Playing music in iTunes from iPod

Hi there,
I have two Macs (dual 2,7 G5 & 17" Powerbook). I have my i Tunes library on my G5 and my 60GB video iPod updates off of that library. To save drive space on my Powerbook, I used to use my iPod to store my music and would connect it to my Powerbook essentially using the iPod as an external drive. This worked great but lately my entire library is greyed out and I can't play anything off of the iPod through iTunes and I am not sure why. Any ideas anybody?

I think the iPod has to be set to manual mode (in preferences)
In auto-update mode, it won't do it.
The other way you could do it is to use your iPod as a disk only, and store your library there. You can then point your library on both Macs to the iPod.
It can be relocated in: preferences/advanced/general. You can point to the library on the iPod on both Macs.

  • Can one transfer music to itunes from ipod on new computer

How does one transfer music from ipod to itunes on new computer?

Connect your iPod to your new computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    SharePod Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Playing music in iTunes from an external HD

I moved 600gbs of music to an external HD to save HD space and run iTunes from the external. After the transfer, I told or pointed to  iTunes where the 'new' music is on the external HD but iTunes will not read the music - it is asking me to find each and every song one at a time? Thats a LOT of clicking if I really need to do that.
    Please help

I recently did the same thing (move my library to an external drive). What you want to do is have iTunes move the songs itself. iTunes keeps track of where each song is located. If you move the songs yourself, iTunes won't know and you end up in your situation. Just setting the media folder to the external drive won't be enough as that is only telling iTunes where to store NEW tracks.
What you want to do is bascially set the new media folder location and then have iTunes move all the tracks to that location. I followed the procedure here:

  • PLaying music in iTunes from external drive

I have all my music on an external drive. I want to be able to play this music in iTunes without copying the music to my internal HD. In Windows it doesn't copy to internal, but in OSX it does. Also, when I have music on my computer (internal) and the first time I click it to play it copied to my iTunes Music folder, thus creating 2 copies on my computer.

To prevent iTunes to copy the files, uncheck 'Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library' in Preferences>Advanced>General.

  • How to play music in itunes from external drive without copying files

Everytime I go to play a song in itunes, it imports it first. I am a DJ and don't want 200 gigs of music on my HD. There has to be some way to just play all of my songs off of my external HD w/o itunes importing the songs.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much for your help. This is my first Mac and I am getting use to how it operates. SInce I have gotten It, I usually just click on the song from my external then itunes imports it then plays it.
I use Serato when DJing which allows me to just access my external and play from there, which is what you suggested doing by creating a itunes library on my external.
I will create a library on my external and do like you suggested. That seems like it would solve all of my problems. I am using the instructions from here: http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/ to do it. Seems like it should be pretty straight forward.
Again, thank you for your help.

  • How do you play music in itunes from an external drive?

if the library and itunes folder are on the external drive, how do you play the songs from there through a laptop? I have gotten that dreaded "original file not found" message over and over again. Thanks.

Hold down the Shift key while launching iTunes. You'll be given a dialog box where you can select the iTunes library you want to use. Navigate to and select the iTunes folder in it's new location.

  • Music and itunes from ipod

so i was at my friends house a lil while ago and i got new songs from his i tunes(he just dragged and dropped the songs onto my ipod but switched my ipod from automatically updating my ipod from my home computer to manually adding songs) and now when i wanna add songs to my ipod i have to do it on both my ipod and on my i tunes
    so the qeustion is:
if i switch my ipod's setting back to auto-updating my ipod, will it erase all the songs i got from my friend that he put on there or will it just leave those alone and add the ones that i have on my itunes right now but on not on my ipod?
but pretty much will it delete the songs that i got from my friend or will it add those songs to my itunes now?
    windows XP

If you have songs/tracks/media from your friend's computer on your iPod and you plug your iPod into your computer (and it's set to auto-sync) then all of that will be deleted.
If you want to keep the stuff that you have from your friend, then you will have to keep your iTunes set to manually update.

  • Playing music in iTunes off my iPod Touch G1

    Hey everyone,
I am fairly sure I could do this with my old 30GB Video iPod but can't seem to do it with my new Touch. Basically I want to be able to play music within iTunes from my iPod not my library. I have music uploaded to my iPod and can play it over the headphones but when I plug it into iTunes it seems that all the music is there but grayed out and can't be played directly off the iPod but using my computer (iTunes) as the external speakers (Does that make sense?). Any ideas or anything I can do to make this work?

I don't ever remember being able to do this with earlier versions of iTunes and my iPod classic 80GB. I believe that playing the music from your computer is your only option (and you can plug your headphones into your computer if you don't want to listen to it through your speakers).

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

If you sign in to your Apple ID then your apps will be visible by clicking the "purchased" tab at the bottom of the screen.
Music you've purchased from Apple will appear automatically if you sign in to your account. Other music you'll need to download from your PC assuming you're not subscribed to iTunes Match.

  • HT1386 Will apps and/or music be erased from iPod if synced to a computer other than orginally used?

Will apps and or/music be erased from iPod if synced to a computer other than original one used?

    Yes. To avoid that:
    - Transfer iTunes purchases to the computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer other music by using a thrid-party program like one of those discussed here:
    Copy music
    - Connect the iPod to the computer and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up.
    - Restore the iPod from that backup.
The computer will now be your syncing computer in the future. Note that the backup that iTunes makes does not include synced media like apps and music.

Re: difference in folder and library size.
I discovered something ALARMING yesterday. The first part of this ISN'T it, but...
I have 86.09 Gb of music in the iTunes Media folder in Finder, between music and audiobooks, on my hard drive.
My Music library (in iTunes) is 61.70Gb, the audiobooks total 16.32Gb That comes to just over 78Gb per iTunes. So why the 8Gb discrepancy?
First, let me point out I have no album artwork for ANYTHING in my library - I removed it ALL last week as a space saving measure, which is relevant to a point I'll bring up later.
Since Snow Leopard, OS X uses a decimal count for noting file sizes. 1,000Mb is a Gigabyte, NOT 1024Mb - That's why a 500Gb HD actually says 499Gb instead of 465Gb like Windows.
iTunes however, uses a Binary count for file size. So what iTunes shows for library size will NOT be the same as what FInder shows for the same files.
Here's what I was alarmed about though:
After removing (supposedly deleting) all my album artwork, I was poking around in Finder and found that my iTunes folder had FOUR iTunes Music Library.xml files, at about 40Mb each.
There were also five iTunes Library.itl.old files in addition to the iTunes Library.itl and they were each about 40Mb. My Album Artwork folder was 2.1Gb AFTER removing ALL artwork from my entire library.
I deleted the contents of the Album Artwork folder and trashed ALL itl and xml files, which netted me another 2.4Gb of HD space.
I had to reload ALL my songs and audiobooks (which took about half an hour) but now I only have ONE itl file and ONE xml file for my library, and the artwork folder is now empty. In previous iTunes versions, if I deleted Artwork it DIDN'T remain in the artwork folder. Now that I KNOW it won't delete unless I go in and do it, I won't be adding any artwork to ANYTHING in my iTunes library again.
Theres' a lot of stuff that iTunes holds onto when it should be deleted... when I thought it WAS deleted.

When I purchase music through iTunes from my MacBook Pro, my iPhone 4 iTunes app cannot detect those purchase to allow them to download to my phone. Any thoughts on how I can remedy this and make all of my purchased music available on my phone without requiring syncing?

So I have been searching the iStore for Airplay and I find lots of information about what it is, but nothing about how much it costs, how/where to buy it, etc.?
Fortunately, AirPlay does not cost anything as it is a streaming protocol used by Apple. Currently, the AirPort Express and Apple TV are AirPlay-ready. A number of other companies, like JBL, iHome, Denon and Klipsch are also rumored to be working on AirPlay versions of their products.
Your other option would be to get an AirPort Express and connect it to your Onkyo analog or optical digital audio input and stream from iTunes that way. I currently do this with my 10+ year old Harmon Kardon HT receiver.
