Playing dual layer dvd's with iBook superdrive

I've burned a couple of dual layer DVD's (8.5GB) with my iBook G4 and an external Lacie DVD burner.
I used Toast 7, experiencing no problems at all.
The DVD's play perfectly using the Lacie driver itself, or my Sony DVD player, or even a 10-year-old Pioneer DVD drive on my PC.
But... my iBook Superdrive refused to even read them.
The disk just makes a couple of turns and then the superdrive ejects it with no message.
The superdrive plays perfectly the commercial dvd's, which I know are usually double layered.
Does that mean that superdrive is not compatible with burned dual layer dvd's?

I don't believe the SuperDrive for the iBook is set
up to read/write the dual layer DVD's.
I didn't expect it to write DL DVD's, that's why I used an external burner.
The problem is when reading the burned dvds
Go to your Apple Menu and select "about this mac".
Click on the "more info" button and navigate to the
Disc Burning label. Select it.
If your SD is dual layer compatible you'll see "+R
DL".
It says generically that SD reads DVDs
What speed were you burning the Dual DVD's on the
LaCie?
don't know, really, but Toast is set to burn disks at the best speed:
one was a DL DVD+R 8x, the other a DL DVD-R 4x
it's IMPOSSIBLE that SD can't read dual layer DVDs: commercial DVDs are 6-7GB, they MUST be DL and they play perfectly.
and if it really can't play burned DL DVDs, that's really a shame! >:-Z

  • Can HP 15-d103tx play dual layer dvd or Blueray discs

I would like to know if my HP 15 d103tx notebook can play dual layer dvd's and blueray discs.

    Hi:
Below is the link to the product specs page.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c04206739&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en...
All it states is it comes with a SuperMulti DVD burner.
It will play dual layer disks if you see a small DL on the DVD bezel.
It will definitely not play blu-ray disks.

  • Unable to burn Dual Layer DVD's with Toast

    Hi all,
I'm having issues trying to burn dual layer dvd's with either Toast 10.0.8 or 11.0.1. I keep getting the Interface -50 error and sense key 0x02 error saying media is incompatible.
I have tried dvd's by DataWrite and Elite M and they both show error. It's strange though as I have been using previously purchased Elite M dual layer dvd's of the same spec as these newly purchased ones, and they worked fine!
My dvd drive is a standard OPTIARC AD-7170 that came with the Mac Pro as spec'd.
I am able to burn single layer fine, and dual layers are read. I'm just unable to write dual layer at the moment.
Any ideas? I'm stuck on what to do and what manufacturer's dual layer dvd's will work with this drive. It can just do +R DL.
Could it be I've been unlucky to have had 4 bad batches? I brought 2 x 2 (25 disc) tubs of DataWrite and same by 50 disc tubs Elite M.
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    Ash
P.s. I have tried creating a new admin user account to see if I am able to burn under that. I get the same errors.
P.p.s. "Hopefully" this is just a media issue and I can find some that works again. If not and it is a drive fault what can I do? What writers spec'd same are available internal for my Mac Pro?

When you get an error message that actually tells you something concrete, you should listen to it:
CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM - INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT
... is pretty unambiguous. It's a problem with the Media.
Off-Brand media is the next weak link in the chain. One of their many problems is that they vary wildly from batch to batch. Verbatim media are thought to be the "gold standard". Get a small number of Verbatim Media and see if you can make ONE master on the best in the market. If you can, the problem is in the Media. If you can NOT, the problem is in the process.
Like I mentioned I have never had issue with Elite M before, and I always set Toast to burn "Best" under the recorder settings.

  • Dual layer DVD-ROM in a SuperDrive

I have a dual layer DVD-ROM created on a Pioneer USB dual layer burner. The disc plays fine in the Pioneer, but does not mount in the SuperDrive of my PowerBook or G5 tower. Should the standard SuperDrive be able to read the disc? It can read a dual layer movie disc without problem.
    All the best,
    Tom

I might be in the wrong forum, but what the heck. I have a similar problem. I have a two week old 17" PowerBook G4 with the new Superdrive that writes in DVD-DL. Anyway, I backed up a ton on data from a variety of computers I had around here (20 Dual-layer DVDs) by copying and pasting data to the DVD-DLs using the finder in Tiger. They work fine on the PowerBook but will not play on a 1st generation 20" iMac G5 (1.8 GHz, 1GB SDRAM, running 10.3.9) with a Superdrive. It just spits them out. I thought that older Superdrives could play (but not write to) DL DVDs. Any suggestions on how I can get them to play on older Macs with Superdrives (i.e. 867MHz PowerMac G4 Quicksilver, Flat Panel iMac G4s, and 1st generation iMac G5s)?
    Thanks

  • Using an external dual layer DVD burner with iDVD??

I created a 3 hour iDVD file on a dual 2.0 G5 desktop with a dual layer DVD Superdrive. I have since migrated to a MacBook Pro. Now, when I open the iDVD file, it says there is no DL Superdrive on my system and that it will convert the file to single layer or something like that, with the option to cancel or proceed. If I purchase an external DL DVD burner will iDVD detect it and allow me to continue working with the file?? Or do I have to get a whole other Mac with a DL Superdrive (iMac or 17" MBP)?? The error specifically stated 'Superdrive', so I am not sure if just an external DL will work. Thanks for any help.

Sorry to have to post this here, but your topic "How can I see the bitrate while playing a DVD?" in the DVD SP forum.

has been archived and no one can reply to it.
Thank you so much. Using VLC 0.8.5 to view bitrate was an excellent discovery for those who don't have the cash to buy the DigiGami poducts.
Perhaps you should re-open a new topic for others to respond to.

  • How do I burn a dual layer DVD video with Premiere Elements?

I am trying to burn a video from Premiere Elements to a dual layer DVD.   I choose  "DVD" -- and it seems to recognize my disc -- then I "fit to disk" (the video is one hour  -- then I attempt to burn -- and nothing happens.  I have tried it on my internal DVD and on my external BluRay --neither seems to work

    rross43
If you insert a DVD double layer single sided disc in the burner tray, Premiere Elements recognizes that as such with Publish+Share/Disc/DVD disc. If you insert a DVD standard in the burner tray, Premiere Elements recognizes that for what it is.
The only time you see a distinction for double layer vs standard disc is in the burn to folder.
Both DVD disc types use the same max bitrate 8.00 Mbps. But, the DVD standard capacity is 4.38 GB not really 4.7 GB, and the DVD double layer single sided is 7.95 GB not really 8.5 GB. That has to do with the disc capacity labeling and not Premiere Elements.
Good job with the burn to folder. In a time crunch, you can take the VIDEO_TS Folder from the saved folder and take it to DVD-VIDEO on DVD double layer single sided disc using the ImgBurn program.
But, back to burn to disc....the successful burn to folder is pointing to the burner or the disc itself. What brand disc are you using?
What is the mode of failure for your burn to disc....you say nothing happens. Does that mean you hit the burner button and nothing happens?
We could look at deleting the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file or do a program uninstall, free ccleaner run through, reinstall with antivirus and firewall(s) disabled. But, let us review the burner and discs situation first.
    Thanks.

  • Trouble burning dual layer dvd's with my superdirve

Hello, my question is regarding burning dual layer dvd's on my macbook pro. After finishing up a 5.6 GB movie in DVDSP4, i exported as an image (burned it as a .img) and then opened it up in disk utility for burning. Upon execution, i received an error message that said " the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media." I then tried burning the .img via DVDSP4 as well as the standard drag to disk on my desktop, all with the same luck. When trying the standard drag, drop and burn method (burn folder on my desktop), i received the error code 0X80020022.
After having no luck, i tested my super drive with standard CD's and single layer DVD's which it burned to just fine. I then tried switching media from memorex dvd dl +r's to sony dl + r's, but unfortunately it just refuses to burn to dual layer.
Any ideas as to what might be the problem?
    Thanks.
    Terry

  • Burning dual layer dvd+rs with a pioneer dvd-rw dvr-112 with firmware 1.15

can i do this? i have tried once before and failed, if i have to update firmware do i follow the same instructions as for the dvr-109 as in the below thread/topic? i always us verbatim dvds so that shouldn't be an issue. i notice that dvd-r dual layer dvds are getting scarce and are pricey...... exact instructions would be very helpful if i have to update the firmware would be very very much appreciated as i've heard updating firmware is tricky and risky if not done right proper!!! cheers in advance......

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
    OS X 10.4 supports DVD+R DL burning.
    So does the Pioneer.
DVD-R DL isn't supported in OS X10.4, but is in OS X 10.5.
i have tried once before and failed,
What was the failure? Error reported? What method was used?
Firmware versions up to 1.24 are available, though 1.15 had the improvements for DL burning. 1.21 adds for specific media, and 1.24 improve CD-R support.
    http://wwwbsc.pioneer.co.jp/product-e/ibs/devicee/dev00002r_e.html#f112
If you consider updating the firmware, the method is exactly the same as for other drives, using DVRFlash.

  • Dual layer DVD, help with break point

after reading alot of the previous posts on setting a dual layer break point, it seems the best way is to find the general area of where one thinks the break should be and then put in several markers in that area. My question is what type of markers to put in (ie. chapter, button highlights, dual layer break point)? Should i be able to put more than one Dual Layer break point? DVDSP is only allowing me to set ONE Layer Break Point out of the several points that i put in the area i think that the layer break should be, am i doing something wrong? Also, to avoid this whole trial and error process, can i simply do my "build" without any markers/break points and then burn the VIDEO_TS folder in Toast and let Toast find the break point? By the way, this disk will be replicated in case anyone forsees any problems with Eclipse, thanks for any help!

If after building only one marker is black (not gray) it is the only legit marker and why it is limited. The layer break will be on the DLT where it is set
I had one project that took quite awhile to find a place to put the marker to get a legal DL break point

  • Dual Layer DVD's compability with Settop DVD players

Is there any problems with playing Dual Layer DVD's on a normal consumer DVD Video player?
Is the DVD Video Player able to read the DVD-r DL or DVD+r DL disks at all?

    Hi Chris,
All my previews go out through a bit setting DVD 5 downsized system. It's probably 3 years old now. I must admit until yesterday I had completely forgotten about this. As it's just part of the workflow. From having looked around last night my understanding is currently that some +R recorders now come preset to bit encode for DVD-ROM straight out of the box.
I will also have to look into what Toast is currently outputting. You know the old adage if it ain't broke.....
I have been very slack with respect to my DVD 9's. I simply use toast as I have normally post authored my build folders. But, those good results may be in part due to the fact that pretty much all my product goes to producers and DVD facilities. So it's either going to end up on a relatively young machines or PC's. None of it would end up in a home i would think.
    Good Luck.

  • Dual Layer DVD's not burning with Disk Utility

I successfully created two dual layer DVD's with a disk image that I created in iDVD. Checked both of those disks in a DVD player and both work fine. Now trying to burn more copies with the same procedure, same disk image file, same media manufacturer and all are failing. Any ideas? I can still successfully burn short videos on regular DVD's from iDVD so my burner has not completely failed. I had created a disk image out of the material that I need on the dual layer DVD because it's about 2 hours of video and iDVD was ejecting the disk too early without burning.

Sounds like the burner may have failed. It can fail in a way that only larger items cannot burn. Take it to your nearest Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to have them check it out

  • Will it burn dual layer DVDs

Is it possible to burn (for example iPhoto backup or iDVD) onto the big 8GB dual layer DVDs using my iBook?
I have a 14inch one with a Superdrive which I bought last September. I think it is the same as the ones currently on sale.

The short answer, I think, is no. See replies here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=404207&tstart=15 and here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=260421&tstart=105

  • Sense Error Message when trying to burn Dual-Layer DVDs?

    Hey all,
I am trying to burn a dual-layer DVD disc with the internal drive in my MacBook Pro.
I am getting the same error message from Toast each time I try to burn a disc. I get no response from Disk Utility (it just says "waiting for the disc drive") and Finder doesn't recognize the dual-layer disc when I try to burn in Finder.
I've heard that it may be a media issue, so I've tried with every single brand of DVDs that I can get my hands on. So far, I've tried Verbatim, Sony, and Memorex. I can't find any other brands of media, even at Best Buy?
I've heard that it may be a security update that might have caused this issue. System Profiler says that my machine can burn both DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL.
    What is going on?!??

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The two most common suggestions are (a) try other media, which you've done (and Verbatim normally work) and (b) run a DVD Lens Cleaner disc through it to see if some dirt or dust on the lens it causing the problem. If this doesn't fix it then it sounds like a hardware fault and best to let Apple check it out.

  • Dual Layer DVD drive in Power Mac G4?

    Hi,
I ordered a Power Mac G4 and I have an internal dual layer DVD drive with lightscribe built into it. I installed it in my PC awhile ago and it works fine but I want to know if it will work in a Power Mac G4 running OS X (Tiger/Leopard)? The model number is IDVD16DLS and it's manufactured by I/O Magic. It's a really good drive and I hope it works on Mac.

Optical drives sold by I/O Magic are usually manufactured by any of a number of electronics plants in China. The drive will undoubtedly function in your G4, but it may not respond to booting with the C key depressed or boot the computer after having been designated as the startup disk. I tried a Memorex (LG-manufactured) DVD±RW drive in a B&W G3 (Panther), and even with the PatchBurn profile, the only way to force it to boot from a bootable CD/DVD disk was to immediately close the tray, after it would spin up/down at startup and eject the disk. I removed that drive and installed a Pioneer DVR±RW drive like this one in black or beige. The Pioneer burner boots the computer without the extra persuasion. Tiger is more forgiving of a third-party drive, than the previous OS X versions. As for the LightScribe function, you'll probably need to look for third-party, Mac-compatible labeling software.
