Playing mini dvds on Macbook

I have a sony dvd camcorder which records onto mini dvds and I wish to find a way to play them in my 13" macbook. Can I just buy an external tray loading dvd drive? Will this work ok with the format that the camcorder records in? I have tried to contact Sony about this and they reckon it's not possible!

Can I just buy an external tray loading dvd drive?
Yes.
Will this work ok with the format that the camcorder records in?
Depends. I've heard reports of people not being able to play Sony recorded discs in anything but Sony DVD players because they use their own formats. If you can find somebody with a different brand DVD player, you can test it. You may need to import the video to the computer, hopefully through FireWire, otherwise through USB.

  • Mini-DVD and MacBook Air

I have a MacBook Air and purchased the Super Drive for MacBook Air.  I have all these family movies on DVD Mini's.  Is there anyway to play them and get them into IMovie?  Is there an adapter that will work in the slot?  Is there such a thing as an external drive for these little discs?  Any help will be really appreciated!

No. There is no adapter to get mini-DVDs safely into a MBA.
If you do a Google search you will find that there are lots of external drive that can be used with mini-DVDs.

  • DVD Player to play mini-DVDs?

    Hi,
Please suggest (make and model) an external DVD player
which will play Sony Handycam mini-DVDs (3 inch diameter)
and connect easily to a MacBook Pro.  Thanks!

Yes, I meant an external DVD drive.  I've heard certain
makes/models have trouble with a MacBook.  Does
Other World Computer (the name of the store your

    Thanks!

  • How can I play mini DVD's on the USB superdrive?

I can't play my mini dvd's on the superdrive

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Mini DVDs don't work with the Apple USB SuperDrive or with any disc drive included with Macs. You have to use an external DVD drive compatible with mini DVDs

  • Cannot Play Interactive DVD on MacBook

Am completely new to MAC, so please forgive me if this is a completely stupid question:
For some reason I cannot get my MacBook to play an interactive tutorial DVD. It plays all other DVD's I own without any problems, but for this one it gives "+supported disk not found+" message. I am sure nothing is wrong with the DVD, as it plays normally on my PC and my TV's DVD player. Spent the whole day trying to figure out what's wrong but still cannot.
Should I just download RealOne Player for MAC and try to play it there? Or is there any kind of codec I need to install?
Please help, as this is driving me nuts and I really need to be able to play this DVD on my MAC in front of my staff tomorrow!

Apple Support told me that most likely that DVD was formatted specifically for Windows, therefore it would not be played on MAC.

  • Can't play mini dvd - and now I can't eject

I had a training video made at a class yesterday, and the instructor used a Sony mini-dvd camera for media.  I can't read it on my work Dell laptop, and I placed the DVD in my mid-2009 17" MBP.  Won't play, and I can not eject it either.  Other than splitting the case is there a way to eject the disk?

Regardless of the brand of computer, non-standard optical discs are totally incompatible with slot-loading optical drives. That instructor should have known.
Even if you open the case, the disk is still stuck in the drive because the drive irself is a full wrap-around design:
You can try holding the computer so the drive slot is pointed down and rocking it (not "shaking it!"). the computer should be OFF, not asleep when doing this. If that does not work, seek professional help.
Others may tell you to stick something thin and flat well into the slot to free the mini-disk, but I believe you can imagine how bad that could turn if not properly done.

  • Playing mini dvd's

bought a new sony digital camcorder that uses a dvd that is 8cm (smaller than normal) will not load or play on my new G4 note book. Purchased Apple 12/2005.

I know most Sony products like digital camcorders have Firewire. they call it iLink.
you could connect your iLink port to your Mac via a 4pin to 6pin firewire cable and transfer the video info.
I dont think those smaller DVD discs are gonna work in your Mac. my understanding they are a proprietary format made for regular standalone DVD players. etc.

  • Mini dvd-cd

Is there an adapter that one can buy to use the mini dvd-cd for Imac? I have a sony video camera and it uses mini dvds. I am thinking of buying an Imac and this this the only lack of feature of not being able to use /play mini dvd/cd that is weighing against the decision to buy.
    appreciate any input.
    thanks

You will need an external FireWire DVD drive to read those discs.

  • How can I play music on my macbook pro (OSX Lion) through a Pioneer receiver. I've connected them with a mini display port to HDMI cable with audio support bought at the Apple Store, but there's no sound coming through. thanks

How can I play music on my macbook pro (OSX Lion) through a Pioneer receiver? I've connected them with a mini display port to HDMI cable with audio support bought at the Apple Store, but there's no sound coming through. There are 4 HDMI-in ports on the receiver - BD, DVD, DVR/BDR and audio. In my system preferences for sound, the receiver doesn't show up as an output option. Can anyone please advise. (ps, this is my first time posting a question, so I hope I can find your answers!) thanks, JP downunder

For sound, try the audio output port and connecting to the RCA  audio input ports on your Pioneer receiver.  Use something like this:

  • I can't play a DVD from my superdrive via my macbook pro to apple TV via airplay.

I can't play a DVD from my superdrive via my macbook pro to apple TV via airplay.  The movie plays fine on the macbook if I'm not trying to airplay.  The airplay works fine if I'm not trying to play a movie from the superdrive.  I think my apple TV is Gen 2.

If you get a checkerboard pattern it's because Apple block Airplay Mirroring of protected media.
    VLC Player may work.

I have spent the past hour trying to figure out why my MacBook Pro, OS X 10.6.8, to play a DVD I have inserted into the drive.
I have restarted the computer and verified that there is a DVD drive installed.
I have been been able to play DVDs for a while, then suddenly it stopped.

  • MacBook will not play burnt DVDs?

Hi, not sure if anyone posted this topic already so sorry in advance, but i wanted to know why won't my macbook play burnt DVDs. The DVDs worked fine on my dvd player, my other PC etc. When i load the burnt DVD into my macbook it wouldnt recognize the disk and when i open the dvd platey and hit play it would say something like please enter a readable disk. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.
Black MacBook 2.0GHZ 1GB RAM 80GB HD; 5TH GEN Black iPod Video   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I have the same problem with my MacBook 2.0 GHz.
The DVDs in question are DVD-RWs burnt with Pioneer DVR-520H, they work fine on my iMac G4 (DVD-Player & VLC) but when I insert the DVD in my MacBook the DVD-Player doesn't recognize the "media type" and VLC player gives me an error log like this :
vcd: search for kIOCDMediaClass came up empty
vcd: failed to get the TOC
    vcd: no movie tracks found
access_file: file /dev/rdisk1 is empty, aborting
cdda: search for kIOCDMediaClass came up empty
cdda: failed to get the TOC
    cdda: no audio tracks found
main: no suitable access module for `dvdnav:///dev/rdisk1'
macosx: Error: Unable to open 'dvdnav:///dev/rdisk1'
The interesting thing is that the DVD shows fine on my MacBook's desktop, I can open it and when I copy the VIDEO_TS -folder on my hard disk I can play it with no problems with either DVD-player or VLC.
So my MacBook can read the disc, it just can't play it - what could be causing this problem?
I have been suggested trying DVD-Rs instead of DVD-RWs, but I don't think this solves the problem, I wanna be able to play RWs too if they work fine on my iMac G4.
The DVDs have also been tested on PowerBook G4 (works fine) and Intel iMac (the same problem as with my MacBook = doesn't work). The DVDs aren't copied, they have material recorded from TV using the Pioneer DVR-520H (the same machine used for burning the DVDs) on them.
I'm able to play normal, rented or bought DVDs on my MacBook. Both machines are running the latest Tiger OS.
    Thank you in advance.

  • How to import video on a mini DVD-R to MacBook?

I have used Diva before but that does not import that audio...i would like to use something, preferably free, that imports both audio and video.
    thank you

it is a sony handycam that uses the Mini DVDs...it wont just transfer into a Mac, you need some sort of conversion program. That is why i said earlier that i have used Diva, but Diva doesnt transfer audio just the video. Im trying to find a way (hopefully free) to get both audio and video on my MacBook...
