Playing a game with NO disk drive?

I recently downloaded Sims 3 on my 11 inch Macbook Air via File Sharing. Now... the only issue is that it will not play unless the disk is inserted... Problem...I don't HAVE a disk drive, obviously. How can I get the game to play properly when its already installed on my computer. There HAS to be a way, this is crazy

The Sims 3 is supported by Origin so it is possible to play it on the MacBook Air without the disc. Here's the problem with Origin, though. It's currently only available for Windows so you'd need to Boot Camp the machine in order to then install Windows, Origin and ultimately the Sims 3. Not exactly a work around. Origin is coming to the Mac and no mention of what cloud-sync games it'll support, there's also no date for when Origin will be available. So if you were willing to wait at a future point you might have some extra options or go the Bootcamp route.
I'll let you and Judge Linc Davis hash out the legal wrangling but outside of some "creative & questionable" no CD work arounds I'm afraid Linc is spot on about the requirement of having the CD present using an external drive.

You are allowed to have up to two activated installations of each version license you own, so unless you have already installed it to another system, you should be fine.  If not, phone customer support.  I've never heard of them refusing to reset a person's activations.

  • Play video games with MSI VOX USB?

    Hi,
I am interested in getting the MSI VOX USB 2.0 External TV Box and I am just wondering if I can play video games such as Playstation 2 with my laptop using this tv tuner. I heard some tv tuners have the "delay" make them useless to play video games. Does MSI VOX USB have this "dealy", and how is the the picture quality while playing video game with this tv tuner?
    Thanks in advance.
    Jim

    Hiya,
I dont really understand the VoxBox but I've just inadvertadly managed to put the PS2 on my laptop by plugging the video/audio cables into the converter and then into a USB port, and although it did work, and there wasnt a delay or anything, the quality was poor compared to a TV and also it flickered a bit so I'm not sure it would work that well- but that may have just been my computer playing up. Definitely possible though. Sorry I cant offer much more advice!

  • Playing Russian Roulette with Firewire 400 drives and Final Cut Pro

oh boy! this has been a fun week!
I would love to ask the advice of the group about checking the firwire
ports on my computer, and also on the separate external drives.
Here is what has been going on.
Final Cut Pro 5 starts up and then starts to pinwheel.
but in short here is the result, I have recently lost 2 external
FIREWIRE 400 drives, one by LaCie that is my newest drive of the
group, it is 160gb 2 port FW400, and another by ProMax which also has
2 FW400 ports. the lacie was the first to go and is just not mounting
and does not show up using any of my Disk Utility software (even the
heavy duty stuff like DATA RESCUE II or Disk Warrior), I am thinking
that both ports are bad(maybe fried by another bad port on my tower?)I
can hear it when i boot it up and it sounds normal with the same
routine sounds, but it just doesn't mount, nor show up, so is this the
    ports?fried?
Now, on my tower I have the following setup - 2 FW400 ports that are
STOCK that came with the TOWER G4 when I bought it. There is also a
FIREWIRE 400 card which has 3 ports. In the past I have used all the
ports for drives, and for a printer and a scanner in my studio.
Everything mounted and worked properly. Then, recently I moved the
drives and the tower to another location(in the room and no I didn't
drop or shake anything) and replugged everything in again, probably in
different slots but upon boot the external firewire drives didn't mount.
I had to UN PLUG them and then RE INSERT them by trial and error(which
I thought normal as I have done this when using these drives with my
laptop, until I got them to mount. they all did mount. However, once
up an running I started Final Cut Pro 5, and it started to get a
PINWHEEL for more than reasonable and if forced me to RESTART the
    computer.
The next time, one of the HARDDRIVES (the LaCie 160gb) was no longer
mounting, and I tried to change firewire ports and on the stock and
also on the card for fear that the 3rd party card might be faulty.
I even ran APPLEs HARDWARE Utility and it gave no results as to
anything faulty on the firewire ports. It just said they were there.
Both stock and the PCI firewire card.
Next, I tried to mount this LaCie 160gb onto another computer, with no
results.....it now acts as if both ports are faulty, again, I hear the
drive spinning and going through its initial startup, which sounds
exactly like the other drive, but it never mounts. which is odd...what
is your idea about this drive? and how to save it?
is there a way to take the drive out of the casing and test it in my
other LaCie160gb that is currently working?
2nd, this is where it gets funky, then upon starting Final Cut Pro,
the pinwheel reappeared now with another firewire drive a PROMAX 160gb
that was plugged into the STOCK FW 400 port (on the tower) starting to
show a RED light(not good), however, after restart, I didn't see the
PROMAX drive mount, but I was able to load it up with DATA RESCUE II,
and it is doing a QUICK SCAN to save the DATA on that disk......
now I have backed up most of this data, but the problem now is not the
data, it is whether or not to even plug any of my other drives into
any of these FW ports until I can test them for faultiness.
A friend told me of another friend having a problem where a firewire
port was frying drives as soon as they plugged them into the certain
port. How can you figure this out without re-acting like 'Deerhunter?'
This feels like playing Russian Roulette......if you get my drift?
How do you check any ports for such foul play?
Thanks in advance for your support....
    makin

well, now I am finding out that the culprit is I think the POWER MAC g4 itself.
For it has been blowing the firewire ports over time by frying them with power.
    Has anyone had this happen?
My Power Mac g4 will not shut down.
    It powers itself back up.
I end up having to press the POWER button and holding it, but this sends power to the firewire ports and I can hear them turning on.
so all this time I had just dealt with the issue
Apple had seemed to blame it on a 3rd party MATROX card in the PCI slot.
But, now that has long been taken out of the equation.
The only thing left is that the 17inch MONITOR is plugged into the POWER MAC and for some reason it is keeping a charge?
Can anyone help me in this matter?
As this has haunted me for 5 years with this machine, and I have probably fried more drives than I care to mention.
I just want my computer to SHUT DOWN when I tell it to.
is that too much to ask?
Might the POWER SUPPLY be at fault?
What in God's name could keep this ******* of a computer from shutting down?
I have no USB hubs or keyboards hookedup
the only thing is the MONITOR itself....that you can press its button to shut down etc.
I would be honored to know what this is as APPLE CARE never could figure it out
I didn't want to go through the hassle of taking out the RT MAC card, and just either left the machine on, or Unplugged the thing....
that is a nasty way to shut down a computer is it not?
much thanks to any one who can help me to figure this out?
    thanks

  • Comparison of SSD with hard disk drives

    Attribute or characteristic
    Solid-state drive
    Hard disk drive
    Spin-up time
    Instantaneous.
May take several seconds. With a large number of drives, spin-up may need to be staggered to limit total power drawn.
    Random access time[45]
About 0.1 ms - many times faster than HDDs because data is accessed directly from the flash memory
Ranges from 5–10 ms due to the need to move the heads and wait for the data to rotate under the read/write head
    Read latency time[46]
Generally low because the data can be read directly from any location; In applications where hard disk seeks are the limiting factor, this results in faster boot and application launch times (see Amdahl's law).[47]
Generally high since the mechanical components require additional time to get aligned
    Consistent read performance[48]
Read performance does not change based on where data is stored on an SSD
If data is written in a fragmented way, reading back the data will have varying response times
    Defragmentation
SSDs do not benefit from defragmentation because there is little benefit to reading data sequentially and any defragmentation process adds additional writes on the NAND flash that already have a limited cycle life.[49][50]
HDDs may require defragmentation after continued operations or erasing and writing data, especially involving large files or where the disk space becomes low. [51]
    Acoustic levels
SSDs have no moving parts and make no sound
HDDs have moving parts (heads, spindle motor) and have varying levels of sound depending upon model
    Mechanical reliability
A lack of moving parts virtually eliminates mechanical breakdowns
HDDs have many moving parts that are all subject to failure over time
    Susceptibility toenvironmental factors[47][52][53]
No flying heads or rotating platters to fail as a result of shock, altitude, or vibration
The flying heads and rotating platters are generally susceptible to shock, altitude, and vibration
    Magneticsusceptibility[citation needed]
    No impact on flash memory
Magnets or magnetic surges can alter data on the media
    Weight and size[52]
The weight of flash memory and the circuit board material are very light compared to HDDs
Higher performing HDDs require heavier components than laptop HDDs that are light, but not as light as SSDs
    Parallel operation[citation needed]
Some flash controllers can have multiple flash chips reading and writing different data simultaneously
HDDs have multiple heads (one per platter) but they are connected, and share one positioning motor.
    Write longevity
Solid state drives that use flash memory have a limited number of writes over the life of the drive.[54][55][56][57] SSDs based on DRAM do not have a limited number of writes.
Magnetic media do not have a limited number of writes.
    Software encryption limitations
NAND flash memory cannot be overwritten, but has to be rewritten to previously erased blocks. If a software encryption program encrypts data already on the SSD, the overwritten data is still unsecured, unencrypted, and accessible (drive-based hardware encryption does not have this problem). Also data cannot be securely erased by overwriting the original file without special "Secure Erase" procedures built into the drive.[58]
HDDs can overwrite data directly on the drive in any particular sector.
    Cost
As of October 2010, NAND flash SSDs cost about (US)$1.40–2.00 per GB
As of October 2010, HDDs cost about (US)$0.10/GB for 3.5 in and $0.20/GB for 2.5 in drives
    Storage capacity
As of October 2010, SSDs come in different sizes up to 2TB but are typically 512GB or less[59]
As of October 2010, HDDs are typically 2-3TB or less
    Read/write performance symmetry
Less expensive SSDs typically have write speeds significantly lower than their read speeds. Higher performing SSDs and those from particular manufacturers have a balanced read and write speed.[citation needed]
HDDs generally have symmetrical read and write speeds
    Free block availability andTRIM
SSD write performance is significantly impacted by the availability of free, programmable blocks. Previously written data blocks that are no longer in use can be reclaimed by TRIM; however, even with TRIM, fewer free, programmable blocks translates into reduced performance.[25][60][61]
HDDs are not affected by free blocks or the operation (or lack) of the TRIM command
    Power consumption
High performance flash-based SSDs generally require 1/2 to 1/3 the power of HDDs; High performance DRAM SSDs generally require as much power as HDDs and consume power when the rest of the system is shut down.[62][63]
High performance HDDs generally require between 12-18 watts; drives designed for notebook computers are typically 2 watts.

I wish I could get my head round the SSD vs HDD with a NLE rig.  My builder is trying to persuade me to use a Toshiba 256Gb THNSNC256GBSJ for OS and programs, and it is only NZ$20 more expensive than the 450Gb 10k rpm VelociRaptor I was originally planing to use for the OS.  That sounds suspiciously cheap to me, and I am concerned about the finite writes to SSD - mainly because I don't really understand it.
The rest of the new build is
    3930K
    Gigabyte X79-UD5
    8 x DDR3 1600
    Coolermaster with 750W PSU
    Geforce GTX570
I plan to transfer the drives from my current system as a starting point, and reassess after giving it some use.  That means
Either the above SSD or 450Gb 10k Raptor for OS (new drives)
300Gb 10k rpm Raptor  (currently used for OS in old box)
150Gb 7k4 rpm Raptor (reserved for Photoshop Scratch in old box)
    2 x 1Tb WD Blacks (data drives)
    2 x 1Tb WD USB3 externals
I don't know how I would configure the drives in the new box, but have seen Harm's table and will try to follow his advice.  It's a dreadful thing to admit, but I don't have a backup strategy, and the above drives are well over half full. Well over!  And I am only just getting serious about video, (the rest is mainly CR2 files from my Canon 1Ds3 and 1D4)
I know it must be like banging your head against the wall, but should I avoid that SSD and go with the 450G Raptor?   I have read a comment that the WD Blacks don't work well as Raid0.  Is that BS or true?
I am about to give the go-ahead so need to confirm the spec.

  • Will OSX Lion be compatible with hybrid disk drives?

I woud like to know if the new OSX will have support for hybrid disk drives. The drives that have a medium/small SSD disk and a bigger HDD disk. From what i've hear, for now OSX snow leopard is not compatible because it start to give errors of low disk space on the SSD part, since that is the main disk and have small volume.

There is no support for hybrid drives (although, the Momentus XT is the only one I know of).  The OS sees the drive as a standard hard drive.  Many people are using this drive with Snow Leopard without issue.  The operating system cannot see the SSD portion of the drive as such.  The hardware within the drive determines what gets stored on the SSD portion.  I have not heard of any low disk space errors consistent with your comment.

Is it possible to replace the SSD drive in a Qosmio X505-Q880 with a hard disk drive?  If so what type will work?
    Thanks,
    Ed

Yes. I just replaced my 60 gig with a Kingston 240gig from Amazon. Re installed Windows 7 Ultimate. I DID NOT use the recovery disk from Toshiba because there were many programs that did not suit my needs, excellent though they were. It runs very fast about 4 times as fast as my old drive.

  • Virtual pc on mac: will it play pc games with virtual pc

i was just wondering if i got virtual pc, if that would allow me to take advantage of playing pc games this way. Just wondering thanks for anyone who answers this.

Well first you should check with some folks if the darn thing is still running somewhat decently. Apple has made some OS updates and announcements that will pretty much render the future of VPC obsolete, or at the time being halt all needs for futher updates. Microsoft is strugging with Vista as it is, so I don't even know if MS made a update to VPC to run on dual core processors, I don't beleive they have.
Apple's "Boot Camp" and then there is Parallels Workstation to run other OS's at the same time as Mac OS X on Mac's with Intel processors. Without the need for VPC.
Far as I know, VPC (on PPC G5 machines) uses only one processor even if there are more. So whatever you can run will have to run well with VPC running on the same processor. Second, video card performance is not going to be great, so perhaps some simple 2D games, but nothing 3D dependent like Halo2 or Half Life.
If you want to run 3D PC games on a Mac you can get by with a MacBook Pro by booting into Windows under "Boot Camp" but of course for real performance you'll have to wait for the Mac Pro (Intel processor based "PowerMacs") to make a appearance as with this machine the video card is upgradable.
We don't know quite when that will be, but that would be the machine to get if your interested. If your happy with PPC G5 games then the Quad is your baby although not a 3D gamers weapon of choice because Mac's don't have near as many titles as PC's, although we do have a lot.

  • Installing Snow Leopard on Alu iMac with broken disk drive

The disk drive in my 24" alu iMac is crap and has never worked properly and now wont accept most disks and I've had Snow Leopard for ages but not been able to install it.
Would this work - I have an old Powerbook G4 1.5ghz with 1.25gb RAM and a fully working superdrive. Could I put the snow leopard disk in that and share the disk to my iMac connecting them with a firewire cable and install this way? (They both have 400 & 800)
    How would I do this?

Actually, pretty much any iMac later than the second generation iMac G5 ALS (the "Ambient Light Sensor" model) are quite challenging to take apart & put back together without damaging something. Taking apart any of them after the ALS involves removing delicate items held in place by adhesives, removing hard to reach connectors, & so on. Not impossible but definitely not something the average user should try.
For that reason, I suggest an even more obvious option: instead of paying to have the internal replaced, just buy an external optical drive instead. For instance, Other World Computing offers a lot of them. Although I don't know if it sells outside the U.S. it should give the OP some idea of what's available.
