Playback Video Device?

Dear PrP CC Users,
I wanted to ask a few questions regarding setting up playback for best accuracy performace when dealing with video and sound.
In Preferences > Playback. I have 4 Dell monitors (connected to GPU via HDMI, DVI-D x2 and a DisplayPort) and a Samsung TV (connected to a DeckLink Blackmagic Mini Monitor Video I/O). The 4 monitors for me to work off from and the TV for the Director/Client.
My query is regarding the Audio Device selection. I have it selected as Adobe Desktop Audio, there is the option of Blackmagic playback (my amplifier is also connected to the TV).
My regular desktop audio is connected to my Mac Pro output jack at the rear to my amplifier.
When dealing with editing projects such as music videos, syncing is an important factor and I want to make sure where I'm getting the most accurate synced representation. What is the best Audio Device to use and should I Offset my Video Blackmagic Playback, is there some way to properly calibrate for this? Also, depending on that, where should I focus my attention when making sure audio is synced to video. - I'm not talking about how to merge audio with video clips and syncing using the clapper-board. I'm talking about playback accuracy once sound is synced. As often the client/director will say its out of sync on the TV when its not out of sync with me on my monitors.
Perhaps if someone can explain on here or recommend me a link to how best set up and calibrate for video/audio sync whilst editing, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

I have a similar setup as the OP, 4 computer screens for the work space and a Plasma connected via a Blackmagic HDMI output for the program monitoring. I use the BM card AES outputs for the audio monitoring going via a Dolby decoder. I measured the video delay to the Plasma and it was 38ms compared to the audio. I have set a delay in the Dolby box to 32ms, this plus the acoustic delay form my speakers gives me good lipsync. (There is a delay of aprox 1ms for each foot you are from the speakers). I used to have a crt as my grading monitor fed from the SD SDI op of the BM card, this had a delay of 50ms, caused by the hardware convertor in the BM card.
As the brain expects to see something before it hears it, if something looks slightly out of sync it is likely that the audio is early.

    Can someone tell me how to fix this error in 10.4.11 on a G5 Quad Core 2.5GHz Tower...A valid video device could not be found for playback. [-70017]

    That's an error reported from DVD Player I believe...
    kDVDErrorMissingGraphicsDevice = -70017, // A valid graphics device is not available.
    There's some conjecture it has to do with HDCP, or Video Card problems, but the only 2 cures/fixes I found were Software related, one was cured by updating the OS, another by replacing the Video kexts.
    I think this error also shows up if trying to use DVD player in Safe Mode, (too much research isn't good! ).

    Can't think of much to try at the moment, but perhaps reapplying the big 10.4.11 combo, Repair Permissions, & reboot would help, not sure.

  • I can't get dvds to play "There was an initialization error. A valid video device could not be found for playback. [-70017]  Anybody know how to resolve this?

    I can't get dvds to play and, instead, get "There was an initialization error.  A valid video device could not be found for playback. [-70017]"  I went in for a Genius appt Friday and it played for the tech...but now I'm back home (one and a half hours from the store) and I'm getting the error message again when I try to load a dvd.  Any recommendations?

    Hello, try this...
    Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
    Reboot... any change?

  • My 2nd Monitor not showing up as a Video Device in P Pro Preferences- Playback

    I'm on P Pro CC (Windows) and want to add my 2nd monitor (a Samsung HDTV via HDMI) for editing.  It's all connected, but when I go into Edit->Preferences->Playback, I just see one video device and that's the Adobe TV.  It doesn't show a 2nd device.  Any ideas on how to get this going so I can use the 2nd monitor to display the program monitor separately?  Thanks.  (BTW, the computer itself is able to recognize the monitor, because it mirrors the computers display.)

    Yeah, you were on the right track.  Finally figured it out, and I had my computer display settings for mirror.   I changed those to some other setting (can't remember), and then Premiere recognized it as a 2nd monitor.  As soon as it worked, I was smacked with the image of video on the new monitor...and that monitor's quality was horrible.  So time to return the monitor, and leave dual monitor setup for another day when I have time to research and get a good monitor.  Plus all audio got piped into monitors **** speakers...so I will have to sort the audio out when I sort the new monitor out.  Another day.  Thanks for the reply.  Editing that feature I was prepping the last time we spoke on audio quality, 24/96 etc, so thought dual display would give me some more real estate when dealing with clips in the timeline.  Next feature, we'll definitely set up editing station properly ahead of time.

    Hello
    I have read an identical unsolved discussion to my problem here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3067284&#3067284
    I have an intel Mac Mini 1.66 Ghz Intel Core Duo with 1 G ram running 10.4.10.
    When I put in a DVD the dialogue says: Valid video device could not be found for playback (-70017)
    I have tried deleting the preferences, but no luck?
    Any thoughts?

    When you insert a commercial DVD, does the system show any sign of attempting to open an application? It should, by default, open DVD Player, but you could get that error if you were trying to play something like a DVD with a different region code.
    Check the CDs & DVDs preference pane, and look at what it says against 'when you insert a video DVD'. If this isn't set to open DVD player, then select that and see if that gives better results.
    If you are trying to play DVDs from another region, you might download and install VLC player from http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html This is a versatile player application which can cope with out-of-region DVDs. Once installed, use the CDs and DVDs preference pane to set that as the preferred application to open when inserting a video DVD, and see if that works.

  • Playback Video (format 3GPP) on j2me midp 2.0

    Hi all,
    By now all recent mobile phone should playback many video type included le format 3GP.
    But I can't playback any Video from J2me midp 2.0 API.
    Are there someone here who know a solution independent of device to playback video on j2me midp platform ?
    Thank you,
    Tien
    (www.tranthuong.com)

    Something like this:
    private void playFile( String filename ) {
      try
        InputStream is = getClass().getResourceAsStream(filename);
        m_player = Manager.createPlayer(is, "video/3gpp");
        m_player.prefetch();
        m_player.start();
      catch (Exception ex)
        System.out.println(ex.toString());
    } Also in MIDP 2 check VolumeControl
    If your mobile support JSR-135:
    try {
         Player p = Manager.createPlayer("http://abc.mpg");
         p.realize();
         VideoControl vc;
         if ((vc = (VideoControl)p.getControl("VideoControl")) != null)
             add((Component)vc.initDisplayMode(vc.USE_GUI_PRIMITIVE, null));
         p.start();
    } catch (MediaException pe) {
    } catch (IOException ioe) {
    }In this case you also can
    InputStream is = getClass().getResourceAsStream(filename);
    Player p = Manager.createPlayer(is, "video/3gpp");

  • Any way to use 80GB Classic with a "Portable" video device

    I have asked questions about this topic in other threads over the past month, but I am going to revive it here. I am leaving on a trip shortly, and I'm trying to receive a definitive answer whether there is any conceivable way to use my 80 GB iPod Classic with a portable video player. Some of the most frequently ones mentioned are the Motorola iFlip, the Philips 750, Sonics V55....I have read confusing reports of people going backwards to firmware 1.0.2 to use the TV out feature to get them to play on a TV...with Apple cables..., but I still have been unable to decipher whether anyone anywhere has successfully been able to use an iPod Classic with any type of "Portable" video device. I am not opposed to paying for appropriate cables or even an Apple produced device, but I don't believe one exists. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated.

    Which probably refers to the iPod 5th generation (commonly called the iPod Video). Do Philips specifically advertise this as compatible with the iPod Classic?
    Yes, you are correct, it probably does refer to the Ipod 5th generation of Ipods; however, that's not stated on any packaging for the Philips product. It simply says: "Docking Entertainment System DVD Portable with dock for iPod" and later in the instruction manual it says: You can dock your iPod player for playback of stored files and recharging. Only 30G, 60G and 80G iPod players with video are supported." So my point is that how would anyone know that Philips is refering to the 5th generation Ipods until after the product was purchased and used? My answer: He or she would not know...could not know based solely on the packaging and instructions...and in some cases until a knowledgeable Philips customer service person provided the correct answer. This miscommunication could have been avoided completely if only Philips had incorporated "5th generation Ipods" in it's promotional and instruction language. Even after the units were shipped, a simple disclaimer could have been sent to retail stores that carried the product and placed in (or on) the packaging. Furthermore, Philips could alter the manual on its own Web site to provide a clarification. So far, none of these tasks has occurred.
    I'm curious as to why you think it's Apple's responsibility to ensure the new iPods work with this Philips product.
    I not never said who is responsible. Neither company wants to accept responsibility. It appears, however, that Apple altered its firmware and/or software that renders many products (including the Philips DCP 750/37)incompatible with the Ipod Classic. All I want is to use my Ipod Classic with a third party product. I don't care where the fix comes from that allows this to happen.

  • Valid Video Device Not Found

    I have a 2.66GHz Mac Mini with 4GB of RAM 500GB Hard Drive and am getting an error with DVD Player coming up and saying "There Was An Initialization Error: Valid Video Device Could Not Be Found For Playback (Error -700117." I have my video set at 720P (connected to a 42" Plasma TV via HDMI) have run software update and have tried other media sources and I still get the error. Any thoughts as to why? I rarely use the DVD on the MM for dvd playback, but when I used my laptop (MBP, 2.16 GHz, 3GB RAM) I never had this error with these same settings Is something wrong with the DVD player in the MAc Mini or are there other things I have overlooked?
    Thanks in advance!

    I have the exact same problem with almost the exact same configuration, the difference being I have a Denon receiver between the mac-mini and the TV via HDMI. Also "Front Row" is unable to play the DVD. This occurs on just about every DVD I use. It seems to come up when I turn off the TV for a period of time and turn it back on.
    I find that if I restart the mac-mini with the DVD ejected it resolves the problem, but that workaround is less than ideal.
    I would love a resolution to this pain-in-the-neck issue.

  • Missing video device / apple firewire

    When trying to caputure, a box comes up that says "attempt to capture video without a video device. Please select video device from capture presets."
    Under capture presets, where it lists all the settings for each preset, it says: "WARNING video device dv video is missing."
    Under a/v settings -> summary -> video playback, it says "[missing] Apple firewire PAL." (I'm using PAL)
    When trying to log and capture, I can't see the image, but can control the camera.
    Background: I just reinstalled FCP HD and Quicktime.
    If anyone has any ideas about this, it would be greatly appreciated.

      Mac OS X (10.3.9)   FCP HD

    Nathan,
    The setup of you system is a little unclear from your profile.
    Are working in 10.3.9 with FCP4.5 and now gone back to QT6.5.2?
    If so, that is a very reliable grouping. I'd say, unless you have changed or added a drive, changed the firewire port the drive is connected to or changed some other physical element, the QT reinstall is not working as it should.
    Try trashing the receipts, download the full installer and then run it from your hard drive again.
    Good luck.

    Basic troubleshooting steps clearly outlined in the User Guide are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new device.
    If you have been through ALL of the troubleshooting steps and you're still having problems, then you'll need to bring your phone to Apple for investigation.

  • Selected audio and video devices may not match

    Hello - I was able to Print to Video w/no problem, from my Mac Book Pro, to my Panasonic PV-GS320 w/no problem. Now, all of a sudden, when trying to do this, I get this msg.:
    'The selected audio and video devices may not match. Please verify that the a/v outputs are externally routed to the intended device(s).'
    Not sure what happened, or what changed, but here is my setup:
    Sequence & Capture Presets are both: DV NTSC 48 kHz
    Device control preset: FireWire Basic
    Video Playback: Apple Firewire NYSC (720 x 480)
    Audio Playback: Default
    Like I said, I don't know what got changed, but, it was working before - hope someone can help, thanks so much!!
    Kristina

    I think I found the problem...I had forgotten to switch my Device Control Preset back to FireWire, from the previous non-controllable - thanks so much!

  • Can I use the HDMI Out on my macbook pro retina for audio without connecting a video device?

    While the MBP has TOSLINK output from the headphone jack, TOSLINK does not have the bandwidth to carry the high resolution audio from many blu-rays and DVD-Audio disks. I would like to hook my MBP to an audio-only HDMI sink so I can pipe the multichannel output to my surround speaker setup.
    My concern is that the MBP will get "confused" and do one of the following things - both of which are "bad":
    1) It will decide that a video device is there, and put the desktop on the nonexistent HDMI display OR
    2) It will decide to send no signal at all (no video, no audio) because it sees no video device.
    Any thoughts on this?
    In short - thinking of using something like this: http://www.ambery.com/2hddodtsdihd.html
    with the HDMI out of the MBP and then piping its 6 discrete analog outputs to my old (but excellent for computer speakers) Logitech Z680 setup.
    But I want any movie video to remain unperterbed on my Thunderbolt display. And if I am not watching a movie and am just listening to multichannel FLACs or something, then I'd like to run the media player normally and have the usual desktop on my MBP or Thunderbolt display.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks to all!!

    Not from Apple, you can go to the grey market if you choose but it is most likely that the only MB that will work is the one you already have.

    Maybe, if the Sonnet is properly Thunderbolt compatible it should.

  • Error message: "Attempt to capture video without a video device selected."

    When trying to log and capture, I'm receiving the following error message: "Attempt to capture video without a video device selected. Please select a video device in your capture presents and try again."
    In Capture Presents under DV NTSC 48 kHz it says "WARNING: Video Device DV Video is missing."
    An attempt to edit the Capture Preset gives me QuickTime Video Setting Digitzer options of only "[missing] DV Video."
    This happened only after I upgraded to Tiger. I know Log and Capture is recognizing the camera because it's showing the timecodes, but not the image. Any help would be most appreciated.

    This reminds me of a problem with the QuickTime install. Try this - remove all the QuickTime associated .pkg files from /Library/Receipts, then go to http://www.quicktime.com and download the full installer and do a complete install.
