Have you tried a simple reset on the iPod? A reset can often fix weird things like this.
Just yesterday my daughter's friend's Nano wouldn't show up on our computer. I did a reset on the iPod and it showed up immediately after that.

As roaminggnome said, you're question is a bit vague, but I'll try to help. If you've downloaded a song from the interent, proposing it's a legal way, the song will be saved in your downloads folder. You can take it out of your downloads folder by dragging it to another location, I presume you know how, but you might need to change the file format so it will play in iTunes. For this, you can use a third party audio convertor. One that is easy to use on the internet is http://audio.online-convert.com/convert-to-mp3
Since we are trying to put the song in iTunes, we nned the mp3 or m4a format. At this website, you can just upload the song, don't change any of the settings, and click convert! Then you can download the converted song and drag it into iTunes like you would any other file. Hopefully this is sort of what you meant by playing downloaded songs from the internet...

ALTERNATIVE METHOD TO PLAY MUSIC FROM iPod without iTunes

Hey all. I'm gonna post here an alternative way to play songs/videos from your iPod on PCs/notebooks without iTunes installed.
Let's say you're at work and wanna play music from your iPod but your workplace's PC/notebook has no iTunes and installation of any programs are not allowed. Well, what you can do is:
1) Connect your iPod to the PC/notebook
2) Enable viewing of hidden items/folders by going to Folder Options, click on the 'View' tab, next click on the 'Show hidden files and folders' radio button. Click OK.
3) Go to the drive of your iPod, you should see a folder called iPod_Control.
4) Open up the folder, and you'll see a few folders called: Artwork, Device, iTunes, Music and Tones. Open up the 'Music' folder.
5) In the Music folder you'll see a few folders named Fn (where 'n' is a number). Open up any of these folders and you'll find your music files in it.
That's it. 5 easy steps to play music without iTunes. However, when you wanna upload songs to your iPod, please use iTunes. Hope you all found this useful!!

Right. Forgot to mention this part. I'm guessin' you tried this method. And obviously you've seen that the music files have weird file names like FZYA and so on. iTunes automatically changes the file names when you transfer your music to iPod. To know what are the title and artist of the songs are, right click on any blank space of the folder, View -> Details. If Details shows you nothing, click View -> Tiles. Hope that helps you all.

Cannot play music from Iphone on iTunes

This is the setup:
I have a home PC that I use to sync / buy content on my Iphone. When I come to work, I have none of this data on the PC, but I want to play the content of my Iphone through my PC.
When I click on the iphone triangle and click music, the content is all grey and I cannot play (or double click to play).
How can I play this music on my Itunes?

I've had this problem for ages. You've inspired me to find a fix and I appear to have found one.
I manually sync my iphone at home (computer A) and I wanted to play songs on Computer B at work. The songs were all greyed out on Computer B.
Now, to get around this I have selected "Manually manage music and videos" from the sync options in iTunes.
I have no other options selected for sync options as I do actually want to manually manage music rather than sync it.
Now, when I click on "Music" from within itTunes --> iPhone it is no longer greyed and is playable through Computer A and Computer B.
Think that made sense, if not let me know

How to play music from NAS to iTunes on MAC and PC (Win7)?

I have NAS in my home network and would like to play music stored on NAS to play in iTunes on MAC; iPad2, iPhone4 and PC which has Windows 7.
I have already changed iTunes Media folder location under 'Advanced' pointing to NAS music folder. Once all this done, I see exclamation i in front of the every song in iTunes.
Can some one please help me. I went to Apple store and ask this question, but no one seems to able to help me.

Just seeing this as I was browsing for a way to stream music from my NAS drive to an airplay capable receiver. I've been using the "filebrowser" app on my iPad and iPhone 4 and am very happy with it. It allows me to access my NAS drive from both devices and stream music and video to said devices. For example: I dock my phone in the kitchen and use filebrowser to play music directly from the NAS...it works great. I also use it to stream bike training videos to my iPad while I'm riding on a trainer in my basement. The native controls are very user friendly for both mp3's and video mp4's. I'm not huge on apple programs(iTunes for music playback) as they are usually restrictive and don't play nicely with other non apple devices...for $3, filebrowser should do the trick for you....now I have to figure out how to stream from the NAS to a pioneer brand airplay capable receiver without using iTunes.

Why isn't there any view options when playing music from devices in itunes?

I prefer to play all my music directly from my Ipod, but the truth is, itunes is useless on manually managing the content of large external devices, and the only major reason for this, as I see it, is the list-view only option.
I don't get why they've left out the grid view option. It would be so much qicker to pace through the ipod library to find what you're looking for, and it would look much cleaner. Considering how the ipod classic lacks any editing features, it would be nice to atleast have a more organized view when it's docked!
For the record I have started using Winamp again, as it feature much more options, but on the downside, it's much trickier to manage ipod playlists in winamp. So I rather wish apple would just open up the grid function, and hopefully the coverflow feature, for devices as well. I Can't believe why so few complain about this. It *****!!

If there are music tracks in the Music app but your can't hear them, then make sure that you haven't set the volume limit for the app at the minimum : Settings > Music > Volume Limit

On both my iPad and iPhone 5 I can no longer play music from my synched iTunes selections from my Mac mini because when I select a playlist it will only play afew songs and then quit the playlist, skipping around a lot.

What is wrong?

Try Groove for iPad. People seem to think it's a great replacement to the previous music app.

That's normal. A network drive won't mount by itself. You may want to add the drive to your login items and/or the login items of your boy's account.
He came over to update his iPod tonight. Now the library is inaccessible. It says that his account is not authorized for the folder.
Is that a USB drive? How have you defined access to that drive in AirPort Utility? If you set it to "Secure Shared Disks" "With accounts", you'll have to add his account.

Playing music from Apple TV from iTunes not on same network?

We have a massive estate with Apple TVs and were hoping to be able to play music from our iTunes thru the Apple TV. We don't have computers in the main house, only in the office on a completely separate network (which I think we need to have with Home Sharing).
Is there a way to have Apple TV play our music content either from our iTunes on the Mac in another place? or from an iOS device? or from iCloud?

Home sharing will require both the Mac and Apple TV to be on the same network, there is no way around that.
If you have iTunes Match then you could access your full iTunes library in the cloud via the Music icon on Apple TV.
There is a feature called peer to peer airplay, that allows an IOS device to stream to Apple TV without needing the same network. However, this requires a 3rd gen ATV and IOS device from 2012 or later.

Success!! There truly is a light at the end of the tunnel. Apple support really did come through and I am successfully back into my account. Ready to purchase more music. I followed the instructions, with patience I thought I lost, submitted my problem, someone emailed me back within two days and all is now perfect. Thanks again Apple.

Need assistance with recent upgrade. I installed 6.1.2 and now my iPad is sluggish and will not play music from iTunes.

1. Close all apps in the Task Bar. Double-click the Home button and hold apps down for a second or two. Tap the minus sign to close app.
2. Hold the Sleep and Home button down until you see the Apple Logo.

You may need to do a Restore in iTunes.
Clicking sounds from an iPod that has a hard drive is probably not a good thing. It is possible that your iPod's hard drive is becoming unreliable.

My mac gets slow when I play music from my iTunes library

Hi, aproximately six months ago I noticed that everytime I play music from my iTunes library that its stored in my 27" iMac's hard drive, the computer gets slow, the images start to flicker, the animatios on the dock and the one when u minimize or maximaze the windows, also flicker. As soon as I close iTunes the computer works fine again. When I play music from a CD this doesn't happen.
I've taken the iMac to two service providers along theese 6 months and neighther have been able to fix the issue. What they have diagnozed is an issue with the hard drive which has been changed 4 times already.
What could be the issue?

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new). Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
