Playing .m4v files outside iTunes

My iTunes library HD is just about full so I have a ton of .m4v videos on another HD. Whenever i go to play these by double clicking iTunes launches and the file is copied into the iTunes Library. Before i re-installed OS 10.6.6 becuase of a disk crash this never happend. What am I missing to stop from having these files copied to iTunes. Quicktime used to play these when I double clicked on them.
thanks,
Joe

John Guo's method for not adding files.
Right click or option+click to get "open with" options for files. To make an application type the default, highlight a file, Finder > Get Info >Open with + click "open all of this type" They will still be usable by iTunes but double clicking will open them with the other application.

  • Playing FLAC files in iTunes with Windows 7 OS.....is it possible?

Are there any apps or hacks that anyone is aware of that will allow me to play FLAC files in iTunes?
I do not want to convert my FLAC files to another format to use - it would be too difficult to synchronise the tags and song ratings from the mp3 files (or whatever formats itunes supports) back to my ''archived' FLAC files.
Yet I really enjoy iTunes' playlist functions - no other players compare. I am hoping to have the best of both worlds: FLAC and iTunes cataloguing features. A search through the web and these forums makes me think it is not possible.
Any links or suggestions? Or do I need to choose between FLAC and ITunes for realsies?

Firstly, playing Flac in iTunes is an altogether different animal than playing them on your iOS device and is something you never asked about. For that you'll need to Google "Fluke FLAC" if you're still running Lion or older. If you're running a newer Mac OS I haven't yet heard of a solution for playing FLAC in iTunes and you'll have to resort to a third party app like Vox.
For most FLAC playing iOS apps you'll add your music files via the "file sharing" section at the bottom of your Apps tab in iTunes when your iPod touch is plugged in.
As for Flac Player specifically the high price coupled with some reported problems I heard when looking into it had me steering clear so I can't offer first hand reports on THAT program.
Since it sounds like you've been longing to play FLAC on your iPod touch for quite some time I was simply offering a bevvy of options to do just that I know of, including some free ones.
Hopefully someone will stumble across this thread and chime in with feedback about THAT app specifically for you.

I can play audio files in iTunes but I can't play downloaded tv shows or movies.  Everytime I try to play them, iTunes stops working and closes.  Any information will help.

Is QuickTime installed? If not it might help to install it.
If so is Direct3D Video Acceleration enabled? If so it might help to disable.

  • How do I get Adobe Flash to play M4V files?

I have just downloaded and installed version 9.0.115.0 and I
can't find it (the program file) in order to "associate" M4V files
with it. Okay, I thought that it may perhaps have embedded itself
in Firefox so I tried to play a M4V file (which is on my hard disc)
using Firefox but to no avail.
I'm sure there is an embarrassingly simple solution!

    JohnSkliros,
    >I have just downloaded and installed version 9.0.115.0

It sounds like you upgraded Flash Player, isn't an
    exectuable file you
can easily find. It's a plugin or ActiveX control, which
    means it's
intended to be run inside (to be run by) your browser. In a
    sense, your
browser is that executable, and Flash Player is a tool the
    browser uses to
    display things.
    > I tried to play a M4V file (which is on my hard disc)
    using
    > Firefox but to no avail.
Yeah, that makes sense, actually. The updated Flash Player
    doesn't play
M4V files directly. Instead, it allows Flash programmers to
    display M4V
files by way of something called the FLVPlayback component,
    or by a
combination of the Video, NetConnection, and NetStream
    classes. As a media
player, the Flash plugin still only plays SWF files (normal
    Flash content).
That Flash content might, in turn, display JPGs, GIFs, PNGs,
    vector art,
fonts, and now a wider variety of video files, but you can't
    just drag these
files into Flash Player and see them.

  • How can I play mkv files in iTunes?

    Hi All,
How can I play mkv files in iTunes?
What're the limitations of iTunes? I see there are a lot of files that iTunes cant play. Is it true for all?

  • Just upgraded an iMac with 4GB Memory and Intel Processor from 10.6.8 to Mavericks and Quicktime plays m4v files with stuttering audio

I just upgraded an iMac with 4GB Memory and 3.33 Ghz  Intel Core Duo Processor from 10.6.8 to Mavericks.  I now have Quicktime 10.3 which plays m4v files with stuttering audio.  This is a nightmare as I use Quicktime a lot in my research.  I have seen similar threads but so far only reporting the problem.  For now I have installed Quicktime Player 10.7 (which appears in utilities, leaving Quicktime 10.3 in the main applications list) which plays the same videos with no problem, but it would be good to know if anyone has managed to find a workaround at all, or know if Apple have plans to do anything about it?

Slow performance after installing Yosemite on an older Mac is often caused by inadequate memory. Although you can install the upgrade on a Mac with 2 GB of memory, experience has shown that at least 4 GB is needed for full performance.
Select About This Mac from the Apple menu. If you have less than 4 GB of memory, and your model has upgradable memory, install as much as it can take, or at least that much. Any reputable RAM vendor will have a web form in which you can select the Mac model and be directed to compatible parts.

  • Since updating iTunes and Mavericks, every time I import m4v files into iTunes it renames all the files to "Avidemux". what's gone wrong?

Since updating iTunes and Mavericks, every time I import m4v files into iTunes it re-names all the files to "Avidemux". what's gone wrong?

(By the way, would I need to use also the red and white phono cables also to get sound?)
Yes, S-video cables do not carry sound.
When you import 16:9 into DV Widescreen, make sure that you have UNchecked 'automatic letterboxing'.
In Preferences, is the project set to the correct standard?
    29.95 fps = NTSC
    25 fps = PAL.
BTW, this is actually the iMovie 5 forum, but no matter!

  • ITunes 12 not playing m4v files

Since updating to iTunes 12 none of my .m4v movies will play in iTunes. Movies that are .mp4 files play fine.
Anyone find a solution to this issue.

I am having the exact same issue after I upgraded my early 2013 15" Macbook Pro Retina to Yosemite. I am unable to play any of my iTunes purchased movies either from iCloud or locally from my computer. I receive the HDCP error. I have no external monitor connected nor am I using AirPlay or anything of that nature. I even tried manually switching graphics cards and can't get any of them to play.
I have a hunch that it has something to do with the Yosemite upgrade. Before I upgraded my OS, I did download and use iTunes 12 on Mavericks and had no issues playing my content. However right after the upgrade, I received the errors.

  • No audio when playing m4v file

I have a new laptop (HP Pavilion), downloaded the latest iTunes and QuickTime, and music files play fine. Trouble is that the TV shows I've purchased via iTunes have no audio. The video works great, but zero sound. I've uninstalled an re-installed iTunes, rebooted, etc. I'm running XP Pro. Sound card is fine as Windows Media Player plays ok.
I saw a post about this from last summer, but no resolution. Anyone have any ideas?
    thanks

I'm having a similar issue. When I play an m4v file, my computer freezes to the point I have to do a hard reboot. Yet if I go into services and stop the Windows Audio service, the m4v video plays fine without sound. All my other audio files play fine. It's very frustrating because I can't go to an earlier version to troubleshoot since my libraries are 7.2. If anyone knows of a fix, please let me know.

  • Quicktime plugin in Safari won't play m4v files

    Hi there,
Since the iTunes 9.0.3 update, html documents with embedded .m4v files will not play through the QT plugin. i.e. All I see is the QT logo with a question mark. Linking to the file directly, causes it to download and open up in iTunes by default. It will play in QT.
Here's a web page showing this behaviour: http://www.frettedamericana.com/
This is occurring on my MBPro (Snow Leopard) and iMac (Leopard).
How do I restore the QT plugin to opening the file by default in Safari?
I apologize for not knowing which forum to post this: QT, iTunes, or Safari...
    Cheers,
    Warren

Fretted Americana just posted another video on their homepage. Embedded URL for video is http://frettedamericana.com/images/guitars/00950/00950_00950 Phil Gibson SG Special.m4v
No period in the middle of the filename, same problem however...

  • I can't seem to ADD or even PLAY big files in iTunes

Well this forum is my last resource, really. I've tried everything, even called Apple Technical Support twice, with no solution.
The thing is I wanted to add an audio file, mp3, to itunes library. I noticed it wouldn't be added in any way (dragging or from the menu). I couldn't find out what was the problem but then I saw that another file, same size (65 MB), hadn't been added too. All the other files, which are much smaller, work fine. So I think the problem is the size of the mp3.
Anyway, I tried everything I could think about, and also reinstalling itunes (which was suggested by the tech support). I checked the files and they're OK, they play regularly on WMP, winamp, VLC. Then i found out that don't even play on itunes. In fact, it doesn't recognize them: the SOLE rection it manifests is coming to the top when I try to open the files straight from the explorer. And that's all, no error msg, nthng, it just stays there, not even opening the player or addind to a playlist if I will.
That's basically it... i really tried to circumvent this issue on my own, i tried hard and called support. When they couldn't help i gave up. I always think I'm doing smthng stupid and that the solution is obvious, right in frint of me, but I really can't see it. If you could help me, even telling me if you are also unable to deal with "huge" files in itunes, I'd be grateful...
    Any suggestions? Thanks!
ps: i got windows XP pro SP 2, i have free disk space and my ipod is a shuffle 1 G (its not lack of space on it, i cant even manage to get to the stage of filling it)

Just out of curiosity, try playing the song in a different program . . . maybe Windows Media Player to see if it works. I wonder if it's corrupted....

  • I have many videos (m4v files) in iTunes library.  Are these now compatible with iCloud so that I can view them on iPad?

I have purchased over 100 concert DVDs over the years and have added them to my iTunes library as m4v files.  Are they now able to be loaded to iCloud so that they are accessible on my iPad without having to be on the same network as my Mac?

iCloud does not store or sync video that was not purchased in itunes.  Look into Dropbox for storing video there and syncing to an ipad.  Otherwise use the wired connection to the itunes computer to sync video (not wirelessly).

  • Can't play bounced file in iTunes

I've googled this issue and haven't been able to find a straight answer or solution. I can't play my bounced Logic Pro music file in iTunes. I bounced it as a .wav and also as .aiff...but to no avail. I'm able to play the file in my VLC player, but can't play it in iTunes. That, coupled with all the other bugs in Logic Pro, is extremely frustrating.
Is it culprit Logic, or iTunes? From what I understand iTunes still supports .wav & .aiff files so I shouldn't have an issue. Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

Did you bounce at 44.1kHz, 16 bit? AIFF or AAC or MP3 should be fine for iTunes, but sample rate and bit depth is important.

  • Playing avi files in iTunes

I would like to be able to use iTunes and my iPod touch to play .avi files saved saved to my pc from a canon digital camera. There is an option to open the video file using itunes but when I select that option, iTunes simply opens and nothing else happens. Similarly when I sync photos to my iPod touch, the video files are ignored despite my selecting the "include videos" option. Any ideas?

itunes and ipods won't play avi files. Use handbrake or something similar to convert them to a supported format.
