Playing 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 software instruments at the same time

in older days, if you clicked on 3 programs in the sequencer like track 1,2 and 3 which made them blink on an Ensoniq TS10
you heard all three instruments at the same time which allowed for quite a nice sound. Other companies im sure had this feature. This was great for live playing as you had lots of combinations of SI/programs to experiment with. It seems GB when played live only plays one of the SI at a time. Am i wrong here? wouldnt it be nice if we could hit track one with piano, then double click track 2 with a synth pad, then the same with track 3 with a flute combine their sounds and depending on the RAM & processor speed ( ive got tons ) one could hear live the combination of multiple si and sf2's. this should be on GB 3.1 when i play at home live i should be able to hear the combination of sounds not just one of them

Drag the software instrument(s) into the timeline. Just clicking on a si loop in the browser window is for previewing the si. You can change the length of the loops by grabbing the right edge of the loop and dragging it.
Play around with GB and read the Help files.

I am trying to record a vocal mic and a keyboard (using a software instrument) at the same time using Garageband 10.0.1. It seems that I can't record the mic input and the software instrument at the same time. I can record the mic input by itself, and I can record the software instrument by itself (if I don't have a mic input track created), but I can't record them together.
It seems like this should be an obvious thing to be able to do, but I can't figure out how to make it work.
Can someone help?

Is there anyway to record a live audio track while recording the drum track with the ES-Blah blah blah? i can never remember the number.

Hi guys, need help regarding Realtek HD audio driver
I want to play stereo mix music and sing in my mic at the same time.... not for recording purposes but in chatroom let's say.
I'm using XP...Toshiba Satellite S4747 laptop
In the Realtek software under " Realtek HD audio input" I have mic and stereo mix both.... but I can only select one at a time.....
Any solutions plzzz thxxxx
On a different note.... a friend of mine whose using one non-Toshiba laptop with win XP has an older version of the Realtek audio driver and can select both mic and stereo mix at the same time... I downloaded that version into my laptop but I still can only select one at a time....

Check the audio settings in Windows and dont forget in Realtek HD audio manager. You can find it in control panel.
I think your microphone is set to mute so check this.

Can Express 9 play and record multiple instruments at the same time?

I have logic express 9 and was told with my interface that I can play and record different instruments at the same time on Express 9. Is this true because I have spent a long time trying to figure out how.

to record multiple Inputs at a time, open up the appropriate number of audio tracks. Now for each track, select the correct Input in the Channelstrip.
Now, ARM all these tracks for recording by clicking the little red R in the track header or channelstrip. Now if you hit record, all these tracks should record simultaneously their respective inputs.
All other existing tracks should playback while recording.

Labview runs CANBus and DNP3 software model at the same time

I have an ordinary computer which communicates with several DSPs (CANBus communiation) through Compact Rio. The physical connection is that the DSPs' CANBuses are connected together and connected into Compact Rio, then the Compact Rio is connected with a router through Ethernet, at the same time, the computer also connects with the Router through Ethernet. Based on this physical architecture, the computer can run CANBus software model on Labview to communiate with Compact Rio and DSPs.
As I know, the communication between the computer and the Compact Rio is not real time, and the communication between Compact Rio and DSPs can be real time, can you tell me if I get the right point?
Now we have another device named RTDS (communicate with outside through Enternet based on DNP3), and want to add RTDS into our system. I am not sure about the way to conduct the communiation. The main question is that we need to run Labview to communicate with DSPs through CANBus and RTDS through DNP3 at the same time, is that possible?
I proposed two possible ways to conduct communication, bt not sure if it is possible.
1. I proposed that I connect RTDS with the Router through Ethernet, and then the computer communicates with RTDS through the Router based on DNP3 and also keeps the communication with DSPs through Router, Compact Rio, CANBus and then DSPs. I am wondering if this kind of communication is available for Labview.
2. The second possible way I proposed is that I connect the RTDS with Compat Rio (CRio keeps connecting with DSPs through CANBus) through Ethernet, and then the computer communicates with DSPs through Router, Compact Rio and CANBus, and the computer communicates with RTDS through Router, Compact Rio and Ethernet. Also, the computer needs to run Labview with CANBus sofeware model and DNP3 software model at the same time. I am also not sure if it is possible.

To use Mail from multiple devices, your Mail Server needs to be using IMAP protocol (iCloud Mail uses that).
IMAP keeps the Master copies on the Server, not on the Mac the way most default POP Mail servers do.
To keep one Master Calendar, accessible from all devices, you need a web-accessible place to keep the Master Calendar. iCloud can do that.

Play two instruments at the same time?

I'm stuck with GarageBand right now, where I can only play one instrument at a time. Preferably I want to play both (for example) piano and strings using one real-time MIDI input. Is it possible to do that with either Logic Express or Pro?

Do you mean play the same thing at once with two instrumets simultaneously playing two different sounds?

ITunes no longer runs since buying Match. Within ten seconds of opening, it crashes, everytime. Firewall off, latest version of iTunes reinstalled, Windows updates/etc. on, no other software running at the same time. Error-report just says reinstall.

I can no longer use iTunes whatsoever.
I'm hoping to get a refund for the $25 wasted on match if my PC isn't compatible. But how the **** do I get iTunes as a whole to stop crashing?
I'm on Windows 7 with AMD C-50 processor and 2GB RAM, 250GB hard disc.
Never had an issue with Apple products before today.
Windows error reporting claims that "an update to iTunes addresses the issue", but not only did I have 10.5.3 already, I went ahead and reinstalled it, too, and the 64bit version just for the **** of it in case that'd make difference. No luck.
I mean, surely, the fact that this is only happening to me means it is a problem with my system. But I don't suppose its the usual stuff that way, way inexperienced computer users end up on these forums about. No viruses (are there PC viruses that only affect iTunes match? sounds far fetched.) No firewall issues. Not running outdated software. I imagine its my CPU, my hardware, thats just not compatible with Match.
Anyways. The crash occurs about 20% into the progress bar of gathering info about your library for match. When restarting, it asks to log off and log back in to the itunes store. A few times I was able to do that, by getting to the little X and cutting off match before it could crash (still logging out and logging back in made no difference), but now the speed at which it gets to the 20% and crashes is so fast I can't beat it to it.
Do you suppose the Apple store at the mall, since I just got a 4S with Apple Care+ might be able to help me, or would there be a fee? I can't afford a new computer right now, and if mine just could never work with match period, might I get a refund?

How big is your library? I would recommend the following troubleshooting steps:
- Backup your library. Always a good idea before messing with things.
- Create a new library.   Refer to this article for details: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1589. This won't delete your old library, you're just creating a new empty one. Also refer to this article to get back to your old library later.
- Add a few albums into this new library. Not everything, just a small sampling, as a test.
- Activate Match on this new library. You shouldn't have to re-pay, it should just say "Add Computer" or similar.
- At this point, Match should run again. With just a few albums it should complete in just a few minutes.
If iTunes doesn't crash at this point, then likely there's something about your original library that Match doesn't like - what that is I don't know, but at least you'll know it's not your PC.   If iTunes still crashes, then if could be a number of other things, but probably not your library.   My next suggestion (if you haven't already done this) is to uninstall / reinstall iTunes.   If that doesn't work, then my next ideas you won't like.

Can you play two different MIDI instruments at the same time in Garageband?

I searched for a while but failed to find an answer so far: can Garageband allow you to play two tracks with two different midi instruments? When I plug my two keyboards, the 2 MIDI sources are recognized, but can only play notes on one track, not two different tracks! Is this a known limitation?
If Garageband can't play 2 midi instruments on 2 different tracks, I guess that leaves me with Logic Express...

Correct. GB doesn't differentiate between midi channels, that's why you can't split them to two tracks (and GB only offers one recording channel for midi at a time).

Can iTunes play 2 different songs on 2 different airport express at the same time?

I am trying to setup a multi zone home audio system where iTunes will be the main source of music. I would like to be able to listen to different music in multiple zones at the same time and I am trying to find out if iTunes can support this or not. I know there are "multi zone audio systems" that can be purchases from different companies (elan, Russound, Control4, etc) but I want to see if this functionality exists within Apple hardware before purchasing a different system.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

using two TV's you could do what you want. you'd have to select the content to stream on the units themselves or use Apple's remote app on an iDevice.

Can you play multiple movies in keynote on the ipad2 at the same time?

I have an ipad2 with keynote, and am trying to play my presentatin with 2 movies on one page at the same time. But it only seems to be able to play one movie and then you have to tap the next movie to get it to play. Now I have set up the build to play with the other movie and it works fine on the MacBook Pro, but on the ipad it refuses to work. Anyone know how to resolve this? Also keynote doe'nt seem to support video borders.......

I'm using two MacPros simultaniously, the old one for iTunes, and the new one for the other things. My new one has no problems, so am wondering if there is an easy way to correct the older MacPro's contrast problems. The computer is over three years old, and I'm wondering also if this failure is an aging sign. (I also have other problems, such as a noisy DVD drive, which is part of the reason I bought a new MacBook Pro.)

Is the older MBP a pre-Unibody model from early 2008? If so, it could be having this problem:

If so, you would be entitled to a free repair.
The lost contrast could be considered distorted video.
Do you have an external monitor? If the external shows the same lost contrast, the graphics chip is likely the culprit. If the external is OK, then you probably have an issue with the built in display or possibly with its connections.
You may also want to check in Universal Access to see if the contrast bar is set in its normal position (all the way to the left).
Apple has a special test they can run to diagnose the NVIDIA issue, so if you have access to an Apple Store, make an appointment at the genius bar to have it run.

Can't play MIDI the same time as any other sound.

I am a bass player and therefore I use GTick from [extra] as a metronome and TuxGuitar from [community] as GuitarPro tablature reader. I have a problem with (at least) this two programs: when I try to start the metronome or to play a tablature, I get error messages if any sound is playing, no matter if it is Amarok playing music, or TuxGuitar playing a tablature.
For non-musicians, a GuitarPro tablature is a transcription of a song which can be played through MIDI at the same time as you can see the partiture, or the notes played on an image of a guitar neck or a keyboard.
This happens every time I want to play some MIDI from this two apps: if I have a tablature open with TuxGuitar I can't play another tablature on another instance of TuxGuitar, or even start GTick to play alone with the metronome. I have to close TuxGuitar and start GTick, or open the other tablature in the same instance of TuxGuitar, which is annoying when, for example, trying to compare two tablatures of the same song.
This makes me think that my system can't play any MIDI when some other sound is playing, but I don't know any other MIDI apps to try. Any ideas on how to setup multiple MIDI playing? I've read on the Wiki [1] that it was necessary to enable dmix some time ago to allow multiple programs play sound at once, but this is not necessary since ALSA 1.0.9rc2, and I have alsa-lib 1.0.17a-1.

Macbook Pro: Play and record sound at the same time

Greetings everyone,
My brother and I have are going to switch go a mac, preferebly to a macbook pro. we used windows so far, but the frustration has grown extremely huge, so it's time to throw off this junk.
We've been working with sound a lot and many times we recorded any sound which played through the computer: that means sound and music from dvds and games or other sources, we couldn't get anywhere else. What we did is simply letting the game or dvd play and record the audio at the same time.
I've testet this functionality in windows via bootcamp on a macbook of friend of mine, but NOT the macbook pro version. It's wasn't really that good as I thought. Sound quality was below what I'd expect.
So here are my questions:
- Does the macbook pro have a better sound card, which enables simultaneos play + record?
- Is good record quality bound to a software I need to use?

Apple don't have separate "sound cards" like PC's , Martin. The necessary hardware is proprietary , and built into the logic boards.
Both of them have high quality combined optical digital input and audio line in, and combined optical digital output and audio line out. You can also attach various USB or firewire audio input and output devices if you wish. So as far as 'quality" goes, it depends what you are playing them through more than anything else. The inherent audio abilities of both are pretty danged good when using Mac specific software. That is why the music industry love 'em!
Or are you just talking about sound quality through the built in speakers, which are, of course severely limited by the amount of space available, though I've heard far worse from many PC notebooks!?
