  • Playing Home Videos on Apple TV

    Hi,
I have a few movies on my laptop in .mp4 format which I can easily watch on iTunes on my laptop. I recently purchased Apple TV 3 and tried to play those videos via airplay with no success. I tried plying the video file on my laptop iTunes and then selecting airplay to have the output as Apple TV but the spinning busy logo just appears before my request times out, and then I tried directly playing the video using the apple TV remote and going into Home Videos but once again, all I receive is the spinning icon.
So using HandBrake I converted the file, firstly by selecting the Preset function and then Apple TV 3. The m4v file has finally downloaded and I have added this to iTunes. It plays fine on my laptop but when I try to play it on Apple TV I get the same issues.
Occasionally when I watch the video via iTunes and the select airplay, the last video still appears on the TV but nothing further plays and a spinning busy icon remains in the bottom left.
Should I change the HandBrake preset function or am I doing something else wrong?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi griff,
Thanks for taking the time to look at my query. Unfortunately the troubleshoot didn't help.
As mentioned, the video plays fine in iTunes on the mac and the AirPlay option is always there, but when I select the Apple TV option it just goes straight to a loading screen and then after two minutes the Apple TV screen goes back to the menu as the request times out. My mac's iTunes is completely up to date, as is the software on the Apple TV.
I have tried a variety of video files, all of them work on iTunes and half of them I have used Handbrake to attain Apple TV and Apple TV 3 friendly versions - but Apple TV just cannot play them.
Do you have any other suggestions I could perhaps try?
    Cheers

Yep. I installed Lion this morning. Open Mail. All is good. Went to video on the Apple's homepage and my whole computer froze up. I couldn't even shut down the computer properly. I just had to shut it off and restart. :|
Although, no "missing plug in" prompts were coming up for me. Just a frozen (brand new) iMac.

  • Can I play home video on my ipod touch?

Can I play home video on my ipod touch?

So, the only way to watch home video in ipod touch is via itunes? Because in fact i'm trying to use my ipod touch as a video monitor for my DSLR camera while i use it for filming. I thought i could use the hdmi adapter for ipod touch, but everyone tells me that it might not be possible, so i wont buy it without knowing if it is possible or not. I wonder if it is phisicaly possible, so all we would need for that is someone to develop a softare to use the hdmi adapter to watch a video into an ipod. I say this because my camera has a hdmi video out, but it could be with simple RCA cables too. Someone think it is possible?

You don't need Flash or any other third-party software to view any content on apple.com.
From the Safari menu bar, select Safari ▹ Preferences… ▹ Security and check the box labeled Enable plug-ins.

"I tried to change the settings in Quicktime Preferences in the streaming tab but it didn't change anything. Still getting the same problem."
What changes did you do & did you restart your computer afterwards?
Have you tried a different browser?
Download the video & then view the Keynote. See if you experience the same issue.

  • I've downloaded quicktime but every time I try to play a video on the apple website using internet explorer it asks me to download quicktime. If I use safari it works fine. Any suggestions

I've downloaded quicktime but every time I try to play a video on the apple website using internet explorer it asks me to download quicktime again yet if I'm safari it plays fine. Any suggestions?

That sounds like IE wants you to install the QuickTime ActiveX control.
Go back to the page you're getting the message on. At the bottom of the screen, can you see a long rectangular box asking you to allow/install something? (Sorry, it's been a while since I've seen the box in question, so I can't recall the precise wording.)
If so, allow/OK in that box. After the ActiveX control has gone in, can you see the videos in IE?

  • Playing Home Videos from iTunes

    Gday All,
We are new to Apple TV and are still working through exactly what we can and can't do. We have several Macs in the house and 1 PC all with iTunes 9 installed. The Apple TV can see all the shared libraries (ie the computers running iTunes) and we have been able to play music from iTunes using the Apple TV as the 'output' device.
I would like to know if it is possible to create movies (like home movies from a video camera) and import them into iTunes so that they can be played on the Apple TV. Basically this question came about because my daughter recently took some video while on holidays and thought that if she put them into the movies folder in iTunes she should be able to play them via Apple TV on our plasma TV. Unfortunately Apple TV doesn't even see the videos.
Does anyone know how to do this?

Yes you can watch home video on the tv. Your video needs to be in the correct format which is:
    Video formats supported
H.264 and protected H.264 (from iTunes Store): Up to 5 Mbps, Progressive Main Profile (CAVLC) with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 1280 by 720 pixels at 24 fps, 960 by 540 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
iTunes Store purchased video: 320 by 240 pixels, 640 by 480 pixels, 720 by 480 pixels (anamorphic), or high-definition 720p
MPEG-4: Up to 3 Mbps, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 720 by 432 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
If the video file is imported into itunes, you are pretty much well on the way. Ensure that after adding the file to itunes that it is tagged properly (ie as a movie) and that the library has been synced. If the video still cannot be seen or played by the tv, select 'convert selection for apple tv from the advanced menu.
If this doesn't work, you may need a third party conversion tool, but try the above first and we'll take it from there.

  • Playing quicktime videos other than apple trailers

Hi everyone,,,I just got a Touch, but can't play quicktime videos on my site or any other, besides the ones on the apple trailers page. Is it normal, do I need to update the software????? Thank you for your help...and Happy New Year!!!
    This is my site:http://web.mac.com/germandelamoneda/iWeb/Site/Home.html

yes, you can watch videos on webpages.. You go to the webpage and instead of seeing the vdideo on the page you will see a little play button, you press that and it opens the video up in a player...
I only tested it on 1.1.2

  • I cannot get my Macbook pro to play all videos (specifically the Apple tuto

    Hi,
I hope someone can help me!!!
I recently purchased the a new Macbook pro (13inc) and having trouble watching videos. After downloading two applications (Dixv Player, and Flash player) in particular after reading the forums here, I can now watch Youtube clips, and films. HOWEVER - I went to go onto a tutorial on the apple website and it wouldn't play. I can hear the audio but there is no picture When I click the video tutorial it opens the video in Dixv.
    Really hope someone can help!
    Thank you in advance.
    Johnny

Thanks so far for your help Andy.
The main problem I got is that I want to be able to play all videos from Apple tutorials, to other downloaded items / videos from various sites. I have deleted the Divx programme as suggested, however, I then cant play other films.
Im in a bit of catch 22 situation, ay? If I delete Divx I can watch apples tutorials but cant watch a load of other videos.
Ideally (hence why i got the Macbook Pro) I would like the play all videos!!!???
Thanks again for your help Andy and any other suggestions are much appreciated, or, if you could direct me to where I may be able to find more advice.
    Thanks again.
    Johnny
    P.S
There must be a way whereby my Macbook pro can find the appropriate programme (ie, when clicking on a video link) to play the tutorials, through Quicktime player for example.

  • No Home Videos Option on Apple TV

When I click on Computers, I used to see Home Videos, where I have around 200 rips, and converted VHS etc. However, since the latest iTunes update, this option has vanished and with it my access to these files, except they remain on iTunes.
I have searched and learned by selecting the get info on each file and changing the category to Movie, that I can access them there, but I liked the Home Videos option and it'll take a long time to move them all individually. I can't see that anyone has suffered the same problem lately.
Does anyone know whats going on or why this may have happened?
Its worth saying I am on version 12.0.0.117 of iTunes and up to date on ATV, have tried resets etc and having the trouble with two ATV's. I am running the Beta of Yosemite on my Mac that holds everything. Connections are hard wired through my router and I have no issues with all the other ATV functions.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I discovered this same problem the other day after updating to the Yosemite PB3. I updated my ATV in hopes that would fix the problem but it's still not working for me. However, thank you very much for the suggestion of changing the category to Movie. Not a solution but a definite positive workaround.

  • Can't play home videos made on ipod touch 4g  through apple tv 2

The videos downloaded from itunes work, but I bought the apple tv so i could watch my personal videos made with the ipod touch 4g, 1 out of 10 tries it works after exiting the camera and going back in but it only allows one video to be watched.

LOL OK for some odd reason now I can't access my videos made with ipod touch 4g through the photos icon. The "Albums" title sits on top of the "camera roll" folder making it impossible to touch and access it. Anyone else have this problem? I think I will just return my apple tv 2, it's just been frustrating.

  • IPhone home video slow on Apple TV. Fix or workaround?

Sorry to say I'm very disappointed short videos recorded on our iPhones are very slow to load to Apple TV and play on actual TV. I've read this is, generally speaking, the norm and you simply have to wait for it to load. Maybe we're naive but we just expected it to be, more or less, instantaneous. We've checked Bluetooth is on and the wi-fi network is kosher and all the other stuff mentioned in forums and, well, this seems to be it!
BTW this also occurs with Airplay Mirroring, if that makes any difference. And also BTW, we have been streaming video from the net successfully.
My question is, please, are we missing something? Would this improve if we bought some other gizmo? How would, for example, Airport Express help?
I have just watched some videos 'the old way'. With a cable from the iPhone to Composite TV cables... ho hum.

No idea if that's free or not but several useful free converters of unprotected legally owned files include:
MPEG Streamclip (may need an MPEG-2 pluging for Quicktime)
Handbrake (used to be frowned upon as a 'ripper' but now more a general file converter that can't directly read any protected material)
    Videoredux/Punyvid (previously isquint and visualhub)
    amongst others....
having said that converting files is a real chore and loses quality apart from hogging your CPU all day. If you have an Xbox (or if you don't) check out Xbox media center as an option.

  • Whenever I play youtube videos on my apple tv the youtube logo and menus are superimposed on the image.  Any suggestions how to see just the video?

I am unable to figure out how to view a youtube video without the youtube logo and the menus superimposed over the image.  Any suggestions?

Found the answer on my own; restart apple TV and menus no longer appear over videos and while playing music.  However, viewing streaming video on airplay is not ideal.  Sometimes the image freezes on the TV while it continues on my macbook.  Also, sometimes the sound comes from the tv speakers; other times it comes only from the computer.  Never know what will happen when I watch a streaming video.
