Playback on HD DVD players or something average Joe(with a HDTV) can watch

With these new Quicktime Codecs are there any solutions/players that
playback HD movies other than off a harddrive on a computer with the "ability/Quicktime" to play them back.
I make moving fine art films and I need to have a strategy so I can get movies created in HD--out--or on something---so they can be viewed in a gallery setting--or purchased
Dual 1.8 G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2.25 Gigs Ram

You, and others, are waiting for HD DVD's. They're coming but it will be years before format wars end and they'll be expensive.
Only a small percentage of computers have the power to display HD content:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/guide/hd/recommendations.html
These HD files have a tremendous data rate that most computers can't handle. Even when burned as "data" on a DVD most drives can't muster the needed "in and out" speed to play them back.
You'll need a very modern Mac and large display to "showcase" your creations in a local use scenario. Your "buyers" will need special hardware at a considerable expense to be able to view your work.
Remember VHS versus BetaMax? How about "laser disc"players? Those 12 inch monsters didn't stay around very long.

I've lost my itunes icon from my desktop and can't see it anywhere else. I have recently upgraded to windows 9 and thought maybe this had something to do with it. Can anyone help please?

Has iTunes been uninstalled or removed from you system?
Is it no longer in the Start Menu or in Control Panel?
What exactly was downloaded and installed?  There is no Windows 9, so it's not possible that it is installed on your computer.

  • DVD stalls or hesitates on playback on external DVD players

When I play a DVD created in iDVD on DVD players (tried three) it stalls for about 5 seconds in two different places. When I play it on my computer it plays perfectly. The movies on this DVD were created in iMovie. When I play them in Quicktime player they perform perfectly.
    What could be causing this?

Thank you J. and all for the great advice on DVD writing.
I have again rendered the two movies that stall in one place for 2 or 3 seconds. (Five others previously processed without error.)
I then burned the I-DVD file at 2x on single-sided Verbatim DVD-R media.
I then played the DVD on a number of different players. Some played through without error. Other DVD players still had the stalling problem for a couple of seconds.
Since I will be publishing this DVD, with no control over the player people will use, I need to clear up this problem. I have gone back repeatedly to my source file and find no errors there. I will pursue this problem further with the Boinx, the creators of FotoMagico which I am using to author the videos. Perhaps they will know of others who encountered similar problems.
Thanks all again for your helpful input.

  • PAL disks in NTSC DVD Players...OT I know!

    Hi,
I'm posting this here because you chaps are the oracle on all things video and I know there's many of you guys who live across the pond...
In the UK, it's standard nowadays to have NTSC playback on our DVD players.
How does that work in the US? Is PAL a standard playback format...please don't confuse it with regions...different bag.
I'm having a large amount of DVD's pressed and many are going to America, I'm wondering how many I need to get done as actual NTSC if I discover that PAL isn't really supported in the US.
    Help appreciated.
    K.

Yes. iDVD is NTSC by default, you have to make it PAL.
I thought you got a warning saying PAL attributes in an NTSC project, but I'm not an expert on anything with an 'i' in front of it.
Play it in Mac DVD player and get the properties for the file, that will tell you for sure, or of course try playing it in a DVD player you know only supports PAL discs.

  • Plays sometimes?  some dvd players, not others

I have a new MacBook Pro with a super drive and the latest version of iDVD. I work doing video editing but I never burned anything to DVDs before. So I used iDVD and I burned a few on the Taiyo Yuden DVD-Rs. We have a DVD production system that prints right onto the surface so I use no paper labels. After making a few DVDs, I played it with iDVD. I put it into a PC and played it with CyberLink's PowerDVD. They both played fine. But when I play in Windows Media Player, it doesn't work. My boss has grabbed a couple and played them on his PC and he just gets a few seconds of menu music, then it goes black. I am not sure what he used to play it. Also, some clients have taken them home and are unable to play them in a DVD player and their computers. The clients are old, and they could have old dvd players but that shouldn't matter. Before I did the edited we had them as just a video file and would play on insertion (also on dvd-r) and would work fine. So we didn't switch anything except doing the editing. We mass produce these DVDs and distribute them to clients so these need to be compatible with more. Why don't these work with everything? Is there a way to make them more generic to play in more places? I used final cut pro to edit, exported as a .mov file, then dragged to iDVD. I used just the standard revolution menu layout. Nothing fancy. Any ideas?

Once you have the disk image, you would either need to burn a disc or in some way copy that to your duplicator hard drive for duplication. Most duplicators I am aware of let you control the burn speed. I wouldn't choose the slowest or the fastest. 4x is my sweet spot right now.
I won't to go back to why has the ability to play changed question. Are you saying you had a DVD NOT made with iDVD that plays but using iDVD it doesn't play? If so, that has already been answered: could be the menu, could be uncompressed audio, could be just that particular compression.
Are you saying you have the same video made with iDVD that plays in some players but not others? Same answer! Could be the menu the player doesn't like, could be uncompressed audio the player doesn't like. Could be the compression the player doesn't like. I have seen some players that will only playback a CBR (not VBR) disc- the under 60-minute version of iDVDs encoding.
Are you saying you have a disc made on iDVD that played once on a DVD player but that same disc now won't play again? I would say something about the disk integrity has changed. Could be scratched. Could be an "invisible" defect. The only thing you now is that this one disc doesn't work anymore. If this is systematic of all your discs, I would have to say it's a compression issue.

  • DVD's Created on T400 can't be read on DVD Players

When I burn a DVD on my T400 (XP-Pro, Mat**bleep**a DVD-RAM UJ862A), it can't be read on most DVD players.  I have tried different brands of DVDs (Memorex, Verbatim) and still no luck.  Any ideas what I can do?  Or do you know where I can download an updated driver?  Thanks.

I guess you would call it a video DVD.  It is just a homemade movie made from a slide show from Windows Movie Maker.  The DVD's I burn on my T400 do play on my son's DVD player which is brand new, and they seem to play on other computers.   But they do not play on either of my DVD players, one of which is about a year old and one is about 3 years old.  If I use the same procedure and same software to burn the DVD on another computer, it plays fine on both my DVD players.  Seems to be something about this DVD drive that has limited compatibility.  Thanks for your help.

  • DVD's created from iDVD 6.0.2 won't play in other DVD players

I currently purchased a MacBook Pro with the new iLife, I am running iDVD 6.0.2 and have created a DVD of a home movie. I have tested the playback of the DVD in the Mac and it works perfectly; however, I have now tried it in 3 other DVD players (a home DVD player that is 2 years old, a PC DVD player that is less than 6months old, and a Laptop DVD player less than 2 months old) and all of them refuse the DVD.
I built the DVD using NTSC (not PAL), and I have tried it in 16:9 and 4:3 formats using a DVD-R and DVD+R disc.
Any suggestions or thoughts as to why this is happening?
    Mike

    Hello Mike,
a DVD burned on a mac is likely to play there - your burner should recognize it's work.... there are, however often compatibility issues with other DVD players, especially set-top players. these problems are most commonly related to DVD-brand quality/compatibility issues or burn speed issues.
to try and solve the problem try the following:
    1. do not burn your DVD using iDVD. instead create a disc image on your hard drive
    2. burn the disc image to disc using Toast's "DVD from VIDEO_TS" option (you could use disc utility but it doesn't give you burn speed control).
    3. choose a good quality DVD. if you check around on this board you'll find that most of the knowledgable users recommend Verbatim and i'll second that.
    4. burn at slow speed. i personally burn at 2x but you could give it a try at 4x.
    5. use DVD-R in order to avoid compatibility problems. never use rewritable media.
    hope this helps

  • Burning discs that work in low-end DVD players

    Hi everybody.
Situation: I'm burning DVDs of a rough cut of a documentary for festivals and various interested parties. I'm burning with DVD SP. I was using Memorex 16X DVDs. The resulting DVDs work on computers and most DVD players. But they don't work on mine, a cheap Toshiba (SD-2109).
So I switched to Verbatim 4X DVDs. Same result. They work on computers and most - but not all - DVD players and not on my DVD player.
Should I switch to a different brand/different burn speed? Or is it impossible to burn DVDs on DVD SP that are reliable everywhere? Do I need to be burning with Toast so I can match the burn speed to the disc speed AND use a higher end DVD such as verbatim? Memorex 16X DVDs burned with Toast set at 16X do not play on my DVD player either.

Assuming that everyone who had a failure reported it, that is 4% from burned DVDs from a computer using Memorex, which does not sound that bad believe it or not.
The SD-2109 is a rather old player and some older players can be difficult, there is a difference between a replicated DVD and a burned DVD in how they work/made.
If possible you can try this:
    www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/making_dvdcopies.html
and burn in finder using a slower speed. Also if could be that the media is not playable
But before you do that, look here for the media playback issue for your machine, it is listed as an issue on a couple of sites - in other words it looks DVD-R/Player issue more than a DVD SP issue.

  • HD DVD Burners and DVD Players

Someone recently told me that to have HD Quality video using an HD digital camera such as the HDR-FX1, i need an HD DVD burner, and an HD DVD player. Is this true? Or can I just use my LaCie DVD burner and my Sony DVD player and still get HD quality?

It is unknown at this time what will play in HD DVD players when they arrive. Sony, Apple, HP and other are supporting BluRay(tm) and H.264 as their selected format, Intel, Microsoft, Toshiba and others another encoding technology, some sort of Window Media stuff.
Yes, HD does take 4 times as many bits, and more than that for up to 24 channels of audio; but compression technology continues to improve. WRT H.264, I don't know what it's maximum bit rate is and I've not seen definitive articles on compression artifacts and other concerns on HD material. When HD DVD arrives, many of us will want to see substantial improvements over the best DVD has to offer; I'd really like 1080p rather than interlaced, for example. Bluray certainly has the technical specs to provide the data storage for that. But we'll have to wait and see who wins the technology battles.
    Ed.
PS: there was a news article today which said the Chinese are even going to invent their OWN HD DVD standards for a third competing method of creating DVDs. Something about wanting to avoid licensing fees in the Chinese market.

  • Aspect Ratio Conversion Hardware in DVD Players

We shoot/edit/author product that goes straight to DVD or digital download. It is very unlikely that what I produce will end up broadcast. We are leaning toward shooting new features in 16:9. My question is: does anyone know approximately when DVD players started coming with Aspect Ratio Conversion Hardware as a standard feature? (I have a really old (pre-millenium) JVC at home that doesn't have that.) Our main concern is that we don't want to make the switch to 16:9 only if it is a recent occurrence because we don't want to have upset customers trying to view it 4:3. Any thoughts? Thanks!!

You've either gotten bad advice or simply aren't clued into DVD technology.
DVDs, as a format, launched with anamorphic widescreen. The first discs ever sold by Warners Bros (champion of the format) in March of 1997 contained anamorphic content on one side and pan-scan transfers on another.
Finalized in 1995, the DVD spec clearly states that all players, in order to bear the DVD logo, must be able to letterbox anamorphic content for playback on a 4:3 TV. I still have a DVD player from 1999, and it is indeed able to letterbox.
I've never come across a player sold in the US that wasn't able to letterbox anamorphic material. Are you sure you're not setting the TV Shape (or maybe it's labeled Aspect Ratio) on your player incorrectly?

  • Help, I'm drowning...movies play on computer but not in DVD players

a problem i seem to have with my videos is that when I am done, they play on computers using dvd player apps but when I burn them to a DVD to play in a DVD player they do not play correctly. It drops frames or looks like they skip or something..For instance they play for a couple of seconds, stop, continue to play, stop, continue to play...this goes on throughout the entire video.
What causes this to happen? I've experimented with different compression formats and get the same outcome. I also tried both DVD studio and Toast to burn the DVD and get same results with both.
Is there a basic setting that I am over looking? What is the format that everyone uses when using Compressor? Currently I go from FCP, to Compressor, to DVD...I have nearly went through all the compressor formats and still get jerky,stop/play/stop/play video when going to the DVD format....
    HELP...what am I over looking??

"....and you still haven't converted your audio to Dolby2 as I've suggested since my first post."
YES It was converted in compressor to a Dolby/ac3 file this morning when i mentioned it in my last post .."that I re-compressed it again as a "Best Quality 90...." and said that it fixed about 95% of the jerkiness..."
And since your first post i've only been at the project since this morning...not last night.and it was the first thing i tackled (and tried) when i got in ..When I posted the issue i was at home and not at the office, so Iwas not able to try anything until this morning
So let me re-explain what I have done to the file since 7:30 this AM..
I re-sent it to compressor, compressed at Best 90/Dolby ->AC3....I then opened DVDsp...I dragged both files...(the Mpeg file and the AC3 to the DVDsp window...Simulated and burned..I burn two copies. one for me, one for the client...we use two different DVD players. He says its still a lil jerky...I reply saying yes I saw it on my disc as well.
SO with being said and the file IS currently a dolby AC3...why would it still be jerky?
Would it have anything to do with footage being ripped from another disc?
I really appreciate the help you offering but it sounds like you are being condescending trough your answers and making it seem as though i am not doing what you suggest.

  • DVD does not play back on all computers and DVD players after burning

I have built and formatted a dvd using dsp but it will not playback on laptops even though it works fine on dvd players macs, and pcs. On some laptops there is no sound others just crash. Is this a problem with the laptops or how i have formatted the dvd?

    suggestion 1
If you are trying to playback on a PC laptop running windows:
Do not use Windows Media Player to play back the DVD, it wont work, it is not a DVD player.
Use the software supplied with the DVD drive such as Win DVD or Power DVD.
    suggestion 2
The disc format is incompatible with the DVD drive:
If the disc you created is a DVD-R and you play on a DVD+R drive, or a DVD+R disc played in a DVD-R drive then the disc will not play.
    suggestion 3
the drive is a CD drive not a DVD drive
