Playing Avid Mpeg 50 Codec in FCP

Hi I have FCP V7 on Snow Leopard 10.6.6 and have successfully installed the latest Avid PE codec Package for Intel. The Mpeg50 media will now play in QT player, but not in FCP where it says:"Codec not found you may be using a compresssion card without the corresponding hardware card." Any ideas?

The whole point is that we have done this successfully before with V6 and a powerpc mac. So maybe its either Snow Leopard, V7 or the codec compatibility. I wouldn't want to generate media with this codec, but as most of our station is Avid, then it is useful to be able to play same as source exports from Avid without transcoding.
Remember the files play perfectly well in QT player, since FCP is built around QT, I'm baffled. Maybe its a Libraries thing or permissions?

Our client is sending us .mov Quicktimes with Avid DNxHD Codec.
It wouldn't play on our Macbook Pros, but no problem, I downloaded the codec and it ran fine afterwards.
Not having the same luck with our Power Mac G5 Workstation.
It runs on Mac OS Leopard 10.5.8.
Downloaded the codec for Leopard from this link:
    http://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=263545
    Nothing changed.
I play the file and all I see is black as the timeline runs.
How should I fix this issue?

The Power Mac G5 does not have an Intel Processor like the newer macs do. Could that be root of issue?
It is a definite possibility. The link you posted indicated the Mac v2.1 component was compatible with OS 10.5.5 and later which would normally imply QT 7 with or without Intel CPU. However, the editing software applications do seem to restrict their use to "Intel only" Mac systems. For instance, Pro Tools v8.3 and higher are listed as "Intel Only" software. Did try the v2.01 QT codec component or look for anything older?

I don't beleive FCP cares what is in the timeline as long as you provide the right CODEC.

  • Problem Importing Importing Avid Mov File Into FCP

    Hello all,
I had transitioned into this issue off an older thread I had, with a different topic. So I figured it was smarter to just make it it's own thread, since it's become it's own issue.
I am editing the core of a project on Final Cut Pro 6. A portion of the footage that was shot for this project though, was captured on a PC into Avid Media Composer 3.0, and therefore, converted to MXF format.
I am running both Final Cut Pro 6 (FCP 6) and Avid Media Composer 3.0 (AMC3) on my Macbook Pro, so I was able to import this MXF footage into AMC3. That was the easy part. The hard part, has been knowing how to properly export it, so I can then, properly import it into FCP6.
Important detail about the FCP6 System Settings:
    - *The sequence preset is DVCPRO HD - 1080p24*
In the Avid, when I go to export a small 1 min clip (as a test), these are the Quicktime options I am given:
    Fast-Export Quicktime NTSC
    Fast-Export Quicktime PAL
    Make New - QuickTime Reference
    Pro Tools QuickTime (ref)
    QuickTime Reference
    Quicktime Reference DV Codec
    Send To QT Movie
None of them were seeming to work. I was getting this message:
"Long GOP media can not be exported using same as source. Please select a custom resolution or transcode to an I-frame only resolution."
*Send To QT Movie* seems to be the only one that works. But I then had to go in and customize it, making my own Saved preset for this.
I've now so far tried this with 4 custom presets, and while all of them are able to export and play / look fine on my desktop..... none of them import correctly into FCP6. They'll play as clips... but completely stuttery and unusable. I'll then drop them into a sequence, and they'll play for about 3 seconds and then I'll get this message:
    "Warning - Dropped Frames
One or more frames were dropped during playback.
    If this occurs frequently, try:
    - Turning off 'Unlimited RT'
    - Lowering your compression data rate.
    - Closing open sequences.
    - Lowering the preference for real-time audio tracks.
    - Increasing the speed of your system and/or disk drives and/or network connection."
Now, I've also gotten a message about the projects needing to have the same capture preset, but I can't replicate it at the time of this post. Though, I'm sure this is probably the root of the problem.
Here's why: In AMC3, with my custom export preset, I notice that Avid supports the DVCPRO codecs, but doesn't have the exact one I'm using in FCP6.
    Here's what I have in my AMC3:
DV/DVCPRO - NTSC (this is the one I'm using, and have tweaked the frame rate to 23.98)
    DVCPRO - PAL
    DVCPRO HD 1080i50
    DVCPRO HD 1080i60
DVCPRO HD 1080p25 (this one is close...)
    DVCPRO HD 1080p30
    DVCPRO HD 720i50
    DVCPRO HD 720i60
    DVCPRO50 - NTSC
    DVCPRO50 - PAL
Now, you'll remember that my sequence preset in FCP6 is DVCPRO HD - 1080p24.
Because this doesn't exist in Avid, I went with DVCPRO HD 1080p25 and just customized the frame rate to 23.98.
    Still no cigar though.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I should further customize the Avid codecs? Or is there even a way to just download more Avid DVCPRO codecs so I can find one with 1080p24?
Sorry for such a long post. I like to be thorough.

    Hi Kyle,
    Just some more backstory:
This was a two day shoot.
    - One Day 1 of the shoot (Saturday), we shot with the Sony camera, on Sony DVC tapes (MiniDV). This was about 20 gigs worth of media shot that day. That footage was later captured onto an Avid MC 3.0 in MXF format. (I still have it all raw on my passport drive if you need further info about those files)
    - On Day 2 of the shoot (Sunday), we got the camera we wanted all along for the shoot -- the Panasonic HVX200. Therefore, all of Day 2 was shot on P2 cards, converted on a Macbook Pro, and then put onto an external harddrive. This was about 80 gigs of media.
Right now, when I watch the Sunday footage (Sony) on FCP6, I do indeed see faint horizontal lines on the canvas, when free-framed and at 100%. They're not terrible... but they're there. (I'm not great at this, so if you need total confirmation, I can upload you a large rez screenshot so you can decipher if the interlaced lines are there)
Now, I just checked this out on the Sunday footage as well (the Panasonic P2 card footage which wasn't converted, but imported directly into FCP6, without need for the Avid as the middle-man), and I see the same faint lines on this as well.
Both pieces of media (the original Panasonic footage and the converted Sony footage) are at 29.97FPS. Both are at the same Compressor now (DVCPRO HD 1080p30) per your instructions . Meaning, the Pansonic footage brought into FCP6 had that as a preset from the moment I installed the program and was asked to choose my project settings..... and once you explained to me how to look for this, I then sought to match it on the Avid end, and changed the EXPORT settings on the Avid files to that codec.
So both sources medias match now in FCP6. They also play now without stutter.
But they both do have those lines. Albeit, faint, but I'm concerned about them now.
So I think this definitely has to do with my Final Cut Audio/Video settings:
My Sequence Preset is: DVCPRO HD - 1080p24
My Capture Preset is: 1080p24 48KHz
Should the Sequence Preset be changed to p30?
And if so... will I then have to recapture all the Panasonic footage back in? (I'd lose all my log notes and shot names).
Or, can I just delete the two timelines, change the sequence setting, and then redrag them back in?
Thanks for all your help, Kyle.

  • Avid Meridien Codec in Compressor

I'm having trouble encoding anything using Compressor, it keeps giving me a "failed: codec not installed" message. I have the Avid Meridien codecs (AvidAVDJCodec.component and AvidAVUICodec.component) installed. I had been having trouble even playing the QT movies that were exported out of avid in quicktime player, but I found out that these codecs do not work in the new intel macs, and i had to select 'open using rosetta' in the Quicktime Player Application - Get Info.
They play back fine in quicktime. I even tried to change the info on the compressor application to 'open using rosetta' thinking that it would be the same intel chip type problem. Nothing seems to work. I can't figure out how quicktime player is able to see/hear them fine but compressor cannot.
    Any help?
Running on Intel iMac, OSX 10.4.7, Quicktime Pro 7.1.2, Compressor 2.1.
    Thanks in advance.

Intel iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Thanks a lot Jerry. I downloaded the codecs and now I can see it both in FCP and QT. Now here's my problem. I need to add a dissolve at the beginning. But when I put the file in the timeline it has to be rendered. After I render it I can't see it anymore.
So I'm trying to figure out which sequence settings I need to get this to work. I've also tried exporting the clip from the browser as a QT Movie but that just comes out as black with audio. I also get a message when I try to this telling me I'm converting between DV and CCIR formats and would I like to preserve my pixel aspect ratio. I hit ok and it runs through the motions and gives me a black file. What am I doing wrong here?

  • How can I play an mpeg-2 file from my handycam on quicktime?

When I try to play an mpeg-2 file from my handycam I receive an error message stating that a required codec is not available.  How can I get this codec and is it a free download?  Neither audio or video will play.

Thanks for your input.  To clarify a couple of things, I'm ultimately looking at editing my video from the handycam, hopefully with imovie.  In exploring how to do this I came across mpeg streamclip video converter for osx but then discovered that in order to install it with Lion, I'd need to download a mpeg-2 playback component.  From what I understand, this component is inherent in QT 10.1 with Lion and therefor you can't brink up a 'disk image' in order to install the video converter.  Sounds like I'd need to buy that.
As previously mentioned, there are three forms of QT support for MPEG-2 content:
    1) The QT MPEG-2 Playback Component ($19.99) is required for use by QT 7 based applications (QT 7 Player, GarageBand, as well as, QT 7 based third-party applications like MPEG Streamclips. This component is not used required for nor used by the QT 10.1 Player or iMovie '07/'08/'11 apps.
    2) The Importer Component installed as part of your video editing software package. As previously indicated, this package handles the importation of content from various camcorders employing many different compression formats. It's primary purpose is to make the imported content "edit" compatible with the video editing software. In the case of "muxed" GOP MPEG-2/AC3 content, it decompresses/turns the P- and B-frames into I-frames which essentially makes the video QT editit compatible at the frame level without actually converting the video to a different compression format. This is a moderately fast operation which does not degrade the video quality. In addition, the importer component also converts the AC3 audio to QT "edit" compatible AIFF (Linear PCM) content and places both the video and audio content in an MOV file container. Since "muxed" GOP MPEG-2 content essentially synchronizes the audio and video content spatially, the last step in the import process is to add a time offset to minimize audio/video drift in the MOV file which synchronizes the multiple data tracks temporally with respect to an external timing reference. The result of this operation is QT edit compatible content in an MOV file container that is playback on any system having iMovie '07/'08/'11 installed. That is why I always recommend using this work flow for content still located on the camcorder.
    3) The QT 10.1 MPEG-2/AC3 GOP support appears to be built into the app or only accessible using the app and not available for use by either QT 7 or iMovie applications. This content is not QT edit compatible at the frame level (i.e., the manner in which all Apple video editors work).
    4) In the case where the "muxed" MPEG-2/AC3 content has already been removed from the camcoder and you can no longer "import" the content as per option 2 above, purchase of the QT MPEG-2 Playback component and use of the MPEG Streamclip app provides, in my opinion, the greatest degree of secondary functionality. In this case you have the option of demultiplexing the original content to M2V and AC3 content or paired M2V and AIFF elementary stream files or conversion of the content to any QT editit compatible audio and video compression combination including "Pro" editing codecs if FCP is installed on your system.
    5) With regard to the installation of the QT MPEG-2 Playback component, you have three options:
    a) You can install the component on a pre-Lion system and then copy it to your Lion system.
    b) You can download the MPEG Streamclip "beta" package and us the "helper" software to install the component directly on the Lion operating system.
    c) You can us an app like Pacifist to extract/install the component directly to the Lion OS platform.
In any event, remember that this component is not supported by the QT 10.1 app nor is AC3 natively supported by the QT 7 app and so you will have to use the MPEG Streamclip app to both make use of this component and provide app support of the AC3 audio which can then be "bridged" for use by QT 7 based apps.
All this being said, when I decided for the first time to just open my video in QT 10.1 (which is a .mpg file) it wouldn't open and the error said that a required codec wasn't available.  The file is .mpg and info states it is a mpeg-2 video, AC3.  I have VLC installed and can view the video with that, but am just frustrated as to why QT 10.1 won't play it (as I believe it should, since the file is a .mpg).
As I have repeatedly stated, I consider QT 10.1 "a work in progress" and have given up trying to guess why it works in some cases and not in others. In some cases, files sent to me having the problem you describe suddenly became playable in QT 10.1 after using VLC to copy the data from the original file container to a new program stream file container (i.e., not conversion was applied—just the copy of the original data). You can try this for playback purposes but it will do nothing for your editing work flow unless you plan to us QT 10.1 to convert the content to H.264/AAC for editing in which case HandBrake or MPEG Streamclip (with QT MPEG-2 Playback component) would probabaly work on the original file. (I.e., I prefer using a low-compression, high data rate compression format at highest video quality setting as an "intermediate" editing format to preserve as much of the original quality as possible.)
One thing I also noticed, there is no QT file in my library (I didn't move, delete or change anything, just looked to see if I could find the file as mentioned on another forum, but it wasn't there).  Not sure if this has a connection as to whether the .mpg file can be played with QT 10.1 or not.
If you are referring to an MOV file created by importing the content directly from the camcorder, then it will be located in your iMovie "Event" folder, the location of which will depend on which drive you assigned it to. Such a file sould already be both playback and editable in QT applications.
Any other input would be much appreciated.  Am I missing something from my QT 10.1 that should have  been installed?
I believe that covers just about everything. Since QT 10.1 is the original version installed by the Lion OS installer, there have not been any updates to it and, unless you have been messing around deleting things in your QT component folders, there is little probability that anything has been deleted, removed, or misplaced during normal system use. What I normally recommed is that you keep QT 10.1 installed and install the Lion compatible version of QT 7 (v7.6.6 if not already installed) to maximize your QT playback capabilities between the two. In fact, I tend to use the QT 7 "Pro" player for most daily "quickie" edits and still consider it the more useful of the two utility-Players.

  • Where do I install Avid Meridien codecs for use in Final Cut Pro X on Lion?

I'm using FCPX and imported a couple of files that were output with the Avid Meridien codec. When I try to use the files in FCPX, I can hear the audio, but I get no video. How do I get FCPX to see the codecs?

Yes, the files play in QT player with video. Can you provide a few more details on Compressor such as where to find and how to implement?

  • HT3775 Why won't Quicktime play a .mpeg file?

I have a .mpeg file and can not get it to play.  I am so frusterated!

Try installing Perian. It helps quicktime play lots of different formats.
Or, try VLC. It plays lots of video formats.
mpeg isn't one specific format. The video can be encoded in lots of different formats and still be called an mpeg. You have to find something that can play the particular codec that was used to encode the video.

If you can view a ProRes 4-2-2 video at all, then you either have the independent ProRes422 Playback component installed or the FCP "Pro" video components installed.

  • Use Compressor to export to AVID DNXHD CODEC

    Hey all,
I posted this question at the CreativeCow FCP forum - and than I thought maybe its a COMPRESSOR Forum question - so here it is:
I have installed AVID CODEC PACK LE
Currently I use FCP to export to DNXHD and its working OK (but slow).
I wanted to know if it is possible for me to use COMPRESSOR to export to AVID DNXHD CODEC.
I need it because a lot of times I need to export to this codec (for AVID System that does the Promos)
And I don't want to use FCP for that because I want to keep editing While I'm converting.
If Compressor can't export to DNXHD can I use QUICKTIME TO EXPORT TO DNX HD?
    Thanks!

Create a new Quicktime Movie in Compressor. Open the Inspector window and click on the settings button next to "Video." Then click on the Compression Type pulldown menu and scroll up to the Avid section and choose "Avid DNxHD."

  • AVID DV Codec to Apple DV Codec

    Hi,
I've recently received some quicktime video footage, exported from an AVID system, which I wish to import into my Final Cut system. However, as I've just found out, AVID exports DV footage using its own "Avid DV codec," which is incompatible with Final Cut Pro (it's also incompatible with my Quicktime player, it turns out). I know for a fact that the footage plays on a PC, but it can't play on my mac. Does anyone out there know how I can convert it to something Apple friendly? Any encoding applications you recommend?
    Cheers.

Just install the Avid QuickTime codecs...

  • Migrating from old Avid Xpress Meridien to FCP

Sorry if this question has been answered elsewhere, but unfortunately I don't have the time to dig for it.
Our agency is cuyrrently looking at upgrading our aging Avid Xpress (5.08, not Pro, not DV, but Meridien on OS9) to a FCP system (per my request). We have a G5 with FCP Studio already installed, but it's really only used for assembling DVDs and (motion) graphics.
What I'd like to do is move everything over to the FCP system and purchase an outboard video card and possibly more storage.
First of all, is Automatic Duck the best way to go for migrating projects? We have lots of old commercial and show projects that need to stay in-tact.
Secondly, what will be my best option for outboard video? We are looking to migrate to HD in the near future (more than likely DVCPro100, NOT hdv) and am looking at the different options for FCP.
Lastly, will the RAIDs I have from the old Avid work well with FCP, or should I try to push for a different setup?
Any help or insight is greatly appreciated. Even if it's simply links to past discussions.
    Thank you in advance!

Automatic duck is a great way of migrating projects, but only if they don't have any Avid filters or effects like Matte Keys or Animattes. Those will not transfer. Straight cuts, dissolves, wipes...they should transfer.
DVCPRO HD requires no special capture card. It transfers via firewire (thus the reason FCP 4.5 is called FCP HD). But for uncompressed HD, good cards to look into are the Kona LH, Kona 2 (Kona LHe and Kona 3 for the QUADS) or the Decklink HD series from Blackmagic. Aurora has yet to release an HD card, which is a darn shame...
For DVCPRO HD you will need either firewire 800 drives (recommend the G-Raids) or a SATA or fibrechannel Raid. For uncompressed HD, only the SATA or fibrechannel raids will cut it.
I am glad to hear that you are considering DVCPRO HD over HDV. Smart move. For more info on my experiences with the DVCPRO HD workflow, click on UNDERDOG.

  • Black jagged edges appear on footage with Avid DNxHD codec

    Hello,
Currently I'm editing some GoPro footage from my vacation, and I'm editing this video in Premiere and After Effects.
When I was done editing in Premiere and exported the video as a Quicktime movie with the Avid DNxHD codec, I brought it in to After Effects.
The project in After Effects is a 16 bpc since I have to dynamically stretch the footage to make it fit in a 1080p comp (doesn't have to do with this, but the point is, I have to edit in 16 bpc in order to stretch my footage). Now the problem is, I get weird black blocks around my clipped highlights, and this only happens in 16 or 32 bpc.
Here's a screen shot I took from it:
    Gyazo - 549356228a841d35b781c05c2b41011b.png
I don't know a lot about codecs and I have no idea how to solve this, so my question is: How do I get rid of these black blocks while still maintaining this 16 bits per channel?
It would be great if anyone could give me the answer .
    Jeroen

I just came up with a solution myself. In Premiere, change in the DNxHD codec settings from ''709'' to ''RGB''.
When you bring it into AE again, it won't have the black edges anymore.
However, I don't really know what this does to the quality of the video, but there's not a noticable difference.
