Playing a "playlist" in shuffle mode

How do I play a Smart Playlist in shuffle mode? I can shuffle all my songs, but not just a certain playlist.

Go to SETTINGS > SHUFFLE and set it to SONGS. Then, go back & play your playlist - it will be shuffled.

Playing all videos in shuffle mode

Can I make a playlist of all music videos that I can play in shuffle mode. I want the next video to play after the 1st one is done without having to go back to the video page and select another video. I could do that on my Generation 5?

The only way to do this is with a 'smart playlist', and currently there is a bug in the software version 1.1, and 1.1.1 which corrupts or doesn't sync smart playlists properly.

I don't know whats going on. I'll be playing a playlist and the next thing I know I hear hear this weird little noise and then the nano goes into shuffle mode? I've had the nano for about to 2 or 3 months did it a few time in the begining but now it's doing it more. Does anyone know whats going on? Thanks.

I sounds like either your "shake" feature or your "shuffle" feature is turned on. I had a similar problem and couldn't turn off my "shake" feature. Someone else on this board helped me fix it. Make sure both of these settings are turned to "off":
main menu ---> settings ---> shuffle=off
AND
main menu ---> settings ---> playback ---> shake=off

HT5470 How can I keep my playlists in shuffle mode?

I cannot get my iPod nano 7th generation to remain in shuffle mode for my playlists. I have to manually hit shuffle each time I want to play a playlist. I use the Nike+ feature a lot and when I start my running playlist, I cannot access the shuffle button. With my previous iPod nano 7th generation I could keep it in shuffle mode (I had to send that back due to a problem and have a new one), but I cannot figure it out on the new iPod. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

If you keep the entire iTunes folder as it was and you're still using the same platform, you'll be able to keep all your playlist and metadata.

Well, iTunes will only transfer content from the computer to your iPod. However, there's some ways to get around this. Read this carefully:
If you have purchased songs from the iTunes Music Store, then those are pretty easy to transfer to your computer. You'll just need to follow [this instructions|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305465].
All your other songs (for example, those ripped from your CD's), you'll need to use any 3rd party program to transfer them to your iTunes library!
Some can also transfer your playlists, videos, ratings, podcast...

Albums missing from playlist when shuffle-modes are turned on

I created a playlist and all 312 files that should be in that playlist display in iTunes and when I navigate into the playlist in my ipod. However, when I start playing that playlist and my ipod is set to "shuffle by songs" or "shuffle by artist", my ipod will start playing file "1 of 77". All 77 of these files are on two albums. When shuffle is turned off, it will play all 312 songs. Why does my ipod ignore all the other albums that should be part of the playlist when shuffle is turned on? The only criteria to be on the playlist is that the genre must match one of the rules. I do not see a difference in tagging between the 2 albums that play reguarless of shuffling and all the others. Just to be sure, I even tried adding tag data to the "sorting" fields.

Check under Get Info on the tracks that don't play. They are probably set to Skip When Shuffling.
(The Skip option is found under the Options tab in Get Info.)

Weighted/Prioritize Songs in Playlists for Shuffle Mode

Either automatically or by allowing us to assign values to songs within playlists indicating how often we want to hear the particular song or how many times we want the song to be replayed before it is removed from the shuffle queue for a user specified amount of time.
It doesn't have to be that complicated. It would be nice to have "Play this song less often" and "Play this song more often" options.
I would really like to see what other users have to think about this.

Smart Shuffle- power hour feature (play each song for a desired amount of time from a certain start point of the song) Example: Play my Top 40 playlist starting 1 minute into the song, only play the song for 2 minutes before crossfading to the next song. This is a powerful feature and could be used as a virtual DJ like for clubs and parties or at a BBQ. Some people don't want to listen to a full 5minute song and are just happy with hearing 2 minutes of the 5 minute song. - allow a toggle to shuffle a playlist but with priorities like: new songs added to the playlist, most played and etc. Some people have 500+ song playlists but when shuffling they would love to hear their newly added songs more often than a song they added 2 years ago. Sure they could make a new playlist with their new songs but what if they like hearing an old song once in a while to spice things up a bit.

I have a ipod nano, and I bought a Bose portable sound system, when I put my ipod in the unit and play my songs in shuffle mode, it plays the same song over and over, how do I get it to play in shuffle mode?

Sounds like the repeat setting has been enabled. See your iPod's User Guide for information on how to turn it off.

How can I play all albums of a same genre in shuffle mode?

Since I upgraded my iPhone 5 to iOs 7, I can't play all my albums of a same genre in shuffle mode like I used to do with iOs 6.

The Touch will only play Albums in the correct track order when you select an album, but then it will only play that one album.
If you want to play multiple Albums in their correct track order, your options are to either:
1- Make a playlist in iTunes that is sorted by Album (or Album by Artist), sync the playlist to the Touch, and play the playlist with Shuffle turned OFF, or
2- Make an On The Go playlist on the Touch by adding one Album at a time and play it with Shuffle turned OFF, or
3- Look for the free app called "Album Mixer" which gives you the "Album Shuffle" capability found on other iPods -- i.e. the playback is by Album in normal track order, then when the Album completes it will jump to track #1 of a randomly-selected Album and play that one in track order.

Spotify free not working at all on iphone (says I need premium to play radio or shuffle mode)

I have spotify free on my computer (mac v. 10.9.5) and it is working normally. However, when I try to use spotify free on my iphone 5 (iOS 8.4), it says "premium only" even when I try to play songs in shuffle mode, or the radio, or playlists in shuffle mode. What's the point of downloading this app if it won't play anything at all on the free version? Please advise.

Play count not updating - Shuffle 1st gen

My 1st generation iPod shuffle is not updating the play count or last played fields properly.
I have tested it with a few tracks manually dragged into the iPod, and it seems to work if I do this. However the play counts do not update if I use Autofill from my smart playlist. And I tried limiting my smart playlist to 950 MB (It's a 1GB shuffle) and dragging the playlist manually. Again the play count does not update.
This is a pain as I use the smart playlist to pick songs for my iPod and I use play counts in my smart playlist criteria, so it's messed up the way I use my iPod and iTunes.
(It used to work fine when I had earlier versions of Windows, iTunes and iPod software. I had problems getting iTunes to recognise or sync with the iPod, but updating windows to Service Pack 3 fixed this. But have had this play count problem since. I have up to date versions of iTunes and iPod software.)
Anyone had a similar problem and managed to fix it?

I've had this problem too, since the 8.1 release? It had been failing in shuffle mode but not in "not shuffle"/"in order". As of today it failed to update play date/count after playing in the "not shuffle" mode. The songs that were played are untouched, but a like number of other random songs that had not been played show today's date.
The apparent lack of support for older hardware is really disappointing. It certainly does not motivate me to go out and buy more Apple hardware which they will soon stop supporting.

IOS 5.0.1 upgrade, devices hangs in shuffle mode

Hello, I have an original iPad and the newest iPod touch and ever since the iOS 5.0.1 upgrade, both devices hang after a while when playing either all songs or a playlist in shuffle mode. It gets to a point where the song playing doesnt match the song displayed then on the next song it hangs. At this point I have to close iTunes and start over. Sometimes it hangs after a few songs and sometimes after 30-40 minutes.
This has made shuffle mode unusable ( which is what I primarily use). It never did this prior to 5.0.1. Thoughts?

I did the back-up / restore option all from within iTunes. Still no problems so that appears to be the fix until Apple recognizes it and puts out a fix.

How to keep tracks together in shuffle mode?

When playing in shuffle mode you can't hear tracks in line together while they should be, e.g. in conceptalbums.
Is there a way to overcome this?
(You can do it with complete albums when downloading in the Library, but what can you do when the tracks are already in the Library?)

In English, that is named as "Part of a compilation" and Google Translates that as "Deel van een compilatie". As far as iTunes is concerned, this means that the album has songs by different artists, albums such as the "Now X" series. It is how iTunes keeps a Various Artists album together.

Two possibilities that I can think of (number 2 is the better one):
Create a Playlist for each "work", by simply adding all the songs from one work to one Playlist and all songs from the next work to another Playlist and so on. Then, if you want to play one complete work, followed by another complete work, you could simply create a further Playlist and add each "work Playlist" you want to this new Playlist. To make the works random, all you could do is choose for yourself as you are adding them. You would need to play this new Playlist in order, not shuffle.
If you originally imported this music from a CD, you could import from the CD again. But this time, combine the tracks that make up one work, as one track. iTunes names this as "Join CD Tracks" (or CD-tracks samenvoegen in the Dutch iTunes).
In the screenshot above, I have selected tracks one, two and three and then used the options menu to find Join CD Tracks. This third option will not be visible until you select two or more adjacent tracks, as shown above.
In the screenshot below, I have joined tracks one, two and three as one "work". Then joined tracks four, five and six as a separate work. Finally, I've joined tracks seven through twelve as a third work.
Notice in the screenshot that the Options menu says "Unjoin CD Tracks". That is because the highlighted ones (7-12) are currently joined.

With this second method, a work (of several tracks) will always be played as one track (or song). You can then simply add all the individual works to one Playlist, and play the Playlist in Shuffle Songs mode. That way, each work would be played in full, followed, at random, by another work.)
And if you really need to - import the CD this second time with a slightly different album name, so that you then have two copies. One, where each song (or track) is the individual song on the album and the second where each "song" is a work.
Now, lets hope I can get my iTunes back into "English" English, as my Dutch is not too good, even though I'm just the other side of the North Sea from you!

How can I step backwards though my previously played songs when in shuffle mode, without reshuffling the order of the songs?

It shouldn't change the order when you step back.

In shuffle mode, same song keeps repeating

Since updating to firmware 1.1.4, everytime I play the iPod in shuffle mode, it repeats the same song over and over. I have to forward to the next song. I don't remember this happening prior to updating. Is anyone else having this issue?

While playing the song, turn your phone to portrait(that's upright) and tap the cover art(or whatever may be there). A new set of controls will appear below the existing controls(back, track info, album info). Of the new controls, make sure the control on the far left is not blue. If it is, tap until it goes white. That 'loop' represents track repeat.
