Playing DVDs on players

I have started to noticed something, that whenever i make a DVD, whether through Encore or anything else, our older DVD player doesn't support it, only our other, newer one does. The DVDs i am making are on DVD+Rs. I always wondered how the big companies like MGM and Disney all make their DVDs able to play on all DVD players but i cannot. Are they using a certain type of media to do so, or is it a setting on their software? If it is a setting, can i do it with Encore? I'm wondering because i'm finishing up a DVD to sell, and i'm putting them on Hp DVD+Rs, and i'm starting to dread if my clients will be able to play them at all.

DVD+R is a relatively new and unofficial format. Especially older set top DVD players may not support it at all.
What MGM and Disney are doing is releasing their titles as
replicated (pressed) DVDs. This is the kind that any set top player can use. You can have your DVDs pressed too, but a replication run usually starts with a minimum of at least 300 copies.
With duplicated (burned) DVDs the best you can do to make them as compatible as possible with set top players is:
Use a
maximum bit rate of no more than 7Mb/s.
Let Encore convert the audio to Dolby Digital (AC3).
Use good quality DVD-R media, e.g. Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden.
Keep your burner's firmware up-to-date.
Burn at the lowest speed your burner allows. (With modern burners that is usually 4x.)
Never use adhesive labels on your discs.

Do you want to burn a data DVD or a Movie DVD? If it's the 2nd one, then get iDVD or another movie dvd making application. Most computers don't have that capability
"naturally", you have to go out and get something that'll let you do that

  • Dvd only plays on certain players

i burned several dvd's using dvdsp they will play on some players but not on others. why is this?
the footage was ripped from a PAL dvd edited in final cut then output as animation codec @ 29.97fps imported into dvdsp encoded and burned any info would be very helpful. thanks

    Dear birdandtiger:
I just finished on of the free lectures at Apple Soho. I highly suggest it for the answers to your questions. Just stop in or go online to get a list of all the lectures. Soho has Final Cut and DVD Studio Pro on thursdays at this point but that could change.
I have found that I have a G4 and one of the earlier Apple Super Drives (DVD burners). = - RW etc etc I have found that my apple G4 and Super Drive will only burn Apple brand DVD-R discs. And I was told at the apple lecture these will play on all DVD players (not so with DVD+R that came out later).

  • Is this true?? NTSC dvd projects will play in PAL players

The good news is: You can just send an NTSC disc. Any PAL set top DVD player capable of playing DVD-R discs can also play NTSC discs. All that is needed is a fairly new TV, built in the last 8-10 years or so.
So is this true? I can send my project made in idvd to a country that uses PAL and my NTSC project will play?

  • Sound Distortion playing DVDs with Audigy2 Va

Last time I have problems playing DVD movies on my computer: The sound is distorted
by scratches like an old vinyl. I am using a SB Audigy 2 on Win XP. I have tried several software DVD players, reinstalled the old drivers from CD and cleanly installed teh newest drivers via internet auto update. I also tried to update my VIA chipset drivers, deactivated several background programs etc.
I found out that disabling the sound acceleration in DXDiag removes the sound distortion but then the sound (speech, effects) within a movie are extremly quiet compared to the music.
Another thing: First I deinstalled completely the software and drivers from my audigy to replace it with new ones. Then I had to notice that the new Audio Control Center does not support the option to send bass-frequencies to my subwoofer. I could set the speakers to 5. but had no chance to get my subwoofer working. At the moment I have status quo by using new drivers, but my old creative applications for configurating my speakers.

Ijust checked the preferences, go to Disc Setup and on the bottom in the Audio section, check off the box that says "Disable Dolby dynamic range compression" see if that helps.

  • Windows Media Player 12 under Win 7 Pro 64 nolonger able to play DVD

    Hello TechNet
"Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card.  Try installing an updated driver for your video card."
It seems that I have recently joined the chorus of MS users who have a Media Player DRM issue, where DVD's that would work perfectly well in WMP12 and MCE are nolonger being recognised. The error message above is displayed now, every time a commercial DVD
movie is inserted into the DVD drive where WIN 7 Pro 64 autoplay is used to open WMP12, The instruction to update video drivers is also not the solution.
Considering that I have until recently, been able to play DVD with my current NVIDIA driver 314.22Whql (now updated to 332.21Whql) and my DVD drive remains exactly as before, the Codec's installed with Win7 Pro 64 WMP 12 are unchanged and were working
fine. I do not know now what has caused the removal of DRM or the suggestion that my MPEG2 codecs can nolonger allow access to  commercial DVD content.
I have tried all the suggestions raised about this issue from other MS users and MPV's in the forum, I have renamed the DRM folder and reset Windows Media DRM as directed. I have checked for a suitable MPEG2 codec/decoder on my system of which I have
several choices, including the one installed with Win 7 Pro 64 / WMP 12.
I have checked to see if I have a region issue with my DVD drive, and can confirm that the DVD drive will play DVD content when Playing DVD with "NERO 9 Showtime", this proves to me that the codec/DVD decoder is working in
my system, I then try Win 7s MCE (Media Center) and WMP12, the result is a black unresponsive screen in MCE, and the error message noted above in WMP with a black screen in the player.
I would like to know if MS are working on a rectification for the issue, as none of the proposed solutions deliver any functionality back to MS default DVD players. Is there an update in the works to provide a definitive solution for WMP12 and MCE DVD functionality.
Could you provide any new ideas, other than those already proposed to regain DVD function under MS default DVD programs.
    Cheers Jeff

    Hi Sengupta,
Yes I have already tried - Reset DRM using the method described in a post by another MS MPV here in the forum.
This is the method I used :
    1. First open My Computer go to Tools>FolderOptions>View> uncheck >Hide Protected Operating System Files >
so that I can see the DRM folder and its contents.
    2. Go to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\DRM  >Delete the contents of the DRM folder, these hidden files and the Cache folder with its contents. (Cache,
    blackbox.bin, drmstore.hds, IndivBox.key,
    IndivBox_64.key, v2ksndv.bla, v3ks.bla,
v3ks.sec) DRM folder empty ready for DRM Reset via web link.
    3. Go to start menu Find InternetExplorer > right Click icon select > Run as Administrator > Blank Web page opens > I then paste the link provided (http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/Indivsite/en/indivit.asp)
into the Url space > click Enter > a web page for Windows Media Technologies (Security Component Upgrade) opens.
    4. I then click on the 'Upgrade Button' and wait for it to search for upgrade components (Progress Status: Upgrading security components.... ), A download dialog then appears asking me to proceed. I then click 'Upgrade' and wait for it to
    finish downloading & installation
(Progress Bar). . The install then completes saying the upgrade was successful I then click 'Done' close Browser and restart Computer.
    5. I then recheck inside the DRM folder that I had erased - the new downloaded files and Cache Folder with contents are all back inside the folder, as expected.
    6. Upon restart I place a DVD that I know was working before into the DVD drive and wait, the DVD autostarts WMP12 with the onscreen DVD Disk navigation menu appearing. I then click 'Play' with in the menu option, to begin the
    Movie.
    7. The resulting error reappears when clicking Play
"Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder,
and video card.  Try installing an updated driver for your video card."
I will try once more to Reset the DRM using the Tool you have linked to, and follow your instruction exactly. Will see how it goes!  ............stay tuned
It would be much appreciated If you could research  which MS update has broken DRM, the recent updates which I can think of right now would be :
nVidia - Graphics Adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.3, Other hardware - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 275
now replaced by Nvidia v332.21Whql Drivers.
Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.1 on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 for x64-based Systems
    Possibly,
Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 64bit ( which I have had to remove, rolling back to IE10 to allow use in another Forum without errors and glitches). something about IE11 Browser is not right, maybe a security component from IE11
has interfered with DRM (Just guessing though)
But I think it is more than likely a security update that was downloaded and installed at the same time as these other major Microsoft Update offerings.
    Cheers Jeff

  • Play dvd created with iDVD won't play in QuickTime

    Hi!
Just a simple question:is it possible to play the dvds I created with idvd in quicktime? and if so, how?
If not, are there any other players one could recommend for detailed video analysis and coding? Ideally I need to be able to forward to a specific time and to take notes at the same time (would need that for my research project).
I can not open the dvd with QuickTime, even when I set it as the default player in system preferences.
The only thing that works are VCL and the pre-installed DVD player.
I have QuickTime Player Version 7.1.3.
and the movies are downloaded from my digital camera with iMovie 6 and then exported and burned with iDVD 6
    Many thanks!!!

Just a simple question:is it possible to play the dvds I created with idvd in quicktime? and if so, how?
Yes and no. QT does not play DVD material (VOBs in VIDEO_TS folder) natively. In order to play the video portion of the "muxed" data stream requires the purchase of Apple's MPEG-2 QT component ($20). Even then, most commonly used "muxed" audio formats are not supported. Since QT does not properly handle/convert this material, Apple included the DVD Player as you have already mentioned. This application will play both DVDs and VIDEO_TS folder VOBs on your HDD.
If not, are there any other players one could recommend for detailed video analysis and coding? Ideally I need to be able to forward to a specific time and to take notes at the same time (would need that for my research project)
MPEG Streamclip (a free MPEG based third-party application), will also play VOB files (single or multiple file series), allow scrubbing to a particular time, select segments, and, if you have the QT MPEG-2 component installed, perform minor edits, apply "on-the-fly" filters for bightness, contrast, saturation, volume, de-interlace, crop/scale, etc. as it converts to QT compatible formats (if your iMovie projects are no longer available) or third-party formats for which you may have other installed components. While it will provide limited "stream" information, I would not call it an analytical tool. (E.g., provides audio/video information like formats average data rates, audio sampling rate, etc. but not graph/read things like an instantaneous data rate -- something I have been seeking.)

  • IBook superdrive won't play DVD it burned

We have a new iBook w/ a superdrive. We used it to burn a DVD with no problems except the iBook won't play it. The DVD will play in home DVD players and other Macs that we have tried but not in the iBook that authored the DVD (w/ iDVD). The DVD will mount - show up on the desktop - and the DVD Player app will launch but not play. Says it is an unsupported format or something like that.
    Any suggestions?

Did you use a DVD -RW?
In this case switch to -R, +R or +RW - sometimes DVD Player refuses to play DVD -RW media with the above mentioned error message.

  • How to play DVDs in Quicktime Pro

I recently purchased QT, and QTPro. I was trying to transfer DVDs to my 60GB Video ipod, but I cannot even open any movie in Quicktime. Now my goal is just to get a DVD to play in quicktime. I choose file->open file, and select the drive my video is in, and there are three folders, JACKET_P, VIDEO_TS, AUDIO_TS, and the only one with anything in it is the VIDEO, but I open it and nothing is listed unless I change the "files of type" (prompt on bottom of open dialog box)from movies to all files. When all files are listed, I get a bunch of VTS_## files (and they are either VOB or BUP type), and a VIDEO_TS file, and it is an IFO file. If I choose the last one, I get the error message -2048: the file is not a movie file, and the same happens for all the files. I hope you can shed some light on my problem. [QTPro is registered, my PC does meet all the requirements, and I have tried numerous DVDs. If I right-click on the movie in windows explorer, and choose properties, then autoplay, I am given the option of what I would like to use to autoplay the movie. QT is not listed, nor can I browse.]

I don't think I've seen Apple or anyone else advertises QuickTime as being able to play DVDs, so I'm not sure why you assumed that it would. To answer the original posters question, I'm not particularly familiar with how to do it under Windows, but it is most certainly possible to convert video from DVDs to a format that can be played on the iPod. There are several tutorials around the web that will tell you how to do it step-by-step.
(BTW, Apple has this to say about DVD playback in QuickTime:
"Can the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component play back DVDs?
The MPEG-2 Playback Component can play back MPEG-2 files on non-encrypted DVDs. Professionally produced, commercial DVDs (such as Hollywood movies) are usually encrypted with special anti-piracy software, called Content Scramble System (CSS). In order to view these DVDs, decryption software is required and is included in DVD players. But decryption software is not included in QuickTime or the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component.")

  • Advice on how to make Windows Media Player play DVD's not the Tosh player

I do not want to use the pre-installed Toshiba Media Player to play DVD's, I want to use the installed Windows Media Player. I cannot change the default DVD player to WMP in Control Panel as the only options are either Toshiba's or Nero's player.
WMP can play CD's, MP3's etc but cannot even read any DVD in the drive. Anyone got any advice on how to do change this?
It;s a Toshiba Satellite Pro C850 with Windows 8 installed

The free KLite Codec pack which equips the OS including Media Player for DVD decoding, thus all your currently and even most future installed players. http://codecguide.com/
It comes in varying sizes but even the smallest version enables WMP for DVD's
After installing KLite, you right click the DVD drive within Windows and select the "Open With" or "Play Disc" menu option and select Windows Media Player.
You can also just use the Windows Run Box / Search box and enter
    dvdplay
which activates windows Media Player DVD menus.
Microsoft hasn't always included DVD playback in Windows and then started offered it as a fee based upgrade for XP and Vista, before finally including DVD playback in Windows 7 in what some Microsoft insiders said was an apology for Vista before removing it again in Windows 8.

I haven't changed any settings regarding region codes

You may have run discs from different regions, these would be commercial DVDs. If so most DVD players need to be told what region the disc is from. Have you done this by chance, if you are not sure look at the region numbers listed on the commerical DVDs you have and see if some use different numbers.

  • Playing dvds with vob formats on mac?

my mac pro os x 10.6.8 uses vlc and real time players which don't play dvds with vob format. The mac dvd player 4.6 was recently installed, but it fails to work on mac. Dvd player 3.1.1 also failed as an older version. Whhat would be the right mac dvd player version to use on my mac?

That seems to be the general consensus from what i am reading, memorex is terrible media! Something else to note, the DVD played fine on two other MACs that were running OSX on 10.6.5 and 10.6.6. the issue is on the machine that is running 10.5.8. Could it just be a compatibility issue with the operating system not being up to date?
BTW, the stills are PPT slides converted to JPGs, and yes i am importing them as slide shows.

  • Can't play DVDs with Totem

I cannot get Totem (Movie Player under GNOME) to play unencrypted or encrypted DVDs. Although it works fairly well with mplayer, I'd rather use Totem. Whenever I insert a DVD, Totem starts automagically (as it should) but spits out an error saying that a plugin is missing. I've installed every required gstreamer plugins along with libdvdcss (for encrypted DVDs). I know I could use VLC or GMplayer or Totem-xine but frankly I'm baffled that this won't work under Arch but works fine under Ubuntu (I dual boot between these two distros). Thanks in advance.

I think it has to be said that playing DVDs is not one of totem-gstreamer's strengths at the moment.  The Movie -> Play Disc 'Whatever' menu option just gets me the error about not having the appropriate plugins, even though I have the whole collection installed.  The command line "totem dvd://" will play a DVD but without either DVD menus or the ability to successfully change the audio track (so no viewing Night Watch without learning Russian first, for example!).
Swapping out totem for totem-xine ought to get working DVD playback with menus; however, if you're going to install xine-lib then you might as well go the whole hog and install xine-ui or kaffeine, both of which are much better movie players IMHO.

  • My MacBook Pro Isn't Playing DVD-R's

Are MacBook Pro's able to play DVD-R's?
    Because mine definitely can't
I've tried a number of different DVD-R's, and they play fine on an assortment of other players like my actual DVD player, my DVD Recorder, and my XBOX 360. I'm not entirely sure why it doesn't play on my MacBook Pro unless it's not suppose to...which seems quite unusual if you ask me.
Any help would be greatly apprecaited.
    Thank, You.

    See if this helps.
    Media.Media.Media.
    The problem is multi-dimensional.
First check in your particular profiler on EXACTLY what type(FORMAT) of DISK's your burner will burn.
Next please do not just randomly go out and buy a spool of 30 50 or 100 disc's because they are on sale.
There is a HUGE difference in the type format disc's you buy
There is also a HUGE difference in the BRAND you choose, some are junk.
There is also a HUGE Difference in the SPEED of the media you choose.
If any one or a combination of any of the 3 mentioned above can cause burn error's or no burn at all or spit the disk out.
So it is a good idea to do a little homework on your Optical Drive and see just exactly what it is capable of and what it will use for media.
    (ONE LAST NOTE)
Many of the Media Manufactures are becomming aware that many of the Apple Burners are having trouble with there Media. Maxell has just come out with a brand new one that is. Maxell 16X DVD-R.
The key is read the packaging. this new media tells you that it will burn at any speed from 1X through 16X, and it works very well on the older Optical Drives. I also opt to use the individual that include the cases there seems to be much better quality, not like that of the spools.
Remember Apples Drives to date are much pickier than those used in the PC community.
    Cheers Don

  • Portege 4000 - XP installed - cannot play dvd's

I have installed XP as a clean install on a Portege 4000 which previously had 98SE on it.
Now I'm unable to play dvd's in Windows Media Player and am getting a message that it needs an MPEG-2 decoder, however Microsoft are transferring me a site where I need to pay: [http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/plugins.aspx#DVDDecoder].
Is there any way around this?
The cd is working ok and there doesn't seem to be a need for an acoustic silencer at the moment.

    Hi
If you need an MPEG-2 decoder then I would recommend installing some codec packages.
+K-Lite Mega Codec Pack+ contains all needed (and more) codecs.
    You should try it.
PS: Why you don't use any 3rd party players? For example the *VLC player* is for free and it's a great player. It handles all possible files.
