Playback of PAL DVDs in the USA

Ok,
I want to get a series that is only available in the UK right now (Spooks Season 3 aka MI-5 here is the USA)
anywhoot
When I get the DVDs how should I go about this?
I remember there is a region setting in DVD player, I dont want to mess with that - but could someone tell me more about how that works, so I am thinking I will use Mac the Ripper to legally rip the DVDs and play them back in DVD player without a region code on them, or burn to DVD without a Region. All sounds good?
P.S. Anyone here live in UK? If you have the season 3, i am looking to buy

Most modern DVD players can correctly handle both
formats.
I've not seen a consumer DVD player that connects to a TV set play PAL here in the US. I HAVE seen stand-alone players with an attached LCD screen that will play both NTSC and PAL.
Edit: An Amazon.com search turned up two players that claim to play both in the US - the JVC XV-NP10S Multi Region Code Free DVD Player and the Philips 642/ 37 Region Free - Code free DIVX PAL NTSC DVD Player
That's not many choices.

I live in the US. There is a movie I would like to get but it is only offered in PAL format. Can the i-Mac play this back ? Some have referred to changing a region setting. How is this done ? My i-Mac has a superdrive.

  • How to make a NTSC DVD for the USA

I want to put some movies on a DVD for some relatives to play on their DVD player in USA which uses NTSC I believe.
How do I convert my PAL footage to play on their machine in iDVD6?

    Hi Alexander
Two ways. One bad and one very good.
    • Burn a NTSC-project in iDVD - BAD AND LOSY QUALITY
    • Open Your movie in JES_Deinterlacer - Google it - it's free and let it convert Your PAL (25fps) project
to NTSC (29.97fps) then start a new iDVD NTSC-project and drop this new converted movie into
    this.
This should be enough - BUT You can do more.
    • Now Save as a DiskImage to eg Desktop
    • Burn this by Apple Disk Util tool or Toast™ - AT AN AS SLOW speed as possible eg x1, x2 or x4
    • Burn it on high quality media: I use Verbatim DVDs
    • Use DVD-R (not +R or +/-RW)
Doing the last steps gives a DVD that has less writing errors = Can be played on more types of player
eg. stand alone DVD-player or PCs
Yours - HAVE TESTED THIS and got a very good result - confirmed from US: Bengt W

  • Can my iBook play PAL DVDs?

I've read the threads about how to convert, but what about just sticking the PAL DVD in and hitting play on the built in DVD player? Will it work? I want to get Irish sports (hurling, rugby, etc) DVD videos, but they are all PAL format!

You might try VLC for DVD playback. It ignores region codes and just plays the movie.

The 5 region changes is a DVD industry rule, separate from Apple.
The ATI Displays utility might be helpful in switching between NTSC and PAL DVDs. The latest version is here.

  • How to create a PAL DVD from a NTSC camera

    Hi,
I have a Canon HF10 which I have bought in the US, so it is a NTSC camera. I am living in Europe, so I would like to create a PAL dvd from the footage which I have recorded.
The footage have been shot using 1080/24p and I have imported it into iMovie. Do I need to do something extra or can I just export it and burn an dvd from iDVD?
    Best regards
    Henrik.

no surprise.. the ccd of you device is read-out 24p, but the camera records upsampled in 30i ..
24p on consumer devices is mostly marketing blabla..
in Europe, a 25p more is more interesting..
you have a NTSC device. full stop.
in iDVD, set prefs to 25fps (=PAL), relaunch iDVD, import iM project..
so, you record in 24p, got 30i on tape, anc convert again in 25i (=PAL) ... happy landing..
aside: better results in standards-conversion with free app JES Deinterlacer ...

  • Will PAL dvd player play my NTSC DVD-r?

I'm trying to figure out if I need to convert several NTSC dvd's into PAL format to send to a friend's mom in Israel (she's very sick and would like to see these soon).
Since I've never converted between these formats, I've been doing lots of research and keep getting more confused. I downloaded JES Deinterlacer (i think thats what its called) but I'm not sure I need it since I read the following on an imovie FAQ website:
"I have an NTSC project and want a PAL DVD.
The good news is: You can just send an NTSC disc. Any PAL set top DVD player capable of playing DVD-R discs can also play NTSC discs. All that is needed is a fairly new TV, built in the last 8-10 years or so."
Could this be true? Can I really just send the NTSC dvd's to her? I hate to waste time here...please help...
    Thanks so much in advance.
    Jenny

That´s right; NTSC DVDs will always work on PAL players when the player is compliant to the DVD specs. Those players do give out the regular NTSC signal and/or convert to PAL60. Some players can even convert to PAL50. The problem is the TV set.
My German TV is 14 years old and cannot handle PAL60 or NTSC; I would need one of those rare players that convert to PAL50 (usually with poor results).
But NTSC DVDs will always work on a PC (when it is an all-region DVD).

  • Importing PAL DVD to Edit and Export as NTSC DV

A producer in China has Betacam SP PAL material that I need for a DV NTSC Project. I am not confident that a standards conversion process in Beijing will yield acceptable quality. I'm thinking of asking him to make PAL DVDs of the footage to send to me. Does anyone have experience with importing PAL DVD into an NTSC project, to master as NTSC DV? Will the quality of the PAL DVD measure up to the NTSC DV? Thanks for any help or advice you can offer.

I'm still waiting to hear whether they would send the tapes. I suppose I could ask them to make a Beta SP PAL clone and send that to me. But we're getting into a lot more cost here -- a high quality dub on their end and a high-quality standards conversion here in the States. Since this project will result in a standard NTSC DVD, I'm hoping that maybe going the PAL DVD route would save a bunch of bucks and still be acceptable quality. If anyone has actual experience importing PAL DVD to Final Cut Pro, perhaps they could speak to that.

  • Very best 1080i60 to PAL DVD workflow, please?

    Hey guys,
I've been handed some footage shot in HDV1080i60 on a Z1. Trouble is that it was supposed to be shot in 1080i50, because we need to make a PAL DVD at the end of this..
So I'm wondering what, using the FCS2 suite is the best workflow.. I'm thinking of capturing 1080i60 and then converting that to PAL via Compressor using Optical flow..
I don't know if it is better to edit in 1080i60, then convert before going to DVD, or to convert before editing..
Any advice on what would be the ideal workflow would be gratefully appreciated..
    Pete

Hmm, yep of course converting the copius quantities of raw footage will take forever. Thanks for the advice on a editing codec..
I was gonna say that yeah while most PAL DVD players will play NTSC, that I cannot deliver on NTSC..
But now I'm thinking that provided it plays on their player they'd never know the difference. (Wedding video)
Maybe I'll send through a draft copy as NTSC & see if they grumble about playability. If not I'll deliver NTSC DVD..
    Thanks for the answer..

  • PAL DVD in NTSC Country

    Hi!
I am authoring a PAL DVD for the european market and now the label wants to release it in the US. Here in PAL country we can just put an NTSC DVD into our players and it will play on our PAL TVs as long as it's region-code free.
Does this work the other way round as well?
It would save me enormous ammounts of time transcoding all the PAL, if in the US PAL DVDs would just play like that.

Does this work the other way round as well?
Nop! Most DVD players in US will not read PAL DVDs. You must author a NTSC version. Sorry!
    Hope that helps !

  • Outputting NTSC Sequence  to PAL DVD at best quality

    Hello all,
I am filming in NTSC but want to be able to output my finished sequence to a PAL DVD at the best quality possible. can someone suggest the best practice for this please.  I use Premiere and Media Encoder for editing and outputting.   Thanks

The PAL DVD player can play both formats, PAL and NTSC. There is hardware in the player to convert NTSC to PAL, so the TV does not need to play both formats, PAL is enough.
Software conversion in PR or other program will always have a hard time to get close or even meet the quality of the hardware converter.

  • Capture in PAL but Export to DVD in NTSC for friends in the USA

I have a PAL JVC camera which captures well with my G4 and the FCE. Can export the finished project in the NTSC format for video players in the USA. Could that be done with Quicktime? My program is FCE.
    Thanks. Roger.

    Hello Roger,
for standard conversions I would suggest the following workflow:
    • edit your footage in FCE with PAL settings
    • export the finished video as self contained QT movie.
    • convert to DV/DVCPro NTSC with JES Deinterlacer (http://www.xs4all.nl/~jeschot/home.html)
    • author/encode your DVD
    hope this helps

  • Pal DVD's playback speed... changeable?

My DVD drive is now permanently set to region 2. I have some Pal DVD's and am planning to buy a lot more. I know of the whole 24 fps vs 25 fps thing and I know of the problems with NTSC to Pal conversion. I also know it is possible to tinker with certain drives' playback speed, to slow/speed up a DVD that was supposed to play 1 frame faster/slower.
    So... how to do it?

  • PAL DVD playback issues

    Hi all,
I have made a 16x9 PAL DVD. Pretty simple disc - two menus, and a 24 minute video clip with chapters referenced in stories.
The menus are pict files setup with overlays for the button highlights. They are set to 16x9:pan/scan.
The client reported that the DVD did not play in a PAL player and TV. Played OK in a computer. He described the problem that the menu would not let them select any buttons, and that the menu was cut off top and bottom.
Before I sent the DVD, it played fine in my macbook pro, and on a windows laptop. But I don't have a PAL DVD player and PAL TV to test that config.
I burned another DVD today and tried it in a different mac. I saw the menu cutoff issue, and it also appeared that the overlay did not line up correctly so the menu did not work. This was the first time I played the DVD in this mac. Once I reset the view to normal size, it displayed and played fine. I also tried it again at full screen, and that worked as well.
So it appears that it does work, but there is an issue on first play where the menu is not displayed correctly on initial load.
Anyone have any suggests on how to get the first play to work? I'm assuming this is also what's affecting the DVD player / TV combination.
Also - any suggestions on setting up an affordable way to test the PAL DVDs here in the states other than a computer playback?
    Thanks,
    Bill

    Hi

What size did you use to build your menu backgrounds and overlays?
Anyone have any suggests on how to get the first play to work?
It uses to be so simple as selecting what item do you want to run first in DVD Inspector in DVDSP. What element is your first play? The Menu? You cuold try building a very short track (3/5 secs), with just black image and use that as first play (or a simple slideshow with a single black image). I have heard around the forums about some issues with some specific players with a menu as first play.
    Hope that helps !

  • PAL / NTSC. Why can I Watch PAL DVD's in the US?

I know when I burn a disc in iDVD I have the option to burn in PAL or NTSC. I'm in The USA and often send

  • How do I burn a dvd using the PAL setting for Europe?

    This is an older answer:
Make a new project in PAL using custom settings. Copy and paste the contents from the NTSC project to the PAL project. Render everything.
Don't do this unless you really need to. If you're making a DVD for Europe you don't need to.
    And my question is:
Why is it not needed to change it to PAL if this DVD is for Europe?
Would it not be best to use a project with PAL SD 720x576 DV Anamorphic  25i  ?
What's the difference between .... x756 DV  and  ... DV Anamorphic
and also completely without this DV and DV Anamorphic?

You don't, unless you want to have PAL resolution. Would it not be best to use a project with PAL SD 720x576 DV Anamorphic  25i  ?
Yes, if you want a PAL resolution DVD. That's why the OP is asking how to make a PAL project. What's the difference between .... x756 DV  and  ... DV Anamorphic
DV is 4:3. DV Anamorphic is 16:9. and also completely without this DV and DV Anamorphic?
Not sure what this means. The DVD specification is the same as DV resolution. If the OP as an HD project that has a frame rate of 23.98, the output resolution will be NTSC DV anamorphic, because DVD only accepts 23.98, 24, or 29.97 frame rates in 720x480, not in the PAL resolution 720x576. That has to be in 25fps.

JUst to add the reason you don't need to make PAL for Europe is because all PAL DVDs can play back NTSC. Unfortunately almost no NTSC players can play back PAL.
