Playing video through frontrow onto HDTV

I am wondering if I use frontrow to play a video, and I connect my computer to my HDTV with an HDMI cable, will it play show the same quality over the HDTV or can I expect some loss in quality? If there is loss, is there some better way to play videos over the tv?

TV screens, even HDTVs, don't always make the best computer displays. How big is your HDTV? Your MacBook's screen is 1280 x 800 in a 13" (diagonal) screen. This means you have approximately 100 pixels per inch. If your HDTV is running at full 1920 x 1080 (there are other resolutions for "HDTV") but it's 52" (diagonal) then you're only getting about 60 pixels per inch. The pixels themselves will be larger giving you a less crisp display.
Also, exactly what kinds of videos are you going to display? Purchased videos from iTunes? A DVD movie? An HD movie trailer from the QuickTime web site? A Blue-Ray movie? Higher resolution videos will give you a different experience. But the MacBook won't lower the quality of the original video you're playing to get it to display on an HDTV.
Personally, my iMac is connected to my HDTV and I use it as a DVR with my EyeTV Hybrid to get over-the-air HDTV. It's also used as my DVD player as it's also connected to my stereo for surround sound. I also download my purchased iTunes videos to that computer (the music is duplicated on both the MacBook and iMac, though). All three options look fantastic on my HDTV. I couldn't be happier with the quality. I don't do a whole lot of Front Row on the iMac since it only displays on the iMac's built-in screen unless you "mirror" the two displays and that doesn't always work correctly. But, with a MacBook, you could attach the computer to the HDTV, close the MacBook's screen and use the HDTV at full resolution as the only display. (You can wake the MacBook with the remote after closing it.) Your exact experience will depend on the TV and the types of videos you're playing.

  • Updated my mac to mountain lion 10.8.3 and now my app store, mail or facetime won't open. Also, I am not longer able to play videos through firefox. I tried downloading the combo for mountain lion and it refuses to install? Can anyone help me?

updated my mac to mountain lion 10.7.8.3 and now my app store, mail or facetime won't open. Also, I am not longer able to play videos through firefox. I tried downloading the combo for mountain lion and it refuses to install saying that I need to see developer. Whenever I try to open my appstore, mail or facetime it says that the programmes need to be installed and might not be compatible with this version of mac operating system. Can anyone help me?

It's not a bad install of Mountain Lion. I've had the same thing happen to me, but it affected not only Mail, but a variety of other programs including iPhoto and MS Office, where I had to delete preferences, caches, and reinstall the OS as well as the program itself. I'm still having issues with Mail, so I've gone to another program.
Everything was fine upon the initial install. I restarted my iMac about two weeks after the install, and that's when the issues began to happen. I've reinstalled Mountain Lion twice, but the same issues arise.
As I mentioned above, you'll need to figure out which preferences are causing the issue, then reinstall the program, as a fresh reinstallation will do you no good unless you wipe the drive completely.
Here's a thread that helped me with iPhoto:

  • Ipod freezes when playing video through dock

Okay, this is a challenging one. I will be surprised if someone can help me figure this one out, but I will be very grateful!!
Picked up a brand new 60gb 5th generation video ipod the other day. 1.1 update already installed. Everything worked great. Was able to play videos through the AV dock, no problem, and was able to hook it up to the JBL stereo for the ipod, no problem.
Here is where it gets interesting. I took an avi video from my digital camera, and used Quicktime Pro to convert it into a .mov Apple Quicktime movie. I am using Windows XP. I then imported that .mov movie into itunes. Then I right clicked on the file and told itunes to convert it into the ipod format. I then hooked the ipod up to the computer, and the video was transferred to the ipod with no problems.
Then I was able to play the video with no problem on the ipod screen (not hooked up to the AV dock). Then I inserted the ipod into the AV dock that is hooked up to my tv. I played videos this way without a problem, before I loaded this new home made video. When I played the new video, I answered Yes to Tv Out, and right after that point my ipod froze up. No video played at all. Then I had to reset my ipod.
I tried this again several times, with the same result. This was now happening with regular videos that I downloaded from itunes. Also now, when I hooked the ipod up to the JBL stereo, and just tried to play a song, the ipod would freeze up. However, songs and videos play fine when the ipod is not hooked up to a dock.
It seems to me like my home made video somehow corrupted the software drivers for the port on the ipod.
Then to fix the problem, I finally had to do the dreaded RESTORE. I could not update the ipod, because I was already at version 1.1. I tried rolling back to an earlier version, but the updater told me that the update was not compatible with my ipod.
The RESTORE did fix the problem. The ipod was completely back to normal. I could hook it up to the JBL and the AV dock with no problems. Until...yes, I tried playing the home made video again. I just wanted to see if it was a fluke. Same problem came back....arrghhh!
He is another weird observation. I can start the video playing on the ipod, without it hooked up to the dock, and answer Yes to tv out. The video starts playing, then I can insert the ipod into the dock, while it is still playing, and the video plays fine on the tv, through the dock! Until the video finishes. Once the video finishes, the ipod freezes up again.
I wonder if this is a hardware problem, and I should just return my ipod. It seems like a software problem to me. I think if it is my home made video that is corrupting my ipod, I think itunes should be smart enough to not copy something to my ipod that is going to corrupt it.
Ha..ha...wow, sorry that was very long-winded. Anyone have any suggestions?
Dell Dimension 2.8ghz P4   Windows XP   2.25GB of RAM

All I can suggest is to re-encode the video as m4v with QT Pro, there might've been a problem in encoding. Also, try sending this same video (setting TV Out to Yes) with the iPod not plugged into the dock and with an Apple RCA cable, if you have one, hooked up to a TV. If that works, the dock connector might be damaged (unlikely) but it's possible. So once you've re-encoded, see if the dock situation works then. Good luck.

  • Playing videos through an xbox 360 or a tv?

Is there a way to play videos through an xbox 360? I know you can play music through it but I just wanted to know if there is a way to play videos also.
also, is there a way to play my iPod through my tv?
    Thanks,
    Sam

I am not too sure about an XBox 360.
Although you can play it through your TV, provided that you have the right cables needed.
    Apple Store: iPod AV Cable
If you have this cable then on your iPod under Video Settings select Tv"Off" and change it to TV"On" this will output the single to your TV.

  • Can't Play Video Through To Camera iMovie Crashes

I was working with iMovie 3 the other day and viewing the project on my TV using my trusty old Canopus ADVC 100 with the "Play Video Through To Camera" option checked in Preferences. Today I went to preview a new project and iMovie crashes everytime it finishes loading all of the clips with the play through option checked. The only way to open the project is to turn off the ADVC and uncheck the play-though option and re-save. It will load whether the ADVC is on or off as long as the play through option is not checked.
    What could have changed?

    Hi David
This is a guessing question - so many ways things can go wrong.
May be You find some help in my list:
    Mac:
    - hardware
◊ Slow hard disk (fragmented: repair permissions, repair hard disk, use a faster hard disk)
◊ I wonder how full your Mac's hard disc is. (David Babsky) A near full hard disk prevents Import/Capture. 10% free is recommended + space for Import/Capture + work space (about 4 to
5 times the amount needed for Capture) eg on a 200Gb hard disk You need 20Gb + (one hour tape)
    13Gb + 50Gb = about 80 to 90Gb free space.
◊ Disconnect all other ext devices (FW and USB) exept Camera (and keyboard + mouse) and try again
    ◊ Reset PRAM
    ◊ Bad RAM-chips
◊ disconnect Mac from powerline (not just switch off, really plug out) for a few minutes to reset FW ports
    - software
◊ File-Vault is on - turn it off
◊ Something is occupying the CPU/System, like other programs, Internet etc.
◊ Do You have desktop pictures or screen or energy-savers active? Try turning them off.
◊ Updating - OS has to be a clean install - not an update eg from X.3.x to X.4.x (no good) OS X.4.0-5 needs a clean install to work (I use X.3.9)
◊ Updating QT and/or other updates (to 7 needs v6 to be cleaned out first) QT v.7.0.0-4 needs a clean install to work (I use 6.5.2)
◊ Have you tried the crazy fix: Open GarageBand, play a few notes, close it and reopen iMovie. The camera should import fine now. Sue/SDillini
◊ Running iDVD at the same time as iMovie can cause problems: (Lennart Thelander)
◊ If You also have installed FinalCut Express/pro there are possibly problems with this
    iMovie:
◊ remove bookmarks in iMovie project
    ◊ Trash: com.apple.iMovie.plist and com.apple.iMovie3.plist : files (Xinram)
    Connection:
◊ don’t Daisy chain Camcorder <--> external hard disk <--> Mac
◊ FW-wire cable, is it OK?
    ◊ USB/USB2 is NO GO !
◊ Cheque FW connection at Camera end. OK? (Adam Smith1)
◊ Cheque FW connection at Mac end. OK?
    Camera:
◊ The Camera is set to VTR ? (not as when You ”film” record with it)
◊ You may be need to go to the Camera menu and select digital out.
◊ defective camera TRY IT ON ANOTHER MAC ! (if the A/D chip in the camera is harmed then it will say in iMovie that the camera is connected and You can forward resp. backward the tape but there will be no picture or sound just the blue screen).
◊ connect camera to power-line, not battery-only....(Karsten Schlüter)
◊ Canons don't allow daisychaining on firewire, make it "only device" on port (Karsten Schlüter)
◊ Cheque the menu on Your Camera so that it communicates with the FW digitally to Your Mac
◊ Date and Time is correct on Your Camera ?
    Tape:
◊ Drop outs on the miniDV-tape - make a camera to camera copy on a tape which You have previous recorded with a time code (dummy recording).
◊ Break in the time-code on the miniDV tape (make a camera to camera copy on a tape which is pre-recorded with nothing/anything so that the tape has a time-code from beginning to the end)
◊ If You recorded in LP-mode (90 min on a standard 60 min tape with 12-bit sound). Try to change in iMovie pref. to import but not as individual clips. If this doesn’t work You have to make a Camera to Camera copy with the receiving Camera set to SP-mode and 16-bit sound.
    More:
    ◊ follow advises here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=43000
◊ follow Grandmaster Dan's advice for Sony cameras here: http://www.danslagle.com/mac/iMovie/usage/5020.shtml
    NEWS: Jerry Harris writes:
I know that in a lot of the new Sony HD cameras, iMovie requires that you turn iLink Conv off. I would look for a similar setting for your camera. This setting has to do with shooting a movie in one format, and using the camera to import as a different format. For instance, if you shoot HD footage and have iLink conv on - the camera will send DV to the computer etc...
So, case in point: look for a setting on your camera that has to do with the video format and see if that helps.

  • Hi, my brand new iphone 4 will not play music through my music app but it will play videos through youtube and will play the sounds throught my games and will play text tones and facetime ect. what is wrong?

hi, my brand new iphone 4 will not play music through my music app but it will play videos through youtube and will play the sounds throught my games and will play text tones and facetime ect. what is wrong?

At least I'm not the only one with the issue. I was looking it up so see if others had the same problem and found a bunch of posts about it. I'm assuming it's not the phone then, it's the software. Should I bring it to the Apple Store? Replacing the phone seems stupid, because the phone isn't really the problem. It's the software! Maybe the iOS 5.0.2 will fix it???  I don't really want to wait though, it's a pain. If a lot of people have this issue it should get Apple's attention. They need to do something to fix it, ASAP!

  • Is there a way to play video through HDMI and have the audio via the headphone socket?

I would like to be able to play movies through the HDMI adapter to a projector, but to have the audio via the headphone socket to a separate audio system.  What I find is that as soon as I connect the projector via HDMI, the audio via the headphone sockeet is cut off.  Any ideas?

Yes, there is a very simple way to get audio out through the iPad headphone jack even while connected to HDMI to play movies on a projector or TV.  In fact, I just did it last night for a presentation.
With the HDMI adapter connected to the projector and your audio jack plugged into your iPad headphone jack, go ahead and start the movie. Then simply unplug the headphone jack and plug it back in.  The audio is now routed through the headphone jack again.
I found I only had to do this once per session.  That is, Iwas able to stop the movie, go to the beginning of my presentation, wait the 20 minutes for the meeting to begin, and when I got to the video clip the audio still played out through the headphone jack to the PA system.
I had built a presentation in a Web oriented training tool and it was running on Safari iOS7 with the latest update.  I have not tried it with Keynote yet.

  • Issues playing video through USB on 58M9363D 4k TV

    Hi there,
I recently purchased the 4k 58M9363D and I am loving it so far. However I do have some serious issues with playing video from both USB and through my pc. They do ruin the experience at the moment and hopefully they can be fixed. So here goes!
Whenever I try to play a mp4 file through USB it says format is not supported, this is especially painful when all 4k content I could find seems to be in the mp4 format.
Another issue I get is with playing 3D movies from usb.
Sometimes they play perfectly fine but often I get strange long lines at the bottom of the screen, making is unwatchable.
It doesn't seem to be a format issue as I tried mostly mkv files that work half the time and the other half I get the same distorted screen.
Lastly, I can't seem to play 3D movies from my pc.
When I turn on a SBS video and press the 3d button on the remote I just get a double SBS screen that looks converted from 2D to 3D, instead of them merging into a single actual 3D image.
Can anyone tell me how to fix these issues?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi
    Regarding the USB playback:
In Toshiba M8365 user manual (page 94/95) you can find the details about the supported media format, video codec, file extension, etc
    http://www.toshiba-om.net/LCD/PDF/English/M8365-405058-English.pdf
The MP4 media format is definitely supported.
The following video codecs in connection with mp4 file format should be used: H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC) or MPEG-4 part12,14
Regarding the 3D support (over HDMI):
Take a look on page 96. There you can find info about the supported 3D resolution, aspect ratio and 3D structure (Side by Side (Half), Side by Side (Full), Top and Bottom)
The possible 3D structure depends on the movie resolution.

  • Update: Can play videos through JMStudio but not from API

Here's an update/fix if anyone is reading this at all (since I got absolutely NO response and was ready to toss JMF for good)
Installing Windows Media Player seems to have fixed my problem. I still don't understand why since I could play videos in JMStudio before I installed WMP.

If you don't have a problem with using VLC, you can set it up to serve over a UDP port. On your video server run
    vlc --sout udp:192.168.<machinewith.videoplayer>
you can pick videos from within vlc i think. if you wanna run it from the command line (your server has no X or you wanna run it from your remote machine through ssh with no -X) add
    -I curses
as an option, or just list the video files or playlist in the command line.
To open your stream on the other box, run
    vlc udp:192.168.<video.server>
See if that suits your needs.
EDIT: You might also have some luck mounting the remote drive with sshfs.

  • Cant play video through powerpoint on macbookair

    Hi there,
I have just purchased a fancy new macbook air (changed from macbook pro for my 'on the road' solution). Operation iMac as desktop.
I deliver workhops and presentation to clients through powerpoint and for some reason, I cannot embed mpg or video files into Powerpoint PLUS if I play the video seprate through quicktime, the video shows on my notebook but does not project on the screen via the VGA connection?
Is there a plug in that I am missing or can download so that it embeds into PPT AND more importantly shows on the projector screen using the VGA connector cable?
    Please advise
    Thanks
    Gwendy

Assuming your TV has HDMI input, you'll need a MiniDisplay Port to HDMI adapter and a HDMI cable.
The MiniDisplay Port adapter plugs into the Thunderbolt port.
This can also be done with DVI, VGA as well.
Here's the adapter, note that your Air supports sound through the HDMI so you need an adapter that supports it also.

  • How To Get Sound To Play Out From MBP Onto HDTV?

I hooked up my MBP to my HDTV last night using the DVI - HDMI cable and had no issues with picture.
This is the model of HDTV I have: http://www.hitachidigitalmedia.com/product_techspec.do?pt=17&pg=69&proid=593
I then connected plugged in a phono L+R to 3.5mm Jack Audio Cable from the headphone port on my Mac to the PC Audio Input on the TV. Nada sound.
Then tried connecting to the Audio Input points on the TV. Still nothing.
The only Audio sockets my HDTV has are:
    Audio Input •
    PC Audio Input •
    Audio Line Out •
    Headphone Socket •
    Component Audio
so don't think I can use TOSLINK either.
Can anyone help? Spent last night with picture off the HDTV but sound off a set of external Creative speakers hooked up to the MBP.
    Thank You,
    Arivind Abraham

I think that the audio cable from the MBP to the audio inputs on the TV would have worked if you had gone to System Preferences -> Sound -> Output and assigned the output there. YMMV
