Playing European DVDs on a North American computer

Hello,
I am a Canadian who is in Belgium for the year studying, and as always I have my trusty computer in tow. It is a Toshiba Satellite and has no trouble playing North American DVDs, but won't recognize the ones from Europe. I was wondering whether there is there some software I need to get, or whether I'll have to buy an external DVD player in order to use my computer to play European DVDs?
I'd welcome the advice of anyone who knows about this.
Thanks very much.

Hi Anna,
To change the region on your DVD-ROM :-
1. Click on MY COMPUTER
2. Right click on your DVD drive
3. Click on PROPERTIES
4. Click on the HARDWARE tab.
5. Highlight your DVD drive and click on PROPERTIES
6. Click on the DVD REGION tab.
7. Select your current country or manually enter the region that you want (region 2).
As Flo rightly says you only have a limited number of changes before the selected region is made permanent.
regards,

  • Dvd plays on dvd players but not mac computer

I burned a short film onto a dvd using DVD Studio Pro. When I play the dvd in a dvd player, the menu and tracks play fine and in accordance with the simulate menu in DVDSP.
However, the dvd will not play on my macbook pro or imac using dvd player. The menu comes up, but "play" has no result. "Not Permitted" comes up.
    Details:
    Menu is assigned first play.
Menu is simple: a single button "play" linked to asset (track 1, 6 min runtime).
Video Asset is MPEG-2, 7.7Mbps, 2-pass, 16:9 Anamorphic, from Compressor
Audio is Dolby Digital Professional 2.0.ac3, from Compressor
DVDSP preferences all set to SD, 16:9 Letterbox
    Burning to DVD-R
    Has anyone encountered this?
    Thanks,
    V

Well not that anyone was involved with this thread but I rebuilt my dvd menu from scratch and it seems that there were some buttons that i had brought in but had disabled (and never bothered to clear from the menu because they were invisible.) I guess they were confusing the computer when trying to hit play.

  • European power cord into North American Macbook

    Hello forum!
My girlfriend has a Macbook purchased in Canada, but she is now moving to Sweden. Instead of having to use an adaptor, I am wondering if it would work to simply purchase a European power cord?
Any ideas would be much appreciated!
    / Marcus

Apple doesn't have product part numbers for these cords, but it should be possible to get used ones. A new adapter would also come with one of these cords. In the end it might be easier to just get the little adapter plug (might also need to be used) along with an extension cord.
iFixit sells used US extension cords, although I'm not sure where one might find one compatible with Swedish outlets.
    http://www.ifixit.com/Apple-Parts/PowerBook-G4-AC-Adapter-3-prong-Extension-Cabl e/IF113-033
It might be easier to simply use a passive adapter. Something like the following:

  • Will North American style chargers work in European outlets?

    Hello,
I have an iPhone and a Macbook Air that have the standard North American chargers. I am moving to Lyon, France to attend university. They have told me I may need an adapter and converter so these can work in their European electrical outlets. Does anyone know if they are needed? If so where would I get them to fit my Apple products, and how much would they cost?
    Thank you

Apple sells or sold a World Travel Kit with adaptors for everywhere. You may also find them at AAA outlets, computer stores like Radio Shack, and some department stores.

  • When i tried to hook my macbook pro up to a projector to show a dvd, the screen on the computer and projector screen went black as if it were trying to connect. yet it didn't show up. The dvd played when it wasn't connected to the projector. any ideas?

When I tried to hook up my macbook pro to a projector and play a dvd, the dvd wouldn't work. I would only get an error message. The dvd worked when it wasn't connected to the projector but doesn't work when it's connected. It just shows a blank screen as if it's trying to connect. Also, the connection works when I don't play the dvd. Any ideas?

    Hey there lynmrigg,
It sounds like have an HDMI to VGA adapter connecting your MacBook Pro and your projector but the screen on your computer goes black and no image appears on the projector. I would use the troubleshooting in the following article to help resolve or isolate the issue here, named:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
    Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,

  • North Americans Only. Europeans Not Allowed!

Has anyone managed to get InContext working out side of America? Particularly with a .co.uk or .fr or even a UK based .com address!
If Adobe insists on discriminating against the rest of the world by (currently) restricting InContext to North America... Surely, it should also restrict it's advertising / promotion to that region. Is just me or does anyone else think it's a gnats manipulative to "Shout from the rooftops" to all and sundry (Europeans included) about this all singing, all dancing wonderful new technological addition to dreamweaver that's going to revolutionize our lives. Yet then add the cravat that says "Hey... Forget it unless live in North America. Even North Americans who have access to the service have rebelled over the fact that it might cost a bit... I could really go on and on... and on a bit more over this point, but I'll resist the temptation save to say that at least you (North Americans) have something to complain about.
Save a thought for us "erm Allies.." denied the chance to even evaluate the product. Despite being fed the same encouragement to buy it
"So what if you bought CS4 just for this much lauded feature! Suckers! Read the small print next time." This Is The Land Of The Free"... (to rip you off.)
On first blush, It would appear that Adobe's claims for this feature bring new meaning to phrases "Ramped-Up" and "Over-Hyped" even for those actually living in North America. I'm told, by those who know, that the product is a barely beta, prematurely released bug ridden mess at the moment that thinks that Spry is a misspelling of a popular soft drink.... but that's not the point. Even if that is the case, it's the seeming resurrection of segregation that troubles most.

Seriously, politics aside, what is the logical explanation for this move anyway? Living in europe I have a bunch of overseas connections concerning my work as web designer - from hosting services to every other imaginable service connected with web design like optimization and analysis tools - and I NEVER have had any problem whatsoever in using those services the way they were supposed to be used, and, honestly, given the nature of the world wide web network I seriously dont see any obstacles to put regional limitations to such products????
Maybe someone from adobe would be able to reason this adequately?
And the only company and product that from some peculiar reason is limited to north america only is from a company that one would really expect it to be able to make it global and also be able to thoroughly support it globally.
Instead the north americans got a beta version from what I hear and whilst I was considering it as a good possibility, even if it became payable, once they made it proper and working I bumped into befuddling piece of information that the service will be only available in n. america.

Go to the Map mode in your iDVD project and make sure the blue bin at the left is empty.  That's where you drag slideshows to if you want the DVD to open immediately to that slideshow and bypass the menu.
If there is an item in there drag it out.

  • HT1476 Is the 5w North American charger (house line to USB) compatible (with a plug adapter) to European (240v) current?

Is the North American 5w charger (house line to USB) compatible with use on European (240v) power if a proper plug adapter is used? In other words, can the charger deliver proper output if it is supplied with 240v, instead of 120v, input?

    Yes.

  • DVD doesn't play on Microsoft computers, only on Apple computer & DVDplayer

When I burn a DVD using DVD Studio Pro4 I can play it on my MacBook Pro and my DVD player, but not on my Microsoft computer. Do I need to change something in the settings when I edit the film/ transform it to a Quicktime Movie file, compress the file or burn it to DVD?? Or do I need to download a certain Mediaplayer for my microsoft (Windows XP) computer in order to play my DVDs?
Thank you very much for your help!
    John

If you're using Windows Media Player on the Windows system for playback, try another player. Windows Media Player isn't very good for DVD playback.

  • Can a UK MacBook run North American operating system dvd?

I inherited a 2008 MacBook Pro from a family member in the UK (I live in Canada). Unfortunately, he forgot to give me the original operating system disc for it. I recently found some errors with Disc Utility that require me to do a disc repair from the OS disc so I went and bought a new copy of Snow Leopard to upgrade my system, and to fix the erros.
Unfortunately, the disc won't mount and just keeps spitting back out at me. I then borrowed a copy of Leopard from my boss and that did the same thing. I am wondering if the fact the machine is from the UK and I am trying to load North American OS discs is the problem.
Can anyone tell me if this could be my issue and what, if anything, I can do to get around it?
    Thanks,

"Unfortunately, he forgot to give me the original operating system disc for it."
Can he ship them to you?
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support for a nominal S&H fee. _*You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.*_
You may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your country/location to find the contact number. Here's a list of links to all of those -

  • I can play my dvd-r recording on my tv - why won't it play on the computer

I can't play my dvd on my laptop but it plays fine on my dvd/tv - what could be the problem?

    Hi,
First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
    Windows 7
    Vista
Check if the drive will now play your DVD.
If it still doesn't work, click the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, click the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now plays your DVD.

  • Can I swap North American power plug on ipod charger for European one??

    Hi there.
My sister is taking her 5th Gen iPod to Russia from Canada (we use North American Standards for plug shape and 110 voltage, for US users interest).
I am curious if she can purchase (online or in Russia) an adapter for the prong portion (that can be removed) of the iPod power adapter to fit that region of the world.
The voltage portion (going from 110V to 220V) is taken care of by the power adapter itself.
I am assuming there is not an Apple store in Moscow (yet) but Heathrow Airport (on the way there) may have Apple products?
    Any thought would be great.
    Thanks.

Apple sell an international travel kit for the adapter but it's a bit pricey especially if you don't need a full set of plugs: Apple World Travel Kit

  • Playing US and European DVDs

I have spent the morning reading through this site trying various options... but have not been able to piece together an answer to what I need to do...
I have a G5 imac and I have DVDs from Europe and USA. DVD player says that I have 2 times left to change the region code ... this is a pain. I simply want to be able to play the DVDs I have without restriction.
I read through the discussion threads and I have downloaded VLC to try - it didn't work, I don't want to run a program that risks locking my drive forever or decreaing the quality of my DVDs, I don't want to buy an external DVD player - I should be able to do that on my imac.
I don't care about why this historically has been a problem...... I just want to play my DVDs ... simple as that.
    My drive details are :
    Manufacturer:     MATSHITA
    Model:     MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-825
    Revision:     DBN7
    Serial Number:
    Drive Type:     CD-RW/DVD-RW
    Disc Burning:     Apple Supported/Shipped
    Removable Media:     Yes
    Detachable Drive:     No
    Protocol:     ATAPI
    Unit Number:     0
    Socket Type:     Internal
What do I have to do that will work?
    I hope soemone can help.
    Bill Mullen

    Hi Bill,
Sorry that you're still having problems with this. My drive is set at Region 2 (as I live in the UK) and I have no problems playing dvd the way I described in my previous post. I play Region 1 and 3 discs all the time without too much trouble. I put a region 1 dvd in to play this morning and I got it working fine with both VLC and XinePlayer so I don't know what your problem could be I'm afraid. VLC is being actively developed and the osx version of XinePlayer is quite new so can be a bit buggy.
    My combo drive is a MATSHITACD-RW CW-8123
I'm on a G4 1.2 Ghz iBook and I also own a 1Ghz emac which I also watch multiregion discs on. Perhaps it is something to do with your hardware configuration and the way these programmes play the discs.
The only other solution I can think of would be to use mactheripper to copy the disc to your hard drive (this will remove the region encoding), but this is a pain when you should be able to watch the films you want without having to change anything.
Sorry to not be of any further help. Maybe there is someone else with the same setup as yourself that has tried what I mentioned?
    Best wishes,
    Janet

  • DVD Drive will not recognize any movie DVD disk in the drive - thus will not play any dvd movies.

HP G71 449WV dvd drive will not recognize any dvd disc that has a movie on it. Will not play movies, keeps saying to insert disc when there is a disc in there.  It will recognize a dvd data disc or a blank dvd, it just will not recognize any dvd movies.  I've tried the microsoft fix it, downloaded new codecs, using different dvd playback software but none of that works since the drive will not recognize there is even a dvd movie in the drive.  Computer is out of warranty.

Hello crollinsphoto1, welcome to the HP Forums.
It appears that you're not able to play movie DVD's in the DVD player in your notebook. I will try to assist you with this.
I'd recommend starting with this document:
Resolving DVD and Blu-ray Movie Problems (Windows 7).
Also, are these purchased DVD's or burnt DVD's?
Do the movies play in other sources? (DVD player, other PC)
Let me know how this goes.
    Thanks.
