Player compatability

I have been a Final Cut Pro user for five years and recently started a freelance film and video production company. I need to be able to deliver consistent quality with my services. Recently I encountered an issue of "DVD player compatibility" with clientele. Some clients are able to watch the DVD's that I burn on iDVD5, while others can't watch them at all. Some experience glitches, some can't play any media. I've heard that others suffer from this enigmatic issue, so I am wondering how do you solve this perplexity? I am using a new G5 Power Mac 10.3.9 with a Superdrive and Final Cut Pro 3.0. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you for your time. P

Peter:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. It's generally agreed upon that the slower the burn the more compatible the resulting disc will be. I'm locked into 1X burning due to the drive I have but have not had a single player issue with any of my discs. Do a search for recommended discs (or disks) and you'll find a number of users with good suggestions. If you can stick to 4X or less you'll have the best success.
One DVD guru, Len Goff, has some very advice. Check out this list of his posts for his recommendations.
It is recommended that you do not put paper labels on the discs. It's far better, and more professional to print your labels on printable discs. I use an Epson R200 for that. There are a number of Epson printers that have that capability. The discs I use for that are the 4X RITEK DVD-R 2.7G PRINTABLE which I get in bulk from www.shop4gtech.com. I got them on Len's recommendation.
Hope this has been of some help. Good luck.

  • Player compatibility problem with dual layer media

    I've created a dual layer DVD and there is a problem with compatibility from player to player.
    It plays fine in one of my DVD players but will not load in the other.
    The duplicators tested my master on 2 players and it loaded on both, but would lock up if a chapter was selected from the submenu.
    It has 4 tracks of content. 3 menus, and a bunch of chapter markers. The original build had stories (replaced with standard chapter markers) but I removed them hoping it would solve the problem.
    The imported video tracks were created with Compressor. MPEG-2 2 pass VBR max bit rate 7.5. AC3 audio tracks. 7.7 GB on disc.
    I'm already way over my deadline and ahve no idea what to do next other than maybe recompress so the disc is not so close to being maxed out.

    Thats just how compatible that media is... +R DL (double layer) & -R DL are not that compatible. Recordable media is less compatible that replicated discs but double and dual layer media can be 50% compatible at best (depending on your target market...)
    Good quality media, Verbatim +R DL for example burnt at slow speeds helps improve things,

  • Player Compatability Issues

    I exported a SD video (about an hour and 20 minutes) from Final Cut Pro as a self-contained QT movie and imported it into iDVD. It took 1.5-2 hrs to compress and encode in iDVD. I tried it on 2 dvd players and it would play a little and pause on its own. I tried it on my macbook pro and it played a little and kept crashing the DVD Player on the mac. The disc was a DVD-R from Comp USA.
    1. Can discs encoded from iDVD generally be expected to play in most home players these days? OR do you need to move up to DVD Studio Pro to make sure they play?
    2. If it was a disc issue, what types of discs are best for making sure they will play in most home players.
    3. Are there any other settings in iDVD I should be aware of for making sure the disk has the best change of playing in home players?
    Thanks!!!!

    Disk quality and slow burn speed are probably the two most important issues as far as compatability goes.
    Maxell and Verbatim have the best track record here. For best results, they should be burned at 4x or slower. With iDVD 6 the only way to reduce the burn speed is to create a disk image file out of iDVD (an option under FILE). You can play the disk image with Apple's DVD Player application to insure it is OK and then burn the disk image file to writable media with Apple's Disk Utility (which allows you to reduce the burn speed) or Roxio's Toast Titanium (also allows burn speed control) if you have it.
    FWIW, I have used CompUSA DVDs for tests - but ONLY the 1x versions burned at 1x.

  • Creative mp3 player compatibility with PFS car au

    I was wondering if the "Plays For Sure" compatible Creative Players will work with the PFS compatible car audio receivers from Kenwood and Alpine. I'm mostly wondering about my Zen Xtra, but I'm sure others would like to know if their players would work also. Is Creative pursuing testing this, or should I just assume that all PFS works with all other PFS?

    I purchased music from iTunes, but there is one
    problem, I can't play it on my Creative Zen Vision
    MP3 player.
    Yes, you are right.
    I even burned a CD with
    the music, and it won't play on my car stereo??
    You must burn a CD-Audio to play it in your home/car stereo.
    If you also want to play those songs on your Creative player, once you've done the CD-Audio you can rip it again in MP3.

  • Is there a fix for a Flash Player compatibility problem?.

    My computer is a imac g4 1.25 Ghz 17 inch flat panel running OS X 10.4.11 and can no longer view anything on the internet that uses the newest version of flash player.  I have tried to upgrade to that version but it won't work on my computer. When I try to download it I get this message "Devices with powerpc processors are no longer supported." Is there a fix for this?

    You can check here:  http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/  to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS. Note that version 10,1,102,64 is the last version available to PPC Mac users*. The latest version, 10.2.152.25, 10.3.x beta, or later, is for Intel Macs only, as Adobe no longer support the PPC platform. Version 11.0.1.152 is for Lion.
    * Unhelpfully, if you want the last version for PPC Macs, you need to go here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html  and scroll down to 'Archived Versions/Older Archives'. The first one on the list, Flash Player 10.1.102.64 is the one you download. More information here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/838/cpsid_83808.html
    You should first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/909/cpsid_90906.html
    and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications first before installing. You must also carry out a permission repair after installing anything from Adobe.
    (If you are running a PPC Mac with Flash Player 10.1.102.64 and are having problems with watching videos on FaceBook or other sites, contributor Texas Mac Man suggests the following solution which fools the site into thinking that you are running the latest version:)
    Download this http://www.steelbin.com/FPforFBPPC.zip to your desktop, unzip it, and replace the current Flash Player plug-in which is in your main/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, (not the user Library). Save the old one just in case this one doesn't work.
    It works for me.

  • FCP TO DVD STUDIO 3 - DVD PLAYER COMPATABILITY

    I've created dvd that plays on home dvd but not another one at work. Is there a configuration key, something universal that will work with all players?
    ACtually, the video plays on both but I am unable to get the start menu, which in this case, is critical.
    Thanks.

    In general, I have had the best compatibility luck with a variety of players by using DVD-R (8x) blank media.
    Not sure what you mean by a start menu. Do you mean the main menu, or the first play (the thing that auto plays when you insert the disc)?
    What happens when you insert the disc in eack of the two scenarios?

  • Encore 2.0 Audio and DVD Player Compatibility

    Hello
    I've made about 200 dvd's for a dance recital I've edited. This is my first year using 2.0 and have already had 2 people come back saying all they can hear is the applause track, and no music (in premiere, I had an audio timeline with just music from the soundboard, and one timeline for a stage mic to catch tapdances and applause). Once premiere renders the audio, I assumed it would all become one track in encore, which it appears to be. I looked in the settings, and it appears to have defaulted to dolby audio. Is this going to be a big problem? I'm not sure what encore 1.0 defaulted to for audio. I've tested my dvd's on my own stand-alone dvd player and it works fine.
    Thanks for any input.

    Thanks for writing back. I did burn at 4x, and used TDK media (which I assumed was ok)...in the past 2 years that I've done this project, I used encore 1.0 with no problems (other than the standard +R vs -R problems).
    I'll check the data rate, but I think it was well below the 7,000 level. I was just curious as to why certain dvd players would screen out the main track?..which is odd since there are only 2 assets in the project (besides menus) "audio" and "video", one each on the main timeline. How do you output your videos in encore 2? Do you use pcm or dolby digital?
    Thanks again.

  • Mac/Firefox/Adobe Flash Player compatability problems

    Hi I have an old Mac OS 10.6.8 and just did an undate for Firefox.  Now I cannot play anything without receiving a notice thay update is needed.  I have attempted this multiple times.  All I can find on the web is that Adobe Flashplaer 11 is not compatable with anything more than OS 10.3.  I want it to work, I tried a different route  I changed my download options that you suggest.  I selected OS 10.6 and Adobe 11.  I redownloaded and it still does not work.  I just want to put it all back like it was before and I am now geeting the warning using Safari as well!  Please help.

  • Portable DVD Player Compatable with iPod touch?

    Does anyone know of a portable DVD player compatible with iPod touch that has a reasonable battery life? Philips makes a portable DVD player - the DCP 851 - that has an iPod touch dock, but the battery life is only 2.5 hrs. There are several other portable DVD players out there with substantially longer battery lives (Panasonic has one with a 13 hr. battery life), but generally they don't seem to be compatible with an iPod (most appear to only have A/V input through a mini jack, and I can't seem to find an iPod-to-mini jack converter). Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    It will only require that you change the security and password on your other devices. Apple devices work much better with WPA, and WPA is far more secure than WEP.
    It should be relatively simple to re-configure the router's wireless security to use WPA2 or WPA Personal security. WPA passwords do not require any special characters like WEP does. Once you re-configure the router all you need do is make the appropriate changes in your other devices to use WPA security and enter the new password.

  • Quick Time Player compatibility

    I am receiving videos from cell phones, but receive a compatibility error when trying to open the video.  Please help!

    Yes, color correcting is not a thing of the past.
    I'm currently implementing a linear workflow with color correction for the other 3D modeling and compositing tools I use - spending a lot of time reading and trying to get my head around how to do it properly.
    (even the www.linearworkflow.com guy seems to have difficulty working out all the details sometimes http://media.fxguide.com/fxpodcast/fxg-090927-linearlight.mp3 )
    Not sure if a linear workflow is even possible with FCP (didn't find any threads on it), but for filters, would certainly be nice to add two 128's (20%) and have them not blow out at 255 (100%!
    As for my working color space, I'd like to work in ProPhoto RGB which offers some advantages over Adobe RGB.
    As to the target medium, BluRay, DVD, H.264 Web (all of which obviously will no doubt require different settings).
    I just noticed that QT7 displays 3rd party mov videos I've purchased for integration in my own as much darker than QT10. No matter what the FCP compatibility setting is on.
    And the HDMI monitor calibrated with the SMTPE color charts and 'blue-only' also looks a bit different.
    So, working with FCP with Snow Leopard is a bit confusing (at least for me) at the moment.

  • Flash Player Compatibility Problem

    I am setting up my old G4 (OS 9.2.2) computer for my daughter to get online for games, etc. In order to view some of the websites, I need the latest version of Flash. We're using Internet Explorer 5.1 because I'm not sure if I can upgrade with this OS. According to the website, Flash 8 and 9 are not compatible with Mac classic operating systems. I also have a G5 and OS X. The installation disks that came with the G5 seem specific to the G5. I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to make the G4 work for our purposes. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi, boilerfan -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
    Flash 7 is the last version that can be used in OS 9. If you need to use a later version, you will need to upgrade the G4 to OSX. In order to do that there are a few things to consider...
    You will need to know the specific Apple designation for your G4. This Apple KBase article can help you identify it -
    Article #58418 - Power Mac G4: How to Differentiate Between Models
    • Firmware. If the machine is a G4 (Digital Audio) or earlier model, it should have its firmware updated if that has not already been done. You can check its current firmware version easily - open Apple System Profiler, and on the tab System Profile scroll down to the section Production Information. Look at the info on the line labelled "Boot ROM version:" - if that states $0004.28f5, the firmware version is 4.2.8, which is current for those models; if that number is lower, then the firmware should be updated. You can download the 4.2.8 updater from here -
    Article #120068 - G4 Firmware Update 4.2.8
    • RAM. OSX requires more RAM as a minimum than does OS 9. OSX 10.3 and earlier require 128MB as a minimum; 256MB is a more realistic minimum. OSX 10.4 requires 256MB RAM as a minimum; 512MB is more realistic.
    • Hard drive space. A normal install of OSX 10.3 or 10.4 will need about 3GB of drive space. This can be reduced quite a lot by choosing to not install all language versions; you can instruct the installer to not install all language versions during the install process. In addition, OSX runs best when there is at least 5GB of free space for it to use (it uses this for its version of Virtual Memory, temporary files, and defragging on the fly).
    • Source. The OSX install disks from your G5 are not usable on the G4 - they are model-specific to the G5. You would need to acquire a retail package of OSX; the retail packages include a universal installer. If your G4 is a G4 (DA) or earlier model, it can use any version of OSX released to date. However, the later versions of OSX are more stable and run faster than the earlier ones do, so your choices would be either 10.3 (Panther) or OSX 10.4 (Tiger). Apple no longer sells Panther, but you can get Tiger from the Apple Store as well as from other sources.
    Note - the version of Tiger sold by Apple is on DVD only. This requires that the machine it is to be installed on must have an optical drive which can boot to DVDs. Not all G4s have that. At one time Apple offered a disk swap, where the DVDs could be exchanged for CDs; this program has been discontinued. However, you can still get both Panther and Tiger on CDs from sources like -
    http://store.yahoo.com/hardcoremac/index.html
    EBay is another possibility.
    Regardless of the source, be sure to get a retail disk set - the retail packages have a universal installer; model-specific disks do not.

  • Itunes &windows media player compatability

    I use WMP and used to burn cds. I then installed itunes and while I can still burn cds using the same "d" drive using itunes I can no longer get WMP to recognise that drive and cd burner. Is it possible that by installing itunes it has overridden the possibility that WMP can use the same drive to burn cds.
    Many thanks
    Brian

    This microsoft link should help:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316992
    WMP does not convert audio files, though the Windows Media Encoder found here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/encoder/default.mspx
    will work-at least with WAV files. Of course iTunes has been able to convert files to wav for quite awhile.
    From this document:
    https://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/codecs/comparison.aspx
    you can see that Microsoft would prefer WMP users use WMA Pro as an alternative to AAC files.

  • Trying to find out which line of AS2 code is causing flash player crash in firefox & chrome browser

    Hello,
    I have a flash movie (AS2) created for the website visitors' registration and this flash movie is longer in size than the browser's window height so that site visitors need to browse down using browser's vertical scroll bar to see all of the contents in the flash movie.
    When users click the submit button in the flash movie then
    Firstly, the AS2 code attached to the      on(release){    event scrolls the html page back to the top (because the user must have scrolled down to view the flash movie content at the bottom of the page and I want the html page to go back to the top of the page)
    getURL("javascript:window.scroll(0,0)");    // this is the AS2 code I have used for scrolling the page back to the top. I suspect this code is causing the flash player crash in firefox and google chrome
    and also tells the _root of the flash movie to go to and stop at a frame named "StartEnteringData".
    _root.gotoAndStop("StartEnteringData")     //making the _root of the movie to go to the "StartEnteringData" frame
    this.gotoAndStop("Start")                                  //making this movieclip which contains the registation form to go to the first blank frame labelled "Start"
    The "StartEnteringData" frame on the _root of the flash movie has AS2 code for entering the registration data to the database by using loadVariablesNum( ... )
    Here's my question.
    Almost everytime the user/visitor click the Submit button, the firefox browser users and google chrome browswer users see the Flash Player CRASH...
    This doesn't happen often with the website visitors using MS Internet Explorer.
    I have read some www articles (by searching google) saying that Adobe Flash Player in Firefox and Chrome browsers crash a lot.
    But, for my flash movie, everytime the visitor clicks the submit button, flash player crashes. Therefore, I guess it is the AS2 code that I'm using (associated with the on(release) event of the submit button) is causing the flash player crash rather then the flash player compatibility with Firefox and Chrome browsers.
    So, someone please tell me what's causing the flash player crash.
    Is there a better code to make a web page to go back to the top?
    I am also using the codes shown below on the first keyframe of the main movie. (_root)
    //For custom flash right click menu:
    var myMenu_cm:ContextMenu = new ContextMenu();
    myMenu_cm.builtInItems.zoom = true;
    myMenu_cm.builtInItems.quality = false;
    myMenu_cm.builtInItems.print = false;
    myMenu_cm.builtInItems.save = false;
    myMenu_cm.builtInItems.loop = false;
    myMenu_cm.builtInItems.rewind = false;
    myMenu_cm.builtInItems.play = false;
    myMenu_cm.builtInItems.forward_back = false;
    _root.menu = myMenu_cm;
    //For tiling the flash movie background with bitmap picture
    import flash.display.BitmapData;
    var tile:BitmapData = BitmapData.loadBitmap("pattern");
    this.beginBitmapFill(tile);
    this.lineTo(Stage.width, 0);
    this.lineTo(Stage.width, Stage.height);
    this.lineTo(0, Stage.height);
    this.lineTo(0, 0);
    this.endFill();

    by repeatedly commenting out lines of code you suspect are causing the crush and retesting you should be able to pinpoint the problem.

  • Burned dvd plays on Mac but not on player

    my burned dvd plays on my Mac with no problems but on my dvd player, it just stops after 3 few seconds. any ideas what happened there?
    i used iDvd 4

    Welcome to the Forum.
    The most likely reason for consumer DVD players to skip or stop on DVDs that play well in computer DVD drives, are excessive burn errors that the consumer players 'choke on'. All burned media (CD and DVD) has burn errors. Burning at lower speeds tends to reduce the error level, hence the recommendation to burn low-speed media for maximum player compatability. Computer DVD drives have a high level of error correction (after all - you wouldn't want to loose any data on a data DVD) and can handle the errors. Consumer DVD players don't - after all they are designed to playback pressed DVDs with low error rates.
    Some consumer DVD players are more sensitive to these errors than others.
    Sometimes using a different brand of media will help.

  • Burning more than one movie

    If I burn a 10-minute movie to DVD-R or DVD+R can I later burn another 10 minute move to the same DVD on the leftover space?

    No. iDVD "closes" every "session."
    Use Verbatim DVD-R for player compatibility.
