Playing my AppleTV through TV + a receiver

Hi,
Just wondered if anyone could confirm the following will work: (the guy in the apple store could not!)
Connect my appletv to my Tv & 5.1 sounds system. Would i then be able to play music through my sound system and then change selection on my TV to allow me to watch TV at the same time?
Also... AVI files, can these be converted to a format which can be used on appletv?

Of course it will work... that is the basic form of the media server approach. That's how I have mine set up. I have the optical outlet going to my pre/pro ( and the component video also... but that is immaterial..). If I want sound only, I don't have to even turn the TV on (except for initially picking what I want the ATV to play...) . Once the ATV is up and running, you can change TV channels independently. Obviously, you can't "see" what is showing on the ATV video, but the sound output is absolutely independent of the video, even if you have the HDMI instead of Optical going into your receiver.
When you switch channels on the TV, the ATV doesn't know.

My wild guess is they were trying to close some kind of security (DRM) hole and ended up making the AppleTV less useful for streaming music than an AirPort Express. Sigh.

AppleTV has no analogue connections.
It has HDMI which can go to your TV or in theory to an AV receiver equipped with HDMI inputs.
Some HDMI amps/receivers and HDMI switches can cause glitches with AppleTV but it really depends on the particular device.
AppleTV also has optical out, so if you only wanted a connection for Dolby Digital or stereo feeds from the AppleTV you could connect AppleTV to teh TV via HDMI and also run optical to the amp.
Audio is output over HDMI and optical simultaneously.

Have you tried adjusting the "Audio Out" and the "Dolby Digital" settings in settings > audio and video? It may be worth trying several combinations of these settings, although typically it is the "Dolby Digital" setting that causes most problems for users.
Also make sure that you have correctly mapped the input port on your sound system to the output, if you are unsure about how to do this, refer to the manual that came with your sound system.
Have you tried playing various content sources (i.e. podcasts, music, iTunes Store video, other video etc), do you have the same problem with all types of content? If you use optical you might also check that you can see a red light at the end of your optical audio cable. Is your optical audio cable plugged straight into your sound system, or does it go through a switch or other device?

For sound, try the audio output port and connecting to the RCA audio input ports on your Pioneer receiver. Use something like this:

If you're just looking to play audio, the easiest way is to buy an AirPort Express and connect your stereo to the miniplug jack, then play using AirPlay. That's how I do it! And as an added bonus, it can extend your wireless network.

Go to the summary tab of your iPod in iTunes. There should be an option to Manually Manage Music and Video, or something to that effect. Make sure that's checked. That may do it.

on you laptop you will open itunes. up next to the play button you will see the little airplay symbol, you need to click that, press Apple TV, then select some music.

Have you checked the Edit Menu/Preferences/Audio Hardware ASIO settings? Do you have any 3rd party audio devices incorporated in your computer environment?

and, in the 12.0 Folder, is the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file that you delete. If that does not work, then delete the whole 12.0 Folder in which the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file exists. Make sure that you are working with Folder Option "Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives" active so that you can see the complete path cited.
Do you have installation files or installation disc with the purchased serial number in case we need to resort to uninstall/reinstall?

I have a new PC and I tunes had to be added from my old PC to my new one, now some of my music is only playing half way through on both my PC and IPOD Classic

Are these songs that you purchased from the iTunes Store or imported from outside of iTunes? If there are iTunes purchases, delete them from your main iTunes library and redownload them again at no cost via iCloud.

Trying to play iPhone library through iTunes on my work computer

I have my iPhone synced with my home computer. I authorized my computer at work (HP laptop) in iTunes with my iPhone connected and recognized. When I click on the iPhone in iTunes, I can see all of the music, but it is grey and you can't click on any of the songs. I just want to be able to play the songs, not transfer them. If anyone knows how to do this, I would really appreciate your help.
