Playing iMovies on a Windows PC

Probably a simple one but I've made a movie I want to show at work where we only have Windows PCs.
I burnt the movie to a CD but it won't play on the PC - it also won't download from .Mac Gallery
What do I need to do?
Many thanks

Hi Karsten
This is an odd one, though, isn't it? I have uploaded a movie to Mac Gallery and all my Mac-using friends can see it OK, but NONE of my Windows-using friends seem to be able to get the movie to play. And they all have the latest version of Quicktime for Windows and are running XP. It seems simple enough - it's a QuickTime movie on a website. Why won't it play for them? Is there something I'm missing here? Is there something Apple is missing?

here in ol' Europe, school boards use chalk and are not smart …
h264.mp4 is actually the most common 'standard' (4000 video 'standards' aaaaand counting)
mp4 is indeed universal (Mac, Windows, Linux), and since YouTube, the h264 codec has a good installed base .....
you can bump into probs only when it comes to sheer amount of data:
for instance cheap 'digital frames' are sortof over-whelmed, if you try to playback 720/30p in high quality.
I'm not familiar with 21st cent devices as SmartBoards ... again, it could happen, you have to reduce resolution/fps/bit-rate to avoid clutter&stutter in the video.
I'm using such encoded files successfully on Playstation3, WD HD TV or flatscreenTVs with integrated usb-connection (via stick), etc
    imho, it should work welll .............. < fingers-crossed >

  • Encoding iMovie files for Windows Media Player

    iMovie 11 / 9.0
    Mac OS 10.6.8
I edit audio/video in iMovie (currently the only program I have) and need to output for streaming on the internet. Most of our subscribers are using older versions of Windows Media Player and as I understand won't be able to play MP4. I couldn't play the MP4 using Windows Media Player 9.0, "invalid format" error.
What software could I use to convert MP4 to a format for streaming on the internet that our subscribers play using WMP? Should I save the file out of iMovie in a different format to convert?
I have Adobe Media Encoder 4.2.0.006 but my options are h.264 or flash, got error messages when I tried to "Edit Export Settings".
    Thanks

The easiest way is to upload video to YouTube and embed videos on your site from there. This way you don't have to worry about which version of Windows, which version of Internet Exlorere, etc.
Another way, ask your users to install QuickTime For Windows. Then export normally,
Another way, get one of the paid versions of Flip4Mac, and you can convert files to wmv using QuickTime Pro or MPEG Streamclip or Compressor.

  • Trouble playing .mov files in windows

I used iMovie 08 on a Mac to import some videos from a Sony AVCHD camera. It created a .mov file for each clip (veery heavy ones, though short). They can be seen perfectly on a Mac, but in my PC Quicktime tells me i need to download some codec, and I dont know which one. I have lots of codecs though. What do i need to play the files in Windows?
    Thanks

it never gave me any options. when importing the video from the camera i cant choose which codec to use. anyway, i no longer have access to the mac i used. Im stuck with the files in my pc and cant read them.

I have a similar problem, which is that I want a Windows user to be able to view my iMovie file using Windows Media Player. I have Flip4Mac on my Mac but isn't that for converting the other way around - for viewing a Windows Media Player file on a Mac?
Sorry, I see that there is a Studio version that allows conversion to wmv - I only had the free basic version for Flip4Mac - should have looked more closely at the website!

  • Mac Pro Dual Quad Core won't boot OS/X, but plays fine with Linux/Windows

I've got a Mac Pro Dual Quad Core won't boot OS/X, but plays fine with Linux/Windows. I've tried all of the following initial tests as suggested on forums:
    -Ram swaps
-Alternating video card in PCIe slots
    -Trying alternate video card
    -resetting pram and smc
-Multiple tests with memtest86+ over 26hrs and no failed ram
-Multiple tests (8-12 cycles) with apple HW diagnostics and no problems
-Firmware is approved firmware for early 2008 model...no new updates.
Gentoo livecd works fine and I even installed to hard drive and it boots fine with it. In addition to above tests I also ran a linux stress test putting all 8 cores at a load of 22 for 2.5hrs with no problems.
Memtest86+ for 24hrs+ yields no problems.
    Where problems occur:
Booting off hard drive, DVD or firewire yields an immediate curtain of death and booting off a new snow leopard DVD dies about 25% into the install.
Looking at error log and a quick dmesg shows "Package 0 didn't get an HPET" and complains about AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext. Google turns up illegal uses of this, so doesn't apply to my use case.
I'm a bit stumped since all was working well until one day it was non-stop curtains of death and can't get them to go away.
A logic board replacement at $1100 is not a feasible option for something that works on linux and windows, but not OS/X, is a bit disappointing and somewhat surprising.
Thanks for your help and advice.
    Regards,
    Marcos

Someone here once thought they knew EFI and Open Firmware a little, and used some commands from OF library that an Intel EFI Apple system didn't like. New logicboard.
Of course to run or boot OS X and see video you need EFI based card. The presence of some PC cards can block OS X from booting.
The fact you get part way through SL DVD, pull all the drives, put in a new drive and format it from SL DVD.
Most of the things you tried are what are more common with PC hardware. Including where people have tried and failed to install OS X on unsupported hardware.
I suppose it is possible something tried and failed to modify the Mac's firmware.
If you have Windows running, and you have WD drives, WD just posted new Lifeguard utility which is what I use to do a good job of stripping a drive down and recertify it for reuse, works wonders. Maybe same for other makes with vendor utility.

  • Nothing plays in the Program window.

    Hello,
I'm a new user to Premiere Pro and I recently downloaded it and started working on it. I'm using Mac OSX 10.8.5
I was working on a project that someone had given to me, I opened it and everything was working fine and then inexplicably nothing would play in the program window. When I scrub the playhead I can hear the audio and the sequence progresses in the Program window, but when I press play it does absolutely nothing, it doesn't even play a single frame. All clips still play just fine in the source window.
While I am admittedly a novice on Premiere Pro this strikes me as a very peculiar problem as it seemed to happen out of nowhere, one moment it was working, the next it wasn't.
I've tried restarting, saving the project in a different location, logging in with a different user and always with the same result, the sequence just won't play.
    Can anyone suggest a solution?
    Thanks.

    Hi Arjun,
When I right click on a clip and and create a new sequence it works fine.
So I tried creating a new sequence, and then copied and pasted everything from the sequence that wasn't playing into the new one and it plays now though playback is not very smooth, other than that it's working fine.
Jude - it was the entire sequence that wouldn't play, not just one video track.
    Thanks for your help.

  • QuickTime .mov plays upside-down in Windows Media Player

I know the cause of this: If you record using an iPhone with the volume buttons pointed at the ceiling, the resulting video plays upside-down in Windows Media Player. QuickTime is smart enough to correct and rotate automatically. Not so WMP. I have several clips that were recorded with the volume buttons pointed up. If I use QuickTime Player to rotate the clips, then they are correct when viewed in WMP, but upside-down in QuickTime Player!
Is there any way to fix these clips so they are right-side up in both worlds? Or is there no choice but to re-record everything with iPhone's volume buttons pointed at the floor?

Your assumptions are only partially correct. When you record the clip on your iPhone, the clip is recorded just as you see it in the WMP—i.e., upside down. What the iPhone does is records an addition file value that tells Apple media players which edge to display as the "top" during playback. Since third-party media players ignore this value, they display the clip in its original orientation which, in your case is upside down. When you flip the video orientation using QT 7 Pro, you're telling QT media players to play the file with an "upside down" orientation. By exporting the "flipped" orientation, you are, in fact, re-encoding the original "upside down" to a "right-side up" display but simultaneously telling all Apple media players to play the file upside down.
Is there any way to fix these clips so they are right-side up in both worlds? Or is there no choice but to re-record everything with iPhone's volume buttons pointed at the floor?
Actually, you can do either. That is, you can either "fix" the original recordings or re-record the the clips in a manner that avoids this problem. To "fix" your original files, simple open the files in an Apple media player (like QT 7 Pro) and export the files. The player will note the current "top" orientation and re-encode the content using the current display orientation for both QT and third-party players.

  • How to play MOV files inside Windows Media Center Edition

I've installed QT Pro, but am not able to play MOV files inside Windows Media Center Edition (MCE). Under "My Videos" from the MCE main interface, I can see the files, but once selected, error message indicates unknown/unplayable file type.
How do I get my MOV files to play inside Windows MCE??

I don't use MSI's MC application so I can't directly answer your question.
However both Win DVD 6 and PowerDVD6 play them just fine by launching the ts.ifo file.
Yes, I know that, but that means that I should use at least two applications. I need only one front end to launch all my media files, inluding ripped DVD files, not as separate VOBs but as whole movies decribed in IFO files.

  • Why won't Quicktime 7.4.1 play .wmv files when Windows Media Player will?

I am running OS 10.4.11 on a Power Mac G4 Quicksilver 2002. When I try to play .wmv files, the following message appears: "The movie could not be opened. The file is not a movie file." However, I can play such files using Windows Media Player. I have installed Quicktime 7.4.1. That hasn't helped.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I already had Flip4Mac installed. However, I re-installed it, but I get the same disappointing message when I try to open .wmv files from Flip4Mac's "Quicktime Player." Perian doesn't work either. At http://lifehacker.com/software/quicktime/download-of-the-day-perian-mac-204423.p hp I read the following: Perian is a freeware plug-in designed to enable the playback of almost every popular video codec in Quicktime.
In fact, pretty much the only major codec not supported by Perian is Windows Media Video files (WMV), but previously-mentioned Flip4Mac should take care of your WMV needs.
I'd appreciate additional comments and suggestions.
