Playlist limitation?

In iTunes 7.0.x the nano sync shows a music list with all available playlists. If selected albums are checked, the transfer is quite easy. I today noticed this list is cut under the letters TO... so it seems the number of playlists shown here is limited. Since my library is rather big (more than 25000 files and some >1500 playlists) I am forced at this time to load the nano manually...

Hi mkummer!
As things stand, folks are reporting that playlists are limited to approx. 1100 currently.
We'll see what the future brings....

  • Smart Playlists - limiting by My Rating of songs

OK - this is probably a really simple question but it's really frustrating me.
I'm trying to create a smart playlist by limiting songs that have a certain rating. Sounds simple enough.
However, in the options box when you select My Rating as the criteria, I can't type anything in the box next to it to say what rating you want to limit it by - if you see what I mean. Any suggestions.

You don't type in the box; you click in the box to enable how many stars you want. Give that a try and see if that works for you.

  • Smart Playlist: Limitation or broken iPod?

I have been struggling mightily trying to get my Smart Playlists to sync properly between iTunes and my iPod. One particular playlist that has been a major problem is one with two filters, the first filter is for purchases, and the second filter is for songs played less than 10 times. In iTunes, this Smart Playlist works just as I would expect, with all of the songs filtered out that have 10 or more plays. However, on my iPod, the second filter is completely ignored, and only purchased songs will show up.
Oddly, when I sync iTune with my iPod, for the flash of second, the filters work, but then, it reverts back to only honoring the first of the two filters.
So, the question is: is Plays not a filter that will work on an iPod, and this is expected, or my iPod not working properly with regard to Smart Playlists?
    Thanks,
    Ryan B
Update: The Playlist works on iPod when Live Updating is unselected. Does not work correctly when Live Updating is selected.

hmm, I thought I was only seeing a porblem with my ipod shuffle on my Mac - starting with itunes 8.1 and hte 3rd gen shuffle, I have to sync my 1st en shuffle twice to even get stuff onto it, sometimes. And of course since it has no clock, everything syncs back with the time I am syncing it, not the time it was actually played.
camoracer may be onto something. I just played a song from a smart playlist on my 5th gen clickwheel ipod, and it didn't sync back OK.
edit - correction, I played it from an On-The-Go playlist. The On-The-Go playlists got synced back, but not the track playcount.
I DO use a complicated playlists on my 2nd gen nano and it syncs the playcounts OK.
I wonder if it has anything to do with the iPod model?

  • Smart Playlists limits me to 267 songs?

    Hi,
Total newb here...I have 1000 or so songs on my iPod and I am trying to create a smart playlist called "80's Music" that will add any song from 1980 to 1989. problem is that it will only put a limit of 267 songs into this playlist. How do I get it to put all of them in there? There are at least 800 80's songs on the iPod...I know how to tell it that I want the years specified.
    Any help much appreciated!
    Steve

    Try this:
    http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o168/VixenofVenus/smartplaylist.jpg
If you've already tried that and its still only putting 267 songs in the list, then you might want to check some songs that AREN'T in the list that SHOULD be to see if they have the Year tag set correctly.
Personally, I know I don't have the Year tag set in all my music. In the past I have forgotten to set it and I just haven't gone through it all to change all the albums so they have the Year tags set ...

  • Limiting playlists to rated songs per artist

I often want to listen to an album or artist but only the songs I have rated. In iTunes I have a playlist of all rated songs. I type the artist or album name in search for a quick way of limiting the playlist to what I want to hear. My question is, how can I get the same result on the iPod? (without creating playlists for every artist, etc.)

Smart playlist limited to only rated songs. Sort the playlist by artist. Then when you want to play scroll to track you want.
It is cumbersome but there is very limited playlist editing available on the ipod. I have a playlist that only contains songs not played. As I play the tracks drop off the list. Eventually When I have listened to all tracks I will edit playlist to tracks played less than twice. While playing I tend to add ratings. If I get distracted and forget I have another playlist to catch tracks with playcount=1 but not rated.

  • Smart playlist not working

My smart playlists aren't doing jack squat for updating. The live-update checkbox is checked. I tried unchecking it, then going back and checking it again. No luck. I have lots of new songs on my computer that simply are not showing up. And the music isn't random at all. It's not changing. Very frustrating.
I have a smart playlist limiting size (so it fits on my ipod), checked random, and live-updating. Nothing else. But it won't update.
I'd just recreate it every time I want to sync (which I did once hoping to fix the problem), but it's used in a bunch of other playlists too, so that's a huge pain to recreate all those too.
Anyone know how to troubleshoot this? I am lost, and a bit mad at the software (trying hard not to dislike apple right now).

    HappyPants wrote:
Why can't my criteria simply be limit size to 14800MB ...
So I guess checking random just selects random songs, it's not actually a criteria. So really that Should be a criteria....Random. Just that.
I Just want a certain number/size of random songs.
You have to have at least one criteria, which can be something as simple as "Bitrate Is Greater Than 1 kbps" which all your music would meet, then set it to select 14800MB selected at random. iTunes will grab 14800MB worth of songs, selected at random, but the contents won't change unless you include criteria that forces songs out of the playlist to be replaced. Otherwise, the playlist contents will never change. Make sense?
    HappyPants wrote:
In my case I really don't want to use the criteria as you suggest, "last played is not in the last 'x' days" because sometimes I like to hear the same songs over and over again ... I just can't fit all my music on my ipod and wanted the nano for it's size. So the best solution for me is to just have it randomize my songs a bit every time I sync.
Then how is iTunes supposed to differentiate between the songs you like to hear over and over and other songs that it needs to select "at random"?
    HappyPants wrote:
After some thought, I chose to do: last skipped is not in the last 1 day.
That should change quite frequently before putting a song back into the playlist, and it should keep the songs that I like listening to over and over.
    Now you're thinking
I still would like there to just be some way of just limiting the size and having it random though.
You can do this (see my first suggestion in this post). However, what you're asking is for iTunes to somehow know what songs you want to keep on your iPod vs. the songs it is supposed to pick at random.
I would recommend you make a regular playlist (not smart) that holds the songs that you always want on your iPod, then a smart playlist that randomly selects from the rest of your music. In the smart playlist, include the criteria "playlist is not (other playlist name)" so that you don't double up on the same songs.
If you want to manage an iPod that is smaller than your library, I would recommend you spend some time reading an excellent paper on how to do this:

So I have been using my iPad for a few months now and I recently noticed that the time display next to the playlist name in the music  app that is supposed to display the total song count and time of a playlist is way off. I have a 25 song playlist that is around 2 hours on my computer appears as 2003 minutes on my iPad.  It's a smart playlist limited to 25 songs if that makes any difference. Greetings,
First make an iCal backup, File > Export > Archive.
Remove the following to the trash and restart your computer:
    Home > Library > Caches
Home > Library > Calendars > Calendar Cache, Cache, Cache 1, 2, 3, etc. (Do not remove Sync Cache or Theme Cache)
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.ical (There may be more than one of these. Remove them all.)
__NOTE: Removing these files will remove any shared (CalDAV) calendars you may have access to. You will have to re-add those calendars to iCal > Preferences > Accounts.
Once the computer is back up and running open iCal and test.
    Hope that helps.

  • Max number of tracks in genius playlist

Using Apple TV 2 updated to 4.1 - is there a way to increase the number of tracks in a genius playlist? Seems to default to 25.

Regarding playlist limits, the only one I've ever seen is the On The Go playlist, which seems to be capped at 1000 songs (not sure if that's still true).
Sounds like something else is going on ... do you auto-sync the Touch? If so, do you auto-sync to everything in your library, or just selected playlists? Or, do you manually manage the Touch's contents? There really should be no reason for a playlist to max out unless it was defined to be limited to a certain amount of songs or MB's (check the playlist definition).
The other thing you mention about changing the song rating, if you're using the 3.0 software then "Live Updating" on the Touch is broken under certain conditions. Playlists will update, but not until you re-connect to iTunes. This isn't universally true apparently (but all mine are broken) as it seems to happen under specific conditions, such as a smart playlist that depends on the contents of another smart playlist. If that's the case, then if you change a song's rating it may not drop out of "Top Rated" until your next sync to iTunes.
Maybe post back exactly how you're synchronizing or adding music to your Touch and perhaps we can help.

  • Apple tv youtube playlist missing videos

When I am on my laptop and on YouTube, I can see all the videos in my playlists. When I sign on to the same account through Apple TV 3 with 5.1 update some of the videos are not displayed. I have the same 4 playlists showing on both the laptop and Apple TV. On the laptop 3 of the lists each contain 6 videos and one has 26.  On Apple TV, two of the playlists contain 2 videos each, another has 5 and the largest appears to be almost full with 24 videos and has a message at the bottom saying "Load 1 more video, 1 video remaining." Is each playlist limited to 25 videos? Are the limits listed anywhere? Why are some of the videos missing?
    Thanks,
    Lampliter

    Hi Warcryer,
Thanks for the quick reply. I ran a small test and I think you are right. The videos I cannot watch on Apple TV probably contain Digital Rights Management coding. To test this I added a second copy of a video that was already being displayed on Apple TV. I used the laptop to add the copy to the playlist. By the time I turned on Apple TV, both copies we available for viewing. So it looks like if you want to play a video on Apple TV, it must be free of Digital Rights Management coding. That is very disappointing.
    Thank you again,

  • Playlists created on iPod

Does anyone know how to transfer a playlist I created on my iPod (using the on-the-go playlist feature) into iTunes? All the songs on my iPod came from my iTunes, so they're all mine, but I just want to copy the playlist without having to go through it manually and add each song to a new playlist. Does anyone know how to just copy a playlist from the iPod to iTunes, when all the songs are in iTunes already?

But if I understand correctly, I can make it automatic for some playlists, transfer the on-the-go playlist, and then go back to manual mode?
    If you want.
I just use smart playlists limited to 3700MB and have it on Auto update all the time.

  • Multiple ipods synced to the same itunes question...

i have a 60 gig i pod and when i bought my new imac, i got an ipod nano... i am a runner and love to use the nano to work out with. i make a "running mix" that i change almost daily to keep it fresh and not boring. is there a way that i can set the ipod to sync to that place list AND be able to add stuff manually to the nano? i have like 40 gig of music and it obviously wont all fit on the nano. i want the nano to automatically update the running mix every time i hook it up to itunes. so far i can only figure out how to do one or the other... either manually update or only sync it to one or multiple playlists. can anyone help me?

You can't sync and manually manage your music you have to do one or the other. However what you could do if you want to easily change the music regularly and make the iPod simple to update is to use "Sync Music - Selected Playlists" and sync from a smart playlist that chooses songs randomly from iTunes. Open iTunes and create a playlist to update your iPod from, call it -iPod Nano to make it the first playlist in Sources. Make it a random Smart playlist limited to just less than the size of your iPod (for example 3700MB for a 4G iPod Nano). Now connect your iPod and when it appears in the Source list click on the iPod icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. Go to the Music tab and choose Sync Music and the Selected playlists radio button. Choose the playlist you just made from the selection and click Apply:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
How to use multiple iPods with one computer
To make a random playlist go to File>New Smart Playlist.
    Uncheck "Match the following rule"
Check "Limit to" put "3700" in the number box, choose "MB" from the first list box, choose "Random" from the next list box. Check "Live Updating"
When you want to change the selection in the playlist just delete everything in it and it will add a new selection, connect your iPod to iTunes to update it with the changes.

  • Crossfade Playback & Unchecked Songs

The crossfade playback functionality works quite well and does what it is supposed to do except when the playlist contains both checked and unchecked songs. There's no crossfade at all when an unchecked song is encountered before moving on to the next checked song (I hope it's more or less clear what I mean).
Is there any way to get around this?
iMac G4 Flat Panel   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Rather than checking and unchecking tracks as your primary method of controlling what goes on the iPod, instead check your entire library then use playlists and smart playlists to group your stuff and you can then set up the iPod to ONLY sync playlists you pick.
For example, you might make a Smart Playlist limited to xx number of songs or xx gigs or whatever you want and the playlist is the stuff "Least Recently Played". Check live updating so this list is constantly updated. Now pick this as the playlist synced to your iPod. Each time you listen to stuff in iTunes or the iPod those items become the MOST recently played and will fall out of that list and be replaced with something new. Each time you sync your iPod, that list will refresh and you will get a constantly changing selection of stuff.
Of just create a normal (not Smart) playlist, pick that one to sync to your iPod and just manually add and delete stuff from it, keeping it under whatever space you have on the iPod. This gives you what you have now, but you can leave everything in your library checked.

  • Organizing Itunes songs by "Dated Created"

here's what I want to do in iTunes and why I want to do it:
I want to organize my songs (and media) by date they were "created". this organizes in a different fashion than "date modified" or "date added". Why haven't they added this as a view option yet? Windows allows you organize files by the date they were created, why can't it be done in iTunes?
Here's why I want to see my songs organized by "date created":
My itunes database has crashed a few times, and I want to see the albums ordered as I "created" them in the past. I have a large library now, and it's mainly from records and cds as source material. Now, I realize there is going to be a few out of place songs (such as purchased songs form the music store, etc.), but the bulk of what I've added to my collection has been done in a chronological fashion that will enable me to start again from where I left off since my library databases became corrupt...
Any ideas? Oh, I'm switching to the intel Mac soon, so maybe apple has this figured out on there mac iTunes software.

Patrick, there is a bpm tag for each song/file you have. If your files are .mp3s, then there is an easy way to get easily the speed and tag each of them fast. It's a free app called BPM analyzer. http://www.mixmeister.com/bpmanalyzer/bpmanalyzer.asp. Once you have the BPM of each song you can create a smart playlist limiting the speed or determing a range. If you add the BPM column, You can sort your lists by it.

  • The ultimate iTunes match deal breakers

Hi everyone, this post is to back up most of the demands and concerns people are posting everywhere on the web about iTunes Match. Needless to say i'm having the same issues. This is what I've got so far.
1.- itunes Match doesn't support smart playlists who refer to other playlists
2.- itunes match should reflect the exact same smart play list with the same songs and the same order and live update itsself across all computers and devices, but it doesn't
3.- Play counts, skipped and last played from ios devices are not syncing with Itunes so Samrt Playlist using these parameters don't work properly
4.- Smart playlist limited to certain amount of songs (let's say 25) on an ios device reflect always more (let´s say 28 or 32)
5.- After hearing one smart playlist on an ios device limited to 25 songs and programmed to live update itself, finishes playing the first 25 songs and ends up empty with no live update from Itunes match what so ever
6.- One smart playlist reflecting entirely different results of content on each computer or mobile device
7.- When listening to music from itunes match on an ios device, it sometimes just skips songs (when not in random or shuffle)
8.- When you want to download a song to hear it in your ios device, you can hear it, but some times even if you hear it, it doesn't download and marks error at the end or simply just gets stuck there trying to download
9.- Poor matching. A bunch of songs purchased on the itunes store with other ID are not recognized as purchased or matched and had to upload them
10.- itunes match is not reliable to be used as it was first intended. Right now it just works as a backup dipository on the cloud and not much more use than that right now.
I've been trying to find a solution my self and on the web for all these issues with no luck at all. Up to this point no one knows and Apple is not saying anything. It seems that right now it is better to keep using itunes with your mobile devices as we were doing before itunes match.
I'm posting this inviting other users to post their own problems as we need apple to hear us and work on the issues we, as users are finding on this service.
So, is there anyone with these or other issues? or better yet. Is there anyone finding solutions for these issues?
    Thanks.

  • Filling iPod shuffle with random albums

I want to be able to autofill my ipod shuffle with a random selection of albums - i.e. I want to listen to whole albums at a time.
I have tried creating a smart playlist limited to 900mb that takes items from 'music' and fills it randomly. Setting the shuffle mode to 'by album' seems to work, with itunes adding whole albums in a random order. I can then tell itunes to autofill from that playlist.
My problem is that, having created the smart playlist, I can't seem to 'refresh' it with a new (random) selection without actually making a new playlist.
    Any ideas anyone?

Setting the shuffle mode to 'by album' seems to work, with itunes adding whole albums in a random order
First time I ever heard that setting to Shuffle by Album gets entire albums.
    Amazingly, it works!
    Thaks for the tip!
