Playing Music purchased under previous email account

I purchased music under an email account that no longer exists. When I try to play the music it still asks for the old email and password. I cannot recall the old password so therefore I cannot play any of my music. What is the work around for this? Thanks...

You can recover or reset the password for that account through this link:

  • Can't play songs purchased under old AOL account after upgrade to Apple ID

I guess I've been abandoned by the iTunesStoreSupport. They basically told me what caused my problem and now will not return any of my emails.
This message is mostly to inform anyone who "upgrades" an old AOL iTunes account to an Apple ID to be sure to use the same credit card for the new Apple account that you used for your AOL account.
About 2 years ago I "upgraded" my AOL iTunes Store account to be an APPLE ID. When I did that, I used a different credit card for my Apple ID than I had been using for my old AOL account. Big mistake. At the time I had no idea it would cause problems later. I don't remember seeing anything at all warning me about the importance of that at the time. Now, according to Shwetha at iTunesStoreSupport it is "important to use the same credit card for a successful conversion".
Everything worked fine with iTunes for the past 2 years, but a month ago I upgraded my hard drive in my computer and promptly recycled my old hard drive. Another mistake on my part.
A few days later when I went to play a song purchased under the old AOL account I got stuck in that endless loop where I get the prompt "This computer is not authorized to play __. Would you like to authorize it?" Then it asks me to Upgrade my AOL account, but I already did that 2 years ago. I went ahead and attempted to upgrade the AOL account again, but I was still stuck in the endless loop. (note: I did successfully authorize the computer for my Apple ID with no problems.)
I followed every step in the Troubleshooting Guide "support.apple.com/kb/TS1389" including the step where I delete the SC Info folder, but I was still stuck in that endless loop of authorizing / deauthorizing.
Shwetha was very professional and did work with me pretty quickly through 3 rounds of emails and various troubleshooting attempts. But as soon as we realized that I had used a different credit card when upgrading the AOL account to an Apple account and that the conversion was not successful, they stopped replying to my emails. I guess I'm a lost cause.

I repeat here a post I made elsewhere: I hope that it helps you, and, if it does, please post the info elsewhere.
You can get this problem solved!
I encountered this problem yesterday, when I tried to play some songs in my ITunes library on a new computer; this is an ITunes library that I had moved from my old computer.
I called Apple Support, and the excellent Tech person began looking into the problem.
Meanwhile, while I was waiting for him, I Googled the problem (which I should have done first): lots and lots of people (I discovered) have bumped into this same frustrating problem.
Yes: the problem arises when you move to a new computer with an ITunes library that includes songs you bought, way back when, using an AOL ID.
Apple Support contacted ITunes. And ITunes tracked down my AOL account, and then issued me (that is, me and Apple Support) a new Apple ID. There are two or three additional steps; they are not hard, but you need the combo of help from Apple Support and ITunes. The key thing is getting the new Apple ID, which you must have, and which, once it has done its work, you then can ignore..
I can now listen to everything--and I am signed in to ITunes using my current, usual Apple ID.
Note: All of this would be easier and simpler for us if we could actually speak to someone at ITunes; the only way we can get to a "live" person there is by contacting someone at Apple Support.

  • Cannot play music purchased under old apple id after new hard drive installed

Replaced crashed HD and used Time Machine to restore to 10.7.5. Had changed my Apple ID a while backe (couple months). Now music purchased with old ID will not play, asking me to authorize under old ID, have no idea what the password was and the email address is no longer valid, so...how do I rgain access to those albums purchased under old ID? It plays on my iphone fine.

You may still be able to reset the password to your old Apple ID via iforgot.apple.com.
The old tracks will continue to play on the iPhone as long as they are on it but you may find they get deleted if you try to sync with your library while it isn't authorized for your old ID.

  • I changed my email address and now cannot play items purchased with previous email. This only became a problem after I got a new computer. The original email address no longer even exists. How can I access these hundreds of items?

I changed my email address a few years ago. I did not have any problems after this change until I got a new computer. Now I cannot play items that were purchased under the previous email. I entered the password that I used and it doesn't recognize it. I tried "forgot your password" in every combination possible. I never received any emails at the old email address. Now the old email address no longer even exists. How can I access these hundreds of items?

The old email address may well still be valid as your iTunes AppleID, however if you have no other email associated with that ID you clearly won't get any automated emails to it.
I still use an old defunct email for my iTunes AppleID.

You may want to try to manage the old ID here:

Use the original email address and password.

  • Play can't play music purchased with another email address

I can't play music that was purchased with old email address on an older mac, how does that work?

If the tracks are DRM-restricted you'll need to authorize the computer for the Apple ID that was used to purchase the songs. Pull down Store > Authorize This Computer and type in the credentials for the Apple ID.

  • V 7.0.2 - Unauthorized to play music purchased with old email address acct.

Has anyone else stumbled onto this? I have one iPod and one computer which I buy all of my music off iTunes from - But I had an old email address last year that I used to buy a lot of my music with. Since I upgraded, I cannot sync, play, or burn any purchased music that was purchased with the old email address. I tried authorizing under my new email address and password (I even get a sucessful message) but then when I go to play - it gives me the message "This computer is not authorized to play this song - would you like to authorize it?" But the message shows my old email address.
    Any advise is appreciated.

I'm sorry that I have no solution to offer but I do have the same problem. Apple pointed out to me that I need to aothorize my computer using my previous account information (AOL) but that didn't work. Very annoying to have to do this when upgrading software. I will think twice before upgrading again or before buying from iTunes for that matter.

  • Music purchased under old AOL account

I am unable to authorize a few songs because I no longer have an AOL account or I am remembering the wrong password with no way to recover it. What shall I do?

I am having the same problem. however itunes doesnt let me sign in with aol three times, after the second time it says 'Forget Password, call 1800 blah blah blah'. this is so annoying because my songs were playing fine until I upgraded to the most recent itunes.

  • Playing music purchased with apple id from closed email account

i can't play music purchased with an apple id from another email account that no longer exists
    Please Help!!!

Is it an old Apple ID of yours? If so, then whether the email is still valid or not, the Apple ID is still there. You need to authorize that ID to your computer by signing it onto iTunes and then clicking on Store on the top menu, then Authorize this computer.
If you don't remember the password to that old ID, you can change it here: Apple - My Apple ID
If you don't remember your Security Questions, you can have them reset by iTunes Support:

I have the same problem (deleted email account). I think I mistakenly set up an account when I was buying an Apple product online, not realizing that it would be the same ID as my iTunes.
What is the way to actually contact Apple?
I have been clicking around in circles for hours! Will I have to pay them to resolve this? I don't have any products still have applecare . . .

  • "One machine is authorized to play music purchased with this account"

    Hey Guys,
I just made my Apple ID my iTunes account, and I just reviewed the account info. For some reason it says: "One machine is authorized to play music purchased with this account"
I thought up to five computers are authorized to play music downloaded from iTunes?
Did I do something wrong, is this normal?

Up to 5 can be authorized but you have only authorized 1 machine.
If you have another machine you want to authorize, fire up iTunes on it and authorize it. You don't need to authorize it unless you have iTunes purchases on it.

Get copies of the song files and add them to your iTunes library.

  • I have iphoto on my apple airwave. It is needing upated, but I am unable to update due to my exhusband. It was purchased under his itunes account. I can no longer even see my pics. What do I do.

Can I back up my iPhoto library without being able to get into it? Such a mess.
Just try what LarryHN recommended. Move the iPhoto application from the Applications folder to the Trash, then go the main page of the App Store, sign into the store menu with your AppleID, enter iPhoto into the Search Field.  When iPhoto is found in the store, look, if you can buy it for free. Probably there will be a "Get" button beside the application. Then you can install it for free.
Before you run the newly installed iPhoto, make sure you have a backup.  You should really not risk to run a new iPhoto version on your iPhoto library, before you copied the iPhoto Library to a different drive.
iPhoto needs to convert the library to a different format, and that can go wrong in rare cases, but it happens. You simply need to have a copy of your library before you risk the library upgrade.
