Playing Chess on Snow Leopard

I'm playing a game of chess, the application that comes with SL, and it is taking 99% of the CPU and fans are 6000+ RPMs.
Why is this? Very strange, never happened before. Thanks.

Nothing can be done. It takes a lot of CPU, but never made the fans roar in Leopard.

  • DVD Player will not play image files (Snow Leopard 10.6.2)

I am having a problem with my DVD Player. It will no longer play dvd iso files. Instead I get this error: "There was a problem opening the media: The media type is not supported"
What is really strange about this is that the audio from the DVD would play just fine, but there would not be an accompanying video window.
I find it hard to believe that when upgrading from leopard to snow leopard that the iso file format would become unsupported.
I have also tried to create my own DVD .img file and it too would not play in DVD Player giving me the same error message. Is there anything I can do to get my image files to play on this computer?

Change the file extension from img. to iso
Many obscure file formats are not accepted by DVD Players and require you to either change the format or get a converter. here read these they will help you a ton.

  • .m2v won't play after installing Snow Leopard

I used to be able to play .m2v files in QuickTIme 7 but since the install of Snow Leopard they will not play in either player. It says it is not in a format that QuickTime Player understands. The .m2v files were created from Compressor in Final Cut Pro 2.

You need the MPEG-2 playback component to play these video files.
For those who have FCP this component comes free with FCS. Did you do an upgrade of the OS and not a clean install? If so you more than likely lost the component during the upgrade.
You can use this program, Pacifist to extract the component from your FCP installation disc.
    http://www.charlessoft.com/
It has been a general consensus in the FCP forum to do a clean install of the OS and the FCS. If not you might run into problems with FCP. Here's some reading on that issue:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9979643&#9979643
For those who brought the component from the Apple store. You need to log into your online Apple store account and download the component again.

  • Playing movie under Snow Leopard

When I play a movie (.mov) under Snow Leopard from inside iPhoto, it uses Quicktime 7. When I export the same movie from iPhoto and play it in the Finder it uses Quicktime X. As there any way I can make it use Quicktime X from inside iPhoto?

OK, thanks, although not the answer I hoped for. Not a big issue, I just prefer Quicktime X. Probably I will update when iLife 10 (or 11?) comes out.

  • Repair manual DVDs play in Snow Leopard but not in Lion

Two of my tractor repair manual DVDs don't play in DVD Player (v.5.5) in the latest Lion OS on the latest iMac. They play well in Snow Leopard booted from an external drive on the same iMac. In Lion, the DVD Player just locks up. Is there a more recent DVD Player, or should I use a different player altogether? These are British DVDs, but since they play in SL, I would have expected them to play in Lion too. Any suggestions?

I have the same version 5.5 of DVD player running Lion and it works; however, I can't test it because I don't have British DVDs. Also couldn't have anything to do with Regions since they're working in SL. And, you don't need iDVD - that is an application to author/encode/burn homemade movies - it does not function as a DVD player. However, you may want to try VLC instead of DVD player - supposedly that'll play everything.

  • Anyone Figured Out How to Get Snow Leopard Working on a Retina 15" ?

    Hi All,
Has anyone figured out a way to get Snow Leopard to install and run stable on a Macbook Pro 15 Retina?
Just like Lion, Mountain Lion is flaky, and just isn't as rock solid as Snow Leopard.
Media, Finder, and a host of other system level attributes that were perfect in Snow Leopard are buggy in Mountain Lion.
Examples: Finder is weird now, and 19 full length movies that played perfectly in Snow Leopard under iTunes and my iPhone were wiped from my iPhone and deemed "not compabitle" under Mountain Lion.
As I posted when Lion came out, sometimes different is not better, it's just different. I now wish I hadn't sold my '09 Macbook Pro 17 to buy my Retina 15.
The big obstacle, of course is the fact that the Snow Leopard install doesn't have the correct drivers for video and other subsystems for my new Retina 15.
So, anyone figured out a work around?
    Thanks,
    Mark

You have got to be kidding if you think Windows 2000 was the most stable and bug free. And it quickly aged itself out of business and you could not connect any peripherals that appeared 2 years after its release. I think Windows 7 is far more stable and my second choice would be Windows XP.
Mountain Lion is running just fine on my late 2011 MPB and running fine on my 2 friends who have the rMBP. And they like to rub it in that they both have the rMBP.
And most people who rate such things claim Tiger was the most stable. You should have seen all the threads here with complaints about SL when it was released.

  • Time capsule stuck in endless loop after installation of Snow Leopard

I've done an upgrade to Snow Leopard on my Unibody Macbook.
Then when I started Time Machine for the first time, it asked me if I wanted to use my existing backup file or make a new one. I went for the existing backup file and it gave me a warning that I wouldn't be able to use it on my old machine anymore. I went for it.
Then I let it go for something like 15 hours, but it would always get to a certain percentage at "Calculating Changes", but never complete the actual backup. It would somehow restart after a while and start again from the beginning.
I tried this both wired and wirelessly. Also, I do not have access to my old backups in Time Machine. I just see "today".
I've looked in Console and filtered the syslog for "backupd". This clearly shows that it stops and starts several times. Problem is that I don't understand why this happens and how to solve it.
If anyone can shine a light on this, that would be great. Below are a few hours worth of logfile.
    Kind regards,
    Bastian

Thank you for your feedback. I tried repairing in Disk Utility, but it didn't find any problems.
I think it may have to do with some of the things mentioned in this article about new hardware and time machine backups: http://www.tuaw.com/2009/07/20/mac-301-time-machine-backups-after-your-macs-brai n-surgery/
Reason is that I changed my Macbook Pro for a new model Unibody one at the same time I upgraded to snow Leopard.
How did you get the data, etc., from the old Mac to the new one?
Not sure if these instructions play nice with Snow Leopard, and frankly I'm a bit amazed this doesn't work smoothly out of the box. People must upgrade their machines all the time, and its only logical you'll want to pick up from your last backup.
If someone who understands about these things tells me there's a good chance that I'll get things working if I'll follow the instructions in the article, I'll give it a go.
No. Those instructions are for a *completely different* problem: if you have the Logic board replaced. Because the hardware on the Logic board contains your Mac's "Ethernet Address," which TM uses to keep one Mac's backups separate from another's, TM starts a whole new "sequence" of backups. It does not cause what you're seeing.
Since +*Repair Disk+* didn't find any directory problems, the corruption must be within the backup structure itself -- the multi-links that TM uses. That means your best bet is to erase the disk completely and let TM start fresh, as in my last post.
Have you ever moved, change, or deleted anything in your backups via the Finder?

  • Snow Leopard released this Friday (28th August)!!!

Ok, so it's finally here... who dares?! I'm tempted on my Macbook as I've got nothing to lose really, but I need to be sure that Logic 9 is still going to run as I do some mobile recording with it. I wonder if we'll also see a Logic 9.01 update to go with it? I'm very curious I must admit.
What will we need to be careful of? Interface drivers? 3rd party updates?

Facts from my test during beta:
1- Logic won't come out in 64bit as the audio drivers are not 64 bit yet, neither are any of the available plugins. So forget that until the vendors follow.
2- Logic 8 and 9 on Snow Leopard runs very very fast, much faster than now, a joy to use.
3- A few of the plugin vendors I tested didn't play well under Snow Leopard, it's not fair for me to say which right now because they may have a fix coming after the release of SL.
4- The thing to be careful and mindful of is well... everything. Install Snow on a new partition, have it transfer your settings over from the partition you have Leopard on, and then reboot. You'll have everything working in no time, and you'll find out very quickly if things are OK or not.
Like I said, some plugs don't work. I can confirm what I know works:
UAD2, Liquid Mix and Apogee Symphony drivers. FXPansion BFD2 and DCAM. DUY plugs (all of them). Waves SSL 4000. iZotope Ozone, Trash, Spectrum and RX. Melodyne 3.2.x plugin and App.
Your mileage may vary, don't run it on a production system yet. Period.

  • QT integration in snow leopard

I have seen similar posts to this one but not an identical one so here it goes.
QT X on snow leopard works well only if I start the application and open files within. However, I have two problems:
    1) if I try to watch anything clinking a file, the machine tells me that I need quick time.
    2) The safari plug in does not work. I does not even work for the movie trailers in the apple live page. I click the movie, select the size, and it does as if it was going to play it...and then it just hangs.
Previous to the os update qt integration was just fine.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,

I have tried logging in as different user (root), I tried 32 bit and 64 bit mode, Installing QT Pro 7, I tried in Firefox, and on another computer at my location running 10.5.8 Apple Special Event play normally. This Snow Leopard installation was done in the following way. 1.) Disk Utilities reformat of the
drive 2.) installed Leopard which came with the Mac Book Pro. 3.) With Software Update I did all the updates (10.5.8) 4.) Installed Snow Leopard.

  • Virus checker for Snow Leopard

When I booted up my Macbook Pro this morning, it behaved oddly. The clock was set to Jan, 2001 and it had forgotten my wireless network. While I'm not sure what caused this, I'd like to run a virus checker on it. I'm already running MacScan 2.0 for cookies and spyware.
What is the virus checker that plays nicely with Snow Leopard?
    Thx1

As Kappy says, it's not a virus. See my [Mac Virus guide|http://www.reedcorner.net/thomas/guides/macvirus> for details on that topic.
How old is this machine? Is it possible that the battery may have run completely out at some point? I believe that there is a separate small battery hard-wired in somewhere that takes care of keeping time if power fails, but if that battery has failed and the computer lost all other power at some point, the clock would reset. Not sure if the wireless would also be affected by that, though.

  • Videos won't play in iPhoto now that Snow Leopard is there

I am finding one thing after another that won't work with Snow Leopard -- my fonts, my trackpad, and now my iPhoto videos. When I double-click on the videos, they no longer open in QuickTime or do anything, they won't play. Any suggestions? (Uninstall Snow Leopard?)
    Thanks in advance.

This is a known glitch between earlier versions of iPhoto and 10.6. The solution is to install QuickTime 7. It's on the Snow Leopard installer disk.

  • Can't play long voice memo after upgrading from Tiger OS to Snow Leopard OS

I have a voice memo that's 1.5 hrs long saved on my computer that I used to be able to play in iTunes & Quicktime, but ever since I upgraded from Tiger OS to Snow Leopard OS, the file will not play anymore. I tried installing quicktime 7 from the snow leopard optional installs but the file still didn't play. I also installed the VLC player which opened the file, but only played 7 minutes of it. When I try to open the file in quicktime it says that it can't play the file and that it is not a movie file, but my file is saved as a ".mov" file. Does anyone know how I can get the file to play again?

  • Downloaded Snow Leopard and now mp3 files won't play or open.. help!

Once I updated my system to Snow Leopard, my downloaded mp3 files won't transfer to iTunes or even play in general, they used to automatically download into my iTunes. Is there a specific setting I need to change?

What happens when you try to play in iTunes?  Do you get any error messages?  Can you play the mp3s in Quicktime or VLC?
If you want iTunes to play your mp3s, the setting for that is inside iTunes Preferences.
Have you tried repairing permissions and restarting your computer?

HELP!! i have a ton of videos of my boys stored in iPhoto..They played fine on my old OSX system (leopard).  However, I just upgraded to snow leopard and then to mountain lion and now i can't open my videos at all anymore.  HELP!!

Can you tell us about one or more of the video files - what are they?  QuickTime?  MP4?  Something else?  How did you create the video files in the first place?
I do a lot of video and when I upgraded to Snow Leopard I discovered that many of the QT videos that I had created previously (via iMovie & Final Cut) would not play correctly in QuickTime X - the bizarre behavior was that QT X acted as if my video files were only audio files!  I reported this to Apple at the time but never heard anything back, and there hasn't been any change in later updates to QT X.
The solution was to (re)install QuickTime 7.  But first look in your Applications > Utilities folder.  When you upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard, the installer normally moves the old QT 7 program to your Utilities folder.  If it's there, try using QT 7 to play one of your video files.    If QT 7 is not there, you can download and install it from here  Make sure you are running at least OS X 10.6.3 before you install QT 7.  It's even better if you make sure you are running 10.6.8 which was the last release of Snow Leopard.

You need to upgrade to Snow Leopard, but don't need to go past 10.6.8 to run the current version of Flash.
