I know most Sony products like digital camcorders have Firewire. they call it iLink.
you could connect your iLink port to your Mac via a 4pin to 6pin firewire cable and transfer the video info.
I dont think those smaller DVD discs are gonna work in your Mac. my understanding they are a proprietary format made for regular standalone DVD players. etc.

Mini DVDs don't work with the Apple USB SuperDrive or with any disc drive included with Macs. You have to use an external DVD drive compatible with mini DVDs

  • DVD Player to play mini-DVDs?

    Hi,
Please suggest (make and model) an external DVD player
which will play Sony Handycam mini-DVDs (3 inch diameter)
and connect easily to a MacBook Pro.  Thanks!

Yes, I meant an external DVD drive.  I've heard certain
makes/models have trouble with a MacBook.  Does

  • Can't play mini dvd - and now I can't eject

I had a training video made at a class yesterday, and the instructor used a Sony mini-dvd camera for media.  I can't read it on my work Dell laptop, and I placed the DVD in my mid-2009 17" MBP.  Won't play, and I can not eject it either.  Other than splitting the case is there a way to eject the disk?

Regardless of the brand of computer, non-standard optical discs are totally incompatible with slot-loading optical drives. That instructor should have known.
Even if you open the case, the disk is still stuck in the drive because the drive irself is a full wrap-around design:
You can try holding the computer so the drive slot is pointed down and rocking it (not "shaking it!"). the computer should be OFF, not asleep when doing this. If that does not work, seek professional help.
Others may tell you to stick something thin and flat well into the slot to free the mini-disk, but I believe you can imagine how bad that could turn if not properly done.

  • Playing mini dvds on Macbook

I have a sony dvd camcorder which records onto mini dvds and I wish to find a way to play them in my 13" macbook. Can I just buy an external tray loading dvd drive? Will this work ok with the format that the camcorder records in? I have tried to contact Sony about this and they reckon it's not possible!

Can I just buy an external tray loading dvd drive?
    Yes.
Will this work ok with the format that the camcorder records in?
Depends. I've heard reports of people not being able to play Sony recorded discs in anything but Sony DVD players because they use their own formats. If you can find somebody with a different brand DVD player, you can test it. You may need to import the video to the computer, hopefully through FireWire, otherwise through USB.

  • Mini dvd-cd

Is there an adapter that one can buy to use the mini dvd-cd for Imac? I have a sony video camera and it uses mini dvds. I am thinking of buying an Imac and this this the only lack of feature of not being able to use /play mini dvd/cd that is weighing against the decision to buy.
    appreciate any input.
    thanks

You will need an external FireWire DVD drive to read those discs.

  • Getting mini dvd to play

hello all, i searched the past topics and didn't find anything that answered my question, so i thought i would bring it here.
i am trying to capture some footage that was shot on a camer that shoots straight to mini DVD instead of DV. i am using a power book and can't put the disk directly into my drive, so i bought an external DVD drive with a spot for the smaller disk. i have a program that will allow me to extract the footage from the disc but for some reason the smaller disk will not read in the drive. it will not even play back, i have put the disk into my friend's desktop and it read fine so i know it is possible. the people i am doing the project for unfortunately do not have the camera that shot the footage anymore, so this is pretty much my only shot. any help would be amazing.

Have your friend copy the files off of the MiniDVD and give them to you on a full sized DVD. They are just mpeg2 files anyway. Once you have the full sized DVD, use mpeg streamclip to convert them to an editing format - such as DV-NTSC.
    Good luck.

  • Importing from Sony mini DVD?

Brand new iMac and I cant insert the mini DVD from Sony Handycam camcorder since iMac only takes standard size dvd. It appears as if there is no other plug-in option, eg, firewire or usb port. Any suggestions? The Sony model is dcr-dvd 305 ... should I burn files from small dvd to large one? Will I lose quality? Bought this computer for ease of use and already frustrated...thanks!

If your camera is several years old, it is most certainly Mpeg2. If your DVD will play in a DVD player, it is almost certainly MPEG2. The alternatives are AVCHD which is a fairly recent format for high definition cameras, and dv which is uncompressed, and probably not used on your dvd. If you can open your dvd in the finder, you may be able to right-click, get info, and find out for sure.
If you are interested in a new camera, there are a lot of choices. The simplest choice is a standard definition miniDV tape camera that connects with firewire. If you go HD, there are mpeg2 cameras and AVCHD cameras in tape, DVD, flash memory, and hard drive formats.
Personally, I like the flash memory AVCHD, but others like the easy archival capability of tape.
See this Apple document for compatible camcorders.

  • Importing movies from a mini DVD made from Sony handycam DCR-DVD105

I have a Sony Handycam DCR-DVD105. It records on to mini DVDs. I can play them with no problem into my DVD player, but when I put them into my external drive my computer recognizes it as a dvd but imovie dose not recognize it as a readable file. Do I need to convert this file to a different format? If so , with what program?

  • Trouble Getting Files From mini-DVD (Handycam)

I don't know the first thing about those little camcorders that record to mini-DVD, but I'm working on a movie for a girl's dance team, and while most of what they gave me to work with was miniDV on an external HD, they did give me a mini-DVD with just under four minutes of footage on it to use also. Fortunately that disc isn't very important to them, and I don't really have to use it.
Anyway, I can't play the disc in my set-top DVD player; it says there's no disc. My computer's DVD player will play it fine using PowerDVD Player. I tried to rip the disc using DVD-Shrink and it acts like there's no disc in the tray too. Then I managed to rip it to the desktop as an ISO image with DVD-Decrypter with no problems. After that I tried to open the ISO image with DVD Shrink and it says: "Invalid UDF File System".
So, anyone have any idea how I can get the VOB files from this ISO image?

Well I think I kind of did that Bill. That is, I managed to rip the DVD to the desktop via DVD Encrypter and then burned the new ISO file to a new DVD. It still wouldn't open with anything I have that converts ISO to VOB files.
I looked at Sony's website about Handycams and it says this:
"After finalizing the disc in the camcorder, the disc can play back in most DVD Players".
The disc they gave me is a DVD-RW. Maybe the disc hasn't been finalized?
    But Sony also says:
"With DVD+RW media there is no need to finalize the disc (minimum recording required); simply remove the finalized disc and insert the media into a compatible DVD or Blu-ray Disc Player."
But the disc they gave me is DVD-RW rather than DVD+RW. At any rate I'm wondering now if maybe they should have finalized the disc before giving it to me and forgot to do it. The disc only has about 4-minutes of footage on it, so I'm guessing maybe they didn't finalize it because they thought they would add more later. I'll have to track down the owner and see what they have to say.
    Thanks

  • Burn dvd's from mac won't play on DVD player

I'm getting an error 'can't read disk' from my samsung bd-p2550 when trying to play a moving i created on my Mac Mini. I've created the movie using iPhoto to create a slide show movie. i renamed the resulting file from M4V to MP4 and burned to a DVD-R disk. inserted into the samsung dvd player and got the error message, even though the samsung is supposed to support mp4.
next i downloaded FLV Crunch and converted the MP4 to VOB(mpeg 2) format. burnt to another disk, same error.
i did some google searching and they talk about VIDEO_TS directories (which i see on my store bought movie dvd's). is there some directory structre that makes movies playable on a DVD player connected to a TV?
i can play the dvd's on my Mac Mini from the internal DVD drive, so that seems to indicate the file structure is ok.
    Any other thoughts?
    thanks!

Why use mp4 if it to be played on a DVD Player?
Save the project as a DV mov file and burn the DVD again in the usual DVD format of mpeg2.

  • Can't import some Sony mini dvds

I have a Sony Handycam DVD403 and am importing with iMovie '09
I've successfully imported 15 mini dvds but have 7 which do not get recognized.
For the ones that work, I turn the handycam to play, the handycam screen says 'USB MODE', the Mac gives me a dialogue box that say 'you have connected a mini-DVD device to your computer.  Chose an action from the popup menu or click Ignore' .  I just click ignore and a few seconds later, the Device list of the mac shows a new entry, another dialogue box displays at the top of iMovie that says 'Looking for cameras and devices' with a blue/white moving bar under it and the words 'Sony Storage Device' under the bar.  After a couple of minutes, it says 'Generating poster images' and then shows me the clips and I select which ones to import (oddly enough, it lists everyone twice, so I must deselect 1/2 of them, but at least I can import them)
For the ones that don't work, I get the 'you have connected a mini-dvd device...' but the mac never shows me anything new in the list of devices and nothing more happens.
If I unplug the USB cable, I can see the videos on the handycam, so something is on the mini DVDs
I have tried turning off the handycam, rebooting the mac, unplugging the usb cable, using another usb cable...all in various sequences with no luck.
Because the handycam device is not listed as a device, I can't use the import facility from the File Menu
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.  I was so encouraged that some worked and hope someone has tips to get the last 7 working
    thank you!

nevermind...kept reading on this support forum and tried finalizing one of the mini DVDs and it WORKS now!
