• Why is my new iPad mini with retina very, very jerky and slow?

Hi,
Does anyone know what I can do about my new iPad being very, very jerky and slow?
FACT - The multitouch screen is unresponsive and I have to press and press and press to select what I want before it reacts.
It's an iPad mini with retina, so it's got the new chipset which runs really, really fast.
FACT - What happens is:
I start up pages and it freezes completely for quite a while before allowing me access to my documents.
I go to settings and it freezes up totally for quite a while before allowing me access to my settings.
Is there a cure? I get similar problems on my acompanying really, really fast iPhone 5s.
PS
Plenty of memory left so no problems there - only about half used and they're both 32gb.
...and my beloved iPad2 never used to do this either.

If You Think iOS 7 Feels Slow Here’s How to Speed It Up
http://osxdaily.com/2013/09/23/ios-7-slow-speed-it-up/
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

• Preview loading is extremely slow in camera roll

Hi All,
I updated my ipad to 8.1. After that, preview loading is extremely slow in the camera roll. If I try to scroll between the photos in the camera roll, it took 4 to 5 seconds to move from one image to another image. This happens after the my ipad has been updated to 8.1
Is there any solution for this.

Hi erodevarun,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like the Photos app is running slowly. I would recommend that you read these articles, they may be helpful in troubleshooting your issue.

• Preview app is too slow to open PDF from Server Snow Leopard

Hi
After the Lion update into a MacBook Clients the app Preview has become too slow to open PDF files from Mac server OS Snow Leopard.
Preview app isn't not slow to open PDF present into local system hard disk.
Can you help me to solve this?

i've tested the network connection but it's works perfectly.
if i open network files with Office or other applications there aren't problems.
Only preview app is slow to open pdf's from server.

• Pre8 jerky playback in preview window AVCHD files

I am working on a project in Pre8 that uses AVCHD files from a Canon HD camcorder (*.mts files). I can add files to the timeline, but editing is very difficult because the playback is very jerky in the preview window.
I suspect it may be my machine, as it does not have a video card, but uses the Intel g33/g31 chipset. I have a few questions:
If I get a video card, will it help with the preview playback? Recommendations for a card that won't break the bank?
Would Pre9 be any better at handling these files? Is it a big upgrade from 8?
Thanks for your help!
Tim

Without throwing a ton of money at this situation, what are my best options if I want to edit the AVCHD files?
First will be to add an internal hard drive.
From there, will I see more benefit from adding a video card, or will upgrading to Pre9 be of more use to me? Does Pre9 natively support AVCHD editing? I am going to download the trial version to see what happens.
I am also looking into converting AVCHD files to a more easily edited file, but really don't want to add extra steps to my workflow if I can avoid it.

• Subtitle causes jerky playback in preview monitor

Well the subject says it all. The timeline plays fine in the monitor but when I add the subtitle the playback starts and stops and is very jerky. If I delete the subtitle then everything plays fine. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Paul

That seems like a pretty able system. Have you got plenty of drive space?
The real check is to burn a DVD and check your playback there. I reckon that will be fine.

• Playback of HD bmp sequences too slow on quad core i7

I have a fairly fast quad-core i7 Win 7 64bit machine with 12GB RAM and primarily use Premiere as an editor for our animated series. We render 1280x720 30 fps bmp sequences (not interlaced just progressive), which I then import along with the .WAV audio files. We need to line up sound FX and other editing considerations, but playback on the machine is way too jerky to properly time things.
I assumed this might be improved with PP 5.5 (I have been using PP 2.0 for ever, since it met my needs) but the trial does not reveal that to be the case. I can, of course, render out to uncompressed AVI sequences to then retime things and that's what I've been doing in PP 2.0, but if that's what I have to do there is little advantage in me upgrading to 5.5.
Is this just the way it is? I would have thought my machine specs to be adequate to this task, but perhaps not and I'll just have to live with the older program. Or is there something I should enable to make it work better (I've tried everything I can think of in the program but nothing seems to improve it -- quite frankly, the playback is just as slow as it is on my much older dual-core XP box, also running Premiere 2.0)

Thanks for the responses, guys.
The disc drives are all SATA AV drives with as high a throughput as is reasonably possible. I had not turned off indexing but I tried that on one drive and it didn't seem to help any (I really couldn't tell any differences).
Yes, of course I have an AV program running, as does anyone nowadays, but with 99.9% of the CPU cycles available I doubt whether it's slowing things down. When looking at all the cores in Process Explorer, for example, they are nearly as flatline as anything could be. But if you're suggesting I need to dump any AV as well as, say, even a browser window open to work in Premiere, I'd say it isn't worth it.
That leaves rendering the timeline which, of course, I can do even in 2.0. I assume the work files involved are at least smaller than rendering out the uncompressed AVIs so that is one advantage, although obviously render times are a PITA compared to timeline playback. But if that's state of the art nowadays (that is, if most *reasonable* modern systems aren't capable of handing this kind of playback) then so be it. There's not a real compelling reason for me to upgrade now, then, but that's okay as well.
And, again, I do appreciate the attempt to help (I just wish my system could do this. Sigh).

• Adding Transitions freezes and stutters playback in Preview.

I'm posting this as a new issue. Since I've narrowed down my "stuttering/freezing on playback" problem while in Preview/Edit mode.
This begins to happen as SOON as I add a transition. Whether I add it automatically, or manually.
The clips play fine without transitions in the project and the Event window. These are clips from a Kodak Zi6, I believe shot HD at 60fps, and I'm using NTSC 30fps to create the project. When I "get info" on my clips, the codecs listed are H.264 and AAC, dimensions 1280x720.
When the Movie Project is exported & viewed in QuickTime, it plays smoothly.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated, as I'd like to preview my work as I go!
This movie is LESS than one minute long!

UPDATE - A workaround?
after what you posted about converting the file to the apple codec AIC - it occurred to me to try this.
Put a clip in the project browser - it starts stuttering - with or without transitions.
click on clip and select "clip adjustments". Now when you need to run slow mo you click the "convert clip" button. Do this even though you don't need to slomo the clip and it will come up with "converting whole clip" - this can take a while if the clip/event the clip is from is quite long. Hang in there. Click done. ......and......
all works perfectly.
It seems like the converter converts the whole event because if you now choose other clips from the event they too work with no problems! So looks like... before you start run the conversion on a clip from all the events you are about to use and then you can work normally...
I've run a test project and now transistions/ green screen/ PiP all work smooth. IS this the workaround we needed?
Do you know if the convertion to AiC changes size or quality? I cant tell at the moment. But it works! (well so far.....)
Please let me know if this works for you too - if so it might be worth starting another thread as so many people are having the stutter problem and i've not seen a workaround yet that's easy to do.
Anyone?
Apple - we should not need to do this!

• Why does pre-rendered footage get re-rendered again for every playback or preview?

Dear Sir/Mdm,
I'm a novice, please bear with me.
I'm using an Asus laptop with:
1. CPU: Intel i5-3337U @ 1.80 GHz (4 CPUs)
2. OS: Windows 8.1 64 bits (6.3, Build 9600)
3. RAM: 8 GB
4. DirectX: Version 11
5. On-board Graphics: Intel HD 4000
6. Dedicated Graphics: GeForce GT 740M
7. Dedicated video memory: 2048 MB DDR3
8. Nvidia Driver version: 6.14.13.3523
9. Total available graphics memory: 4096 MB
I hoped to avoid repeated rendering of footage segments during RAM previews, scrub-through, or playbacks.
I pre-composed related layers of completed segments and pre-rendered the pre-comp, which gave a footage (in AVI format) to replace the pre-comp.
But when I scrub-through, playback (spacebar), or do RAM previews, the pre-rendered footage gets re-rendered again (for every scrub-through/preview/playback).
Need advice.
Thanks.

Thanks for the responses and apologies for the slow reply (I spent some time following-up on the clues from the kind responses and did a more focused reading of AE's Help page based on the clues).
To answer Mr Szalam's questions:
I'm using AE CS6 version 11.0.4.2
Memory settings:
Installed RAM: 7.9 GB
RAM Reserved for other applications: 2 GB
RAM Available for AE: 5.9 GB
[Not selected] Reduce cache size when system is low on memory
Previous Multiprocessing settings:
Installed CPUs: 4
CPUs reserved for other applications: 1
RAM allocation per background CPU: 1.5 GB
Actual CPUs that will be used: 0
Current Multiprocessor settings: [Not selected] (due to advice given in the responses)
Copy that on the RAM part. Time for a little hardware upgrade :-)
For Mr/Mdm bogiesan's advice, thanks. Now I know more of what to look out for in simplifying future projects. For this current case, the pre-dendered movie-layer is the only layer-segment as I intended it to be a completed segment in the hope of avoiding repeated renders ... alas, it didn't turn out the way I hoped ... oh well :-)
For Mr Dave La Ronde's advice, copy that. I've disabled multiprocessing. Indeed, I'm using sub-par hardware for the intended purposes.
To sum up:
From AE's Help-pages:
1. "If you have a nested composition ... you can save time during each rendering operation by pre-rendering the nested composition ..."
Takeaway: Re-rendering will occur under all situations, be it a plain movie-layer, effects-applied movie-layer, etc. Pre-rendering was designed to save time on nested compositions only (i.e. re-rendering nested compositions take longer than re-rendering the pre-rendered version of the nested composition).
2. "The rendering of a movie is the frame-by-frame rendering of each of the frames that make up the movie.".
Takeaway: Even plain-movies get re-rendered. Since pre-rendered movies are the same as imported movies, everything gets re-rendered without exception.
Although Premiere Pro CS6 seems to handle movie footages with transition-effects more smoothly (e.g. during scrub-through), but I guess AE CS6 has much more to keep track of if it needs to tell the difference between a plain-movie and an effects-applied one ... perhaps a more optimized approach is indeed to render everything without exception. Perhaps a dedicated no-render-layer-slot can help AE to decide what not to render (i.e. anything dragged into such a no-render-layer will never be rendered) ... but that's just from a novice hobbyist's limited-knowledge perspective (I'm not a professional effects artist, which may be obvious from the sub-par hardware I use ... I bought the Teachers and Students Edition of CS6, which was kindly offered by Adobe at a steep discount ... and I use it to satisfy my curiosity of how those stuff-of-dreams sort of movie-effects are created ... for now, I'm only able to play with basic video montages :-)
Thanks for all the responses. Case closed as AE seems to be designed to render everything without exception.

• HD is jerky and slow

Hello fellow Adobe users,
I am having some issues with prel 8. When I try to edit an HD video taken from my Nikon D3100 the playback is slow and jerky, basically uneditable. I've made sure that the presets are for HD editing when I begin a new project and I've tried video conversion software, but I lose the quality which I so dearly want. Please help me!
I work on a Windows 7 computer with 4GB RAM and an Intel Core 2 Quad CPU processor @ 2.50 GHz, if that is of any help to anyone.
Thanks in advance, Lucy

Lucy,
Welcome to the forum.
IIRC, that Nikon uses the MJPEG CODEC. This ARTICLE will give you a bit more background.
I use the tips in this ARTICLE for setting up my computer for an editing session. For Win7, be sure to see the Win7 Tune Up Tips, on Black Viper's Web site.
Can you also tell us about your I/O sub-system, i.e. your HDD's? This ARTICLE will give you some background. When working in HD (excepot for AVCHD & H.264, which are heavily CPU intensive), the I/O is the most important aspect for ease of editing.
Good luck,
Hunt

• Lion Preview and Textedit very slow when opening files from Leopard Server

My small office (about 10 users) recently upgraded our iMac's, Mac Mini's, and Macbook Pro's. We are experiencing a big problem with Preview opening super slow (1-2 minutes) when trying to open JPG's, PDF's, etc from our 10.5.8 Leopard Server. We have deleted numerous plist files related to Preview, completely deleted Preview.app from one iMac and reinstalled it via Pacifist and still no change in performance. One of the new iMac's does open much faster than the others, but we cannot figure out why this one machine works well and the others don't.
All machines are showing the below error (dozens of times) in Console when trying to open files directly from the server...
sandboxd: ([###]) Preview(###) deny system-fsctl
We have searched the internet for a solution but have not come up with anything that works. This problem exists with Textedit as well. We did try opening a file from one Lion machine to the other and it opened very fast. We also can open files very quickly from older 10.4.11 Tiger machines directly from the server. So the best we can determine right now is Lion and Leopard Server are not playing nicely together.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

"Enable Related Files" isn't the fix for this issue. It's slightly different - I wanted to still load related files, but only the ones local to the file I was editing.
The fix was to use DW's Resolve To IP Address feature. It required adding a registry value - it fixed the issue straight away

• Why is the preview "Open" window so slow?

Hey, there guys!
I am wondering why it is that the new "Open" window is so slow in preview. It opens slowly, and when I select a folder, it takes a long time to index the folder's contents. However, I can open a file in preview using finder just fine. The indexing times are almost identical to those that I got when I first bought my mac. I noticed that after the update to Mountain Lion, there was a tab added to the top left called "iCloud". I'm wondering if this has anything to do with it?
My question is: what I can do to increase the speed of the Preview "Open" command? I have seen a couple of forum posts regarding people having issues opening files, but none of them talked about the open window itself being slow.
Thanks for your help!

Agree the new ios6 is much slower. I found this post by doing a search to find out if it was only me. I've done off & on & a soft reset. Neither helped. Everything seems to load much slower & hangs.
Maybe the new apps aren't optimized yet. However, I had one of my worst experiences with the Apple App Store. One would think they'd know how to optimize their own site & app.
I just hope it's not a bloat issue because the "upgrades" are not worth the performance trade offs to me.
Also, the iMaps are definitely not ready for prime time. I tried getting directions between two locations that were very mainstream and the app said it couldn't provide directions. I'll take Google without turn by turn, thank you. At least let us have a choice and let the best app win.

• Video playback in preview monitors appears as a jagged mess

Video playback in the preview monitors appears as a jagged mess. The audio plays perfectly. I am using Premiere Pro CS4 4.2.1, only DV NTSC. I have checked all my settings, have found nothing that will fix this. What could be causing this problem?

More computer information might help... http://forums.adobe.com/message/4200840
Especially the exact brand/model of your graphics adapter (ATI or nVidia or ???) and the exact device driver number
IF you have an nVidia card...
Right click in any open area of the Windows desktop
Select NVIDIA Control Panel from the popup window
Select SYSTEM INFORMATION at the lower left corner
Driver version should be the 1st line in Details
>checked all my settings

• Preview app freezing and slowing down MBP

Since I updated to OS Mavericks my preview app has not been functioning properly. When the app is open when viewing PDFs a window (accompanied by a progress bar) pops up quite frequently that says "Saving changes... '#' documents remaining", with the # sign representing any number of documets. Often, the number of documents "remaining to be saved" progressively increases from 1 to 8 or so, despite there being only one document open. While the app is doing these "auto saves" my computer is slowed down significantly and while these interuptions occur I am usually unable to do anything else.
I will also add that the size of the PDF files that I view are rather large, on average 70-80 MB, although I'm not sure if that is the reason for the issue because before I updated to Mavericks I didn't have this problem. And the problem does also seem to occur with smaller sized files as well.
My computer usage is usually minimal when this occurs, typically only Safari is open in the background. I was advised to reset my SMC, which I did, but the problem is still occurring. Any additional advice or solutions would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Update: The Preview app is using a lot of memory and I don't know why.
With activity monitor on, I notice that the memory usage for the app spikes considerably when viewing PDFs, especially when I scroll, exactly the same problem as you, loveceratops. When a PDF is initially openend, the activity monitor shows memory usage around 50 MB, but when I scroll within the PDF the memory usage shoots all the way up to 500 or 600 MB. It's at this point that the glitches preciptating in Preview begin to occur.
I've tried deleting/recreating the preview app's ".plist" files in the "Preferences" and "Containers" folders, but that has not solved the issue. I want to try to reinstall Preview, and I just might, but I'm also considering reinstalling OS Mavericks since that may be easier; but I'm concerned that the same problem would still keep happening since I'd be recovering all my files from Time Machine after the reinstall.
Any help solving this issue would be much appreciated, thanks in advance. This is a very frustrating problem.
