Playing wmv on macbook

I am trying to play movies that were saved as wmv and I can't play them with Quicktime player on my macbook.
Does anybody have any recommendations please.
I used to be able to play them on my e-mac and i was sure it was with Quicktime. Now I get a message saying "error opening movie, The movie could not be opened"
This is so frustrating as I need to see these movies for school.

I'm getting error too (Error #2044: Unhandled NetStatusEvent:. level=error, code=NetStream.Play.StreamNotFound). I'm getting this with CS5. This file was previously made in CS4 and never got this error.
Everything (fla and flv too) is on external hard disk.
As this work requires to be exported to mov, I've found out that everything needs to be on the mac (don't know for pc), like on desktop.
So, let me wrap up disadvantages I got with Flash CS5:
- TextField.embedFont makes the font disappear in CS5, so I can't use it, so I can't "play" with text in a comfortable way (in CS4, with embedFont = true, I was able to rotate and stuff). Now I have to make a bitmap out of it. It means 3 lines of code and a new variable, instead of just an easy one.
- I have to rebuild my entire source path structure for AS classes, as my old one (that took me years of effort to be reasonable and used to work just fine in CS4).
- I have to move stuff from my hard drive to the desktop, to make flv be played and to make a mov out of my animation.
CS5 is making my job harder and making me lose a lot of time to find out errors that have no good reason to exist (it was not error. just "place CS5 doesn't like").

Can Apple TV play wmv, ppt or view Photoshop Bridge slideshows?

I am considering purchasing Apple TV. I am hoping that I can replace the HDMI cable from my MacBook Pro to my HD TV with the Apple TV setup. Now I view wmv and ppt files playing on my MacBook on my HD TV and Adobe Bridge slideshows. That is in addition to NetFlix and movies.
My motivation to purchase Apple TV is to view MLB.com games on my HD TV which I can not reliably do when I choose the fill screen option in the MLB media player. If I do so do I would like to not have to use my present HDMI cable any longer.

What kind of video? There are dozens of formats, some don't play on a Mac unless you have the right plug-ins for Quicktime. There are some things you should download to help you out.

These should cover EVERYTHING you'd ever encounter (though maybe not). Frankly, if it's not H.264 or w4v (or both), it doesn't belong on your mac.

Quicktime won't play .wmv

I have a new macbook pro with leopard and I downloaded flip4mac which was supposed to allow me to play .wmv files with quicktime but when doing so I'm told this isn't a movie file and it won't open.
The free quicktime I had with my pc had a preferences option that would allow almost any video file type to open, but I don't understand why the mac version of quicktime doesn't have this feature and is much more limited.

Fortunately, all the necessary software for viewing various formats of video, are free. Here's the list, as I know it. Doesn't really take much to get everything working, but because of the many different forms out there, it is necessary to do something to get it all to work.
For WMV, as already mentioned in the other post, Flip4Mac is essential.
VLC for .avi and some other formats.
Real Player
Perian
Adobe Flash
Streamclip
Various settings to make:
In Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them).

Quicktime X Player doesn't play wmv files correctly!

I have a brand spanking new MacBook Pro 13" with Snow Leopard installed. When I play WMV files with Flip4Mac installed, I'm unable to use the scrubber to move to different parts of the movie being played. I have to wait for it to cache (basically play back) before I can skip around in the movie.
Funny thing is that my previous machine was a Macbook v. 1.1 and I upgraded it to Snow Leopard from Leopard with WMC. QT Player worked with WMV files just fine. What gives?

*For those of us w/ a different version of QT you won't need to specifically select QT 10, just hit the "plus" then browse to your applications folder and select whichever version of QT you have and this fix works. You don't need to have QT 10. (For those of us not blessed to be in Leopard yet.) I have QT 7.6.4 Pro and it works fine. Brings back the quick little "import" bar we love so much when opening WMV files. Turns out there was a purpose for it after all! Unless QT is told to import all media prior to opening the file, it imports as it plays causing the afore mentioned issue.

Welcome to the Support Communities! Here are some steps you can try if you keep getting asked to authorize your MacBook for iTunes:

Although vlc mentioned above is a much more powerful and better player you could try installing Perian if you insist on using the quicktime player. It may supply the codec it needs.
Not sure why you wouldn't be able to play straight avi files though in quicktime.

If you are trying to play these on quicktime then what video format are those videos?
Wmp's? You need to install Flip4Mac.
Most other formats? Install Perian.
Or just use vlc instead. It's a much better, more powerful, and more general video player.

First check System Preferences/Sound - check all the settings to make sure mute is not selected.

Cannot play .wmv format files

Posted problem a while ago with a number of suggestions for which I was thankful BUT nothing seemed to help. I finally gave up in frustration thinking
that since most of the files were coming from Acquisition that they might be
corrupted. However so many bad files didn't make sense.
I've had friends on PCs send me .wmv files and the same error message occurs.
I have VLC Player, MPlayer and RealPlayer and none of them work for .wmv files.
ORIGINAL TOPIC: when I drag an ..wmv file into the windows media player
icon, the window will open up BUT then an error message will appear
"Cannot open the file. Verify that the path and filename are correct and try again."
How do I fix that so that I can play .wmv files?

There are codecs in the Windows version of Windows Media Player which do not exist on a Mac, so perhaps that's the issue.
But you say you tried VLC Player and MPlayer, but not that you've tried the Mac version of WMP, so if you haven't, give that a try. If that doesn't work, one last thing to try would be WMV Player. It's not free, but they have a free trial so you could see if it worked for you.
If none of those solutions help, then I can only guess that the files are encoded in a codec for which no Mac version exists. When you get stuff from Acquisition or any other P2P network, there's no knowing what sort of hash you'll end up with.
Don't Steal Intellectual Property! Please make sure that all material (songs, movies, etc.) you obtain from P2P networks are legal, not pirated.
