Playing 16:9 dvd from a TS folder on Apple TV

Lets say for the sake of argument I have an unprotected DVD. Want to load it on to a network drive connected to a 10/100 port on the new Airport Extreme. Can this be played back on the Apple TV in the native 16;9 format?
Do you have to import it into iTunes first?
If so, how does it look? As nice as it would if played on a DVD player or not?

The movie has to be streamed from iTunes or actually on the AppleTv.
While you can stream movies from iTunes that reside on an external drive or network drive (linked files not stored in the iTunes library), they have to be in a format that AppleTV supports:
Video formats supported
* H.264 and protected H.264 (from iTunes Store): Up to 5 Mbps, Progressive Main Profile (CAVLC) with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 1280 by 720 pixels at 24 fps, 960 by 540 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats
* iTunes Store purchased video: 320 by 240 pixels or 640 by 480 pixels
* MPEG-4: Up to 3 Mbps, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 720 by 432 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats
Audio formats supported
* AAC (16 to 320 Kbps); protected AAC (from iTunes Store); MP3 (16 to 320 Kbps); MP3 VBR; Apple Lossless; AIFF; WAV
You would basically need to convert the DVD to one of these formats using something like Handbrake or MPEGStreamclip. Encoding is rarely real time speed, and often much slower.
Some movie files will play in iTunes but not AppleTV and you can do a convert to iTunes format via iTunes but it takes a long time.
Also, digital surround is not implemented on AppleTV so you can kiss goodbye any 5 channel soundtracks for now. Some audio only 5.1 channel files will work but I've not yet seen a movie that does.
With regards to network drive, some people use them and they work, others have bandwidth problems. USB/Firewire drives linked to a Mac/PC are better but it all depends on what sort of computer you have as some older ones just can't keep up.
With regards to network drives being slow, you have to think of the data path - the more steps the slower:
- on AppleTV = fastest
- computer > Apple TV via ethernet next best in general
- computer > Apple TV via wireless next (assume same wireless speeds)
- computer > router > AppleTV ethernet or wireless
- network drive > router > computer iTunes> router > AppleTv
and so forth.
Depending on what kit you have there are other media centres available. Freecom have some nice looking offerings from barebones to 500GB storage.

  • Why can't I play DVDs from my mac to my Apple TV

I can't play a DVD from my iMac to my Apple TV, why and what can I do to fix this

If you own the DVD, why not use HandBrake or something similar to rip to your iTunes library?  Then you WOULD be able to play to your AppleTV with no issues.

I'm afraid this is by design.
You cannot Airplay Mirror a DVD using DVD Player - Apple block  screen mirroring of certain image data which might be protected.
I've a funny feeling Airplay mirroring can potentially be interecpted and decoded so someone could potentially copy the video stream (which would be poorer than DVD anyway).

  • Burn a dvd from a VIDEO_TS  folder

Hi all, this is sily, i have done this before i know i have, i cannot do it now !
I have a Folder named VIDEO_TS on my hard drive, it contains the contents of a video that i want to burn onto a DVD DL disc
So far today i have wasted 4 disc's trying 4 different programs, including Burn and Terminal, but nothing works.
the video plays fine on my Lap Top.
I just dont understand why i am struggling. i have even tried a Windows program "imgburn" but still no good
i dont mind buying an App for the job, but which one. I do not want to waste any more disc's, they aint cheap !.

You need video authoring burn software; I use either Roxio Toast or iDVD:
It is no longer included with the OS, but you can buy a retail version of iLife 11 (or 09 for that matter) from online retailers; it contains iDVD - in my humble opinion, the very best burn software because of its' customizable menus and themes. You can make your masterpiece. I don't know how it would work since you already have a Video_TS folder (which is what you can create with iDVD), so you can't go backwards. In this case, Roxio Toast is the best idea (but no customizable or snazzy menus). I do not have the Pro version - I tried the blu-ray plugin and tested it; could not see a difference on my HDTV, so I decided to burn as close to HD as I could (camera shoots video in 1920X1080p) and forego the expensive blu-ray disks.
For future use, I'd recommend looking into iDVD as well:

  • HT3180 When trying to play itunes and slideshows from my Mac book to Apple TV the small icon on the bottom right of the screen which switches between Computer and Apple TV doesn't always show up, and therefore the function doesn't work.  What's up?

We are trying to play playlists and a slideshow from an Apple Macbook wirelessly to the Apple TV.  The small, upward arrow icon that appears on the bottom right of the screen (which allows you to pick Computer or Apple TV) doesn't always show up, and therefore, we can't get it to work.  Any thoughts?

Airplay mirroring software will not work with anything below Mountain Lion 10.8 and an Apple computer from 2011 or newer.

    1. What OS X version you are running

  • HT1532 can i play videos & tv shows from an iPhone & iPad on apple tv?

Am I able to airplay any and all videos and streamed from apps TV shows

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can certainly stream video from the video app on your devices. You can also stream video from many other apps, but not all. There are some providers such as Sky GO or HBO GO, that deliberately block AirPlay.

    About AirPlay and Airplay Mirroring
AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). For non-qualifying Macs you can try using Air Parrot.

  • I transferred photos from my camera to my computer and created a burn folder.  I recorded the burn folder on a DVD but it will not play on my DVD player.  What am I doing wrong?

I transferred photos from my camera to  burn folder on my macbook Pro.  Made a DVD from the burn folder but it will not play on my DVD player.  What am I doing wrong?

How did you do this burn? Did you use a program like iDVD?  A DVD player requires that the data on the DVD is recorded in the proper format: MPEG-2.  A program like iDVD will do this.  There are other programs available that can do the proper coding (Roxio 'Toast' for example), but iDVD has the most features and is easy to use.  It is no longer available from Apple, but if you search on Amazon, you can find 'iLife 11', a suite of programs including iDVD.  It will function properly on Apple's current operating system, but it cannot make a High-Definition (Blue-Ray) presentation.  It is Standard Definition only, as are all regular DVD's. One good way to present photos on a TV is to make a slidesow in iPhoto, then export that slideshow to iDVD, where it will be properly formatted for a DVD player.  Or, iDVD can make its own slideshow of up to 99 photos.  HTH.

  • Playing DVD from Mac to Apple TV

    Hi there,
I recently purchased Apple TV and would like to know if it is possible to view  my wedding film on dvd from my mac to my apple tv.
When i turn on Apple TV Airplay mirroring the screen on my mac and my TV is grey and white checkered and it won't play, only sound.
Everything else like home sharing works fine.
    Appreciate any advice

Apple have crippled Airplay assuming you are trying to send copy protected content.
    Two options:
1 - Use another DVD capable player eg VLC
2 - Assuming the DVD video is not protected, Google the free Handbrake and convert the DVD video footage to AppleTV compatible h264 (there are presets). Add the video to iTunes - it will go to Movies under Unknown Genre - right click and use Get info and adjust metadata.  Handbrake will only handle video conversion not menus.

  • Burned DVD plays on some DVD players and not others

    Hello all,
First, please forgive my ignorance because I do not work with video much and have no idea what I'm doing. Someone created a video that I need to burn so the DVD can play on any DVD player. The folder is titled "VIDEO_TS" and then the files within it have the following extensions: .BUP, .IFO, .VOB. with VIDEO and VTS as the prefixes. the largest file has a .VOB extension. The master disk is a DVD-R and I burned the video on a Verbatim DVD-R which played fine on my MAc, a PC and two DVD players. However, I tried it on two other DVD players and it could not be played. So now I'm trying to figure out how I can created a DVD that will be compatible with any DVD player or create an alternate version that can be played on the machines that currently can't play the DVD.
Does all of that make sense? I've been all over the internet and seen different suggestions for similar problems but I don't want to spend money or waste time trying different tactics that won't solve my problem.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi
This is a question very familiar in iDVD forum. I use to answer like this.
    • Brand of DVD used matters - I only use Verbatim (more organic dye in these) - but there are other GOOD Brands
    • DVD-R - plays on more DVD-players than DVD+R as it plays on even older DVD-players (DVD+/-RW - don't even think of it)
    • BURN SPEED - is a major contributor to this problem - I never go faster than x4 - I use as standard x2
There are two kinds a blanc DVD can be burned as
    • DATA-DVD - Files from DeskTop just stored on a blank DVD - few DVD-players can play this (only very very new ones and they are rare - if I'm rightly informed)
    • Video-DVD - a DVD-authoring program is a MUST. iDVD, DVD-Studio Pro, Burn, Roxio Toast etc etc
I'm told that Compressor can do this - I never got it to deliver a Playable-DVD - BUT THIS IS DUE TO MY NEGLECT !
So when iDVD or Toast creates this very special structured DVD - You find the two (must be there) folders VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS (empty) - and if the DVD-player don't find this = it will not play.
Yours - very happy with iDVD and Toast (and DVD-Studio Pro - but this is hard to get right) - Bengt W

  • 8 cm dvd from video camcorder

Since it is not recommended to put an 8 cm dvd into a slot loading dvd drive, can it be saved as a file that my iMac can read (quicktime or ?) if I open it on my wife's laptop, which is running windows 7?

Can iMacs play 8 cm dvd from video cameras?
Only if put into a tray-loading drive. If one is put into a slot-loading drive, it may become stuck.

  • What Mac models will play a HD DVD ?

I tried to playback a HD DVD (1080i, 50Hz, Mpeg2, compressor preset,) that I've made on several different mac computers. So far I've only been able to play back on machines where some version of FCP, FCP Express or FCS 5 resides.
Is HD DVD playback restricted to these machines only, or is it hardware limitation factors that prevents me from playing this baby on my Mac Mini ?
I have to stuff 130 min. of 1080i into a single build to Hard drive and then playback from there.
Any help would be deeply appreciated

Well I have to confess that after studying older posts i stumbled on this little tidbit which throws a different kind of light on the matter:

According to Apple, G4s are out of luck, but they might just be playing it safe on their sys requirements:

    Apple DVD Player 4.6
