vid from final cut w/1280x720 res

Okay, so I am trying to find the way to make my video look best on a 720p tv set. The video is for kiosk use, so will only show on this one tv over and over. I want the text to look super crisp and sharp, so I have exported the video from final cut studio as a png with 1280 x 720 HD resolution. When I import it as an asset on DVD studio pro I notice that the resolution in the track menu is showing as 720x480i. What's the best way for me to setup DVD studio pro, so my video retains as much clarity and sharpness as possible? Is there no way to make it super sharp on an SD DVD? I set the encoding to Two pass VBR and the bit rate to 6.8 and max bit rate to 8.0, motion estimation to best... any tips would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

I want the text to look super crisp and sharp
then use a computer and presentation software, Powerpoint, Keynote Open Office Impress which is FREE
1280 x 1024 rez is a basic standard these days
    http://www.apple.com/iwork/keynote/
    http://www.openoffice.org/product/impress.html
I have exported the video from final cut studio as a png with 1280 x 720 HD resolution.
this is waste of time, your next step is compressing this image down to something like a tenth of its original size with much lower rez to an MPEG2
if you want acceptable results at video rez 720x576 PAL then use DVDSP
but you have to accept that creating a DVD severely compresses the video to MPEG2, which is fine for moving video but isnt the sharpest compared to computer rez.

  • Importing 1080/24p sequence into DVD Studio Pro 4

Perhaps the answer here is as simple as "DVD Studio Pro doesn't do Blu-ray." In any event, I recently got a Sony HXR-NX5U, which, among its many functions, shoots 1080 at 24p, 30p and 60i. Following these instructions from Ken Stone (http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/burn_br_mac_superdrivestone.html), I was able to output a 1080/24p movie and burn it to the hybrid format he describes, which plays fine on my PlayStation 3.
However, when I try and bring the files that were created as a result of the "Share" command in FCP 7.0.3 (which are an ac3 file and an H.264 file), DVD Studio Pro will not recognize the H.264 video file and says that it is invalid. I'm assuming that the "Share" command creates these files via Compressor... if I'm wrong, please let me know.
However, if I just do a straight export of my 1080/24p timeline as a QuickTime movie, then DVD Studio Pro will accept the files, marking it with a "yellow" indictator, indicating that it needs to be processed.
What I'm wondering is... is there a way to export using Compressor so that DVD Studio Pro will accept the files? If I just do a straight export from the FCP timeline as a QuickTime movie and let DVD Studio Pro do the encoding, will it remain 24p?
Bear in mind I'm not trying to burn a blu-ray disc.
    Thank you!

    DVD SP does't do Blu-Ray.
If you have time to kill, do a search on the forum for hours of entertaining reading on this subject.
To create a DVD, use Compressor to generate the m2v and ac3 files needed by DVDSP to author a DVD.
Again, a search of this forum will turn up hundreds of threads - most of which are restating the process for authoring that is spelled out in the manual.

  • DVD Studio Pro 4 Encoding Preferences

    Hello,
I have 40GB of MOV files and they all have this specs:
    - 640x480
    - 4000kbps bitrate
Now, when I go to DVD Studio Pro -- Preferences -- Encoding -- SD DVD... I have the bit rate so, lets say for instance 4000kbps bit rate, I import a video file (AVI, MOV or others), DVD Studio Pro will convert that file to 4000kbps encoding on MPEG-2 (.m2v files), right? Now, what about if I change the bit rate to 2000kbps, now the file I just transfered to DVD Studio Pro becomes smaller, and the quality gets a bit lower, but it is ok, what I really need is to fit my home videos to at least 2-4 DVD, of not, that would be a shame if it didnt work as I wanted. So, 2000kbps, the quality is good, not bad... Now here is my question...
Can I change the bit rate to 1000kbps,, 1500, or even lower than that? How? Why cant DVD Studio Pro have this option of a bit rate lower than 2000kbps, how can I do it? Is there any trick, please advice, I am trying to do this encoding for a month and I really need to finish it for the next week and put it on my DVD Presentation.
Is there any plugins or that sort of things that can HAVE the option of lower than 2000kbps bit rate constant on DVSP4?
Thank you for reading this, any help would be really appreciated...
    iMac 20" - Intel Core Duo 2GHz, 512MB RAM, 128MB ATi Radeon X1600, 1TB of HDs   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hello,
As always, thank you for helping me out. The thing is, I already used compressor. For instance, I encoded a 14MB MOV file in compressor to MPEG-2 (M2V) and Dolby (AC3) and the file was about 8MB (M2V Video File + AC3 Audio File = about 8MB), in a bit rate of 2mbps, and the wuality was terrible! I oculd see the pixels everywhere, it had a terrible quality. So, when I imported the MOV file (14MB) to DVSP4 without using compressor, the size it took on the DVD Project was 8.8MB and the quality was the same as my MOV file, perfect quality, great, I loved it. And look at this, my DVSP4 preferences was set for 2000kbps bit rate encoding, and with a great quality. That is why I wanted sooo much to find a way to encode my videos to DVSP4 in a lower bit rate, so I could put all of my 40GB of Home videos in about 2-4 DVDs... but now I will have to put it all in about 6-7...
Any advices? I dont want and I cant use Compressor because the quality DVD`is realllly poor. Ive searched everywhere for a encoder that can actually encode my videos to a MPEG-2 format (that means the format DVSP4 uses for DVD Video Encoding) but I simply cannot find one!! Ive tried to PCs and Macs... none of them has worked.
    Please help, thank you...

  • DVD Studio Pro translated subtitle files (Spanish) - which format?

I have an option to receive one of the following subtitle file formats from a subtitler/translator for DVD Studio Pro:
    - Spruce Text .stl file (text-based file, it will have font size information but you can edit if necessary; color is not specified – you can edit on your end)
    - .stl navigation file with TIFFs or BMP files – the .stl file will contain time code information for each of the TIFFS or BMP (bitmaps). You will not be able to edit the text, font, color, etc. since the TIFFS or BMP files are set graphic images.
    Which is the best path?
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Chris,
Both are good or bad - it depends on what you intend to do.
With the text files you're way more flexible, but the quality of the subtitles is a bit below rendered titles and some fonts do either not work with DVDSP or kerning is not that nice. Rendered titles text can't be changed easily except they are 'Layered TIFFs'.
I always would go the text route as it takes less space and is more flexible.
In any case you should have a good subtitle editor as a change of timing or text is no real fun within DVDSP.
I do have an app called TitleExchange which allows to use subtitles both with FCP and DVDSP and you can use FCP to make new timing, text changes, font changes, size changes and view that real time and then send it to DVDSP as an STL text file.
But there are other apps out there which can do something similar.
    Hope this helps

  • Corrupted Motion projects in DVD Studio Pro

    Hi.
I have just installed Final Cut Studio 2. I have opened a project I've been working on with previous version ( a DVD Studio Pro project with Motion files loaded ) and I have found that all my Motion projects appears with all the layers desplaced or just corrupted. Any solution to this? I still feel that Apple is treating us like "betatesters" instead of profesionals. Hope that some day I take something from them out of the box and it works as expected ( from the beggining, not many monthes later )...
    Hugs
    Antonio

    Antonio:
Exporting the Motion project as animation will be easier and without quality loss. You can use that moie in DVDSP or to Compressor to encode to mpeg-2.

  • Does DVD Studio Pro max out at 100 chapters?

I have been told that 100 chapters is the most you can have in a DVD Studio Pro project. Does anyone know if this is true? Thanks in advance for your input and your time.

If I'm adding a slideshow to my project and have 180 photos I assume I need to create 2 slideshows? Each photo is a chapter when you convert it to a track.
I'm new to DVD Studio Pro and none of my menu photos or slideshow photos appear in the Viewer. Why can't I see the photos? They appear in the Menu, Assets and Slideshow column but don't appear in the Viewer or Simulator. I'm obviously missing s step somewhere. I only do slideshows because I'm a still photographer. I'm moving from iMovieHD and iDVD to DVD Studio Pro 3. My photos are 300dpi and 3000x2400 which is not 4:3 ratio. I need to recrop for DVD.
Any suggestions (read the manual)? I did buy DVD Studio Pro - 101: Mastering DVD Studio Pro but it doesn't help with trouble shooting or setup. I apprecaite any help. -Roger
