Playlist/Genres e

Hi,
Just got a Zen Xtra and I am trying to reduce the number of playlists. Is it possible to change the titles of the default Genre/Artist/Album lists without losing associated music files? What I would like to do is create my own such as "Artists A thru D" and can't seem to figure out how. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Matt

I believe you can check Genres collecti'vely in MediaSource by selecting the relevant albums in MediaSource, then going to their collecti've properties. Beware though that any changes you make on the player won't be saved when you copy the files back to the PC.

If it's slow on startup it would be extensions loading or LaunchDaemons starting up.
You should have a look in:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
    /Library/Extensions
You can count out anything in your home folder and it shouldn't put anything in /System as that's reserved for Apple.

  • If I reinstall Itunes will it delete all of my playlists, genres, etc?

    Help,
First time IPod owner who loaded 1,800 songs most of which had bad info (ie: wrong genre, artist showing as title, etc.) I've spent hours making changes in ITunes trying to get them right. I am having troubles connecting my IPod to ITunes and the online support says I need to reinstall ITunes. I looked back at the "music" folder where the files are stored and none of the changes that I made in ITunes show there. So again I ask:
If I reinstall Itunes will it delete all of my playlists, genres, etc?

under normal circumstance, it won't touch them. i've done at least 8 upgrades without losing any genres, playlists or song information.
but, it's best to insure against disaster and back up your music files and library files prior to an upgrade. (actually, it's best to have a regular backup regime even if you aren't planning on upgrading.) this Buegie post is a good resource on those matters:

  • New Smart Playlist / Genre = / Genre does not display in Info list

I'd greatly appreciate help.. spent many hours looking for answer already.
I have created several Smart Playlists in the past. They work fine. They are all classified by Genre.
Now I have created a new Smart Playlist. It all looks fine with the Genre set correctly.
However in Music, when I try to set the Info of a recording to that Genre, the Genre does NOT appear in the Info list.
All previously created Genres are there, but the Genre for the new Smart Playlist is never there.
I have tried over and over and over again. I have deleted the new Smart Playlist, re-created it, created another Smart Playlist, with anonther name ... exited iTunes and re-started it several times ... rebooted the computer ...
Whatever I do, the Genre of the new Smart Playlist does not appear in the Info list.
Any ideas at all? Is there a limit to the number of Genres? I must say I'd love to get rid of a large number of the pre-existing Genres like 'Industrial', Hip Hop/Rap, whatever, that will definitely never be used!
    Many thanks
    --

    Camoracer,
...If the genre is not listed in the drop down then type > it in yourself when editing track info.
Thank you VERY much. I am not a very regular user of iTunes and had forgotten that the first time a new Genre is created, you have to physically type in the name in the Info field .. even though there is a new Smart Playlist with that Genre already defined!
Ah well... one of these days when I get some time I'll have to write up an aide memoire for using iTunes! In the meantime I'll not forget this one! Thanks again, I appreciate your time.

  • Smart playlists - genre and rating, two questions

I can't figure out a way to create a smart playlist that includes Rock and Alternative songs but only Rock and Alternative songs rated 4 or 5 stars. I can easily create a playlist that includes one genre and is limited to a star rating and I know I can create the list I want by first limiting my playlist to 4 or 5 stars and then subtracting genres but my library includes 51 Genres!
Actually, I might be willing to create a playlist by subtracting 49 genres if I could then duplicate the list so I can create the second playlist I want; 4 and 5 star World and Latino songs. So, question #2 is, is there any way to duplicate a playlist?
    TIA,
    Peter

Oh, you got it!!! I'd never noticed "Playlist" as a parameter in the smart playlists! Suddenly all kinds of possibilities open up! It did work the way you suggested but I decided to take a different tack. I created a 4-5 star "rock" playlist and a 4-5 star "alternative" playlist and then created a third smart playlist that includes the first two playlists! Now I can just continue creating smart playlists that include only songs I rate 4-5 stars in all of my 51 genres and create composite playlists to my heart's content! OK, I wouldn't do that. Once I get over 25 genres, it'd be easier to go back to the subtraction method. ; )
Thanks for your help Diane! You're brilliant!

  • Help with playlist genre separation, please?

I loaded songs, books, comedy, some meditations on my touch (3rd gen, 32 GB), the problem is that they are all in the mix when I press music- songs, comedy, audiobooks (that are not audible). So I get a song, then an excerpt from a book or a comedy CD, and I cannot figure out how to fix this. This is my first iPod, so I am new to all this but it's making me nuts and I would appreciate any help. Thank you for your time, Cindy

Thank you for your answer, that does help, and I'm hoping you can answer another question along this line. In music, I don't care if all the different genres are mixed together, I just don't want to hear chapters from a book I added (a book not from audible, for some reason anything from audible stays separate on it's own) in between songs. When I add a book why can't I get it to go into the books category, why does it automatically get added in with songs? Also, after touching the music key on the iPod, then the "more" button, then "edit", a black background comes up with Configure across the top, and 10 icons representing the categories: playlists, artists, songs, etc. If I touch one of the icons, nothing happens, so what are my configuration options anyway? I will try the playlist thing through itunes with the iPod attached, but if I cannot get the books out of the music area I guess I will just have to delete them-it seems like it should be easier to have what you want where you want it on such a sophisticated device. Sorry for all the questions, this stuff has just had me confused for the longest time, and I really appreciate your time and help. Cindy

  • My ipad will not sync checked songs, playlists, genres, from itunes.

I have tried to sync updated checked songs, playlists, and genres, from my itunes to ipad without success.  I have tried over wifi and usb cable.  Neither will work.  What are the possible solutions?  Is this an itunes or ipad problem?

I don't know how long I had this problem, but I noticed it after recent upgrades in IOS and iTunes. None of the suggestions I found online, including the ones attached to this thread, worked until I saw something about moving your iTunes Media folder to a new location on your computer. This article mentioned that older versions of iTunes used a folder called iTunes Music. I discovered that I had an iTunes Music folder in my music library that had my stuff in it as well as an iTunes Media folder that had none of it. Before following the instructions in the article--written in AppleSpeak which I do not--I thought, I wonder if I can play my music through iTunes on my PC? I clicked on a song and got a message that iTunes didn't find it but would I like iTunes to look for this on my computer? YES! And then iTunes offered to find other similar files and I said YES again. This found all my music but one album. When I clicked on a song from that, the process repeated and all my music is now playable in iTunes on my computer and has synced to my iPad Air. During the process iTunes also asked me for my Audible.com username and password and attempted to bring over my Audible books. (This was not entirely successful since I cancelled my Audible.com account when I stopped doing a lot of road travel. But the titles of books I purchased all appear to be there even if not the complete books.) BTW, iTunes does not seem to have moved my music and Audible.com books out of iTunes Music. So I will now see if there is an easy way to consolidate into the iTunes Media folder without breaking anything to avoid problems in the future.

  • Idea to help clean up Browse / Top Lists since update & add genre to playlist

    Hi Spotify.
Since your recent update this week, the Browse / Top Lists fuction is not very fucnctionable. There are many user curated playlists missing where we used to be able to search from.
I'm sure there is a clean up operation in your back end, whereby you are releasing more Spotify curated playlists based on genre/mood.
However in order to be able to enhance the user experience, why don't you enable a function whereby if a user is to release a 'public playlist' then there should be an option to categorize by genre. Then based on followers / trending, a playlist could be filtered into one of your Genres & Mood boxes as well as featuring in the Top Lists section of Browse.
Perhaps under "+ New Playlist " (Sidebar in Desktop version), you could have a "+ New Advanced Playlist" and this could be the option for the user who want to categorize their playlist to a genre.
I'm aware that some users would put the wrong genres based on the tracks added.
However I'm sure you can filter this before adding to a Genre & Mood box. Surely its just a simple bit of code check as each track must have a categorization in the digital meta data.
In this feature user should be able to drag & drop old uncategorised playlists into this function to be able to categorize without losing content or followers. Or alternatively when right-clicking on an old playlist have the option to 'add genre'.
Or if you are moving away from having user created playlists from the 'Top Lists', then perhaps you should have a 'user playlists' section for us to browse through.
If you had a decent genre pick option, then after a certain time, your data will tell you which new playlist genres are trending/popular wherby you could react by adding that new genre to the Genres & Moods'.
    Thanks
    Jon

  • Smart playlists not working?

    Hi all,
OK Im trying to setup a smart playlist for my Nano. Set the parametres I want ie. only those artists that contain Stevie Ray Vaughan and Rory Gallagher, not anything set with the genre of Music Video and limit to 8GB only.
See this image for the results in the background...
    http://www.mindofdesign.com/odds/smart.jpg
Its version 7.6.2 by the way.
    Anyone else having this trouble?

I think the problem is that you what you have match any checked and one of the options is Genre is NOT music videos. Therefore, the Smart playlist will select anything in your library that isn't a music video.
In other words, you can't do Stevie Ray Vaughn AND Rory Gallagher BUT NOT music videos all in one go.
You need to set up a playlist that has the criteria Artist is Stevie Ray Vaughn, Artist is Rory Gallagher, Match Any. Then, set up a second playlist with the criteria match all, Playlist is <first playlist>, Genre is not music video.

  • "Purchased" playlist when syncing

I have an iPod Nano (I think 4th generation) which syncs with a music library in iTunes on my iMac. All software is up to date.
When my iPod is mounted and I am in iTunes, and I select my iPod as a device, and then go to the tab Music, I see the four areas Playlists, Genres, Album and Artists where Ican choose things to be synced with my iPod.  In the Playlist box is an item called Purchased which is NOT in the list of Playlists shown in iTunes.  What is it, and why is it in the Playlists box for syncing when it is not in my Playlists as shown in iTunes?
As a more general form of this quesiton, what do I need to read in order to understand these puzzling asplects of iTunes?

See https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3399264?start=0&tstart=0 -- the answer in this thread fixed it.

  • How do i make the same song have two different genre

how do i make the same song have 2 different genre for 2 different playlist?

In my example, we will create a Smart Playlist that includes all songs in the genre Acid Jazz and one extra song that has the genre of Afro-beat. That extra song will be "Music For Gong Gong". To create your Smart Playlist, substitute the genre types and the song title (anything with <  > around it) for the ones you want.
In your iTunes Library, either click on the + symbol in the lower left corner of iTunes playlists, or click CTRL+ALT+N to create a New Smart Playlist. The following will appear (my orange numbering):
    1. Using the drop-down menus, change "Artist" to Genre, "contains" to is and in the text box (marked 1) type in the text <Acid Jazz> (remember to chose the genre you want, and with the exact spelling used for that genre in your library - don't type in the <  > obviously!)
    2. Click on the + symbol at the end of that line (marked 2), which creates an additional line
    3. In this new line, change "Artist" to Grouping, change "contains" to is and in the text box type in <Acid Jazz> (Notice that I have used the same name as the genre itself. You don''t have to, but it makes it easier to add those extra songs. You'll understand why in step 7.) You now have a box like this:
    4. Change the Match rule at the top (notice it has already changed in the two screenshots above) to any. This is a crucial step, do not forget it.
    5. Notice that I have also selected Match only ticked items. This is optional, but selecting it will exclude songs that have been unticked. If you use Sync only ticked songs and videos, this can be useful way of keeping the Playlist the same as the one on your device.
    6. Click the OK button. You now have the opportunity to name your Playlist. I have chosen <Genre is Acid Jazz +> so that it is obvious what it is.
So that's the Playlist created. As you can see, <Genre is Acid Jazz +> has 89 songs in it and I can assure you that's how many songs are in the Acid Jazz genre section. Now, all that remains is to add the additional song.
    7. Find your "two-genre" song and click File/Get Info/Info (or CTRL+I - that's an "eye") to bring up the edit song option. In the Grouping field, type in <Acid Jazz> (remember to use the same text you used in the Grouping box in step 3. This means you only have to type in the same genre name to the Grouping box,  to get it into that particular Playlist. I mentioned this in step 3).
Notice that we are not changing the Genre. Click the OK button.
Now look at the Playlist <Genre is Acid Jazz +> again.
Notice that is now has 90 songs and at number 60 is the <Music For Gong Gong>. Note that the genre for that song is still Afro-beat, so the song still appears in the genre Afro-beat as well.
To add any other song to this particular two-genre Playlist, simply find the song in your Library and type <Acid Jazz> into the Grouping box, as in step 7. It's that simple!
Here's an extra tip. Too many Playlists and having issues finding your way through them?
I have renamed the Playlist Genre is Acid Jazz + so that it is now named Acid Jazz Plus and I've dropped it into a Playlists Folder named GENRES (capitals makes it easy to find the folders on iDevices).
Notice that here in iTunes, Playlists are sorted in the following order:
Playlist Folders (and then the Smart Playlists and Regular Playlists inside it)
    Smart Playlists
    Regular Playlists
... but on my iPod Classic (for example), they are sorted in alphabetical order. So to find the Playlist Acid Jazz Plus, go into the Playlists menu and scroll down to G, go into GENRES, and in there will be Acid Jazz Plus, with all 90 songs!
I hope you will give this a try, you have nothing to lose but a little time. Let us (all) know how you get on with it. We'd like to know.

  • What is happening to my smart playlists?!

i recently made a few smart playlists and they immediately worked. but then when i bought a new hip hop song it didn't go into the plaaylist. all settings are right (which playlist, genre etc...etc) and live updating is ticked but my smart playlist still wont include the songs! pls help.

Well it's a "smart playlist" and clearly you should not be listening to hip-hop, rap or any other such genres, it's protecting you!
What are the parameters of the smart play list you created, and why do you think it should have gone into it? Does the album in the appear in the recently added list?

  • What happened to music/playlists

I just did a restore from a back up. All of my apps, pictures, contacts, etc restored except my music! What happened to it? Please help!!!

    Correct.
When syncing music, your selected playlists, genres, and artists under the Music tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes would be pre-selected when restoring your iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup. When restoring as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup, all you need to do is reselect the playlists, artists, genres under the Music tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes followed by a sync to re-transfer your selected content, which is the same for all other selections under the various tabs for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes. The reason all your apps were re-transferred automatically after restoring your iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup is because you have Sync Apps selected under the Apps tab for your iPhone sync preferences.
When manually managing music and videos, you must manually select the music and videos you want re-transferred to your iPhone after restoring your iPhone with iTunes.
Since the iPhone doesn't support disk mode as with most iPods which doesn't allow for transferring selected iTunes content to the iPhone from an iTunes library on multiple computers, there isn't much benefit to manually managing music and videos with an iPhone.

  • Forever Stuck Creating Genius Playlist

    I have a problem.
Using the new iOS 7, I tried to create a genius playlist. But, none of my songs "have enough related songs" to create one.
But, that's not the biggest problem. Now I'm stuck in the process of making a Genius Playlist, and I can't get back to my normal music library, which means I can't access to any of my playlists, genres, etc.
(Whenever I try to play a song, a sign pops up saying, "Try again, This song does not have enough related songs to create a Genius Playlist.")

Try going to store and rebooting.  It worked for me

  • Missing Playlist Category / Cannot Access Playlists

I have just bought a 120gb, iPod classic.
I do not have the option to access my Playlists. Under "Music", I have the following options: "Genius", "Artists", "Albums", "Compilations", "Songs", "Genres", "Composers", "Audiobooks", and "Search". Nothing for "Playlists".
I also have an iPhone and a 2nd Gen Nano that I synch to the same library, and neither of them have the same problem. Am I just looking in the wrong place?

    Hey there,
    Try this:
Head to your iPod's main menu and then scroll down to "Settings." From there you will want to find the "Music Menu" setting. After you select that you will see the entire list of items list under music such as playlists, genres, artists, and such. Make sure there is a check mark next to Playlist by clicking the Center button to place a check mark next to it to be able to access it from the Music menu and see if that helps.
