Playing rental movies freezes / crashes iTunes. Someone working on a fix?

.....or is this just a random error? Don't think so since there are a few more with the same problem.
I’ve been waiting for a solution to this problem since iTunes rental was started, but obviously there’s not enough “complaining“ about this error! Well here’s one more try! I hope a few more people start complaining so that this gets fixed.
When I try to play a rented movie I am asked the usual question about the 24 hour policy and as soon as I press OK, just when you think the movie will start playing, the screen turns black, or gray as described by others and our friendly beach ball appears. No sound, no picture, nothing! iTunes simply freezes forever until you force it to quit, or turn off the Mac.
After that the rented movie appears as it was never played in iTunes, the 24 hour runtime didn’t start counting, but the 30 day clock starts ticking.
There is of course one thing I observed, my MacBook gets extremely loud which would lead to increased processor activity, which I usually don’t experience except if I run many resourceful applications at once. As soon as I force iTunes to quit this is back to normal.
*Everything else, bought movies, TV shows, music, etc. works perfectly without any error or problem.*
Of course I got a refund from the iTunes store, but no indication why this problem occurred and most important how and when it will be solved.
This happened on a MacBook 2 GHz Intel Core Duo with Mac OS X 10.4.11 with updated software including iTunes 7.6 and Quicktime 7.4. But as far as I can see from other posts this is not limited to certain Hardware, because many different systems including Windows users have the same problem.
Things I have tried “inspired” by other forums:
*1. Updated and checked for new updates several times.*
*2. Completely removed Quicktime, downloaded and installed latest version from Apple.*
*3. Bought music to check if iTunes account has problems.*
*4. Different firewall settings, turned firewall off during play! Yes firewall is back on.*
*5. Monitored activity and firewall during play without any obvious problem.*
*6. Played movie with and without internet connection, cable and wifi.*
*7. Played movie with Quicktime, didn’t work error “authorization required”.*

I too downloaded the update to Quicktime, but it did not solve my problem. After much pulling out of the hair, I found a fix for myself. It may help someone else. This is what I had to do:
1. Make sure that movies are set to play in a seperate window (found in Edit/Preferences/Playback.
2. Open iTunes (DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PLAY THE MOVIE FROM iTUNES). Instead switch to the mini player mode (found under Advanced).
3. Open your movie folder where the rental is. The movie folder is usually found in My Documents/My Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Movies. Right click on the rented movie and select "Play". It will open in a regular window, but you should be able to click on the control for full screen at the bottom of the play control. I hope this helps someone else... I have tested it three times and it's worked every time.

  • Fix for rental movies freezing or locking up iTunes

Hi, I had this problem where rented movies would freeze or lock up my iTunes and I'd have to kill it with Task Manager. I rented 2 movies and had the problem with both. I had apple let me re-download the 2 movies after my rental period finished so that I could trouble shoot the problem more.
Apple care pointed me to this url: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1421?viewlocale=en_US
So I created a new xp username and re-downloaded one of the movies in that iTunes. WOrks no problem!!
SO in the original xp username that's broken I completey removed these 2 folders: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes and
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes and now the original login works too!!
Hope this will be helpful to people out there.

I found this in an older post, although I didn't hear anything from support.
+I have heard from tech support from Apple. This is a defect in iTunes. There is nothing you (we) can do to fix it. We will have to wait for iTunes to release a fix. In the meantime, to get a refund, when you get your invoice from Apple for the rental, simply click on the "report a problem" link in the email and follow all instructions. Your money will be refunded. FYI this problem is occurring on Mac as well as Windows.+
*If this is true I really hope this issue is fixed before the release of iTunes 7.7!*

  • Saved movie trailers crash iTunes 11.1.1.11

iTunes 11.1.1.11 on my ThinkPad X230 with Win7 64bit crashes. I can click and watch a movie trailer in iTunes fine, but the same trailer downloaded and saved will crash iTunes if I click on the saved trailer. If I try to just play the saved trailer with QuickTime Pro 7.7.4, it opens QT and starts playing without crashing QT, but also without a picture or sound.
I have followed many instruction on the Apple Support Forums, made sure that all my ThinkPad software/drivers are up-to-date, and the same for Win7, I uninstalled iTunes and all of its components as per the support instructions and did a clean install of iTunes 11.1.1.11 and QuickTime 7.7.4.
What gives? What am I overlooking? Everything else in my iTunes seems to be working fine.
Does anyone know about the MSVCR80.dll problem and how to fix it?
    Here is the crash report:
    Problem signature:
      Problem Event Name:    APPCRASH

    Hi Brenden,
Thank you for your reply and the suggested article. Unfortunately I still haven't been able to solve the problem.
Here is where I stand now: I have followed every possible lead and Apple Support instruction I could find-- all software is current and up to date, as are my drivers, I followed uninstall and reinstall instructions to make sure everything is clean and functioning.
Everything works fine on my computer and my iTunes except some .mov files crash iTunes.
A downloaded and saved iTunes movie trailer (720p and .mov file) crashes iTunes (as documented in my previous post). If I try to just play the saved trailer with QuickTime Pro 7.7.4, it opens QT and starts playing without crashing QT, but also without a picture or sound.
My question is: why does iTunes play the trailer fine but the same trailer downloaded and saved crashes it when I try to watch it? If I open iTunes in Safe Mode, it doesn't crash iTunes but there is also no sound or picture.
I have other .mov files on my computer that play fine in QuickTime and iTunes, while others play fine in QuickTime but crash iTunes. All my mpeg-4 files play fine in iTunes and QuickTime.
I have now spent so much time trying to solve this problem that it really bugs me .
I'd appreciate all help in finding a true fix. Searching the various forums for the different platforms revealed that other users have the same problem (for example msultan22071: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5292773?start=0&tstart=0).
    Thank you!

  • I cant play any movie on my itunes 10.5.2.11 for windows

i cant play any movie on my itunes 10.5.2.11 for windows even the .mov files ?? i cant also drag any videos to the liberary .. just music ..whats wrong??

The supported formats are listed on Apple's iPad webpage -> http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/
Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format
So, it would have to be in one of those formats. It can be a little confusing because the extension doesn't always tell you the codec that the video inside that file needs. You'll probably have to transcode the video with some other application or recreate it yourself.

  • I just downloaded two rental movies from the iTunes store, proceeded to sync them to my iPad, and now I can't find where they landed. Anybody know where to access rental movies on the iPad? thanks

i just downloaded two rental movies from the iTunes store, proceeded to sync them to my iPad, and now I can't find where they landed. Anybody know where to access rental movies on the iPad? thanks

And just in case .... You don't actually sync rental movies to the iPad....
To transfer a rented movie from iTunes, use the movies pane in iTunes. Rented movies transfer is at the top. You must have an Internet connection to transfer a rented movie. Select the "move" arrow in the direction you wish to transfer, and click the apply button at the bottom right. Rented movies can only exist on one device at a time, they do not sync like other video, but move from iTunes to the iPad.

  • Trouble with Playing Rental Movies from iTunes

I rented a movie on iTunes (on my apple TV). It started to play after about 5 minutes, no problem. Then after about 50 minutes, I went into Menu, by mistake while trying to pause the movie.... That's it.... cant get back to the movie afer that.
The movie was no where to be found. When i searched again and found the movie, it allowed me to rent it again - on selecting play option, it said movie already rented but not download and to 'download' it go into Menu>iTunes Store>Check for Rentals.
I do that and it just seems to go on endlesslu without anything happening.
Why cant i just play the movie again?
    Any suggestions please

    This got sorted out.
I chose a diffent itunes store.
then came back to the original store and i can view the rental movies

  • ITunes 8 not playing rented movies, freezing

I bought 4 rental movies on the ITMS last night, after having downloaded they will not play, at all, all that happens is itunes 8 seizes up and I have to kill it manually, I have tried everything I can think of or have read in the forums and FAQ's, including reinstalling windows and iTunes/Quicktime. Everything else plays fine, video podcasts, purchased movies, all my music, ect. I was able to copy one of the movies to my iPod Touch and it played fine on there.
    SO.
Is there a way I can fix this?

We are having the exact same symptoms. First I found out that our Gen 5 IPod won't play the video( it's not a bug it's a feature).
Then the video won't play. Some times I get about 1/2 sec worth of sound, but most time ITunes just stops responding. It is using no CPU but is locked up tight. The only way to stop it is to end task. I have ITunes ver 8.0.2.20. win XP PRO SP 2.

  • My Apple TV is not authorize to play rentals movies

I rented a movie and when I try to play it on my apple TV 2 generation it shows the following mesage "your apple tv is not authorize to play this content". I try desathorizing it and authorizing it again but nothing happent. I have 3 new retals movies on my itunes but I can't see any of them, but I can see without problem all the movies I buy. I dont know what to do, so please help me with this problem!

    This worked for me:-
    Unauthorise & then authorise itunes.
On Apple TV (gen 2) restore original settings
On original computer reset file sharing
& possibly reboot router (though it worked for me without this)
Don't know why I had the same problem as you as I'd been watching from Apple TV successfully before. However I'd recently updated itunes & also installed a new Epson wireless printer- though I can't think why the later would effect anything but it could all be a coincidence

  • Playing rental movies with front row

Is there any way that they can upgrade front row so that i can watch rented movies through it? I'm a very lazy person and i want to watch my rented movies from my bed without moving. I can use the remote to watch most things but it won't let me play rented movies with it.

Unfortunately, rental movies do not appear in Front Row. I believe this is because of the inability of Front Row to alert you (and have you click "okay") to the rental agreement requirements. It may also be because Front Row does not give iTunes feedback about when you started playing the movie and/or when you're done. If you would like to see rental movies in iTunes, as do quite a few people who post in this forum, I would suggest you send Apple some Mac OS X feedback (since there's no form specifically for Front Row):

  • Error message -42110 when playing rental movie

I've just downloaded Tintin from the rental section on iTunes. When I try and play it I get the error message -42110. When I access my account on iTunes it says that I still have 1 purchase to download. I went through the download process for a 2nd time and again when I try and play the movie I get an -42110 error message. I have the latest version of iTunes and I'm running Mac OS 10.7.3. Can anyone help? I've e-mailed Apple and I'm waiting to hear back.

  • I cannot play rental movie on Apple TV.

I tried to get a rental movie on Apple TV but I cannot watch it. I let the movie to finish downloading in order to watch later but it's never worked. It always showed "ready to play in 4 hours", even though, it was downloaded over 50% of the movie already. It's been several times until I really gave up. Finally, I cannot watch it and they deducted money from my credit card for this movie.
Never again rental movie on Apple TV!!!

    Noonalways,
Most likely youi have a slow internet connection or have limits on your usage.
Apple TV calculates the time nneded to finish the doanload so you can comfortably watch the whole move without waiting for the rest of the download half way down the plot.
I understand the frustration but it is not Apple TV you have the real problem with.
If you go wor HD quality you can try to download standard and see if this goes faster.
