Playing back DVDs made in iDVD

Is iDVD able to create DVDs that will play consecutively in a multi-DVD player--a carousel player- without going back to the main menu screen? If I place a movie in the "Drag content here to automatically play..." box it always jumps to the menu screen even if I remove all menu buttons. How do I set iDVD to automatically advance to the next DVD in the carousel?
PM G4/1000DP 1.25GB/80 SD   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   w/ multiple external HDs

I suggest using the one step feature of iDVD6. That way it won't generate a menu. You can make a one step DVD from a QT movie or folder. Please consult the iDVD6 Help Menu for all details on this procedure. Type in the following into the Help Menu search:
"Burning a OneStep DVD from a folder"
In terms of setting the DVD player you have to automatically advance to the next DVD after one is finished; please consult the owners manual to your particular DVD player/carousel.
Hope this is helpful.

    Hi
    No audio on DVD disc.
    Most common origin.
    1. Imported audio from iTunes.
    • In iTunes copy out as an Audio-CD .aiff (Same as played on standard Stereo CD - no .mp3)
    • Use this in Your movie project
    2. Low - Free Space on Start-up/Boot/Internal/Mac OS Hard disk makes it hard for iMovie to work as intended.
Down to 1.3 GB and it doesn’t work - especially audio don’t migrate over to Media Browser
    (iM’08 & 09)
    3. Material in iMovie’08 & 09 - Shared to Media Browser and here selected as Large
large.m4v. It silenced out this project in iDVD. By making a slight alteration - provoking it to ask for a new Share/Publish to Media Browser and here selecting 640x480 - and audio was back when a new iDVD project was created including this movie.

    Large - - - - - - 720x540    960x540
    HD - - - - - - - - 1280x720
    4. Strange audio formats like .mp3, .avi, .wma etc.
    • Change them to .aiff. Use an audio editor like Audacity (free)
    5. Main audio is set to off in System Preferences - Does this by it self - Don’t know why
    Cheque Audio-Out resp. Audio-In

Had the same problem; some Googling around gave me a kludgy, but effective fix
Downgrade Perian from recent versions back to version 1.0.
That worked for me, and so far I haven't encountered any deficiencies — except it takes more advanced versions of Perian to enable QuickTime to handle subtitles in .srt format — that I have noticed.
    7. GarageBand fix.
In this set audio to 44.1 kHz (Klaus1 suggestion)
(if this don’t work try 48 kHz - me guessing)
    IMPORTANT !
    Before burning the DVD.
    • Do a DiskImage (File menu and down) (Save as a DiskImage)
    • Double click on the .img file
    • Test it with Apple DVD-player tool
If it’s OK then make Your DVD.
Burn at x1 speed.... (or x4)
    • In iDVD 08 - or - 09
    • Burn from DiskImage with Apple’s Disk Utilities application
    • OR burn with Roxio Toast™ if You got it

  • Satellite L500-1DT - Selectively plays back DVD disks

    Hi,
My DVD device all of a sudden only selectively plays back DVD disks (movies & music). I have validated the Region settings. All disks tested are compatible to this region and work on other media. The driver version: 6.1.7600.16385.
The only software recently installed was iTunes (64bit, Windows 7 compatible) - DVD playback still worked fine after installation.
Music CD's still work 100% as do some DVD's.
    Thanks,

    Hey Ironman69,
    > The only software recently installed was iTunes
When such CD/DVD related software is installed, they install filters into registry, which can cause compatibility problems.
That means you should remove the upper- and lowerfilters in Windows registry as you can read here:

  • DVDs made in iDVD won't play on a Mac

I've made a fair share of dvds from DVDSP and iDVD (version 7.0.4) but a few days ago I tried playing one that was created in iDVD on my computer (in the same drive that burned it) and it wouldn't recognize the disc. I tried several other dvds and they're spit back out too (all of them play fine on a standard dvd player). At this point, none of the dvds I've made from iDVD will play on my computer, while the dvds made from DVDSP seem to play just fine.
It seems odd that a dvd won't play on the very same drive that burned it. Does Apple do this intentionally? I need to copy one of the discs, but that won't happen until the computer recognizes it. Is there a workaround?

Thanks for the help. I looked into all these possible issues:
The drive itself works fine. Tested about 15 "homemade" discs and they all played normally.
I don't think it's the DVD brand. The at-fault dvds are Panasonic but my other Panasonic-burned dvds work okay. And they're all DVD-Rs.
I have 30g of hard disk space.
I checked the burn speed and it is set at the default ("Maximum Possible"). I've used this setting on my other DVDs which play fine, but maybe it could be the culprit?
The only other issue I could figure out is that the DVDs that won't play all have the same iDVD menu template. Perhaps there is a glitch with that menu?

  • Intel Macs play back DVDSP made HD-DVDs?

The Apple website states that you need a G5 to play back the HD-DVDs made in DVDSP4 (which in my mind is like buying a brand new sports car, but not being able to drive it off the lot). I assume that's simply a question of needing the processing power to decode the video.
However, has anyone tried playing one of these back on a MacBook Pro? Those apparently have plenty of horsepower, so perhaps they'd work.
Just wondering if anyone has tried this; I'm anxious to know, as it will impact where I take my latest project. Thanks!

You should be able to I would guess since the MacIntels will run the universal versions of the Studio (all parts of it) and QT 7. If an older G5 Single Processor can play HD then a Dual Macintel with higher speeds should (in fact it does support HDV rendering from FCP according to the specs).
Would make no sense for it to otherwise not play HD if it can author it (also you can use iLife 06 on MacIntels, which has HD apps.) Macbooks also support the 30" display. And there are reports that it plays HD files very well and has the horsepower.

Though it would be nice if Apple said it somewhere that is easy to find that it will actually play a DVD itself
Remember Apple's website can have mistakes

  • DVDs made in iDVD won't play on same computer

Why is it that every DVD I make in iDVD burns fine but will not play on the computer?
They play fine on DVD players but not on the iMac that made them.
On the iMac it just says the disc is blank, but it is not and plays fine on a DVD player.

Thanks for the help. I looked into all these possible issues:

  • Is  a dvd made in idvd onestep editable?

    Hi
I burned a dvd using onestep idvd, it plays back fine . If I give this to someone will the material be editable or is the dvd locked after encoding. Also when I look at the dvd in my Finder and open one of the video file it opens in MPEG Streamclip I have on my desk top and also there is nothing in the audio file.
I guess my main question is, is any part of this editable? The point is we would like it to be editable.
*Thanks for your time in advance*

The standard delivery format of a DVD is mpeg2, which is highly compressed and not intended for further editing. Normally you would edit before making the DVD.
It is possible to 'reverse engineer' a DVD to edit the contents, but you will suffer some quality loss:
You will need to convert the VOB files back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, but you must also have the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

  • Ripping DVD made from iDVD to Quicktime file

I have some clips on DVDs I made in iDVD that I need to convert back to Quicktime files. What is the easiest way to do this? (I no longer have the original files, just the burned DVDs.)

DVDs are a specific, compressed format of video. If you convert from mpeg2 (DVD format) to any other format, you will most likely introduce visual artifacts that were not in the original footage. Rather than transcoding a DVD, the best approach is always to go back to your original source video.

  • Final DVD made in iDVD skips when played back

Made slide show in Final Cut Express.  Exported as a QT movie and placed it in iDVD.  When I play it back it pauses and skips in certain spots.  I also have video on this movie and it paused on it also.

The usual causes would be poor media (like Memorex or TDK) and/or burning at a high sped (8X or higher).  Use Maxell or Verbatim and burn at a max of 4X.

  • DVD made with iDVD not playing in DVD players

I have a iMac G5 and iDVD 4. I use FCP to edit. I have made many DVDs from exporting my sequences to quicktime. Then I import that export into iDVD, and this has always been fine. For some reason, my latest project will only play on my computer using this method, not any of my 3 DVD players. What could be causing this? Did I change a setting I'm unaware of? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I've watsed a good many blank DVDs from this glitch. Thank you!

I have a similar problem having to do with the menu.
I have a client who needs dvds burned with their logo as a background. When I import a tiff (or any other format) into iDVD4.0.1 on the simplest template available (brushed metal 2) everything burns fine, the disk plays on a computer, but on commercial dvd deck it freezes when you hit play (one unit indicates "pause" on the display). If I remove the graphic from the background, and burn that to disk
    , it plays fine.
The iDVD help says you can drag your own photos to a menu, so if this is causing a problem, they certainly aren't aware of it. What bugs me, is why isn't there a "blank" template (or is there one that I've missed)?
BTW this has also happened to me at work two years ago with an earlier version of iDVD. Yet it doesn't happen on my client's version of iDVD (I have a call in to see what version they have). And who do you call when Apple only refers you to forums?
Thanks for any info, and please excuse any ignorance on my part.

  • Why am I getting wavy, distorted video on a DVD made with iDVD?

I made a DVD with iDVD 5 that has wavy, distorted video. It is watchable but you can clearly see that vertical lines are somewhat wavy whenever the camera pans across the scene. An up-down pan doesn’t distort the horizontal lines, however.
The source video file doesn't display this waviness. Also, I created a DVD of the same video using a PC and the resultant DVD didn't display the waviness. The waviness occurs whether the DVD is played on the computer or a TV monitor with a standalone DVD player. From all this I conclude that it has to be a consequence of the iDVD5 burning process.
Here’s some additional information: The PC burned the video from its original MPEG-2 format. The Mac burned the video from a .mov file that I created from the original MPEG-2 file using MPEG Streamclip. (I need to use MPEG Streamclip to restore (actually convert, I suppose) the audio as the source file has AC3 audio that doesn’t play in iMovie or Quicktime.) The resulting .mov file - when played with Quicktime before burning - does not exhibit the waviness, so I don't think the MPEG Streamclip conversion process is at fault.
On the same DVD I also placed a different video from the same source. It doesn’t display any of the waviness that I get from the other video. The only difference between the videos is that this latter video – after the MPEG Streamclip processing - was chaptered in iMovie HD and then exported to iDVD as a .mov file. I’d hate to think that I have to run every video through iMovie to eliminate the waviness.
So is this just an inexplicable defect or is there something that I might do differently to avoid the waviness that I’m getting in this video?
    Thanks, Robert
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Robert,
To me, the red flag is that you've created a .mov file from Quicktime for import back into iDVD. A .mov file is generally a smaller formatted movie, typically only 320X240 pixels in size. This size movie, by default, would look perfect when played in QT. But, to go back to iDVD or iMovie, the movie must be expanded back to a 720X480 size movie (typically the DV stream that these programs want and need), so expanding will cause all sorts of distortion. Can you go back to your original MPEG2 source movie and get the movie info on it? You should be able to see the original size. If it is something like 640X480 or 720X480 then use QT to create a .DV file. This will maintain the original size.

  • Dvds made from idvd are sometimes incompatible with PCs

I work in a university setting that has a mix of mac and pcs. I make the dvds using iDVD but am running into problems when they get played on pcs. Is there a preference or something special I can do when I know it will be played on those systems?

    Three things you can try:
    1. First, make sure that the PC's on which you are trying to play your disks have a DVD player, and not just a CD player.
    2. Try burning at a slower speed (4x or lower). iDVD won't let you adjust the burn speed, so what you do is save your iDVD as a Disk Image (an option on the File menu. This will take a while because all the decoding will be done. Then you can burn your DVD disk from the disk image using the Utility/Disk Utility app on your Mac. Open Disk Utility and select your project whose name should appear in the left hand pane of the window. If it is not there, then drag your project into that pane and select it. Then insert a DVD-R disk and select Burn.
    3. Use DVD-R disks, not DVD+R.
    4. Use good quality DVD media like Maxell, Verbatim, or Fuji DVD-R disks. I happen to like hp (Hewlett Packard) disks myself, but in any event avoid discount or cheapo disks.
As others have said, the DVD's that you make on your Mac should play anywhere.

  • Trouble copying a DVD made with IDVD 5

I have several DVD's created with iDVD.
I erased all the original projects. Now I want to make copies and the superdrive keeps spitting them out. The discs will not stay in. I can play them fine on DVD players. I have tried other disks to see if the disk drive is bad and it works fine. Any ideas of what is wrong?

I'm not saying for certain that you do, but you may have a problem with the optical drive.
I am assuming this is the same Mac that you burned them on?

  • Poor image quality on DVD made in iDVD - Urgent assistance required PLEASE

I have imported pictures to form a slideshow in iDVD. The pictures are great quality and look good but the problem I am having is how distorted and blurry they become when burning the dvd.
They look good for a split second when they transition in and then transition out, but become distorted whilst on display (set for 5 seconds)
I need urgent assistance please with this matter.
ps I am still a bit of a novice at this.
    Thanks

I agree with Bengt - there are better ways to make slideshows. Here is mine:
There are many ways to produce slide shows using iPhoto, iMovie or iDVD, but they all have one thing in common: they reduce the quality of the photos to that of a movie still frame and sometimes limit the number of photos you can use.
If what you want is what I want, namely to be able to use high resolution photos (even 300 dpi tiff files), to pan and zoom individual photos, use a variety of transitions, to add and edit music or commentary, and to end up with a DVD that looks good on both your Mac and a TV - in other words end up with and end result that does not look like an old fashioned slide show from a projector - you may be interested in how I do it. You don't have to do it my way, but the following may be food for thought!
Firstly you need proper software to assemble the photos, decide on the duration of each, the transitions you want to use, and how to pan and zoom individual photos where required, and add proper titles. For this I use Photo to Movie. You can read about what it can do on their website:
    http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php
(Other users here use the alternative FotoMagico: http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/homevspro/ which you may prefer - I have no experience with it.)
Neither of these are freeware, but are worth the investment if you are going to do a lot of slide shows. Read about them in detail, then decide which one you feel is best suited to your needs.
Once you have timed and arranged and manipulated the photos to your liking in Photo to Movie, it exports the file to iMovie 6 as a DV stream. You can add music in Photo to Movie, but I prefer doing this in iMovie where it is easier to edit. You can now further edit the slide show in iMovie just as you would a movie, then send it to iDVD 7, or Toast, for burning.
You will be pleasantly surprised at how professional the results can be!
