Playing movies using airport

Hi there
I have just bought an airport and want to play a movie (a .avi file) on my MacBook and have the sound coming out of my stereo (using the AirPort). Is this possible? I have tried to play the movie in iTunes but that doesn't seem to work. I have also tried to use Quicktime player, but without any luck as well.
I hope you can help me.
Happy new year=)

After looking around for a solution, I found a piece of software called AirFoil which you can get at http://www.rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/mac/. The problem here is, that when you play a movie there is a time delay of 2-5 seconds.
So the question is: Does Apple Apple offer a solution, how you can play movies on Quicktime or DVD player (using AirPort Express), without the time delay??

  • Playing movies using VLC on external display

My Macbook Pro is connected to my TV through the DVI port. There is a side-by-side arrangement, not mirror displays. Everything is working perfectly, sound and video.
Sometimes I try to use VLC to play a movie on the TV screen, while I do work on my Macbook screen. Many times it will easily work, no problem. But sometimes, when the movie opens up I cannot get it to move into the external screen. But ONLY the VLC movie will have this problem (sometimes iTunes too). All other applications will move into the external screen fine, but the VLC movie will not go past the boundary of my Macbook screen.
I am using VLC as opposed to other applications because some of the movie files can only be recognized by VLC.
Please help! I'm sure there is a Preferences option that can correct this seeing that sometimes it works fine.

I assume you specified the screen in vlc's video preferences and that screen is enabled when you play the video.  I'm guessing it's probably a bug (yet another bug) in vlc 2.x which I also assume you are using.  I long since gave up on vlc 2.x and stuck with vlc 1.1.12 which never has problems selecting my desired screen for full screen display (my TV).
I suggest you look at and possibly post this problem to the vlc mac forum.

  • PSE 7: Is it possible to use VLC instead of Quicktime to play movies?

Hi, I have VLC (VideoLAN)installed (using Vista). It plays my .mov video files. But PSE 7 still requests Quicktime to be installed. Isn't it possible to use VLC within PSE? Thanks. /Frank

It's not possible (that I know of) to play movies using the VLC engine within PSE.
You can try installing a QuickTime alternative and then you may be able to play the .mov files in the PSE Organizer, but I don't have PSE to tell you. See http://www.codecguide.com/qt_lite.htm for more info
you could go to http://www.adobe.com/go/wish/ and request this feature/functionality

  • Playing media using Apple TV

I can't play movies using Apple TV (1st gen) only.
When I try to select a movie on the Aplle TV it's reloading forever.
I can play a movie in iTunes and "send" it to my Apple TV.
    Thanks

The computer is responding to the remote.
You will need to go into system preferences - security - general. Click the padlock to access advanced - disable remote control infrared receiver.

No, you cannot seperate the audio and video stream.
You can use optical audio to a sound system (I use sony sound bar) and play the audio via that.

  • Is it possible to set up Time Capsule on one network and then access its stored data (movies) using Back to My Mac from another network that also has Apple TV to play them?

I recently purchased a Time Capsule to store data at my office.  I have an Apple TV at my home that I would like to start using to play my movies.  With the storage of the new Time Capsule, I am curious if I can somehow store my iTunes movies on the Time Capsule at my office and then use Back to My Mac to access the TC from my home and then play them via Apple TV.  Does this sound possible?  We have an iMac at the office that remains on 24/7 connected to the TC.

ATV cannot play movies from the TC, even if it is on your home network.. ATV is a streamer.. it is not a media player.. and the TC is a dumb as a board hard disk in a router.. so it has nothing in it either.
You cannot play movies from ATV without itunes, which streams to the ATV.
If the iMac is running 24/7 then you should be able to connect to the iMac remotely and run from iTunes on that, which could then play movies stored on the TC.. with the following issues.. if you use wireless on the iMac forget it. The iMac has to be ethernet connected as it has to pick up the movie on the library and play it back to the TC to network to your home.
The next issues is speed of slowest connection.
Your download to your home maybe great.. what is the upload speed from your office like??
If you pay for uploads and downloads you will pay for the movie 3x.. first to download it.. second to upload it.. office to net..  and third to download it again.. net to home..  Sorry but it is better to play the movie directly from online itunes store.
If you plan to try and play non-itunes movies over the connection, it won't work.. ATV as stated is linked to itunes and cannot play movie files.
Overall this sounds like you need to think it out a bit more.

A few months ago, I purchased a new iMac. I recently created a movie using iMovie. Then I found out that iDVD is not included. So I have the problem that I want to burn a movie that I can play on my DVD player and watch on a television. I rang Applecare and was told that I need a program called BURN.
Is this correct? I can export the movie from iMovie in a m4v format, but I think I need to convert this to iso format before I can burn the disc.
I know there are programs like TOAST that will do this, but it is expensive.
I would be very grateful for any assistance.

Burn will not do what you want, and there is no real substutute for iDVD.
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac?
Apple insists that the entire world has access to fast broadband (and are prepared to pay for the considerable bandwidth usage) and wants to distribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud, YouTube, Facebook, whatever) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that in reality not all users do, has so far had no effect on this policy. If you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone Apple may send you a free copy of iDVD. Stating that they would return their brand new Mac unless they received a copy of iDVD worked for some, but that is now said to have been withdrawn by Apple.
Also, you can complain bitterly via Apple’s Feedback link, perhaps suggesting that Apple could have provided a choice between burning DVDs and distributing home movies by other means. You may feel that Apple should not dictate how you destribute family videos or photos to distant relatives and friends, and should not assume that every user is prepared to pay for the excessive bandwidth usage charged by ISPs for huge downloads from the App Store:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that came with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or that comes with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD 7, i.e. iLife version 9 onwards. You should also do this if you plan to buy a new Mac anytime soon, as stocks of iLife that include iDVD will not be available for ever.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD. Also, of course, there is Roxio Toast, which is the best software for burning anything but again does not offer the flexibility of iDVD.
And if you think Microsoft are any better, their new Windows 8 operating system will not play DVDs, or burn them, unless customers buy an extra upgrade, the company has announced:  http://www.gizmag.com/windows-8-no-dvd-playback/22443/
In other words, computer manufacturers have declared optical media as dead, long before consumers are ready to stop using them, which is fine as long as they offered us a choice, but they won’t even do that. Flexibility and intuitive use of a computer seems to be a thing of the past.

  • Using internal Hitachi multi-drive as an external, does it still play movies?

Considering using the bay for super drive as a 2nd hard drive space.  Was wondering if anyone used their optical as an external, and if they did, does it still play movies or dvds?

I bought on of these HD adapters http://tinyurl.com/7455nek to get the files off of a G3 Wallstreet laptop HD. I loaned it to my grandson so he could use it to get files off of a PC HD.

  • QT 7 and higher won't play .mov data that QT 6 used to play.

I got several .mov files along with a biochemistry book. After having updated to QT 7, QT Player won't play some of these files. The progress bar displays a progress as it used to under QT 6. There is neither audio, and the screen stays black. However, the files are still played by older versions of QT, so they aren't corrupt. The movies feature a track type "flash".
Thank you for any helpfull info.

I also have this problem - loads of mov files with flash content that will no longer play. Using an older version of QT isn't an option as I wan't to play these at work.
Does anyone know of a converter that will play these files and convert them to another format?

  • Play movies from commercial DVD disks using an external DVD player?

Is it possible to play movies from commercial DVD disks using an external DVD player on Mac OS X 10.5.6? Thanks.

You might not need to install Tiger. If you pop in the installer DVD there might be the DVD Player under Additional Software/Applications. Then you can install that and watch DVDs.

I have used still photos to make a Quick Time movie using FCE.  The DVD made using i-DVD looks somewhat grainy and the motion isn’t smooth when played on my TV.  Other DVD’s I have made play much better and I am wondering if the problem is my Quick Time movie settings.  The Dimensions and size of the problem movie are 1920X1080 and 584 MB respectively, while the movies that play better  have Dimensions of 853X480 and are about 1.3 GB in size.  Is this the source of my problem and how do I change things for the better.

Are you exporting to QuickTime Movie, or to QuickTime Conversion?   For iDVD, you need to export to QuickTime Movie.   Exporting to QT Conversion will kill the quality if you are moving the video from FCE to iDVD.
The file size per se makes no difference.
What size (pixel dimensions) are the photos that you put into your 1920x1080 sequence?  Also, exactly what are the sequence properties ... is it 1920x1080i60 ... or i50?  In North America it should be i60.
853X480 is an odd frame size.  Where are you seeing this number?  It would appear to be DV-NTSC, which has a frame size of 720x480.  Your 1920x1080 frame size would not be DV-NTSC, it would be Apple Intermediate Codec.   DV and AIC will look different, for sure.
Also, your quality setting in iDVD can affect the final video.  You may want to check that also (in iDVD Preferences > Projects).  Set it to Professional Quality if at all possible.
