Playing MVI files in iPhoto

Why does iphoto say I don't have sufficient permission to play MVI files? Didn't have any issues before.

Are you able to play the MVI files outside of iPhoto?  If so launch iPhoto with the Option+Command keys held down and select Repair Permissions in the window that appears:

  • How do I move mvi files from iPhoto into iMovie?

I am trying to create eventually an iDVD but want to put together several mvi files I took. I am doing it right in iphoto to allow me to import them.

    Hi Margaret,
I'm not certain, but try this...
In finder, locate the video, then drag & drop it on iMovie's icon.

  • How to play AVI or MVI files?

In Iphoto, I'm getting the error below when trying to play these videos (avi or mvi files).
    Error: "Operation couldn't be completed. (OS-Status Error-54)."?
Some WMV files also aren't working too.
I have already tried VLC, QuickFlash (and iPhoto 9.6) to play.
    MacBook Air
    OSX Yosemite
    Version 10.10.1
Processor: 1.8 GHz Intel Core i5
What video type actually does work on Macs??
    Thanks.

Please read this article to see if it helps: http://discussions.nokia.com/t5/Pool-of-Knowledge/What-to-do-if-video-does-not-play-well-on-your-pho...
As for the app Smart Movie, well that may not be a fully featured video player and as this is a user to user forum for support of Nokia products and services only, you won't find any help here unfortunately.

  • How do i get MVI files to play in imovie?

i keep trying to get a video file to play, but it just shows up grey (unclickable) when i go to import it. could it have to do with the fact that its an MVI file? and, if so, how can i change it so it'll play?

    Try downloading and installing Perian.
    http://perian.org/
If you still can't import, use QT Pro to convert the movie to DV.

  • Iphoto wont play movie files and wont double click for zoom or edit

Hi i bought my first ever macbook a week ago, love everything on it,iphoto worked well but today i wanted to show someone a movie file on my camea which i have in my iphoto libray clicked on it and it usually opens, today nothing!!! this file has opened loads before because its a holiday movie, loads of people have seen it but now nothing.
Also my double click to zoom or edit preference seems to do nothing whichever box you check in preffence nothing happens.
Being new to mac i hope i can find some answers!!
    Chris

    Chris:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. First Control+click on the movie's thumbnail and select Show File from the contextual menu. When you get to the original movie file double click on it to see if you can open it in Quicktime. If not then it's more a QT issue. If it opens OK in QT go to the next procedure.
Delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder and try again. If iPhoto is still misbehaving log into another account and try the same operations in iPhoto there. If still not working you may have to reinstall iPhoto from the disk it came one. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder. After you get iPhoto reinstalled run the latest update for it, 7.1.3 if needed.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • MVI files all turned to jpeg's

    Hello,
I have just opened up iPhoto to watch a movie I had in the library and it appears that all the MVI files I had in there have now changed to jpegs and I can't watch any of them! It has been a while since I watched them and the library has been moved a couple of times since.
I have tried locating the files in Finder and both copys are the same. Is there something that I may have done that has caused this. I can only assume that there is also no way to recover them. I do have a back up copy at home but I'm a long way from there and I think I have done back up copies recently without knowing about this and therefore may have exactly the same problem there.
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated,
    Philip

    Philip:
Where and how did you move the library? As you know there will be a jpg version of it in the Data folder but the mvi version should be located in the Originals folder. What happens when you double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto? How big is the copy that's in the Originals folder. If it's the size that the movie should be try changing the extension to .mvi and see if it will play.
    Do you Twango?

  • Getting WMV and MVI files to itunes. And ipod

I recently filmed a video of a family event. And wanted to transfer the video to Itunes. The original file extension was mvi. but i also changed the file to wmv. But, itunes would not allow me to import or click and drag into my library. Any Help?

iTunes cannot play WMV or MVI files (nor, BTW, can you change a format just by changing the filename extension). You'll need to convert the video to a format iTunes can handle. Search this forum for "video convert" and you should find a number of threads with suggestions as to utilities you can use to do the conversion.

  • How do I move AVI files from iPhoto to an AVI player app?

I have transferred some files from an SD card on to my iPad. They're stored as AVI files in iPhoto but I can't get them to play. I've downloaded an app called Playable which can play AVI but don't know how to transfer the files in to the app.

Are you able to play them? If not and the fact that the Show File gets you nowhere indicates that those video files are missing from the hard drive. Download Find Any File and search for one of the avi files by full name including extension.

  • Working with RAW files in iPhoto 5.0.4 and Elements 4.0.1

I take photos in RAW mode and download them to iPhoto. When I try to edit the photo in iPhoto, the picture is a tiny little file that is impossible to enlarge with any sort of clarity. Also, the word "RAW" does not appear anywhere on the iPhoto window like I read it is supposed to.
When I drag the file to Photoshop Elements, I get an editing window that has none of the tools usually associated with JPEG files. I get a separate window in which I can darken or lighten the image, that's it.
Clearly, I'm doing something wrong. No one in their right mind would ever use RAW if this is how it works.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Jack!
If you're new working with RAW files, your right, it just doesn't make sense. RAW <imho> is a bit overrated. One thing you will need to keep in mind when shooting in RAW, is you will still need to take a well exposed image. What RAW files will allow are CHANGES in all areas of the image v. JPEG which may allow you to ADJUST a few settings in the image. My only suggestion would be to kepp playing around with PSE until you get the hang of it, it is an excellent image editing software. But realize, a well exposed JPEG and RAW file are hard to tell apart...
Personally, I do not directly download RAW files through iPhoto but will create a folder and download to here, and simply drage folder to iPhoto to import (which are then 'converted' into JPEG files). This way I have the original RAW images safely located outside of iPhoto as well as in iPhoto. You should set Elements as your choice of application to edit files inside iPhoto.
    Good luck, Rick

  • Canon IXUS 950 won't import large AVI files into iPhoto

The new canon Ixus 950 IS wont import large (over 50mb) AVI files in iPhoto, why not?
They sit on the SD card and then sometimes subsequent pics and video's don't upload.
If there are say, 3 x 40mb files they dont upload either... After waiting ages the box pops up, unable to import.
I can individually import the AVI files under 50mb
I also note that the hard drive icon for the camera does not appear on the desktop or the finder so I could not 'drag' them in either...
    Any ideas?
    David

I have a similar problem with importing large AVIs from my Canon A610. iPhoto would import everything else (usually) except the large AVIs, which it claims is unreadable. In this particular case (~470MB file), it plays in QuickTime, I've resaved it using QT (still won't import) and converted it from MJPEG to Cinepak (still won't import). I'm now considering cutting the AVI up into smaller chunks and importing those... but any other options before that?
Misc computer details: Main HD is 120GB with 30 for Boot Camp, 80 remains for Mac OS X, but the iPhoto Library is on an external HD (also 120GB, same model as internal HD except not SATA) formatted to FAT32. Would 10.4.11 make a difference here?

  • How do I export video files from iPhoto to a backup external hard drive for safekeeping?

How do I export video files from iPhoto to a backup external hard drive for safekeeping?  Each time I try, the video will not play from the external hard drive.

Use the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option with Kind = Original.  That should get the original video file exported.  Try to export one to the Desktop first and open it with Quicktime Player.  If all goes well export the rest to a folder on the EHD. How is the EHD formatted?  It should be OS X Extended (journaled).

  • HT3775 How do I import AVCHD  (.mts) files to iphoto and quicktime

How do I import, save, and play AVCHD (.mts) files to iphoto '11 and/or Quicktime?

First thing I'd try is deleting the iMovie Preferences. In the Finder, hold down the Option key and select Library from the Go menu. Navigate to the Preferences folder and find the com.apple.imovie.plist file and delete it.
    Try opening iMovie.
If that doesn't work, restart holding down the shift key. It will run some disk checks (progress bar displayed), and then boot to the login window. It will say it is in safe mode on the login screen. Log in and check if iMovie works in safe mode.
From there, I'm not sure. Maybe boot into recovery hd and repair the disk.

  • Quicktime Wont Play MPG Files

    Hi,
Just bought my first Mac - loving it. Only issue I have so far is that I have a load of video camera clips with an .mpg extension, which I copied onto an external drive when I had my PC. Now when I come to play these files, it comes up with "The movie xxxxxx.mpg can't be opened. You may need to install additional software to open this type of file.
Wherever I look, it says Quicktime will play .mpg files, so I can't understand why they wont work. All the photo's on the same drive have gone into iPhoto no problem. When I go onto "tell me more" it starts going on about downloading additional media support. Not sure if I'm missing something simple!
    Please help!
    Thanks,
    Darran.

Yea...I did this when I got my Mac for Christmas 2009. I can watch the videos no problem...WITHOUT SOUND! If I use VLC everything works right, but I want to be able to burn the videos to DVD to watch somewhere else too. I bought a Mac because this was supposed to be easier...NOT!
Thinking of going back to a PC. At least everyone knows they have issues.

  • How can I import DNG files into iPhoto 8?

Shooting with a Canon Rebel XT, I've downloaded RAW files onto my hard drive, edited them in Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) and saved them as digital negatives (DNG) with the .dng extension. Bridge and iPhoto work with these just fine, but iPhoto doesn't seem to want to import them.
Aside from saving them as jpegs or TIFFs, is there any way to get these files to play nice with iPhoto 8?

I'm having the same problem with iPhoto after editing my images in Bridge and converting the files to DNG before importing to iPhoto. The metadata on the DNG file will not show up in iPhoto when I import DNG files. Yet, if I convert the DNG files to JPEG and import the JPEG files into iPhoto all the metadata and keywords in the original DNG files is imported. I use Bridge and CS3 for editing but want to use iPhoto for asset management.

  • Using Quicktime to Play AVI files

My Canon PowerShot creates AVI movie files. These play fine on my mac through iPhoto. I then drag them to my desktop so that I can attach them to an email. When I email them to family who also have macs (who are on 10.4.2) with QuickTime, they are unable to to open them. When I email them to my Windows PC it says that the file is not a movie file and cannot be opened with QuickTime. I've tried importing it to imovie and saved it as a .mov but that did not help.
How is one supposed to play an AVI file outside of iphoto?
These are some of the errors I get:
QuickTime cannot open the file: "MVI_1670.MOV"
it is not a file that QuickTime understands (-2048)
    Or Error -32

    hi Nat,
I got the avi file in my email. this is what happened to me:
I waited for a couple of minutes for it to download then double clicked the icon file for the avi in the email and nothing happened.
I then hit the "save" button to save to the desktop. I did this twice and nothing was saved to the desktop.
I then tried to drag the file from the email body to my desktop and got the spinning ball. Mail turned unresponsive and I finally had to force quit it.
I went to .mac webmail and opened your mail there. I clicked to download the avi from the webmail. took a couple of seconds and then it opened in quicktime just fine. You have an adorable doggie!!
Next I went back and opened Mail.app again. This time I went to Window>Activity viewer to see what was happening.
In Activity Viewer I see that it is stuck on "downloading attachment" and "caching attachments"
It's been over 10 minutes and it still has those two things showing in the Activity Viewer.
Ok, 14 minutes went by and now the AVI file is finally showing up in my email message and I can play the file within the message.
I don't know but maybe they didn't give the file enough time to download to their computer. It certainly gave me problems until it was all downloaded.
I have the latest OS and the latest Quicktime and it plays fine on my computer.
