Playing wmv files

Is there a better program for playing wmv videos on web pages then flip4mac. I'm using Firefox 3 and flip4mac is really bad at displaying the video correctly.

I downloaded Microsoft's Media Player from here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/mac/mp9/default.aspx
For some reason that won't install. When I click on the windowsmediainstaller.bin it tries to unzip it but I get an error saying that it's unable to expand windowsmedia.sitx, stuffit archives are not supported.

Have you done the obvious things to try to fix it: quit Quicktime then start it back up again, log out then back in, reboot.
Edit: Just read one of your later posts. If VLC won't play it, this is unrelated to Quicktime and Flip4Mac. Are you sure these wmv files are okay?

  • HT3775 can't play wmv file on quicktime?

I can't play .wmv files on quicktime.  I installed both QuickTime MPEG2 and Flip4Mac WMV hoping that this would solve the problem but it did not.  When trying to play any audio .wmv file I get an error box stating "the document (filename).wmv could not be opened.  The movie is not in a format the QuickTime Player understands.  You may need to install additional software to open this type of file".  Anyone know what I might need here?

Hmm, Perian should provide flv playback in Quicktime. Maybe you need to update Perian? I used to always use Perian but since upgrading to Lion I have not installed it and now rely on VLC for non-apple standard media playback. Deluxe can handle the flv-format.It will convert flv to mov. Hope it helps

  • Playing wmv files in Quicktime Pro

I really want to play wmv files in quicktime. I read that quicktime pro should be able to do so. I have quicktime pro but nether Quicktime Player X or Quicktime 7 Pro can open it, and I know the file isn't corrupted cause it plays on a windows computer. Please help

You need to install Flip4Mac to play unprotected WMV files. WMV content which contains DRM can't be played in Mac OS X.

This is INCORRECT. Most encoders can be set to keep the resolution and quality of the source video. The only limitation is what the Phones support. If you have a DVD video it can't play because DVD resolution is not supported by the devices.
    N93, N93i, N95 supports up to VGA in MPEG4, QVGA in h264 (MPEG4 AVC)
N92 supports up to VGA in MPEG4
Most other Nseries support QVGA MPEG4 and may support also QVGA h264.

  • Playing .wmv files on orig iPad

How can i play  .wmv files on my orig iPad?  Looks like video files with .wmv file types change to QuickTime, but, will not then open and play. Is there a work-around for this?  Thanks.

.WMV's are not natively supported, as they are a proprietary Microsoft format.
You will need to download a video player that supports them.
I like avplayerhd, but you can search the app store.

  • Cannot play wmv files on BB 8520

When I try and play wmv files on my blackberry curve 8520 it plays the sound but not the video clip. I have removed the battery and replaced it but still does not work. It says that wmv is supported. Anyone got any ideas. Thanks in advance

Hi marcrees and welcome to the forums!
How are you transferring the media files between the PC and the Blackberry?
Are you using Media Manager, MediaSync, or my personal favorite "drag and drop" via MyComputer.
Do you have a media card or are you using device memory?
Also please tell us what version of device OS your are currently running on your 8520.
    Click options>scroll to About> it's listed in format: v.X.X.XXX.
You can also open a new message in the message queue and in the body of the message
type myver and press enter. You will get the model number and the device OS level.
    Thanks,

  • Play WMV Files in Quicktime

    Hi,
I run Win XP & Surfari. I am trying to get away from running Media Player. I wish to play WMV files in Quicktime players. I do not wish to use a 3rd party player I just want to be able to open the WMV & it runs in Quicktime. I do not not want to go through the hassle of using another program to convert the file I just want to be able to run it in Quicktime. Is this now possible? I have read other posts in the Forum and nobody has answered this question directly they just say convert..... & that is a stupid answer & not satisfactory
    Many thanks in advance
    PS

Again, QuickTime for windows can't play .wmv or.wma, in this link look to the column on the right, Supported File Formats.

  • Unable to Play wmv files om Macbook pro

How can I play wmv files on my MacBook pro?  I always could play them but recently unable to.  I get the message that Flip4Mac must be updated.  I try to update but it says it is already updated.  Also tried updating Quick player and gert the same reply.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm getting error too (Error #2044: Unhandled NetStatusEvent:. level=error, code=NetStream.Play.StreamNotFound). I'm getting this with CS5. This file was previously made in CS4 and never got this error.
Everything (fla and flv too) is on external hard disk.
As this work requires to be exported to mov, I've found out that everything needs to be on the mac (don't know for pc), like on desktop.
So, let me wrap up disadvantages I got with Flash CS5:
    - TextField.embedFont makes the font disappear in CS5, so I can't use it, so I can't "play" with text in a comfortable way (in CS4, with embedFont = true, I was able to rotate and stuff). Now I have to make a bitmap out of it. It means 3 lines of code and a new variable, instead of just an easy one.
    - I have to rebuild my entire source path structure for AS classes, as my old one (that took me years of effort to be reasonable and used to work just fine in CS4).
    - I have to move stuff from my hard drive to the desktop, to make flv be played and to make a mov out of my animation.
CS5 is making my job harder and making me lose a lot of time to find out errors that have no good reason to exist (it was not error. just "place CS5 doesn't like").

  • Unable to play wmv files in my nokia X6

I was previously able to play wmv files on my nokia x6 initially. I believe that after upgrading my firmware, I am now not able to play WMV files. Whenever i try it gives error as " unable to play media clip"
I have tried to format the phone to factory default but the problem still persist.

What version of Authorware are you using?
Assuming Authorware 7, linking to a .wmv should require the
    movie icon
to use the Windows Media Player control, which should allow
    the .wmv to
play as it does on your desktop. If this isn't happening,
    perhaps try
renaming the extension to .wmp and re'import' into
    Authorware? Maybe
that will force the WMP engine to start.
There's a sample on using the WMP ActiveX control here:
    http://www.awaretips.net
which is a little dated, but may be worth downloading and
    trying with
your movie just to see if that approach works.

  • Why won't Quicktime 7.4.1 play .wmv files when Windows Media Player will?

I am running OS 10.4.11 on a Power Mac G4 Quicksilver 2002. When I try to play .wmv files, the following message appears: "The movie could not be opened. The file is not a movie file." However, I can play such files using Windows Media Player. I have installed Quicktime 7.4.1. That hasn't helped.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I already had Flip4Mac installed. However, I re-installed it, but I get the same disappointing message when I try to open .wmv files from Flip4Mac's "Quicktime Player." Perian doesn't work either. At http://lifehacker.com/software/quicktime/download-of-the-day-perian-mac-204423.p hp I read the following: Perian is a freeware plug-in designed to enable the playback of almost every popular video codec in Quicktime.
In fact, pretty much the only major codec not supported by Perian is Windows Media Video files (WMV), but previously-mentioned Flip4Mac should take care of your WMV needs.
I'd appreciate additional comments and suggestions.
