Playing DVD on LaCie External CD/DVD

Is there a way to play DVD movies on my new external DVD drive. When I put in a DVD it says "There was an Initialization error -A valid DVD player could not be found". I have a Quicksilver G4 that didn't have a Superdrive and my internal CD burner was acting strange so I bought a new external CD/DVD Burner (LaCie Dual DVD+RW Drive with the LightScribe feature which is fantastic. Slow to print high quality but fantastic.

put the movie in and open dvd player which is in your other folder in the applications folder.
it should however, open automatically.

  • LaCie External DVD R/RW - can it play regular video dvds on my iBook?

So I've got this LaCie external DVD R/RW drive (designed by Porshe - but who cares?) and I can wiret and re-write dvds of data okay. I use it for backing up my files sometimes, and just extra storage space... But I don't seem to be able to watch a regular DVD movie on my iBook using this external drive (and the disc drive in the iBook is just a CD-ROM that's it.)
So, I'm just wondering if the Apple iBook G3 is even capable of playing a regular DVD video? I have this suspicion that this iBook's Graphics hardware just might not be up to the DVD movie playing requirements?
Is that my problem? Or is there something I can do? Thanks in advance.

Nevermind I just got VLC and that seems to play the DVD alright.
I've had this drive for a little over a year now, and I had basically writen off my iBooks ability to play DVDs because "DVD Player" the application that comes with the O/S said it wasn't possible, well, VLC proved DVD Player wrong.

  • My LaCie external  CD-DVD burner no longer reads DVDs

    Hello
Since the upd my iMac Intel to snowleopard (now 10.6.4) my LaCie external burner (d2) (DVD 16 x 56 x CD, DVD DL) will no longer play a DVD (blank, burned or commercial).
We hear some clicking then nothing ...
The problem also exists on the MacBook of my son.
The profile is well in the file "VendorSupport.drprofile" and it is well recognized in System Profiler and Disk Utility.
The burner box fitted to the LaCie is NEC 3520 A.
The power supply seems to work. The connector type is USB 2.0 or FW 400 in the selection and reading problem arises in both.
The CDs are well read and burned (CD-R and RW).
I confess to being a bit lost to this phenomenon ...
    Ideas?
    Thank you in advance
    Jacques

There are actually optical drive cleaning kits. Often just a spritz of air from one of those little cans of compressed air and into the disk slot will do the trick.

  • Playing DVD in Full Screen on external monitor?

    Hi,
Recently,i have been trying to play DVDs using Apple DVD Player in Full Screen on an external 20 " monitor.
However, when i click something on my primary display on my MBP,apple DVD player(on the external monitor) will exit Full screen and goes into Maximum size.
So,my question is What can i do to make sure Apple DVD Player will retain its Full Screen mode(on my external display) while i continue with my work on my MBP's display?
Any help would be much appreciated...

    Macbook Pro 15.4'   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Core 2 Duo 2.16 GHz

This is a problem for most software on the mac, especially games. My experience has been most software uses the primary - in this case the macbook lcd - as its display monitor. There are a few ways to fudge it to force it on another screen, but quite frankly I find that the only way to use a macbook pro and external monitor is with the lid closed.
This is generally the best solution as the menu bar is always stuck on the primary anyway.
To use the macbook closed simply wake the computer from sleep with an external keyboard or mouse the laptop and the primary will now be the external monitor.
The only real downside is how do I now use the isight????

  • How do I play dvds on hp envy touchsmart 15 notebook with an external player and Windows 8.1.

I have a HP Envy Touchsmart 15 NOtebook PC. I bought an external HP DVD player model dvd600s-H01 5 but I cannot play DVDs.

    Hi @pattyathome
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that you are having trouble with an external  dvd player attached to your notebook.
What is the full product number for your notebook? Please read the following if you need help in finding that.
How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
Does your notebook already have a built in dvd drive?
Did you install the drivers and software that came with the external dvd player? If there was originally no DVD player in your notebook, it is likely that there is no dvd player application loaded.
So in that event I would recommend installing from the software disk with the DVD drive.

  • Problems importing and playing songs from an external cd/dvd drive

I am having problems importing songs on my PC from an external usb drive. What I have is an external combo usb firewire drive hooked up to my pc with a usb cable. (usb 2.0) When I launch itunes, it sees the cd I have loaded but when I go to import the songs, itunes just pops past each song in a second like each song was just a second in length. Then I have some corrupt file in my itunes library. Itunes gets the cd names and titles from CDDB correctly but can't play the songs or import them. I use this pc solely for playing audio, it is a Pentium 4 2.6 with 1GB of ram with build in usb 2.0 on the motherboard. There is no other software installed on the system other then virus software. When I use Windows Media Player the cd is read perfectly fine. I even play DVDs off the drive with no problems too. This problem in intermittent, with different cds. These are all commercial cds not burnt ones that someone made for me. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Toonz - I have exactly the same problem when trying to import songs - itunes does recognise the cd drive and names of tracks etc - it just won't play more than one second of each, or import any more. i did run the cd diagnostic check you suggested - results below - don't mean anything to me i'm afraid - any bright ideas?

  • Do I neeed to download a ap to play DVD's on external player

I have a external CD- DVD, Windows 8.1 It will play CD's but not DVD's. Do I need to download a Ap?

    Hi:
To keep the costs of its operating system down, Microsoft decided not to pay the owners of the DVD codecs for the rights to include them in W8 or W8.1 like they did in Windows 7.
If you do not have Cyberlink Power DVD software (and I'm thinking you don't or you would be able to play DVD's), you can probably install this version if your notebook is from HP.

  • IDVD 08 / external hard drive not burning or playing DVDS?

Hello, my computer does not have a Superdrive so bought a CNM Ultra Slim-line Portable External DVD-RW Drive, so I could burn DVDs on my computer, was told the external DVD drive and the blank DVDs I bought were compatible with computer. When I plug in the external dvd drive to the USB port, with the blank DVD in the external drive, the computer recognizes it and a message comes up with the options to go to iMovie, iDVD etc. When I am on iDVD and then want to burn, it does seem to burn, but there is no noise coming from the external drive, and at the end of the burning, when I put the DVD in to my DVD drive by my television, it just says ''ERR disk.''
When I put in a regular movie DVD into the external hard drive to see if it would play, the noise was there from the external hard drive, and the movie name came up on screen with a disk icon, but then a message came up saying, ''There was an initization error valid dvd drive could not be found -70012.''
    Help!

Does this mean I do not have USB2? If so, is that why the external DVD driver will not burn DVDS or play DVDS? If so, how can I change the USB ports to USB2?
On the description of the external driver it does not say anything about needing USB2 ports for it to operate: http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/cnm-ultra-slim-line-portable-external-dvd-rw-drive- 02553194-pdt.html

  • Doen't play DVDs -either internal Combo drive nor external drive

    Hello There,
When I try to play a DVD with Combo Drive of my iBook G3, sooner or later the picure stops and the computer is frozen– cannot quit the software "DVD player", no reaction given to any button and mouse.
Once I brought my computer to the service, where they said it was a hardware problem and they only could exchange the drive.
Now I've got an external DVD Writer and still have the problem.
(So I suppose it's not the hardware.)
Using VLC instead of DVDplayer, anything is the same. But VLC showed error messages : ffmpg : more than 5 secounds of late video ->dropping frame (computer too slow?)
I cannot believe that the computer is to slow, because it WAS showing DVDs before.
If this information helps : Power PC 750, Processor 600MHz, Memory 384 MB, SDRAM, Bus 100 MHz.
By the way, another problem I´ve got with my Combo is, that it can burn audio CD but no data CD-any trials comes out with an error.
    Can anybody help me ?
    iBook G3   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I guess I'll just have to put a new MoBo in it.
Don't waste your time or money. You'd still be stuck with that tiny low-resolution screen and the wrong aspect ratio for DVD movies. The logic board from the slightly faster FireWire-equipped clamshell is the only other LB that might fit, though from what I've just read at iFixit, it won't. I doubt that it would do much (if any) better than the LB you've got, even if it did fit. A clamshell iBook just isn't the machine to play DVDs on.

  • Unable to play DVD

20 years of PC's and a Mac beginner. Playing commercial DVD's has defeated me. I have installed a laCie external DVD drive and Toast lite 6.1. Can someone explain how I play a DVD please - thanks.

OK I can get this to work with an external drive. I have a Graphite G3 400 with DVD Player installed since it originally had a DVD-ROM in the internal drive. It's running 10.3.9. The internal DVD-ROM has since been swapped out and a Matshita CD-RW put in it's place.
The external drive was originally a QPS 535 FireWire CDRW with a Teac unit in it. I pulled the Teac and replaced it with a Apple 5X ATAPI DVD-ROM. This was a pull from one of many G3 B&Ws that I'm working on. It works like a charm and plays DVDs full screen no problem. I think the difference is the Apple DVD-ROM in the QPS. I've heard that Apple or drives with the Apple logo on them have a "shake hands" firmware/chip that allows them to work with Apple software. So I always use Apple branded drives inplaces where the drive will need to be bootable.
These Apple DVD-ROMs are pretty available and cheap. You'd still have to use Pacifist to install the DVD Player package out of an 10.3.2 installer disk.
The other option is to put a Apple DVD-ROM into the internal drive as Duane suggests below.
If you need info on how to do that eMail me.

  • Playing DVD's in an old iMac?

I have an old iMac, probably a few years old, someone gave it to me. It has the old school blue case with the semi clear front. Seems I can't play DVDs on it, the thing just spits the DVD right back out at me. I guess I only have a CD drive in this thing. Is there anything I can do (short of buying a DVD drive, I'd never put a penny into it) to get DVD's to play on it? Thanks...
    We Are 138

    Hello
I can not help, but I have the same problem. I retired 1996 and because i had worked with apple computers all my business life, i decided to buy an Imac G3 anthracit 700Mhz. This computer had only an CD-RW drive, but DVD were not so important that year. Nowadays it is necessary to have an DVD-drive to install new software. I have Panther 10.3.9 and can not install Tiger because it is distributed only as DVD. I asked in an Apple shop and they recommended an external disk drive and I bought Lacie D2 Dual DVD Drive. When I tried it out at home it was not possible play DVDs because my Computer did not have the necessary software -apple DVD player-and because my Imac did not have an DVD drive originally it was not possible to install this software with panther.
Where can i get the necessary software ?
I guess this problem will apply to all owners of elder computers and Apple should provide an solution for it

  • Mac Mini Slow playing DVD from Network

    Hi,
I was just wondering is anyone else has experienced slow dvd play with their mac mini's.
Playing from the SuperDrive (dvd player) or Firewire DVD player is NOT a problem. however I have a couple of backed up DVD on a LACIE network drive using CIFS or AFP(Gigabit although my mini is 100FD) and on a Linux server (NFS mount)and the DVD's will not play smoothly.
They are very choppy and unwatchable. I have also tried using VLC but that is even worse.
I 1gb Ram in my mini, I also had this problem under os X 10.4 as well as 10.5. I know that apple say that an intel processor 1.6 is needed for interlacing, but just playing should be fine.
My Suse Linux IBM T42 which is old has no problems playing the movies, but I want to play them on a 23inch Monitor. (the problem also occurs on my 19inch Monitor)
CPU wise. it never gets to 100% but when it goes over 70% the problem seems to occur.
I have tried to shut down all possible applications and disabled spotlight. this improved the playing experience a little.
Any thoughts on this would be great.
    Thanks
    Pete

    HI,
The local disk is about 40% full, I upgraded it to a 160GB drive. (plus leopard was therefore a complete fresh install on a new drive)
If I play the files from the local drive then there is no problem. I also noticed that if I use a local USB to play the movies then this works. But when you only have 2 x usb ports on a mac mini, and the fact I don't want my mini to have control over the disks (so the mini can be turned off etc) as my house mate also has a mac and would like to stream music and I like to have access from my Linux Laptop.
I also noticed that the Mac Mini was very slow at accessing my NFS mount.
I have also done the normal network tests such as forcing Full Duplex 100mb or allowing Auto etc. (also my house mate has the same problem using Mac book pro with a wireless connection) The switch is not busy at all, and until two days ago the only two devices turned on were the Mac mini and the lacie drive
It is very frustrating, I want to upgrade to an iMac next month, but would have like to keep the mini as a media player. I like front row and dvd player they rock as applications. (except for the current issues I am having)
My switch is definitely up to the task. I got a netgear. When my laptop and server (old P4 PC running Linux) are plugged in they are fine with streaming and copying files.
I do notice that the Samba protocol on apple seems quite an 'expensive' over head with resources, but it still seems to work better than AFP. (from my Lacie drive)
I have a suspicion that the problem is a mixture of DVDplayer that was not designed to play dvd's from the network and maybe the protocol stack on OS X? I guess the next stage is to sniff the network and see if packets are getting dropped.
Thanks for any pointers so far.
    Pete

  • Satellite A40-151 DVD drive will not play DVDs

hi my dvd drive will play music cd's but when i try to play a dvd it just makes a beep and nothing happens i tried windvd and it comes on but everything is blurred and still wont play a dvd

    Hello John
Please dont be mad on me but in your posting there is no question or something just small report that DVD drive will not play DVDs.
Anyway, if I am remembering well your unit is about 2 years old and has probably DVD-CDRW (Combo) drive. In my opinion there is no much to do. If the drive has problem with original DVDs I presume that there is laser calibrations problem and the device must be replaced.
I dont know how old is your unit exactly but please check if the warranty is still valid. If yes contact service partner in your country immediately. The drive should be replaced for free. If not you must replaced it on your own. If the drive replacement costs too much I recommend you to use external device (I do it with my old Satellite). On this way I can use newest and very fast super multi DL devices and also create own DVDs.
You can also try to find already used DVD/CD-RW drive and replace it alone. If you need assistance by replacement please write again.
Once again, dont be mad on me. I am ready to write my opinion but it is really annoying when someone write just one sentence and nothing more.
    Good luck!

  • My iMac (24-inch, Early 2009) will not play DVDs.

My iMac (24-inch, Early 2009, purchased new from an Apple store) will not play DVDs.  When I attempted to open the DVD Player file in Utilities I got the following error message: ‘A valid DVD drive could not be found. [-70012]’  I've downloaded nearly every software update that Apple has notified me has come available. It's been several years since I last used the CD/DVD player, but i was quite surprised and unhappy today when it spat out every DVD I inserted.  Anyone know how I can resolve this problem?

    Hi there,
Your machine should be supported, the requirements for Mountain Lion are:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
    You must also have:
    OS X v10.6.8 or later
    2GB of memory
    8GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
Also, you might like to try unplugging any external drives, and backup ones, and try again.
