Playing old games on OSX

Does anyone know if there is something I can get to play old Mac games. I really want to play my MDK again. I have a macbook Pro.

You need an emulator. (i,e. - software that emulates the hardware required to run the application.)
I am not sure what MDK is. Depending on how old, and what special graphics requirements, you may or may not be able to run some of those older pre-OS X/Classic applications under emulation.
OS 9 and earlier games that require Classic and a PPC (G3/G4/G5) CPU to run in OS X might run under the OS 9 emulator called Sheep Shaver on the Intel Macs. I have only heard about it in these forums, no personal experience.

  • Playing Old Games

I've been trying to play old games on my emac, it has Classic on it, but I can't get Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego to install, the one game I really want to play. lol! Is there a way I can make it work, I am desperate to? I know it was originally made for 7.something but I thought it should be able to install on Classic but it won't. Can I hook up my old G3? Would that work? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. This is also the only Carmen Game that is not OSX (native).

I will try and boot Classic natively when I get home.
There is no such beast as boot Classic natively. You either boot Mac OS 9, or use Classic. Powerbook G4s with USB ports on the rear of the machine can boot Mac OS 9. Powerbook G4 with USB ports on the side of their keyboards can only use Classic. Mac OS X 10.5 and later don't allow running the Classic environment, but will on Powerbook G4s with USB ports on the rear of the machine allow booting into Mac OS 9.
If your Mac supports booting into Mac OS 9, you will have installed the Mac OS 9 drivers as stated here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA26834?viewlocale=en_US
and then installed Mac OS 9 that either came bundled with your Mac, or later retail version of Mac OS 9 which looks like * with no update or upgrade on the label. Finally, Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Startup Disk will let you switch to Mac OS 9 by selceting the Mac OS 9 system folder and selecting restart. Macs post the 9.2.1 release can only use their prebundled Mac OS 9 disc or restore discs to install Mac OS 9. Macs released after the July 2002 Jaguar 10.2 release, have a restore installer that installs the Mac OS 9 system folder on their prebundled discs.
If your Mac has 10.4.11 or earlier installed and supports Classic, Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Classic can be set to launch the Classic environment when an application is launched, or your machine boots into Mac OS X, or when you manually select it from the System Preference. That same restriction of installer discs applies, but no Mac OS 9 driver needs to be installed. Unfortunately Classic lacks certain driver support for graphics and sound making some games lack any support whatsoever.

  • Playing old games on new Mac

    Hello,
I have a macbook pro and i want to play this old powerPC mac game called Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. Seeing as how my computer is intel based, i dont have classic environment. I put the game CD into my computer and it reads, but doesnt allow me to play the game. when i click the icon to start the game, it gives an error message:
"you cannot open the application becase it is not suported on this system."
i know there has to be a way for me to get this game going. any ideas?

    Hi, Atturo -
Apple does not support Classic or OS 9 on any Intel-based machine.
However, there are some 3rd-party emulators available, each of which allows the use of certain pre-OSX OS's on an Ontel Mac. This article discusses some of them -
    http://www.atpm.com/12.09/classic.shtml
The one I've seen mentioned the most is SheepShaver. There's more info about it here -
    SheepShaver
Whether any of them will work sufficiently well for your purposes is a different issue. Many games do not work well, or at all, in an emulatorPrograms which require direct access to the machine;s hardware, such as many games do, usually will not run well, or at all, in an emulator or equivalent environment.
It may be simpler for you to look around for an older used machine, like an iMac of appropriate vintage, for this purpose - such machines can be got for not much money.

  • Playing Old Games On Intel Mac

Is There A Emulator Or Something Ive Tryed On My Old G3 (Running OS X 10.3.9 And OS 9.2.2) And Get The Same Thing.

It should work on the G3 if you have "Classic" instaled.

  • Playing old games on OS X version 10.5.3

I can't play my favorite game ever because it says the computer doesn't support the "classic environment".
Is there a way around this?
    Thanks.

    See my FAQs*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html
    http://www.macmaps.com/macgamepages.html
As you'll see any old games that require Classic essentially require an operating system that hasn't been updated since 2001.
Booting into Mac OS 9 gives you full driver support of Classic applications.
Using Classic only gives you partial support of Classic applications.
10.5 eliminates Classic, but still supports booting into 9 if you have a pre-2003 Mac (the 1 to 1.25 Ghz MDD G4 with no Firewire 800 which was available in 2003 and later new was really a pre-2003 Mac) that is 867 Mhz or faster.
PowerPC Macs released 2003 and later could only use Classic when booting into 10.4.11 or earlier. A Firewire hard drive or second partition allows you to have 10.4.11 or earlier simultaneously installed with 10.5 on the same Mac allowing you to use those older software titles.
2006 and later Macs use the Intel CPU, and they can't boot into 9, nor can they use Classic.
You can find used and refurbished Macs*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/usedrefurbished.html
which will allow you to run older games if they haven't been upgraded to current compatibility.
The irony is, 2006 and later Macs have better hardware support for all Windows and Linux operating systems than older Macs, thus allowing you to run in virtualization Windows or Linux at native speeds, and giving you full compatibility with Windows and Linux games which was only possible through emulation before.

  • Play old games on new ipod;

I purchased games with my old IPOD classic (how do I know if it's a fifth generation, a classic or a sixth generation ipod? My old ipod was 30 gig and I bought 3 games for it. After that ipod took a dive (literally), I purchased a new ipod 80 gig - I believe sixth generation? While my old games show up under "applications" in iTunes, they DO NOT show up or synch with new Ipod.
Since I have new ipod - are those games no longer usable? at 4.99 each? At least itunes should provide an upgrade to the games already purchased and licensed to the new sixth generation version?

  • Playing old games on Mac OS X

I'm trying to install some older games (97-00) onto my macbook pro, but I can't get them installed. When i click on the disc, it asks for a application to open it with, and I can't figure one out that works. Is there any way to get these games installed and working?

It depends on what OS these games were released for. Were they for Mac OS 8/9, or for some version of Mac OS X? If they were for Mac OS 8/9, then there's probably no practical way you can run those on your MacBook Pro. Sheepshaver is the only way to run Classic apps on an Intel system, but its performance is often too low for games. You could try it, though, and see if it would work for you (Sheepshaver is old and its compatibility with Snow Leopard I don't know).

  • Play old games on a new mac???

I've got a lot of old educational games (Shcolastic, JumpStart...) at my home but they simply don't run on my iMac!
Isn't there some way to run OS 9 games on 10.5?

    Hi aglifribbason;
You can read more about Basilisk here.
It is capable of executing some OS 9 programs on Intel Mac. It is not simple to install. There is also some question as to it's legality because you must get a copy of the ROM code for a Mac in order to install.

  • How can I play iPad games like Clash of Clans on my iMac or MBP

I have watched a bunch of videos on YouTube that allegedly state that by installing an application such as (but not limited to) XCode I can play iPad games on my Macs. I have not been able to get ANYTHING to work. Has Apple or any 3rd party ever came up with a way to play IOS games on OSX? Xcode specifically was stated in the videos as only being able to run on OSX 10.7 or later. Another video said that it requires 10.8.4 or later. I run 10.8.5. After the 30 minute download and install (big file) it told me that my OSX was not compatible with the application. I got Xcode from the App store.

Thank you xcfdanyboy; however, I already checked out this guys youtube video (blip.tv/simonvideo). The problem for me is I do not have a google account, and will never voluntarily give google any information about me that would be needed to secure a google account. I do not even visit youtube using the traditional internet (WWW). I have not and will never again trust google after they released their updated "privacy" policy on March 1 2011 (or 2012). I do not even their search engine any more (sadly because I loved it).
I will check out your 2nd suggestion. Thank you again for responding to me though.
Nope, the 2nd suggestion also requires me to divulge info to google. Thank you again for both of your suggestions, they will just not work for me. I guess I may be relegated to playing on my Lady's game on her Ipad unless I buy my own Ipad some day. Although I really do not want to drop another $700+ for another Ipad simply so I can play a free game. Who knows.

  • Old games on a macbook?

Hi, total noob here.. i'd love to play old Lemmings, for instance, or Quake, but they just won't play.. I don't want to have to split my mac into part-windows or anything like that - are there patches available so I can emulate an old OS in order to play old games?
    please keep answers simple...

    Hey there,
You may be able to run the Sheep Shaver Emulator. It's page can be found below and can answer more of your questions in regards to its use. Hope this helps.

If you made a backup before you restored it you can restore your iPhone from a backup and your game data should be restored.  When you connect your iPhone in iTunes you can right click on it in the sidebar and select restore from backup.

  • I got an old game set up for system 7.5 and my 10.6.8 wont run it.  Is there a download of the older systems that would allow me to play this game?

Any ideas on how to get this old game working on the newer model computer?  The message I get is that it wont run it "because Classic environment is no longer supported".

You could look into Sheepshaver which supports older OS versions but I hear can be very tricky to install.  you may also find that a game will not work on it because games often want to control the hardware directly and an OS7 game will have absolutely no idea how to run your computer.  Frequently it is recommended you just buy an old Mac capable of running OS7.
Even if you had a Classic-capable computer it is still quite possible it would not run an OS7 game. I found many of my OS7 games stopped working even when I ran a computer actually booted to OS9.
Which game is this?  Some old favorites are being re-released for OSX, e.g. Solarian.
By the way, it would be better to post this in the correct forum ((probably Snow Leopard) since this forum is intended for questions about how to use this web site.
