Playing on DVD

Is it possible to play an IMovie on a regular DVD player?

You will have to do some so-called DVD authoring whether that is through iDVD or a program like Roxio Toast is up to you. Otherwise, all you can do is drag and drop a .mp4 file onto a disk and hope for the best. Both iDVD and Toast will add things like menus and navigation controls along with the underlying folders and structure that the DVD player understands and can play back properly. Without that extra bit of structure the average DVD player doesn't really know what to do.

This is not an area I have much experience in......I rarely insert DVDs and I have never had a similar problem.
When the DVD is in the drive (and DVD players is open) click on File>get disk info.

  • No sound when playing a DVD on my Lenovo 3000 N200 (0769-A44)

    Hi,
I recently got an N200 under Vista Home Premium.  Everything is doing well, except an annoying problem with PowerDVD 7 which is factory-installed.  When I play a DVD with PowerDVD, there is no sound.  With Windows Media player, MediaCenter and even MediaPlayer Classic, the sound is there.  Only with PowerDVD is there no sound.
Any hint on how to solve this ?
    Thanks !

Update 2008-04-30 : the problem only appears when playing commercial DVD that rely on AC3 codec for sound. For recorded DVD that use MPEG2-Layer2, sound is OK. Seems to be a limitation of PowerDVD OEM. However, if there is a solution ...

Thanks for sharing this. For the moment, and until someone finds a solution, I am relying on WMP and also on an opensource player that can play DVD, Media Player Classic :

Very easy to use. May be it will solve your problem with the DVD player noise ? There is also an excellent media play, that plays DVD, and that I intend to install : JetAudio 7, from Cowon.

  • DVD from iDVD won't play on DVD player

I have made a movie in iMovie with pictures and videos from a vacation. When I was finished in iMovie, I exported the movie to iDVD.
In iDVD I made a menu for my DVD.
I used a Memorex DVD-R disc to burn my DVD on, but I now have a problem. The burned DVD will only play on computers (Macs and Windows), not on regular DVD players. When I try to play the DVD on a regular DVD player, the TV just displays an error message.
    Does somebody know what's wrong?

It sounds like a burn error-rate problem. Unfortunately, iDVD doesn't directly give you the option to burn a disc at a low burn rate to greatly reduce such errors.
What you must do is a two step process:
Step one. 'Burn' a disk image of the completed project to your hard drive - it's an option under FILE. After the disk image is complete, double-click on the disk image icon to mount it on your Desktop and use Apple's DVD Player application to view the image to make sure it plays correctly (File>Open DVD media).
Step two. Use Apple's Disk Utility application or Roxio's Toast Titanium to burn the disk image to writable media. Use a low burn rate - no higher than 4x, but I like to use 2x. See Burning a disk image file on a CD or DVD in Mac OS X at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93006
Also, Memorex may not be the best media choice. Verbatum seems to have a good reputation and I like Maxell.

  • IDVD plays on DVD player but doesn't open on PC

I created a DVD slide show using iDVD and included the image files.
After burning the DVD, it plays on DVD players and my Mac, but will not play or read on a PC.
Is there something I am missing? How do I burn the iDVD slide show that includes picture files, and opens on ANY DVD player, Mac, or PC ?!?

    You don't.
I have never seen a PC that came with decent DVD playback software (unlike your Mac which has a DVD player app included). In most cases, a PC will have "limited" DVD player app that needs upgrade for $$ in order to access different features. That would be my guess in this case since the disc works everywhere but a PC.

  • How do I play play a dvd from my mac and send to apple tv

Just got my Apple tv for my new Imac everything works fine. How do I play a dvd on my mac and send to apple tv

If you mean a commercial DVD you have bought, then you can't. They are usually copy protected and removing the protection is illegal in most countries, so we cannot help you do that.
If it is a personal DVD that you own the copyright on, then you can convert it to iPad format using Handbrake. Handbrake will not convert copy protected, commercial DVDs.

  • I can't play a DVD from my superdrive via my macbook pro to apple TV via airplay.

I can't play a DVD from my superdrive via my macbook pro to apple TV via airplay.  The movie plays fine on the macbook if I'm not trying to airplay.  The airplay works fine if I'm not trying to play a movie from the superdrive.  I think my apple TV is Gen 2.

If you get a checkerboard pattern it's because Apple block Airplay Mirroring of protected media.
    VLC Player may work.

I had formally use the Windows DVD Maker and the final file was UBF which seemed to work on all players and computers. My DVD Maker will not allow completion of Movie, it  notes, " I need the proper codes to make it work"??
I have looked on the Microsoft site for these support codes but cannot find them??? Windows Movie worked well on my Vista OS. What has MS done to screw up this software???

You need to read the owner's manual for your DVD player to find out exactly what video formats it will play.  Then you must ensure you record your video to DVD in a format that is recognized by your DVD player.  The Windows 7 Windows Movie Maker
may have a different default video format output that what you were using in Vista.  You have the option to specify the format of the video you record to DVD.

  • HP Pavilion dm4 - Windows 7, 64-bit. Error message: Windows Media Player won't play my DVD

Here is the actual error message. The video card has an updated driver. I can't figure out how to resolve this -
Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card.

    Hi,
First of all, if you've recently installed any virtual drive software ( an exmple of this is Daemon Tools ), temporarily uninstall it, restart the notebook and see if this has corrected the error.
If the above doesn't apply, try downloading and installing the free KLite codec pack on the following link.
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_klite_codec_pack/
When the installation has completed, restart the notebook and check again.
    Let me know.

  • My Mac has suddenly stopped playing my DVDs including a DVD it played fine only 3 days ago. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong and how I could fix it? Thank you.

My Mac has suddenly stopped playing my DVDs including a DVD it played fine only 3 days ago. I insert the DVD and wait for the player to start automatically but after 10 minutes, nothing is happening and it sounds like the disk has stopped spinning. I've now tried with four different DVDs (all store bought and so perfectly normal disks). The Mac doesn't eject the disk or anything it just doesn't seem to respond to it being there at all.
My main confusion is why this suddenly happened today when it was perfectly fine last week.
Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong and how I could fix it? Thank you.

  • DVD Drive will not recognize any movie DVD disk in the drive - thus will not play any dvd movies.

HP G71 449WV dvd drive will not recognize any dvd disc that has a movie on it. Will not play movies, keeps saying to insert disc when there is a disc in there.  It will recognize a dvd data disc or a blank dvd, it just will not recognize any dvd movies.  I've tried the microsoft fix it, downloaded new codecs, using different dvd playback software but none of that works since the drive will not recognize there is even a dvd movie in the drive.  Computer is out of warranty.

Hello crollinsphoto1, welcome to the HP Forums.
It appears that you're not able to play movie DVD's in the DVD player in your notebook. I will try to assist you with this.
I'd recommend starting with this document:
Resolving DVD and Blu-ray Movie Problems (Windows 7).
Also, are these purchased DVD's or burnt DVD's?
Do the movies play in other sources? (DVD player, other PC)
Let me know how this goes.
    Thanks.

  • I live in the UK but visit the US regularly. The price of a new MacBook Pro is much less in the US, and is where I plan to buy one. However, I have read that a US machine will not play UK DVD's. Is this true and if so is it possible to change the codes?

I live in the UK but visit the US regularly. I plan to buy a MacBookPro in the US but have read that it will not play UK DVD's. Is this so? If so, is it possible to change the codes?

All modern & new Macs can play both PAL and NTSC DVDs.  I do it all the time and it works perfectly.
The DVD drive is set to its first region code when you first play a DVD in it.  So when you buy a Mac, whatever type of DVD you play first will determine the initial region code that is set.   If it's a PAL/Region 2 DVD it will set the DVD drive to region 2.
The only thing you have to watch out for is if you have a collection of DVDs that have different region codes.  In those cases you may be faced with changing the region code in the DVD drive in order to play one or more of the DVDs; and as others have noted there is a limit to the number of times you can change the region code (most modern DVD drives allow up to 5 changes; the 5th change becomes the permanent change).  This is due to industry licensing practices.
If you have DVDs that are Region 0 or All Regions you don't have to worry about region codes.

  • DVD Player won't play some DVDs

My DVD Player won't play certain DVDs. Presumably all commercial DVDs should be playable in the software. Fox discs are a problem. I can get Player to turn on, but after the menu, the screen flashes a reading error, from which it could not recover. Yesterday I tried to play a Paramount disc, and nothing happened. The computer didn't even acknowledge that there was a disc in the tray. A Wolfe Video wouldn't read at first (I got a dialogue box that the disc was blank) but I put it in again and that time it played.
Also, on a side note, I would like future editions of DVD Player to add the feature of allowing the viewer the ability to go backwards a frame at a time, as well as forwards.

    Hi, Doug.
This is starting to sound like a different problem. Your original report seemed to apply only to specific DVDs. Now it's with all DVDs. Before we get into how to reinstall DVD player, let's try a few other things that are more likely troublemakers with DVD Player.
    1. As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
    2. Reset DVD Player. Peform all of the following steps before attempting to launch DVD Player again:2.1. Trash the com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist file in your Home > Library > Preferences folder. This file is the preferences file for DVD Player.
2.2. Using Get Info, make sure you are the Owner and have Access of Read & Write on the following folders on your account:• Home > Library > Application Support.
    • Home > Library > Application Support > DVD Player.
    • Home > Library > Application Support > DVD Player > Settings. If not, correct the permissions accordingly using the Owner and Access pop-up menus in the Details sub-panel of the Ownership & Permissions panel of the folders' Get Info windows.
2.3. Trash the contents of your Home > Library > Application Support > DVD Player > Settings folder.3. If none of the above sorts it out, let's see what Console can tell us: After the problem occurs, make note of the time, then immediately check the ends of these Console logs for clues that may have been logged when the problem occurred.
    4. Note that none of the above rules out the possibility that your optical drive has become defective.4.1. Can you burn DVDs, e.g. even data DVDs from Finder?
4.2. See if the freeware VLC Media Player (nee VideoLan Client) can play the DVDs.Good luck!

  • DVD Player does not play a DVD

My DVD player can play commercial DVD without any problem.
I use a DVD Video Recorder to burn a DVD. I finalised it confirmed it can be played in my Windows PC PowerDVD version 6 OEM edition.
When I put it in my PBG4 superdrive, the DVD Player could be launched automatically. However, it says "Supported Disc Not Available". Checked Disc Region is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and my Drive is in Region 3 with 4 changes left.
    Any idea?

If you burned a DVD-RW, the DVD Player might not recognize it. In this case, use a different brand of DVD-RW or a DVD-R disk.
