Playing DVDs from another zone

I am an American doing my PhD work in New Zealand. I purchased my Macbook in the US, so it plays my dvds from home fine. Since I will be living in NZ for the next 3 years it would be nice to play NZ dvds also. I have tried using VLC freeware but it doesn't seem to recognize the NZ dvds I have tried so far. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Why is VLC the key? Don't get me wrong, I love it, but your Apple DVD Player will play the MTR'd Video-TS files just fine.
But I believe your original question related to ripping to the hard drive. In that case, I prefer one-stop rip and compression using Handbrake. Output files are plenty fine viewing in Quicktime fullscreen on a MBP - it's only 15 inches after all - at around 1/7th the file size. I have roughly 60 movies on my MBP instead of six or seven TS files.
I do the same with my iPod, then just plug the iPod into the hotel room TV and watch them that way.
If I'm simply going to use MTR for a file size same as source, I'll just bring the DVDs or rip them to blanks.

  • Trying to authorize my iTunes to play music from another account

I was trying to play music from another account in my iTunes. I got the message that my computer isn't authorized. I entered the email address and password of the account with which the music purchased and got another message that says  "This computer is already authorized. Including this one, you have authorized 4 computers out of your available 5."  Yet, I am still unable to play the music in my iTunes. Suggestions? Thanks.

There's a couple of ways to get through to the authorisation controls in the 11.0.x versions.
The control is still in the Store menu, but first (if you're using iTunes versions 11.0.x) you might need to bring up the menu bar to see the Store menu.
If you're using 11.0.x, click on the wee boxy icon up in the top-left corner of your iTunes to see the "Show Menu Bar" control, as per the following screenshot:
Then you'll find the control in the Store menu:
Alternatively, if you don't want to bring up the menu bar, it's still possible to get into the authorise controls via nested menus accessible from the wee boxy icon. Here's a screenshot of where to find them:

  • Playing DVD from Mac to Apple TV

    Hi there,
I recently purchased Apple TV and would like to know if it is possible to view  my wedding film on dvd from my mac to my apple tv.
When i turn on Apple TV Airplay mirroring the screen on my mac and my TV is grey and white checkered and it won't play, only sound.
Everything else like home sharing works fine.
    Appreciate any advice

Apple have crippled Airplay assuming you are trying to send copy protected content.
    Two options:
1 - Use another DVD capable player eg VLC
2 - Assuming the DVD video is not protected, Google the free Handbrake and convert the DVD video footage to AppleTV compatible h264 (there are presets). Add the video to iTunes - it will go to Movies under Unknown Genre - right click and use Get info and adjust metadata.  Handbrake will only handle video conversion not menus.

  • Mac Mini Slow playing DVD from Network

    Hi,
I was just wondering is anyone else has experienced slow dvd play with their mac mini's.
Playing from the SuperDrive (dvd player) or Firewire DVD player is NOT a problem. however I have a couple of backed up DVD on a LACIE network drive using CIFS or AFP(Gigabit although my mini is 100FD) and on a Linux server (NFS mount)and the DVD's will not play smoothly.
They are very choppy and unwatchable. I have also tried using VLC but that is even worse.
I 1gb Ram in my mini, I also had this problem under os X 10.4 as well as 10.5. I know that apple say that an intel processor 1.6 is needed for interlacing, but just playing should be fine.
My Suse Linux IBM T42 which is old has no problems playing the movies, but I want to play them on a 23inch Monitor. (the problem also occurs on my 19inch Monitor)
CPU wise. it never gets to 100% but when it goes over 70% the problem seems to occur.
I have tried to shut down all possible applications and disabled spotlight. this improved the playing experience a little.
Any thoughts on this would be great.
    Thanks
    Pete

    HI,
The local disk is about 40% full, I upgraded it to a 160GB drive. (plus leopard was therefore a complete fresh install on a new drive)
If I play the files from the local drive then there is no problem. I also noticed that if I use a local USB to play the movies then this works. But when you only have 2 x usb ports on a mac mini, and the fact I don't want my mini to have control over the disks (so the mini can be turned off etc) as my house mate also has a mac and would like to stream music and I like to have access from my Linux Laptop.
I also noticed that the Mac Mini was very slow at accessing my NFS mount.
I have also done the normal network tests such as forcing Full Duplex 100mb or allowing Auto etc. (also my house mate has the same problem using Mac book pro with a wireless connection) The switch is not busy at all, and until two days ago the only two devices turned on were the Mac mini and the lacie drive
It is very frustrating, I want to upgrade to an iMac next month, but would have like to keep the mini as a media player. I like front row and dvd player they rock as applications. (except for the current issues I am having)
My switch is definitely up to the task. I got a netgear. When my laptop and server (old P4 PC running Linux) are plugged in they are fine with streaming and copying files.
I do notice that the Samba protocol on apple seems quite an 'expensive' over head with resources, but it still seems to work better than AFP. (from my Lacie drive)
I have a suspicion that the problem is a mixture of DVDplayer that was not designed to play dvd's from the network and maybe the protocol stack on OS X? I guess the next stage is to sniff the network and see if packets are getting dropped.
Thanks for any pointers so far.

  • How to make a self-playing DVD from FCP project of 75 minute film.

A Quicktime film has been made in Final Cut. It is about an hour and 15 minutes long. It needs to end up on a self-playing DVD.
Maybe this is a question for the FCP boards (or for DVD SP, which I don't know well): What's the approach to get this project to DVD?---having it look best on the DVD. Are there compression best practices?

Or you may be able to make a Kiosk mode DVD from a QT file / folder using iDVD. (btw ...I've done this successfully thru iDVD6 but I have not yet tried it under iDVD08):
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4764361&#4764361
Please note that this approach is the only way I know of to make a DVD (w/in iDVD) that plays by itself and with no menu whatsoever. Hence the DVD will always play in a continuous loop until you press stop or eject on the remote. Or if you prefer you can also use Roxio Toast which has a similar feature.

  • Why can't I play DVDs from my mac to my Apple TV

I can't play a DVD from my iMac to my Apple TV, why and what can I do to fix this

If you own the DVD, why not use HandBrake or something similar to rip to your iTunes library?  Then you WOULD be able to play to your AppleTV with no issues.

I would like to play DVDs on my new highdef TV from my laptop. The only connector that I have is the S-Video cable, which I don't want to use. Is there any way to somehow output the display using component cables?

What about your highdef TV - no DVI-in?

  • Playing DVDs, from new Camcorder models

Many of the new camcorders record to small DVDs. Can these be put into my powerbook? They suggested at the store that carousel drives should work but front loading like on my Powerbook may be tricky.
Should I have any other concerns such as type of DVD or has Sony out software on theirs that encumber for Mac users? If the technology is not there or these are not compatible with Apple at this point, I'll stick with mini-DV.

Will these play in a regular DVD player?
Your post doesn't say what kind of camera it is, so it's hard to say. Surely there's information on the web that would say whether you can or not.
Can I get the movies from the camera to the computer
to use with imovie or final cut express.
Hard to say without knowing what kind of camcorder it is.
If it is a finalized dvd can I get the movie from
the camera to the computer to use it in imovie or
    final cut?
Possibly, but not without a lot of hassle. If the DVD plays in a regular DVD player, it's recorded as MPEG-2 video. MPEG-2 video is not really made to be edited. It can be done, but it's not exactly the highest quality and it's a lot of work for the computer. You'll probably end up having to use another program to convert the files off the DVD to a more edit-friendly format. MPEG Streamclip should be able to do that, though I've never used it with anything but files captured from tape cameras.
Should I change it for a
full size dvd writing camera? Is this information
    transferable to imovie??????
Again, if it's MPEG-2 compression (in other words, the DVD plays in a regular DVD player) you'll have to convert the files for editing.
You might be better off re-posting your questions in the Final Cut Express or iMovie discussions, as there might be people there who would have a better idea what you could do with the new camera. Just provide more details about the camera itself.

  • Problem to boot up installation DVD from another optical drive.

Hello, i am trying to install the Snow Leopard OS to my MBA (10.5.2) using the optical drive of my iMac (Lion). The moment i power up the MBA (with the option button being pressed) after i log into the wi-fi network, the only boot device i see is the Macintoxcv hard drive. Which is the MBA's hard drive.
I dont see the Optical drive of my iMac with the installation dvd inside. They are both in the same wi-fi network and the sharing is on.
If i log into the MBA i am able to remotely run the DVD but the system says that my hard drive is corrupted and i need to boot from the dvd and that i shouldn't worry because the problem will be resolved during the installation of the Snow Leopard. But i cant boot from the DVD as i previously stated.. ANy ideas?
PS. Under application/utilities on my iMac (the source DVD) i dont have the option Remote Install Mac OS to clic on.

Apple has restricted booting from optical drives to only internal ones, also I hear you can't install Windows from a external optical drive neither.
The solution in your case is to create a 10.6 install USB
    http://www.maciverse.com/reinstalling-os-x-on-macbook-air.html
    http://www.maciverse.com/install-os-x-snow-leopard-from-usb-flash-drive.html
You have to decide if you want to backup files off the machine, take your chances and upgrade your present 10.5 (which has your free iLife on it) installed copy (stable or not) to 10.6 then to 10.6.8,   or
if your 10.5 installed is not exactly stable, then backup files off the machine and erase and reinstall 10.5 (which has your free iLife on it) and then upgrade to 10.6 then to 10.6.8, then Disk Utility > Repair disk (from the 10.6 USB) then install 10.6 programs fresh and files from backup or
erase the 10.5 install completely from the 10.6 USB and install 10.6.3 (no free iLife)
iLife doesn't come on the 10.6.3 Retail Upgrade disks, also you can't use another Mac's 10.6 disk to install SL on your machine.
If your 10.5 installed is stable, then consider a backup of files off the machine (disconnect any other drive) and simply upgrading 10.5 to 10.6, it will keep all your presently installed programs, although a few will require updating.
To boot off the USB, you need to hold the option key down.
Now on Mac's with a DVD drive, when the SL 10.6 disk is simply inserted, one runs a program that reboots and upgrades 10.5 to 10.6
Since you will be booted from the USB, you will have to select to install 10.6 onto the 10.5 drive, it only does that and not touches your third party programs or your files. (but backup anyway in case things go wrong)
You neeed this disk to create the USB from, can only be ordered online now as I hear.

If your considering upgrading to Lion from 10.6.8 Appstore, let me give you some valuable advice.
10.5 Intel machines are rather dated, if it's not a 64 bit processor Lion can't be installed (no Intel Core Duo's, they are 32 bit)
Your going to have a dated video card, Lion is slower than Snow Leopard.
You need a minimum of 2GB of RAM, 4GB+ is reported to be better for Lion.
Lion does not allow you to run your 10.5 programs in Rosetta like 10.6 does, so Lion requires all new software.
In my opinion a dated machine having to buy all new software is a waste of money, spend the $29 for Snow Leopard and pretty much everything you presently have in software investment will work.
My opinion is to save Lion for a new machine, your machine will run better on 10.6 than 10.7 glitch issues.
Check this database for programs that are ready for Lion

  • I can't play dvd from idvd in home dvd player

I did a project in imovie 11 and add that project to idvd 7.1.2 and when i burn the dvd in a dvd-R or dvd+R it will play on any computer but not on my home dvd player. what is the problem??

To add to Bengt's recommendations follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • How can i play video from another service?

i have 2 services, fe A and B, and i want to create a player in service A to play a video component. I have tried to put 2 video components in service A but nothing was played.
in this case the code used was:
    mediaLocator = new MediaLocator("dvb://1.1.1.1");
    player2 = Manager.createPlayer(mediaLocator);
I tryed it in another way, with "ServiceContextFactory.getInstance().getServiceContexts();"
but service context array length was 1 (and there's 2 services). I think the problem is that my service/app does'nt have permisions to catch te neighbour service context or video component.
some one can help me to do this?

    well i found the way!!
first, i created a player instance from current service. i stopped it, and made a player.deallocate() to later make a player.setSource(). passing a media locator.

  • Creating auto play DVD from Captivate output

Hello: I have been asked to create a auto run DVD of a
Captivate tutorial I created. Is it possible to create a DVD or
only a CD? Any thoughts would be appreciated. New to the forum.
    :)

Hi bmac99 and welcome to our community
I think that in order to do this, you will need to first
convert your Captivate content to a video format. (.WMV, .FOB, .MPG
and others) You could do this by importing the Captivate project in
Flash and creating the video output from there. Or you might use
something like SoThink SWF to Video Converter

Hi, i've got a macbook pro with leopard and a bootcamp partition with windows xp.
When i play videos (divx or dvds) from my superdrive under windows, i have audio problems (like noise), but the same videos are fine in leopard or if i play them from another storage, for example from usb.
Perhaps it's a problem with last bootcamp drivers..or maybe there is something wrong with my superdrive. i remember this wasnt an issue when i bought my mac (less then a year ago).
Thanks in advance for the help.

    I'm having the same problem.
I had a video file that I had to convert for my iPod & iPhone, after doing so, only a white video screen and just the audio.
