Playlist order different on iPod

I thought I'd found a solution to this elsewhere on the boards, but I was wrong
On my iPod I have a playlist called Purchased Music, which was initially synced from iTunes. Because I update manually, each time I buy a new song, I drag it into the iPod library, and then from there to this playlist.
Altho it shows up alphabetically on iTunes, when I go to my iPod to listen to it, the most recently purchased songs are at the end of the list. I can't drag them to the order I want them in, because they are in alphabetical order, according to iTunes.
I know it's not a big deal, but I'm a bit anal about lists and stuff on my iPod - and I'm sure I can't be the only one!!!
I could delete the whole list and drag it over again from iTunes, but that seems to put a second copy on my iPod.
Most perplexing

Charley,
I was waiting for someone to mention this. Gopha has noticed this very irritating phenomenon when Synching stuff across too as well. It's in perfect order in iTunes, but reverse order on the Pod.
The solution is simple I've found. Synchronise your iPod once to get the stuff across. And then resynchronise *a second time* by clicking the iPod and selecting "Update iPod" (or equivalent), and force it to synchronise again, without needing to disconnect/reconnect it.
This should do the trick - I found it does for me. I have a Playlist arranged by Most Recently Added - and it was always in the wrong order (ie. least recently added first, opposite to how I wanted it) - until I did things this way, and now the most recently added song is the first in the playlist.
Hope this helps and works for you too...
Kind regards,
Gopha

  • Sort order differs on iPod

I've just replaced my G2 iPod with a 60GB 5G iPod. The song sort order on the 'standard' playlists like 'Songs" (as opposed to the playlists I create myself) have a different sort order from how they're displayed in iTunes. For example, I sort 'Recently Added' by date with the most recent at the top, on the iPod they are sorted alphabetically even though the iPod playlist in Tunes has them sorted by date. has anyone else experienced this or is there a setting for altering the sort order on the iPod that I haven't discovered?
    TIA

I think that is basic sorting for the iPod. For example if you have an album of songs but no track number noted for each song they will show up in the album section but be listed alphabetically where if they have track #'s then they will be listed in tract # order.
I hope this answers your question.

  • Playlist order different between iPhone and iTunes

I updated to 3.1 and iTunes 9. In iTunes lets say i have 5 songs in a playlist. Lets say I Will Not Bow, Let The Beat Build, So Sharp, Good Time, and Fall. But on my iPhone in the same playlist they are ordered Let The Beat Build, Good Time, I Will Not Bow, So Sharp, then Fall. Why would they be ordered differently between the two? Anyone else having this problem?

There is a solution for this problem. Right click your smartlist; select edit smartlist; UNCHECK "live updating"; Then sync your files. This will adjust your device (iPod, iPhone) list to the way it is in your iTunes list.
It does mess up adding new songs to your smartlist if you use a specific method of list names which adds a song automatically. If this is the case, check "live updating" using the method above, add your song, then uncheck it again to keep the order as it is in iTunes.
Hope this helps. It works for me everytime a list messes up. I read about this fix somewhere in these forums, tried it and it works like a charm!!

  • Smart playlist order different in iTunes and iPod nano

I recently switched to the fifth gen (5G) nano from the first gen (1G) nano, and noticed a strange thing.
I have a smart playlist called "20 most recently played podcasts" where all podcasts with play count >= 1, and the list is limited to 20 most recently played.
I sort it most recently-played last (=from old to recent) so that I could replay them in the same order I previously listened to.
I never had any problem with this setup with my old 1G nano, but the new 5G nano lists most recently played first, reversal of how I set it up in iTunes.
I have another smart playlist called "New podcasts" in which all podcasts with play cound = 0 are collected, sorted by release date, and it works fine (i.e. no play order mangling).
Has anybody seen this kind of problem? How do I correct it?
    My setup:
    WinXP Pro SP2
    iTunes ver 9.0.1.8
    iPod nano 5G ver 1.0.1
    Thanks in advance,

iTunes' system requirement says SP2 or later, so I think I'm OK. Besides I use this PC for work, too, and my company policy doesn't allow me to upgrade to SP3 (most post-SP2 individual security patches are applied).
Anyway, thanks for the pointer. I think I'll try disabling live update for the playlist.

  • Why is sorting "song" order different on iPod than in iTunes?

I have a podcast of the Economist and have created a smart playlist in order to allow the podcasts to show up in my playlists and to disappear from my iPod after listening to them and then syncing.
However, the ordering of the playlist on my iPod does not match the ordering in iTunes. Why is this? Also, when I look at the playlist in iTunes under the iPod in the Devices area it does not show any episodes in the playlist.
This seems like a bug, or am I doing something wrong?

Can someone point me to a forum somewhere where I can get help with this? I'm obviously posting to the wrong place. Thanks!

  • Playlist order sorts differently from music library and ipod

When I resort a playlist in iTunes and transfer it to my iPod I notice the songs take on a different order. Any one know how to get the desired playlist order to "stick" so it's preserved on the iPod?

If you manually manage music... on iTunes 11, go to the top left corner and there will be a pull down bar. Click "show menu bar". From there, go to view, then show sidebar. Magically, it looks like the previous versions of iTunes. Took me 3 hours of trial and error and searching through forums to figure out. Tried calling Apple to have them walk me through it and they said they wouldn't help me since I don't have Apple Care. Whatever. Hope this helps!!

  • IPod Shuffle 2nd Gen overrides my playlist order

Goal: copy 8 (or whatever number) podcasts onto my iPod Shuffle 2nd Gen (silver, 1 Gig), in a specific order.
What actually happens: everything looks good, but when I eject the iPod and listen to the tracks, or when I reconnect the iPod, the tracks have been rearranged into a different specific order (it seems to be "album order" - that is, when I click on the Album Order column, the sort doesn't change).
The iPod's shuffle button is not in shuffle mode, nor is the shuffle button in iTunes. I've completely Reset the iPod using the latest update of iPod reset utility. I've tried copying songs onto the pod one at a time, or a whole bunch at a time, or using Autofill. With each method, I am able to copy all of the tracks onto the iPod, and have them show up in the right order. Inevitably, when I listen to them, or reconnect the iPod, they're back in the same wrong order that the iPod seems to prefer.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Rob Strong

Ok, my update: I figured out how to name every podcast in the Sort Name field, as suggested. I was able to enter numbers in each field. Problem #1: I numbered them 1-49 (49 podcasts). But, the field sorts all the 1s, then all the 2s, etc. So, I had to renumber 1-19 as 1-10, then 101, 102, etc. That solved that problem. In future, I will try 01, 02, etc.
And so, in my podcast playlist, they were organized in the order I wanted them, sorted on the Sort Name column by my numbers. Good. Then I tranferred them to the iPod. I also have music on the iPod, so the podcasts all appeared at the end of my list - #72 and on. I like putting them at the top of the list, so I know where they are and can find them, I dragged the whole 49 up to the top of the list. Everything looked fine.
But, just as Robert reports and as I have experienced over and over again, when I went to listen to the iPod, THE ORDER WAS REJIGGED AGAIN, according to whatever order it is that the iPod likes! (But only the podcasts were re-ordered, within themselves; the music files still started after podcast #49.)
    Can anyone help?

  • I have an iPod 5thGen 30 GB. My tracks on my playlists are rarely in the correct order on the iPod, tho the order is correct when viewed on iTunes.

I have an iPod 5thGen 30 GB. My tracks on my playlists are rarely in the correct order on the iPod, tho the order is correct when viewed on iTunes. Is there anything I can do?

It goes by the Track # field, as seen in on a list in iTunes.  So, make sure the Track # field is correctly entered for each song when you review the album on a list in iTunes.  Also, make sure the Album field is entered identically for all the songs on the album.
You can edit those fields by doing a Get Info on a song, and going to the Info windows's Info tab,

  • Was the Smart Playlist podcast order bug on iPod nano fixed in iTunes 11

iTunes 9 broke the order in which Smart Playlists play podcasts in on the Nano.  See "Smart Playlist order not respected on ipod nano after upgrade to iTunes 9" (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2154509).  Has this been fixed in iTunes 11?

    Hi MNM1974,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you want to know how to manually manage the music and playlists on your iPod nano. The article below provides more information about automatic and manual syncing of content to your device, and it will walk you through the process.

  • Playlist order on iPod not same as iTunes

I have a 80-ish song playlist. I will occasionally go into the list in itunes and re-shuffle it. On subsequent sync's however, the ipod will revert to the old shuffled order which does not match the itunes order. I have tried copying the playlist and renaming it and deleting the old one. But it just did it again. I am stumped. How is it continuing to revert to the order on the ipod that is no longer on itunes? This is not a shuffle/random issue, but a playlist version issue. Thanks.

In iTunes select the playlist name and *Copy to play order* then sync.
Or you can just go set Settings -> Shuffle* to Songs on the iPod and play the playlist.

  • HT1535 I want to load a playlist onto an iPod Shuffle that plays in a specific order. (The ipod is not on the shuffle mode but it keeps changing the desried order. I'm going crazy!

I've created a playlist in iTunes for someone in a specific order. I've bought them an iPod shuffle and have downloaded the playlist onto the iPod. Unfortunately, the iPod shuffle then reorders the paylist and it also plays in another order. The shuffle function is switched off, so I don't elieve it is anything to do with that!
It's driving me crazy! Please help!!!

Which shuffle model do you have?  This document shows the four types
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1719
Assuming it is the current 4th gen shuffle (or 3rd gen), if you want to play songs from a playlist on the shuffle, in playlist order, you need to use VoiceOver to switch to that playlist.  By default, the shuffle plays songs from the All Songs list.  When you set the power switch to play-in-order, the All Songs list plays songs alphabetically.
This document explains how to set up and use VoiceOver on the shuffle.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4322
If that playlist is selected, and the power switch is set to play-in-order, the shuffle plays the songs in playlist order.

  • Keeping my itunes playlist order after I sync to iPod Nano 7th Gen

So I created a playlist but I am having trouble keeping the order of songs after I sync. I have tried rating them as well but as soon as I sync, Alphabetical order is what I get. Any thoughts?

In iTunes, go to your playlist.  On the playlist, click on its column header row at the far left end, above the column with sequential numbers below.  That sorts the playlist by playlist order, and you can change the song order by dragging songs around on the list.  You may have done this already.
If you sync this playlist to the iPod, it should appear in that order on the iPod.
If it does not, you may not be looking at the playlist on the iPod.  If you select the list of All Songs on the iPod, it will be in alphabetical order.  Even if you only have one playlist synced to the iPod, the All Songs list is not the playlist.  If you select the playlist on the iPod, it should be in playlist order.

  • Q or Enhancement: Different Playlist for different weekdays for iPod Alarm

Current:I can associate a Playlist for an Alarm Setting in IPOD classic.
Required: How to enable different playlists for different weekdays for an iPod Alarm?
    Appreciate responses.

I think you will have to create a different alarm for each day. Name the alarm by the day of the week and select the desired playlist for that day of the week.

  • Playlist ordering with 4G shuffle NOT possible

It's not possible to sync the order of songs with the 4. Generation of the iPod shuffle. THe shuffle is playing always ordered by Artist.
Changing the order in iTunes and re-sync the iPod doesn't affect the order on the iPod shuffle.
Is this a bug in the firmware of the 4G shuffle or a problem with iTunes?

You can sort all the music that is not in a playlist on your shuffle. It inherits whatever sort you have selected for your entire music library in itunes. To see what I am talking about, do this:
    1. Under Library (on the left side of iTunes) click "Music"
    2. You now see on the right your entire music library. At the top, click the top of the column you want to sort by. You can right click to add more columns
    3. Sort by something different than what you are currently sorting by.
    4. Connect your shuffle and wait for it to come up
    5. When your shuffle appears on the left, open it and click "Music" and note how it is sorted. The column it is currently sorted by will be darker in its heading and their will be a triangle in that columns heading
    6. Now click on the name of your shuffle and click sync.
    7. Go back to your "Music" entry on your shuffle and you will see it is now sorted by the column you changed your iTunes music library too.
So, your music on your shuffle will inherit the sort order you have set for your entire library on itunes, when you sync it.
    Does that make sense?

  • I have playlists on my original iPod but are not in the library.  How can I move them from the iPod to the library?

I have playlists on my original iPod but are not in the library.  How can I move them from the iPod to the library?

She can choose to either enable the setting on her iPod to Manually manage music and videos.  With setting enabled she can sync content to her iPod from multiple computers without it affecting whats already stored her iPod. For more information on syncing content to an iPod manually see this article.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1535
However, I would recommend copying whats on her iPod to her iTunes library first.  There are several ways to accomplish this.  See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer discussing the different ways to do it.
