Playing H.264/AAC MOV files on G4 1ghz Powerbook
Hi all,
I'm not sure which forum is best for this question. I have a series of training videos, QuickTime mov format, that I need to watch for my work. Unfortunately my computer is only a G4, 1Ghz which doesn't seem to be able to handle the files. The audio plays fine, but the video only plays about 1 frame in every 100 or so.
When I view the info on the MOV files it indicates that the file uses Codecs H.264, ACC. Some initial research I did indicates that I need a dual processor to playback these files.
I'm wondering if there is a way to convert this MOV to another Codec so that I can play them on my computer.
Any and all input is much appreciated.

You will need a dual processor to best view HD video. They will still play on a single processor but the playback will be slow and stutter (as you have noticed).
You can try Handbrake or VLC and see if they will convert to lower framerate/quality

BobDVDSP only accepts a fairly narrow range of file types when it comes to importing.
For video, that means files that are in editing codecs (like DV/DVCPro), if you want DVDSP's internal encoder to process them. Otherwise, if you want to encode elsewhere, you must present it with either an MPEG-2 file (usually preferable) or an MPEG-1 file. Since your source file is smaller-than-the-norm frame size, MPEG-1 would have worked for you. Though DVDSP, only accepts 23.98 or 29.97 frame rates in NTSC land. (of course, for PAL projects, 25 fps is cool)
In terms of audio, .aiff or .ac3 are acceptable. -

H.264 HD MOV file in dvd studio not importing?
I have an H.264 HD video (1,440 x 1080, 16 x 9). I was able to import into FCp and export out to quicktime successfully yet when I attempt to import this file into DVD Studio it shuts down as it tries to import, throwing an error? Any ideas.
I'm having the same problem when attempting to produce an HD DVD as recommended by Rick Young.
I have no difficulty in burning an HD DVD using MPEG compression, but I'm unable to get DVDSP to accept an H264 file created using compressor (H264 for DVDSP setting). The .mov file when brought into DVDSP4 is seen only as an audio file; it plays as video in QT and also in iDVD as expected. Can anyone point me in the right direction, please?

QuickTime no longer plays certain MP4 and MOV files
After upgrading from 10.6 Snow Leopard to 10.9 Mavericks, I've noticed that all the MP4 files taken with my Samsung smartphone no longer play in QuickTime (or with Quick Look), whereas they played just fine in Snow Leopard. The MP4 files use the H.264 codec. Some other MP4s I have, which use the same codec, will play in QuickTime and Quick Look. I've also found some older MOV files (using the SVQ-3 codec) that don't play now.
Has anyone else encountered this? Is there any fix, or does it perhaps require an OS update? Since I skipped OS 10.7 and 10.8, I don't know what the situation was there.You may have better luck in the Quicktime threads.

It seems to support everything that it did before Mavericks (including Flip4Mac & Perian codecs), what is different is that the OS uses AVFoundation not Quicktime, the former doesn't support additional codecs therefore there is little hope of getting Finder previews for files with unsupported codecs. -
My iPhone 4 (iOS 4.3.5) can't play my protected AAC Audio files
When i try playing an older song i have purchased in iTunes, of the "protected AAC audio file" type, my iPhone just skips it. And this is on both my new acount and my old acount. I made two playlist to test this issue, and the older "protected" files does not work, but all the new "purchased" files work fine.
I should think this is a software problem, and more people are experiencing this, but i couldn't find any ohter threads with this issue...

powerbook G4 / 12' / 867 mhz Mac OS X (10.4.10)I am experiencing consistent crashes with Quicktime, Safari, Soundtrack Pro and FCP. I can not create a new audio track or open a previously created audio file (or export an audio file from FCP to STP) with out all programs immediately crashing. Also, as with many others, I can not load or view any online quicktime movies without Safari crashing. I have tried most of the suggested fixes without solving this haneous crashing issue.
Any suggestions to solving this work stopping evilness would be greatly appreciated.

How do I get my movies to Itunes, so I can play them on my Television through MTV?
Sorry, thought this was a MAC support web site. I have a MAC bok pro, Time capsule and apple TV all recently bought and trying to figuere out how ot use them properly. Yes the files are and will be .avi until I figuere out how to convert them to a compatible file as you suggested (.m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats) a third party does nto tell me much, can you please be specific as to how to convert them and then my original question how to put them in Itunes so I can see th movies on my TV through apple TV. If I buy quicktime 7 pro, will it help me load h.264 encoded .mov files in PREL13?
Presently in PREL13, when I attempt to playback any of a group of about 100 video clips all encoded with h.264 in a qt.mov container, they skip or halt, initially the video, then the audio as well. Rendering does not help. I installed the latest version of regular QuickTime, and the video play is the same. I don't need to do any extremely complicated editing here, but I can't really do any if I can't reliably determine start and end points, or really establish video content at all. I cannot pause or seek or really anything. It's possible that my old slow computer just can't hang. Video plays acceptably in QT regular player, seekable, pause/play works fine.
Will there be any advantage to buying the pro version? What would my work flow look like? Could I skip intermediary file steps and work from the original video files?So unfortunately, I don't know the camera settings.
I only bought quicktime because I thought it would help me work with these videos.

The file extension is .mov. I didn't entirely follow the other stuff. As I said, the two programs are reporting different information about the same file.

Playing other than Quicktime mov files
How do I get Quicktime to play Windows Media files in a full screen mode. I have the Flip forMac plug in but can't figure out how to change the settings to full screen mode. I also downloaded Windows Media Player 9 but can't figure out how to get files to work on that. I downloaded Real Player and got it to work in the settings but not WM files. Does anyone know how?
These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
It is known to work in the great majority of cases with Safari 3.0.4, QT 7.3 and OS 10.4.11. (If you are running Leopard, ensure that all plug-ins have been updated for OS 10.5)
Assuming you already run Tiger versions OS 10.4.9 or above (this has not yet been verified with Leopard) and have Quicktime 7.2 or above, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
RealPlayer 10 for Mac from http://forms.real.com/real/player/blackjack.html?platform2=Mac%20OS%20X&product= RealPlayer%2010&proc=g3&lang=&show_list=0&src=macjack
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
Perian from http://perian.org/
Adobe FlashPlayer should first be uninstalled using the appropriate uninstaller available here: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=2 and then the latest version obtained from here: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash and installed.
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.)
In earlier versions than QT 7.1.3 in Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
You should also ensure, if you are running Tiger 10.4.11 or Leopard, that you have downloaded and installed the correct version for your Mac of Security Update 2007-009.1.1, which also deals with the Quicktime/Flash issues you may have experienced, such as the '?'. What happened was that both Quicktime as well as Adobe FlashPlayer tried to play the Flash video at the same time. This no longer happens. (N.B. Security Update 2007-009 1.1 requires both a restart and a permission repair.)
If you get problems with viewing video on a website try moving this file to your Desktop:
Hard drive/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/QuickTime Plugin.webplugin
and then restarting Safari. If all now works, you can trash that file.
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/
Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them) to enable Java.
Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz, and that you have selected 'Built in Audio'.
Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
You should also consider having the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not. -
Avid MOV (H.264 codec used) files wont play
Hi folks,
I have inherited a vast amount of H.264 code using-MOV files which were generated by Avid Media Composer and which will view fine on one MacBook Pro but not on another MacBook Pro of very similar specs and with the same OS.
Now- the one they will play on has VLC, QT Player 7 and RealPlayer added to it as well as having Final Cut Pro installed. Does anyone know which one of these is making it possible to view the Avid generated H.264 codec MOV files?

The Canon DSLR MOV footage seems to edit very well in PrPro CS5 with the DSLR Preset. Might be worth an upgrade, if you shoot much.
Though probably not containing anything that you have not already done, the links in this ARTICLE might have useful tip, or two. I have tried to keep this list filled with every new reference that I could find, but am sure I have missed dozens.
Also, there are tons of new threads on the forum on DSLR footage and CS5. You might wish to locate and read a few of those, to see the experiences of other users with that footage and CS5.

Flash Player 10.1 crashing in Safari when playing H.264 .mov files
Since installing Flash Player 10.1.53.64 on a Mac OS X 10.6.4 system, WebKitPluginHost in Safari Version 5.0 (6533.16) crashes every time when playing H.264 Quicktime movie.
We have disabled hardware acceleration and tried other things to no avail. If we play .flv movies, the plugin works ok.
Here is a crash log. This crash is very repeatable and crashes in the same place every time the movie is loaded.

That plugin version installed is actually the HW accelerated beta version Gala: 10.1.81.25 (The current version is 10.1.81.75). I would recommend installing the official release, since the Gala version does have some compatibility issues. You can download the latest version here: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

I have my AppleTV looking at my Mac's iTunes to play files found in Movies.
There are a couple that do not appear in the list of movies displayed. I noticed that they are .mov files.
One is a small sized movie - 320x240 Quicktime movie file.
The other is one I was very interested in. Created with Canon 5D Mark II it created a .mov file 1920x1080 H.264 Quicktime movie file.
I noticed its seems that all the movies that are listed are mpeg-4.
What't the issue?

mov files are containers for video and can contain variously encoded formats.
You can play .mov files if they use the right codecs, but AppleTv cannot paly everything and in addition even with the correct codec, the files must be encoded within specific parameters to work.
You'll see from the specs that AppleTV cannot playback more than 720p resolution at 24fps officially - your 5DII files exceed those specs - they would need to be converted to playback.
The 'small Quicktime movie' probably uses an incompatible codec/bitrate - what is it? -

Hi, everyone. I'm pretty new to Macs, having got a MacBook a couple of months ago. I just made my first dvd using iDVD, and it played perfectly in preview, but it has all kinds of playback problems. In addition to my main feature, which I made in iMovie, I included a few .mov videos from my digital camera, created a slideshow using iDVD, and, for kicks, put a single image of my cat with a caption exported from Power Point (for Mac) to play before the title menu. (Ah, yes, the newbie likes to play with new toys!)
Problem 1: I placed the newly burned disc in my mom's HP laptop to see if it would play, and we chose Real Player to play it. At first nothing would play, but we tried a couple of buttons, and then the dvd started. But, instead of the pic of my cat I expected, one of the .mov file began to play. It then went on to the title menu as it was supposed to. However, none of the buttons would respond to the mouse or the keyboard.
Problem 2: Wondering why that was going on, we tried the Windows Media Player, QuickTime, the HP QuickPlay player, and a 4th player on her laptop I was unfamiliar with. None of them worked. I even tried ejecting and reinserting the disk each time, Finally, Real Player would not play the disk on a second try.
Problem 3: I put the dvd in a dvd player hooked up to a t.v. The same incorrect .mov file played, followed by the title menu. I started the Main Feature (iDVD movie, 30 minutes long); it started, but then after a couple of minutes, the video just stopped. I hit play again, and the same wrong .mov file played again. Any time I went to the title menu and clicked to play any of the .mov files or the slideshow, the same single .mov file played.
I am using some DVD+Rs 4x that my friend gave me (the videos are for her). They are the CompUSA brand, which she apparently uses all the time. I've never had a dvd burner before. I encoded for Professional Quality, chose Single level dvd, and used widescreen aspect ratio in NTSC mode. There are 46 minutes of content in the project, and the little arrow on the Capacity meter is just a little over the halfway mark, still well within the green. The content size is 2.43GB; I have 111.53 freespace.
If anybody has any idea of what when wrong, I would appreciate it. I have double- and triple- checked everything I could think of, and read every help topic I could find, and I can't find anything that I did wrong.

My suggestion is that you use the 'crawl before you walk' and 'walk before you run' approach.
Don't try a 'kitchen sink' project before you have cut your teeth on a couple of simpler projects. If you don't want to waste a DVD, just create a disk image file (an option under FILE in iDVD) and play it with the Apple DVD Player application.
The only sure way to test your DVD is with a set top DVD player hooked to a TV set. There are too many strange variables associated with the many Windows DVD playing applications.

It sounds like you put the files in the wrong locations within iDVD. (Look at the MAP view for positioning.)

Would not consider QT (.mov) files a "proprietary file type" these days. Instead, think of it as a "propietary envelop" which can contain any of several different audio/video format combinations. They can, for instance, contain MPEG4/AAC or H.264/AAC format movies which will play on you iPod. On the other hand, they could just as easily contain MPEG4/AAC or H.264/AAC movies which, due to their settings, are not compatible with your iPod. Depending on on the specifics of your individual digital camera, you are more likely to have an MPEG1 muxed movie or an MPEG4 (non-AAC) file. Neither of these formats would be compatible with your iPod and only one (the MPEG4) could be converted to an iPod file using QT, QT-like, or by applications relying on QT Tools. The MPEG1 file requires a MPEG based third party application for conversion. Once you know what file format you are starting with it is easy to select the proper application to perform the appropriate conversion if required.
