Playlist Folders?

I'm thinking about adding a Touch to the "stable" and want to know about playlist folders. On my Classic, I really like having my playlists separated into folders to keep things organized. I'd like to be able to select Playlists, then see the folders, then select a folder to see what playlists are inside. Does the Touch support this like the Classic? +(Note that this only works on auto-sync'd iPods, so if you manually manage your Touch and don't see folders, perhaps that is why.)+

The Classic and 3rd gen Nano support playlist folders, but only in auto-sync mode*. The 5th generation iPod cannot support folders.
*There is a weird phenomenon I've stumbled across. On the Classic you can have playlist folders if you manually manage the iPod, but you have to auto-sync it first to load it up with all your songs, playlists, and playlist folders. Then, change the iPod to "manual sync" and that will leave the playlist folders intact!
However, be aware that doing this has another side issue, which may be a benefit to some (not me) -- when you change from auto-sync to manual, the songs you play on your iPod will update your library even though you're in manual mode. For more info on that, see this thread:

  • How can I restore my playlist folders in itunes? They are there but the individual song titles aren't listed. They are only listed by album. This makes it very difficult to find songs in my playlist.  Also, when I click on music, it will not list options.

My itunes account is messed up. How can I restore my playlist folders in itunes? The list's are there but the individual song titles aren't. They are only listed by album. I can only see the song titles as they are played at the top of my itunes. This makes it very difficult to find songs in my playlist.  Also when in the itunes store, I am not able to see music genre choices, or search for a song or group.
    Thank you

    Hi dones49,
It sounds like your issue here is that iTunes can not find the files for some of the songs you have brought into it. This happens occasionally even if the songs have not been moved from the location that iTunes places them on import or purchase. When you try to use the song, iTunes prompts you to find the file, as you have seen.
To find the file, use the information in this article to navigate through the iTunes media folders -
Locate and organize your iTunes files
If you are still unable to locate the files, you may need to download them from the iTunes store again, or rip them from your CDs. See this article for assistance with downloading your past purchases -

  • How do I restore playlist folders from iPod classic to iTunes? The library is intact, but the playlists are not and I don't want to rebuild them from scratch!

After reformatting my HD and reimporting all songs back into iTunes succesfully, the playlist folders are gone and I don't want to rebuild them from scratch. How do I restore playlists from iPod classic to iTunes 11.1.3 without resorting to 3rd party options?

I actually tried that in "my computer" by renaming the drive and then got this:
    g-raid (F:) (H:)
then after reading your reply realized I should try renaming it in "disk management" and hey! it worked.
Thanks a lot for the advice.
Now I don't understand why my back-up drive isn't automatically adding the files when I import into the Ex-HD but I'll figuree it out.

  • Can't import songs into itunes playlist folders from itunes music folder

Ive got to be an idiot. ive had my ipod for years and ive yet to figure this out:
how do i put music into my playlist folders? The only playlists ive been able to successfully create and use are the ones ON my ipod. but that requires me to plug in my ipod every time i want to hear music at home.
I've created the playlist folders. They are blue folders, found under the playlists tab on itunes. I select music from the music sections, and drag to the folder, but all i ever get is the Circle and line "No" symbol, i never get a plus sign. Ive ever tried popping the playlist folder into a new window and dragging from one window to the other, and its doesn't work. its there some ridiculous safety feature of iTunes that i need to turn off to make playlists or? I can't imagine that something would be this confusing, but i just don't get it.

    Welcome to AD!
Sounds like you are trying to drag single music files into a playlist folder.
You can only drag a pre-existing playlist into a playlist folder.

  • Can't expand playlist folders in device view

For ripping audiobooks --- use case, the Harry Potter series --- I create playlists for each CD, then put the playlists for each book in playlist folders.
This works (and looks) fine on the iTunes library side, but when I load the playlist folders onto the device (iPod 7gen, pink...) only the first folder looks right (folder icon) and browses correctly in iTunes (expands and collapses). iTunes displays the second and subsequent folders as if they were playlists and doesn't let me expand them for browsing.
On the ipod the icon is also wrong --- once again, looks like a playlist --- but I can browse the folder correctly using the touch interface.
    Details:
    * iTunes 11.4.1.62  on Windoze
    * iPod 7gen (pink), software 1.0.2
    Weird...Thanks!

LaunchServices is often implicated in drag & drop issues.
Launch /Utilities/Terminal and copy & paste this at the command line to rebuild LaunchServices:
    Code:
    <pre class="alt2" style="margin:0px; padding:3px; border:1px inset; width:640px; height:34px; overflow:auto">/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user</pre>
Then press return. Wait until terminal returns to the command line. Quit Terminal. After that, log out and back in or restart. Let us know

  • How to put my podcasts into playlist folders? Can't drag'em.

How to put my podcasts into playlist folders? Can't drag'em.
I've subscribed to a number of podcasts & they appear in my iTunes window under the Podcasts section.
    There i have
    2 problems:
1st: I can't rearrange or group them so can listen consecutively to different topics.
I must listen to one, then come to the keyboard and select the next to start playing. Now, I know that I can get them to play consecutively once I've placed them into Playlist folders,
but that brings me to my second problem:
    2) I can't drag and drop them into separate iTunes FOLDERS (by topics).
(Though I have been able to drag&drop separate items from my 'Music' section into iTunes playlist folders.)
But can't drag from Podcasts section into Playlists,
as everytime I try they just refuse to go in and scurry back to their starting position under Podcasts.
    Zupwidiss? This can't be.
I would be grateful for your solution.
And also grateful if I could have easily found the solution explained
before I had to resort to bothering this forum with this question.
Just using my MacMini, Snow Lep.

    Thanks very much.
    You have reminded of the
    difference between
    Playlists and Playlist Folders:
One can only drag things from the Master list into PLAYLISTS.
And can only drag Playlists into Playlist Folders.
I'm an older man, and easily confused by these things.
Many thanks to my friend in Germany.
    P.S. Your English is excellent.

  • Metadata&Smart playlist/playlist folders freezing malfunction

This problem started pretty soon after I updated to the latest version of Itunes (11.1)
So, I'm going to try to word this in a way that isn't confusing... but the problem is with smart playlists in playlist folders that are then within another playlist folder. Or I guess it's simpler to say... playlists within playlist subfolders.
    For example
    Folder: Classical
    Subfolder: Mozart
    Playlist 1 - concertos
    Playlist 2 - symphonies
    etc
So, what is happening is that if you try to edit any song's metadata in a smart playlist within a subfolder of a folder, itunes freezes immediately.
If I move the smart playlist out of the subfolder and into the main folder, I am able to edit metadata without any freezing or other problems.
This really doesn't make sense to me... any help out there?

I don't have the bandwidth for iCloud integration for AppleTV, but since my local smart playlists were getting it wrong, I kind of freaked out. I fixed it, though, by moving my iTunes Library.itl from my last working clone of ML to the iTunes folder on my Mavericks installation.
I had updated only a few items since it stopped working correctly, and I had nothing to lose, as AppleTV without properly ordered playlists is basically a sleek hokey puck. I don't know why I break down and finally post the issue here after days of hand-wringing and tears of blood only to then try the one thing I hadn't thought to try before.
If anyone else is having trouble with the smart playlists not ordering properly on Apple TV, maybe this will help. Try replacing the ITL and XML files.

  • Playlist Folders: Do They Have a Point?

What exactly is the point of playlist folders in iTunes 5? In 4.9, I had a "Summer - Rock" playlist, a "Summer - Relaxed" playlist, and I had to make a smart playlist for "Summer - All" to play both at once. I did this several times for different lists. Now I can put the Rock and Relaxed lists into a "Summer" folder, and it plays them both at once, which is good...
But I don't listen to music on my computer, I listen to it on my iPod. I sync the iPod... and there's no support for the folders! Even with the new software update for the iPod that came out with iTunes 5! So again, what's the point? I don't think SmartShuffle is supported on the iPod either. I just don't get it.
Can anybody help me make this work, or is the software just lacking?

What you could do is create a smart playlist which features songs from two sperate genres. For example, I have playlist with songs from "90's Music" and a playlist with songs from "80's Music". So what I could do is create a third smart playlist with songs from both genress.
I think that is kind of a solution!

  • Playlist Folders of iPod displayed open by default

If I remember correctly, earlier versions of iTunes did not display the folder structure of an iPod. The current version (8.2.1(6) in my case) does display any folder structure stored on the iPod. That is better.
However, I still have one complaint. In my iTunes library I use one Playlist Folder for each composer (mainly, but also for artists and collections). And in the folders I have playlists for each piece of music. That works fine for me.
My problem is that, when I connect my iPod to my Mac and it is displayed in iTunes, all the Playlist Folders are displayed in the open state by default, i.e. showing all the playlists they contain. In my opinion that defeats the purpose of the folders, i.e. to give a top-down overview of the library. With the folders open I see as many entries (or actually more) than if there were no folders but only playlists. More sensible would be to display the folders closed by default. Then I could just open the folder(s) for the composer(s) I am specifically interested in.
How about it Apple? Please correct that for future versions (I have sent this request to Apple Feedback too).

I haven't updated to the latest version so I can not comment first hand if I am seeing the same default of all folders "open" like you are. But if it helps, I believe you should be able to COMMAND-Click on any of the folder triangles and ALL the folders will open or close.
So when you open iTunes, go to one of the open folders and COMMAND-Click the pointing down arrow to close it and ALL the folders should close for you giving you the view you desire.
    Regards,
    Patrick

  • Playlist folders are supported on the new Nano! (and Classic)

    Hi folks,
You may have noticed that in iTunes 7.4, playlist folders now show up when selecting which playlists to sync to your iPod. Originally, people thought this was just cosmetic on the iTunes side.
I am here to tell you now that it is not just cosmetic. The same folders that you create on iTunes will be ALSO shown on your new Nano (and Classic I assume). Previously, the navigation was:
    Playlists->Playlist
    Now it is:
    Playlists->Folder->Playlist
Which also means you can hit Play on the Folder and it will play every playlist within that folder!

Anyone able to figure out how the ipod sorts playlists within folders?
On my itunes I have a folder of playlists for audiobooks. Within that, there's another folder for each nano and then playlists for the books on that nano. In ITunes, they appear in alphabetical order by playlist name, but on the Nano, it seems random: Here's a sample:
    Beaton
    Bond
    Brett
    Fletcher
    Lippman
    Robb
    Stout
    Crais?
    Wren
    Truman?
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • All playlist folders contain the whole library

    Hi everybody,
I recently updated iTunes to the newest version and now ran into some problems.
First off, everything was gone from the libraryl, no songs, no playlists, nothing. I then tried to recover this by using this guide http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1451.
This kind of worked, but now I have a new problem.
Most of my songs seem to be back in the library. However, I also had playlist folders containing playlists. If I click on those folders, it doesn't only show the content in the playlists, but all the content of the whole library. This means in every folder, about 450 interprets are shown, even ones that I did never put into those playlists.
I tried to delet stuff from those folders, however, that does not work. It just doesn't delete it, but gives no error message whatsoever. I can hit delete as many times as I want, still the songs remain in the folders.
The weirdest thing is, that if I go through the playlists, the songs are in none of them. Example: let's say the folder is called A, and contains the playlists B and C. If I click on A, it shows me my whole library. If I click on B and C, each of the lists only show the songs that should be in there, but not the rest of the library.
I have no idea why this happens, nor have I found any solution to this, and it is very annoying, since this basically messed up my whole organization, and I can't even reorganize it, because it won't let me delete anything.
I also want to add that I can very well delete items from the library, just not from the folders.

    See Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash.

  • Playlist folders aren't showing.  Match issue.

    Hi all,
I use iTunes Match which has usually worked pretty well.  I recently started sorting my playlists into folders, since I have about 30 playlists and would like to keep them somewhat organized.
However I can't see any of my playlists on my iPad.
When I open the Music app and tap into the Playlists tab, I initially didn't see any of my playlists at all, just the "genius playlists" which I don't want and "blank" playlists bearing the names of some, but not all, of my folders.  This is what I see now:
The only playlists that are actually showing up are the two that aren't in folders.  And they synced instantly; once I realized it was the folders that were missing, I tried pulling them out of the folders in the iTunes on my Mac, and as soon as I did that the individual playlists showed up in the list.  So it's clear that the problem is specific to playlist folders.
Playlist folders work just fine on my iPhone.  Beautifully, in fact.
    This is just incredibly frustrating.

Turns out they were showing up, just all the way at the bottom of my list of bookmarks. I just couldn't see them. If you go to "Bookmarks"->"Organize Bookmarks" and then play around in there with highlighting on "Bookmarks Menu" you should be able to figure it out. Otherwise you just have to move them up to the top individually. Hope that helps! ~Kate

  • IPOD needs playlist folders

I like how iTunes 5 lets you create folders where you can store a variety of playlists/smart playlists within the folder.... but on your ipod it just jumbles all these playlists together in alphabetical order. It's nice they added this organiztion to iTunes, but why not on the iPod????

Glad to see I'm not the only one unhappy. I just updated my iTunes and iPod. SOOOOO disappointed that the wonderful feature of playlist folders was not part of iPod's update. What a waste! I added new playlist into folders thinking that would be a great way to access the tons of songs on iPod....but no. How could this have been over looked...unless of course it is not possible to add to the standard iPod? Maybe this is only a nano feature.

  • Syncing problems when using playlist folders

I am using playlist folders on iTunes. When syncing to an old iPod photo, all the playlists are copied (without the folder structure). Trying sync for the first time on a new iPhone 4S, only playlists that are outside the folder structure are copied reliably. Playlists that are inside folders were mostly not copied at all (the songs themselves were copied). Strangely, one (but only one) of the folders did copy in full, including both the folder itself and the playlists inside the folder. Any ideas?

    Hi,
    No.
iMessages sent to the Phone Number are not synced at this time
The Process tend to send via the ID that was called (i.e the iPhone Number) and these do not sync to the Mac and the Messages app there or to any other iOS device.

  • ITunes playlist Folders not copied over to iPod?

I have some of my playlists organized by folders (chapters of a book), but the folders do not show up on my iPod. Instead I see a flat list of play-lists -- a problem since that gives me duplicate playlist names. Am I doing something wrong?

As far as I am aware, the iPod Touch doesn't support playlist folders. I recall many posts when playlist folder syncing was first introduced about the function being missing from the iPod Touch and the iPhone. You can however confirm that if you wish by posting in the iPod Touch forum in case a subsequent software update introduced the option: Discussions - iPod Touch

  • Playlist folders keep opening

I just installed iTunes version 11.1.2 on my Mac.  Since I have done that, my playlist folders keep opening up when I do a search for a song.  I have 225 playlists, and have them broken down into 5 folders -- playlists 1-50, 51-100,etc.  Normally, I only keep the final one (201-250) open.  Now, when I do a search in the library for a song, the playlist folders all open up, showing all 225 playists.  This never happened until I did the update.  Anyone know a setting change to make to stop this from happening?  Thanks

I have the same problem since upgrading to 11.1.anything version of iTunes.  All the playlist folders keep popping open, for no reason that I can discern.
On my Mac (iTunes 11.1.3), a Command-click on any folder's little triangle closes all the folders on that level all at once.  It's not a fix, but at least you don't have to close 230 folders one at a time.
On my Windows 7 machine (iTunes 11.0.2*), control-click seems to do this same thing.
*It's too late for my Mac, but for my Windows 7 machine I'm extremely reluctant to 'upgrade' to the very buggy 11.1 version till Apple removes the bugs they inserted.  I have seen no benefit from 11.1 on the Mac, just many new bugs.
Hey Apple!  This folders-popping-open thing is VERY ANNOYING.  Please fix!
