Playing iTunes library on Time Machine, iMac to MacBook Air?

I recently backed up my desktop iMac with a Lacie Porsche external hard drive into Time Machine. I'm hoping to be able to use the external hard drive to play my iMac's iTunes library on my MacBook Air, as there isn't nearly enough memory on the MacBook to transfer all my audio files to it. It seems like I can play one audio file at a time by going into the external hard drive, but is it possible to access the entire iTunes library directly from the external hard drive?

Your iTunes Library is typically in…
Your home directory > Music > iTunes
… and if you restore that entire folder it will revert your iTunes Library in total to the state it was as of the date and time you select in Time Machine.

How can I migrate iTunes from time machine to new macbook air?

My old macbook died completely and will now not start up, so I cannot reauthorise it. I have everything backed up on time machine on an external hard drive (passport for mac). How can I just restore iTunes but nothing else? I cannot find any option to select what is restored. I don't want to put all the junk onto my new mac!

The easiest way to do that is to move the entire iTunes Folder using an external hard drive. Check out the article below for the steps to move your iTunes library to your new MacBook Air.

When I tried to relaunch itunes holding down the option button and select my backed-up itunes folder from time machine
Is this after you restored the iTunes folder from Time Machine? Or were you trying to select the iTunes folder on the Tme Machine drive to use as the iTunes library?
Quit iTunes.
Open Time Machine.
Selct \Music\iTunes\ in Time Machine.
Go back to when you want it restored from.
Click on Restore.
When it asks, select Replace.
After it is finsihed copying, launch iTunes.

I recently had a major crash on my two internal disc DualG5. The system internal disk failed completely and I used Time Machine to do a full system restore to the second internal disc. It worked PERFECTLY!! I followed the instructions in support

This involved inserting the Leopard DVD into the optical drive and backing up from my external LaCie time machine backup.
I also have a MacBook Air. I use an external USB HD drive as Time Machine backup. The Air only has one USB port. I have an external DVD drive for the Air. Clearly, I will not be able to mount the DVD and External disk at the same time unless I use a small hub. I guess this will work but is there any other work around. Could I do a full reinstall and then connect the external HD?

Alternatively, you could use Remote Disc Sharing (via the DualG5) to do the install and reserve the USB port for the Time Machine disk.

How can I restore my iTunes library via Time Machine after an erase/install and upgrade to Snow Leopard?

Actual problem:
I reinstalled all my programs that I need without a hitch. Meanwhile, I've been trying to recover the few files (mostly music) I actually store on my computer's hard drive as opposed to on my external HDs. I use one external HD for my graphic files and the other is strictly for Time Machine backups. I tried to recover my iTunes music, but I got a message that says: "The file: "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes." I restored (I thought) my iTunes library Username/Music/iTunes." Additionally, I was going to upgrade to Mountain Lion, but I have seen that there were issues with Lion and iTunes libraries so I'm a little wary of this.
Excuse the long explanation, but I figure the problem may possibly be in the details of the weeks prior this problem:
I have recently been having issues with my iMac. I brought it in to see a Genius twice within the past month and they couldn't seem to find the problem. (It would restart Finder of it's own accord while I was using Adobe CS programs) I figured it was worth backing everything up via Time Machine and doing a complete erase/install/factory reset. I did so and had a problem again, and brought it in again, third time. The Genius did another diagnostics tests and found nothing and said my erase/install probably did the trick, but time will tell. I am, after the erase/rewrite and upgrade running Mac OS X 10.6.3 and previous to this was still running Tiger.

So, I didn't update iTunes and the rest of it after installing Snow Leopard. My stupidity, I figured that the OS was more up to date than the one I had previously so that all the programs that come with it probably were more current than the ones I was using. However, now that I have updated all my software, I am still getting the same message from iTunes that I was previously. I cannot open iTunes at all, same "The file: "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes." message. I'm confused again. Checked a few other threads and whatnot and cannot seem to figure this out.

I recently pruchased a new imac and woiuld like to move my entire itunes and iphoto library to a new user I set up for the new computer. I used time machine to backup my old computer (a Macbook pro I purchased in 2007), but it just transferred the exact dektop I had on the laptop, and I cannot access any of my files from the new user. So at this point I need to start with transferring the two previously mentioned sets of files to the new user, and then I also need to know how to set my computer to default to the new user when it first boots up instead of it starting up with the time machine backed up user as it does now. My imac has had its hardrive replaced - (unfortunate) - and I am wanting to restore the files fom itunes and Iphoto only. I have tried for many hours following other posts, support, but have so far not had any luck. What is an "Idiots" way to achive this, hort of taking my mac back to apple and get them to do it for me!

Sorry for the long title- I copied my iMac's iTunes library to my Time Machine/Airport. Now, for my new MacBook Pro, I don't want to clobber the disc with that huge library, so I want to point to the TIme Machine directory. THe frustrating thing is, I did, and it worked. Now it doesn't. And I've tried remapping it 10 times etc, and it just doens't pick up that library. When I go into iTUnes preferences, advanced tab, it does show that I am pointing at the correct remote library, but it doesn't load it. The MacBook still has its original library. What changed? Any suggestions? THanks
PS- iTunes 10, and (now that I think of it) this may have occurred hen my wife got her 4S and she accepted all sorts of software updates... or not.

Back to basics.
Time Machine is an application that copies to a second drive (usually external). Apple sells drives called Time Capsule but basically any external drive should work. From what you said I gather you have set up TM to copy to your external drive but you have also placed your entire iTunes library on that external drive and deleted it from your internal drive in order to free up space. Ergo, you only have one copy of your iTunes library now and that's on the external. I don't know about TM failing after 18 months since it is software. Maybe Time Capsule since it is hardware, but the timeframe isn't a given. My external could "fail" tonight if somebody broke into my house and stole all my computer stuff. You're never safe with only one copy of your files, and it sounds like you only have one copy of your iTunes collection.
You say "remapping" which isn't a technical term for iTunes. Do you mean you changed something in iTunes preferences, or have you held down the option key while starting iTunes so it knows to look for your library files on the external drive?
Do you have iTunes manage your music?
How did you plcae your collection on the external drive? Do you have the whole iTunes folder there along with media files, library files, artwork folder, etc?, or did you use the "move your media to a different location" method which only moves media and basically splites up your iTunes folder across several drives?

Cannot move iTunes library from Time Machine Backup onto new Macbook

I'm trying to move my iTunes library off my iMac onto my MacBook. I thought I could grab it from my Time Capsule but when I open the Time capsule it shows as a sparse bundle which I cannot do anything with.
Is this the best way to do it? I would imagine it would take forever over wifi...
Can I transfer using Migration Assistant and an ethernet cable? Does migration Assistant ask me to use an ethernet cable as an option?

How to access iTunes library in time machine after changing corrupt HD_

have a mini with 2.66GHz Intel Core Duo where several months after installing Mavericks it seemed not to be able to handle it anz longer. Whatever the szmptoms and mz attempts to save the thing, I brought it to the Service Center which finally said the hard drive needed changing.They copied the content onto a new 750GB one, but then found that thez couldnt move the itunes folder. They said I should just retrieve it from my time capsule.
Back home, time machine says it doesnt have a location set up for time machine, kind of telling me that my mini is not being recognised as my old computer.
There s threads and sites that tell you how to avoid a full new backup after hd change when you ve managed to copy the data directly. I couldnt find anything about retrieving specific data from the time machine that were not successfully migrated when changing the hd.
Any pointers, please?

no I have not. I was kind of afraid that if I set up time machine, it'll create a new "account" and won't let me access the old backups in time machine. While user name hasn't changed, nor password, it seems that the service center has not copied my "preferences" or "profile" for the lack of a better word. It looks to me that time machine doesn't recognise the mini being the old one.
i just linked up itunes again and at least through itunes match I can see my library in icloud. But I don't want to download 130GB from icloud if I have them on my time capsule 10 feet away from the mini...
