Playbook showing as unknown device in desktop manager

Hi
Just bought a Playbook and wanted to transfer some files across to it.  Unfortunately I have come up against a fairly major problem with this.  First thing I did was connect it to my PC and start up Desktop Manager, unfortunately the Playbook comes up as 'Unknown Device'.  Tried checking all settings including everuything recommended in article KB27464 with no success.  The Playbook shows as network device in Device Manager in both the PC's I've tried (one runing Win7 Starter and the other Home Premium) and as far as I can see all settings correct but no joy.
I then tried using the network share option as suggested on the support site.  Typed in the relevant IP address (file:/192.168.1.5) in the run dialogue after truning WiFi sharing on with no luck.  All I get is Windows can't find the relevant folder!  Then tried the same technique but using the USB IP address but still no luck!
Can anyone help me as after many years of enjoying various blackberry devices this tablet is wearing my patience very thin.
Carl

Hi
Thanks for the reply, I was going to return the tablet this morning but thought I'd give it another go.  Anyway after turning off both WiFi and Bluetooth as well as disabling sharing I plugged the Playbook in and it was detected!  Anyway now managed to get it synched, updated and bridged to my 9900 so everything's looking great.
Thanks again for you advice, hopefully I can help someone else in the future as I get to know more about the tablet
Regards
Carl

  • Problems Connecting Device To Desktop Manager and Apploader.exe

Just got a new BB8900 last Friday. On Monday, I encountered a Reload Software: 552 error code and after checking online forums for options on how to fix I ultimately had to reinstall the operating system and reinstall new apps that weren't archived by the reinstall process. Because I feared getting this error again whenever I rebooted the device, I immediately made backups every hour as I was reconfiguring the device and adding back my apps.
Today I was going to do another backup for good measure and once I connected my Blackberry to the computer with Desktop Manager running, Desktop Manager crashed and gave me the following error:
    Problem signature:
    Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
    Application Name: DesktopMgr.exe
    Application Version: 5.0.0.11
    Application Timestamp: 4a4bd539
    Fault Module Name: DesktopMgr.exe
    Fault Module Version: 5.0.0.11
    Fault Module Timestamp: 4a4bd539
    Exception Code: c0000005
    Exception Offset: 000d68f5

    Additional Information 3: 83e8
    Additional Information 4: 72466a8a5092651f7fe609f9ec3f3489
I then tried the APPLOADER.EXE program locating in program files/common files/research in motion/apploader. I had used this program yesterday to try to delete applications 1 by 1 with the hope that one application was causing the 552 error. Now for some reason this program also is having a problem noting the following in the error log file:
Read from location 1010fffc caused an access violation.
I've looked through multiple forums and haven't found a solution. What I can tell you is this:
    1) The phone is working fine but I fear rebooting the phone and getting another 552 error (there were two apps deleted that will be fully deleted on reboot). Would hope everything is fine but I've had two of these 552 errors within 24 and the second one came without any warning. If I get this error there is no way to get to my backup since I can't connect to DM without it crashing.
    2) It doesn't appear to be a sync issue but I deleted the Intellisync folder anyway and it didn't fix the problem.
    3) Have rebooted my machine with no change to problem.
    4) Have reinstalled DM Version 5 (this time without the Roxio Media software) with no change to problem.
    5) Because I now get an error when connecting to DM and trying to run apploader.exe, there appears to be a setting on my phone that might be causing the problems (I have no idea what it may be but the APPLOADER program notes a location violation so maybe the Blackberry software is confused about where to find my Apps?)
    6) The BlackBerry device manager works fine and notes my device and applicable serial number.
After my last backup yesterday I probably only installed 3-4 other apps that I had lost and organized/moved folders around on the phone. So getting this problem so soon after everything was working fine is mindboggling.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Another Update:  I seemed to have found the problem.  While RIM support recommended I do a device wipe I pushed back since the rest of the phone functionality seemed to work fine.  I opted to begin removing applications from the phone one by one and then trying to connect to Desktop Manager.
Once I removed the ZDNet Tech News For IT Professionals and rebooted the phone, I was able to connect and do a backup. I'm sure this app works fine for almost everyone else, but for some unknown reason (maybe it conflicts with another app on my phone), Desktop Manager did not like it and shut down. I initially reinstalled it again and was able to do another backup but an hour later Desktop Manager shut down again (perhaps in doing an update on news it creates a conflict with Desktop Manager).
Anyways summary of learnings since my issue seemed to be somewhat uniqueCurve 8900)
    1) If Desktop Manager shuts down and you've tried other solutions on forums such as deleting the Intellisync folder and reinstalling Desktop Manager, try deleting applications 1 by 1 and rebooting the phone before trying to connect again to Desktop Manager.
    2) If you have had this problem, do frequent backups and keep track of what you add to your phone so in case there's a problem you know the most recent apps to remove (in my case I couldn't get to my latest backup since DM would shut down with the app conflict).
    3) Only consider a device wipe if you have exhausted your apps removal testing.  Apps which came on your phone which note the vendor in the About section of the app as RIM should be fine.  Also while apps on AppWorld are being offered by BlackBerry there is no certainty that they will work on your phone.

  • Why do certain apps were not showing up in creative cloud desktop manager

I'm not so sure on why this error message shows up every time I logged in to my computer. Here’s my scenario…
Every time I try to open the Creative Cloud desktop manager and it will not launch as if it’s not working. So I saved a copy of their installer so that I can reinstall it every time I login. Yes EVERY TIME. Once the CC desktop manager shows up, the only app that shows up is LR. But as I check my Control Panel, Photoshop CC, Dreamweaver and Acrobat was installed. However, as I try to launch those three programs, that error above shows up. So my daily routine is to install a software and use it. Then tomorrow, same routine again. I’m doing this process for a month now and I’m getting tired of it as time goes by. Is there a possible solution for this? I’ve tried to uninstall and reinstall it again but having the same loop over and over again. Thanks for the help! I’m using Windows by the way.

It seems that the problem is still there. The usual routine of mine.
First I opened the Creative Cloud desktop launcher and nothing's happening. It's not opening as if it's not installed. So I tried to run the installer again and it pops out and it only shows that Lightroom is the only one installed. As you can see on the photo above, it shows that Dreamweaver, Acrobat, and Photoshop were installed but it's now showing up in my Apps list. I tried to open Photoshop and it requires me to log in to my Adobe account before I can continue using it. Before, I can use it even if I'm not connected to the Internet. But now, there's this sign in page and I need to be logged in to my Adobe account before I can use Photoshop. Is there a possible solution to this?

  • Digital Video Camera not showing up as device on desktop

I have a 6 year old sony digital video camera. I am able to connect via firewire and upload video using imovie without a problem. It shows up as an option in imovie as dv-vcr. However the video camera does not show up in the desktop and when it is connected I can't find it being recognized anywhere using spotlight. So I am unsure of how to disconnect it. Normally if it shows up in the desktop I would just 'eject' it by dragging to trash. But now I just turn it off and unplug it. When I do it that way the 'did not disconnect properly' message shows up and my external harddrive that is plugged into the other firewire port disappears. Any ideas on how to solve this?

    Hi mpagriffin
Try this: with Finder on the menu bar go to *Finder / Finder Preferences* and select General, then check all the boxes for *Show these items on the Desktop*.
You also might check to see if it shows up and ejects in Disk Utility?
note: that some devices won't show up on the desktop, my wife's Canon will only mount in and eject from iPhoto while all of our other camera's mount on and eject from the desktop.

    hi ktmcmo,
Are all the USB 2.0/3.0 ports in the front/back part working fine?
Some other steps that you can try:
    1. Download and run Nirsoft's USBDeview v2.27 (download here)
    2. Create a System Restore point
    3. On the USBDeview interface, right click on the USB controller/hub that's giving you the General Failure error and try to disconnect/uninstall or disable the device and observe if you still get the same error on USBView/Lenovo Solutions Center.
    - Link to picture
     4. If same issue occurs, undo the changes that you have made in Step 3 and make a create a registry backup. On the USBdeview interface, right click again on the USB controller/hub that's giving you the General Failure and choose Open in RegEdit. In the registry, delete the registry key and/or subkey of the failing device and reboot (Windows will automatically re-install the device using the inbox driver).
    - Link to picture
    Note:
Only do Step 4 if you have a backup copy of your files and have created a system restore point / registry backup.

  • Unknown device in device manager after win8.1 upgrade W540

I'm using the W540 with an ultradock and external monitors. After upgrading my W540 to win8.1 64 bit, device manager is showing an unknown device. I'm not quite sure what it is, but almost everything seems to be working fine and Lenovo solution center isn't finding any driver updates.
I did notice that the solution center hardware scan did not test the video card memory and listed that test as N/A. Video and monitors seem to be working fine though and both nvidia and intel graphics show up in device manager.
Device manager lists the device in question as follows:
    Device instance path: ROOT\SYSTEM\0001
    Hardware Ids: root\iwdbus
    Device stack: \Driver\PnPManager

  • Device time moves back 1 hour every time I sync with Desktop Manager

Every time that I sync my device using Desktop Manager the time of day on the device moves back one hour. Both my PC and my BB device are set to Central US time, so I can think of no reason why this occurs.
    Ideas?

If you can't resolve the DST on your computer you can also change the sync settings to not update your clock.

  • Desktop Manager - Vista

    Hi All,
i have a lot of problem with Desktop manager and Windows Vista.
I tried sw rev 4.3, 4.22, but i have every time some problem with the connection.
Sometime after installation, during the boot of the software it crashed and software was killed automatically.
Which is the stablest sw version on Windows vista? There are any particolar device firmware for using with Vista?
I heard a lot of problem aorund with Vista OS. Is possible that RIM is not able to develop a stable sw version for this SO?

CauseThe BlackBerry device user is attempting to install a version of BlackBerry Desktop Manager older than version 4.2.
ResolutionTo resolve this issue, download and install the latest version of BlackBerry Desktop Manager from www.blackberry.com.
IMPORTANT: If the BlackBerry device user has any previous versions of Roxio® software installed, they may still be unable to install BlackBerry Desktop Manager. If this is the case, install BlackBerry Desktop Manager without the Roxio component.
Additional InformationFor BlackBerry Desktop Manager 4.2.0.14
The BlackBerry device user will be able to successfully install BlackBerry Desktop Manager 4.2.0.14 on Microsoft Windows Vista. However, BlackBerry Desktop Manager will exhibit the following behavior:
BlackBerry Desktop Manager will detect the BlackBerry device on Microsoft Windows Vista in the Connection Settings menu.
Once Microsoft Windows Vista detects the BlackBerry device, BlackBerry Desktop Manager will show a Connected status and proceed to a Working status.
BlackBerry Desktop Manager will stay in a Working status unless the BlackBerry device user disconnects the BlackBerry device, at which time it will show a Disconnected status.
To use the BlackBerry Desktop Manager with the BlackBerry device, the BlackBerry device user must first open the appropriate component (application loader tool, backup and restore tool, email settings tool, Media Manager, or synchronization tool), then connect the BlackBerry device.
The cause of this behavior is unknown. Certain features of BlackBerry Desktop Manager do not work the same on Microsoft Windows Vista as on previous versions of Microsoft Windows.

  • Non CISCO unknown devices are being discovered in LMS

    Hi!
I have had no problem with discovery which was used on cdp basis so far.
Now the CDP packets do not arrive via new MPLS backbone network.  I have to use the "ping sweep feature in IP range" feature. I had to enter more than 400 subnet from file before there are more than 400 branches. ( etc. 10.31-9.1-50.252 255.255.255.252 )
    I have experienced two problems
    1. The discovery never end ( now this is not important ) :-)
    2. The common services -- device management shows discovered unknown devices whose ip addresses out side the range what are entered by me in the ping sweep range and theirs OID is not CISCO.
    (  1.3.6.1.4.1.2001.1.1.1.1  ,  1.3.6.1.4.1.11.2.3.9.1  ,  1.3.6.1.4.1.674.10892.2  , 1.3.6.1.4.1.18334.1.1.1.2.1.7.1.2 and even more )
Due to more than 300 unknown devices the LMS device number is beyond the license number!!!!!
    Our questions.
Why does lms add the unknown devices ( non cisco devices ) to the inventory ?
How could lms discover  these devices ??? ) ( theirs IP are out of ping sweep range and non cdp capable devices )
    Thanks in advance!

    Thank you!
The unknown devices were in unreachable state and they were added to DCR.
I don't use include or exclude filter what were referred by bug.
In spite of i use seed device list from file the LMS ping sweep debug log shows that LMS try to ping other IP addresses!!!!
You're right, it is not normally operation may be TAC will be needed to  solve it.
( whether who tested it ?)

  • Unknown device seen by HH4 and allocated static IP...

    I'm setting up a new HH4.
In the list of home network devices it shows an 'unknown' device.  It seems it's a wireless device (connected through an access point; the AP tells me it's connected there).  I have no idea of what the device is.  On looking at its properties on the HH manager, it seems it's been allocated a 'static' IP address, within the normal DHCP range.  All my other devices show 'IP address assignment: DHCP' where this one shows 'Static'.
Any idea why this device would have been allocated a static address?  As far as I know, this is something I could configure the HH's DHCP server to do (but I haven't); I don't think it's something that the device itself can request.  So how does this come about?  I'm hoping this information will help me figure out what this device is.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Lots of my devices have registered as 'unknown' initially, then I've been able to identify them (using the MAC address, for example) and change the name.  But all these have been allocated addresses using DCHP (as I would expect).  What's odd about this is that (a) I still can't identify it and (b) it's been allocated a static address.  If I understood the reason for (b) I might be able to solve (a).

  • Ipod nano "unknown device"

I have just bought an ipod nano 4.0GB, and my computer doesn't recognize it, it says "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windowns does not recognize it."..In my device manager it shows as "unknown device", and no driver is installed...for what I've been researching, it seems to be happening a lot with Dell computers... I tried everything Apple support site says, and still no change, I even tried what other postings say, like reseting the ipod pressing the center whell and menu button...or even turning it to disk mode, I get the message, OK to disconnect...
    Can anyone help?
    Appreciate it

This is a comman error with many Windows XP Users. I myself had encountered it but fixed it with ease . You have to Reset your ipod and Get the Latest Ipod UPDater Software.
    To Reset your IPOD_
Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
Tip: If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.
After that Plug it in to the computer with the LATEST IPOD UPdATER SOFTWAre from this site.

  • Unknown device in Lenovo Solution Center Helix

It's not causing any problems, but it's killing me to know there is an unknown device that I can figure out what it is!!!  Talk about Fly in the Ointment.

Lenovo Solution Center currently has a bug that happens on systems with touchscreens, it shows an unknown device like you say, even though there isn't anything wrong.
There is supposedly an update to LSC coming this week or next, it should fix this bug.
And there is something you can do about it, click on the "remind me" option and then select "never", then LSC won't bug you about this non-issue anymore.  Sorry for this inconvenience caused by LSC.

  • Add or edit address book using Desktop Manager

Is there any way that I can add or edit my address book using the Desktop software? I would like to input email addresses and other information into my address book on my blackberry without having to type everything in on the blackberry. I was hoping there would be a way to do that on my PC and have it sync to my phone.

he following steps will help you to configure synchronization -
Connect your device using Desktop Manager and click on Synchronization
From the menu on the left click Synchronization under Configuration
Again click Synchronization button on the right which will give you option to Select Device Application that you want to synchronize
Put the check mark and you'll get a prompt to Select Desktop Application
Highlight the application name and click next button
Under Synchronization Option you get Direction of Synchronization
Check the radio button with Two way sync
Note: above mentioned steps are explained as per Desltop Manager 4.5
    Example: Synchronize addressbook -
Connect you HH with your desktop Manager in your PC. If you device is set to wireless sync then you need to turn off wireless synchronization. To do so go to Address Book -> click Menu -> Options -> Wireless Synchronization: No -> click Menu and Save the changes.
Click on the Synchronize button on Desktop Manager -> Click on Configuration Tab then click on Configure Synchronization -> Click on Choose under Address Book (on the right side of the pop up window) -> Click on you organizer apps (like, MS outlook, Lotus notes etc) -> Select desired apps -> select Synchronization radio button and click OK twice go back to Synchronize tab ->click on Synchronize Now.
